Truly lives up to the title of one of the best RPGs ever made, especially for the time it came out.
As with all other masterpiece games, I won't bother going deep into the analysis of the game elements. Everything is just mothafuking great. But there's one major issue. It's extremely dated in terms of gameplay, utility, and basic, taken-for-granted features nowadays, and it shows. Еven with all the patches, today an out-of-the-box copy still has many bugs, baseless gameplay-forced annoyances/complications, time wasters, missing features, and it's more prone to crashing. A lot of things you expect to happen simply don't happen, or are not the case. Here’s just a taste of some of the missing QoL and features (without bugs and time wasters): [olist] [*]NPCs, mainly party members, often decide to start standing in a doorway, blocking the passage. In the vanilla version, this will stop you from going through a door, which might essentially soft-lock you. [*]Party members don't level and can't really be controlled in any meaningful way. [*]Doors must be clicked to open or close them. [*]No merchant restocking. [*]No ability to highlight items. [*]Items like consumables must be re-equipped after use. [*]No 'take all' option for the stash and loot windows. [*]You can't trade with companions - you can only steal from them. [*]No bulk trade for NPCs that trade unique items. [*]No scroll wheel support for scrolling the inventory. [*]On alt+tab, it crashes often. [*]No karma change notifications. [*]No full description of items when bartering. [*]Party limit is set to a single companion. [/olist] This is not a full list by any means. Thankfully, Fallout EU TU(Fallout 2 in 1) provides a ton of QoL, bugfixes, improvements, and new features, and solves all these issues and more. It makes the game as accessible and modern-gaming-friendly as possible while keeping the vanilla gameplay loop essentially the same. There is a great video that goes into detail well on how to install and tweak it in the best manner possible. It's a bit outdated - some mentioned tweaks have been moved or became default - but it’s still, IMO, the best entry point to Fallout 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCT2SG4ohgI If you choose not to use it, just so you know - you're condemning yourself to suffering from a plethora of issues, bugs, and wasting an insane amount of time. Last thing that must be mentioned - the game doesn't hold your hand at all. There is no path to follow, no recommended quests, or anything remotely like that. In no way does the game mention or even hint that something happens to certain settlements after a sizeable amount of time - which has extreme importance. Hell, there's not even a basic tutorial to explain the core mechanics. They don’t even tell you there’s a button that shows all the game hotkeys. Is that possibly just another dated part of this game, or is it the hardcore element of older PC games? Nobody will ever know. If you want to experience a definitive RPG that is in a class of its own and set an industry standard - this is a no-brainer to me. Like this guide and I’ll consider posting ET TU configuration file changes as a guide based on the video, but up to date.

Thought I wasn't going to be able to get into it because it's quite outdated, however pleasantly surprised this game is a 10/10 even 25+ years later. Install the Fallout Fixd mod and you're good to go.

Really fun if you can get past the age of the game. I recommend searching up good character builds and not being afraid to google what you need to do at times, since the game can be very vague. The story/quests/worldbuilding are fantastic, it's cool to see how much of the foundation of such a popular series was laid here

As much as I loved this game back in the day, it just doesn't play properly nowadays. Just about every time I unequip an item from a hand slot it gets deleted from my inventory.

After 20+ years the game still runs perfectly even on vanilla. Yeah this game it's kinda outdated and new players might find this game boring or unforgiving and hard but I think you must try this game anyway. What about differences, I was surprised that you could finish some quests by different ways and if you choose goofy lines in dialogues the characters won't talk with you again. In Bethesda games characters was too forgiving when players used to say some bullshi and could go away with that, you even could troll Caesar and he'll bear it. Super mutants horrifying, they have an order, they could think, fight and willingly serving to Master. Brotherhood hasn't changed at all, I was told opposite that they more isolated and focusing on their own technologies, but I'm not sure, they're just same as the BS from FNV. Outcasts from 3rd part was more conservative and contemptuous of strangers, gotta play Fallout 2 to make final verdict. Oh I won't lie I've save scummed a lot, the game simply ain't showing up what dialogue option requires speech check and these rats at beginning was too hard. You're a hero... and you have to leave

The OG Classic Fallout. I enjoyed it SO much. The music and atmosphere are unsettling, as they SHOULD be in FALLOUT. The graphics are dated, so you have to expect that. It doesn't hold your hand either like new games do. As much as I enjoyed it, not gonna lie I looked up a guