If you can make it through the Temple of Trials without a melee or unarmed build and with your patience and sanity intact, you can do anything in this world that you set your mind to. Believe in yourself. Also, maybe don’t put the least interesting part of your game at the very beginning.

true old school pure peak of gaming awesome RPG game that made a example for years deserving it's own remaster (NOT REMAKE okay maybe exept making gui more clear) instead of fallout 3 which is crap compared to F2 it can be quite difficult to get through at frist, but when you will get used to turn based combat and gui (instructions button is under f1 xddd) everything will be fine also you should play fallout 1 frist, it's shorter, easier, more welcoming, but it's technically same game fallout 2 is huge, is full of content compared to many modern games and most WOKE oldschool game you will probabbly see haha still it is old and it is game from 1999, and it looks like one from this year

Good, but dated game. This game is older than me. I remained stuck at some points not knowing what to do on the oil rig. I highly recommend the Fallout 2 Restoration Project mod to patch bugs and restore cut / unfinished content.

Often times a lot of fun, and you can see why some people think it's one of the best RPGs ever. But also often enough the game's age rears its head with annoying random encounters and health bloat. Still worth a playthrough, if only because the world is really well built. The humour is love-or-hate; if you thought Borderlands 2 was subtle in its use of pop culture, then you'll love this.

I spent the entire game creating the perfect melee build just to gun Frank Horrigan down with turrets

Game is amazing if you can get over the fact the game doesn't hold you're hand like a child so it really fun to just figure things out and actually have some exploration and once you get the highwayman its much more friendly but you will have to get the Enclave armor to even stand a chance of some harder fights Good game people should play these types of games once in a while.

The game is a legitimate buggy mess, if you don't have the time nor energy to deal with bugs by going into the files to fix them or installing an unofficial patch then I don't blame you for not wanting to get the game. So far I'd say I like fallout 1 more just from dealing with all the bugs alone. We shall see If my opinion changes if I'm able to finish the game

This game is so old and highly acclaimed that it seems as if there's little point in adding another positive review to the heap. Like many of you out there, I believe I picked this up for a couple dollars way back as a bundle with Fallout and Fallout Tactics. Since then, it has sat in my library until I just recently decided to play it. Damn this game is good! Of those early titles from Black Isle Studios, Fallout 2 is definitely the best. But Steam was not the first time I met with this titan of role playing games. I remember going to the media section of Target when I was a kid and picking up the case for this game (also bundled with Fallout and Tactics) off the shelf. Maybe I was playing the just released Fallout 3 or maybe I was simply drawn to the bug eyes of the Enclave soldier on the front, but I bought it and quickly stuck the CD ROM in the family computer running Windows XP. The rest is, forgive the cliché, history. Holy smokes did I get sucked into this game. Funny, considering I wasn't even really that good at it. I was scouring GameFAQs for all the hints and advice I could get. But eventually, after creating a 10 Agility character and getting more comfortable with combat, I could just wander on my own and appreciate the immersive world of post-apocalyptic California. I'm looking forward to accessing some of that childlike wonder whenever I don't have to worry about adult things. If, for whatever reason, you have not given this game a go yet, you should try it. It will be worth your time. Now, the game ships with SFall, a big engine tweak, as well as the High Res patch, which it makes it look much better than it did on, say, an old Windows XP machine. If you haven't heard of it, I also recommend trying out the Fallout 2 Restoration Project, particularly with the talking heads mod/addon. There's a lot of life in this game yet.

It's a Fallout game, made after the first Fallout game. Since all mankind has to play all the Fallout games to achieve nirvana, you gotta do it.

This is a great old RPG in the classic sense. It allows for role-playing and a wide range of play styles. Despite a troubled and rushed development cycle, and despite its flaws, it manages to improve upon some things and offer a somewhat different gameplay experience than the first game. It is impressive how far you can get by focusing on non-combat skills, especially with the successful use of the speech skill. The lockpick skill is also extremely useful. Some NPCs can perform skill checks for you if their skill level is higher, such as repair or science. The game is very well designed, though it is definitely a bit janky in some ways. Some areas feel more rushed than others, but the game itself does have more content than Fallout 1, but with a much lower proportion of talking heads and audio for important characters.

Anyone that's been itching for a New Vegas-styled adventure, this is it. The first game is great with its consistent thematic writing and tone with a dash of black humor. It is fun yet frustrating at times until you're high level. Fallout 2 expands all of that. Although with its constant pop culture references and zany humor, it may be a turn off for serious players but for all fans alike, this may be your cup of tea. 40 hours in and it has been very addictive and I highly recommend it for anyone curious enough to try it. Lastly I have been playing it through Killapp's Restoration mod, it restores most of the cut content back into the game, but it was frustratingly difficult starting out.

After almost 40 hours I finished the game and I found fallout 1 to be a demo compared to fallout 2. In fallout 1 there weren't many quests beyond the simple "bring it to me, kill this guy, talk to him" but in fallout 2 everything changes. Quests like the one with the intelligent radscorpion, the one with the "haunted" farm in Modoc or even the one where you stop the officer from blowing up the power plant show that creativity matters and the side quests are even more important than the main ones in terms of creating the world in the game. I like the sense of humor and I think it's another thing that creates the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, the dark humor fits the wasteland perfectly. The main quest is just as simple and unambitious as the main quest in fallout 1 but in its essence it's not as stupid as the master and mutants plan. Fallout 2 has an even better post-apocalyptic feel than the first part, thanks to more locations and a more philosophical dilemma about their inhabitants, the quests are simply better developed and much more interesting. Also the music is a masterpiece, but it is not entirely a feature of fallout 2, because there are many songs that were in fallout 1 and were reused in fallout 2. I am 200% sure that I will play this game again and do it 10 hours a day with the same passion

Played it with restoration mod, so I had bugs fixed and saw additional content, not a review purely of a game, though I do reccomend install it, since it fixes a lot of things. Gmaplay hasnt changed since the last one, that being outdated by modern standards and tbh I doubt it it was that good even back then. Game became much bigger, more places to visit, more quests, longer story. Its a great game, but worse than the first one, This time its not a story of a recovering world, pepole got accustomed to new circumstances, which is fine. Issues are the following: there are a lot more references to pop culture outside of random encounters and game doesnt take itself as seriously overall which breaks the immersion. Regarding choices - decided to play as a bad guy this time, but was disappointed, as game doesnt give you a lot of choices other than being evil for the sake of evil, I just personally expected it to be more nuanced. If you plan to play as one do know that its pretty much a difficulty modifier as rewards arent better if not outright hurting you such as not allowing you to visit cities or your companion list being limited to 1 extra person who isnt that good anyway, but who you also may miss. Main villian this time is also more boring than Master from the first game, Dornan and absolute unit Hank are charismatic, but Enclave has nothing to it other than being genocidal scum for no real reason. Game being bigger has a drawback of you going out on a quest and then very much forgetting about it for a good while, minding your own business and returning to it in final third of the game or so. My review was critical cos of how much love I have for the first game and second not living up to expectations, but its still a good game and if youre fan of rpgs you should absolutely go check it out yourself.

Steam denied my refund because i went 3 hour.... left the game on while i was patching. Also restarted and retried on different setting and the game still bugs and crashes..... Moral of the story, dont try to make it work, return it right away. self sufficiency is the enemy. Dont buy retro games on steam go to GoG
A Classic Worth the Commitment
This is a fantastic game, but it’s important to note that it was released in 1996. Like most titles from that era, it requires a thorough reading of the user manual—thankfully included in the Steam version. Jumping in blind will make the game incredibly difficult, and the lack of an in-game tutorial may lead some players to uninstall it prematurely. That would be unfortunate, as this is one of the best entries in the franchise, second only to Fallout 2, in my opinion. True to the Fallout legacy, the story is phenomenal, featuring a rich cast of well-developed characters, numerous side quests, and gripping sci-fi elements that make the experience truly memorable. However, it’s worth noting that the gameplay is very challenging by modern standards. This isn’t a game where you simply pick up a gun and start shooting everything in sight. Combat is turn-based, resembling V.A.T.S. in the newer titles, and lacks any first-person shooter mechanics. Players coming from Fallout: New Vegas or later entries might struggle with this shift in gameplay style. At first, adjusting to what now feels like quirks—though they were solid systems at the time—was a major hurdle. But after consulting the manual or watching a quick guide on YouTube, the game revealed itself to be a rewarding and unique experience, even by today’s standards.
Gameplay Challenges
One of the biggest hurdles for newcomers is exploration. If you don’t enjoy scouring every corner of the post-apocalyptic world, you’ll likely struggle. Essential items for progression, such as the rope early on, aren’t handed to you—you must seek them out. Without prior knowledge or thorough exploration, crucial items can be frustratingly hard to find. In fact, on my second playthrough, I was surprised by the sheer number of things I had missed the first time around. Another challenge is the slow start. The beginning of the game is by far the most tedious part, but pushing through is worth it. I had to pick it up three or four times, playing for a couple of hours and stepping away for months before I finally got past the intro. At first, the gameplay felt antiquated and even dull, but ironically, what seemed outdated soon became one of my favorite aspects. The emphasis leans more on storytelling than action, setting it apart from modern entries that balance combat and narrative more evenly. If you’re expecting a one-to-one match with newer Fallout titles, you may be disappointed. Combat is very different—whether for better or worse—requiring strategy and careful planning. The ability to reflect on the story and conduct outside research will significantly improve the experience. A Game Meant to Be Played More Than Once This is not a one-and-done game. There are multiple endings, and a single playthrough won’t reveal all of them. Players will inevitably miss missions, items, and even entire locations if they aren’t paying close attention to dialogue options. The game doesn’t hold your hand. Unlike newer entries with limited ending variations, every action (or inaction) impacts the outcome.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this game is highly recommended, but it comes with a steep learning curve. Stick with it, and you’ll uncover one of the most rewarding experiences in the franchise.

Fallout 2 is definitely one of my favourite fallout games in terms of lore, narrative and the world. I especially love the evolution of the NCR. The game has a big learning curve for players used to modern games, but if you are desperate for fallout content or want to try an old game, this is peak. I already know everything about fallout 2, since I watched Oxhorn play it, so I won't be playing it a lot.
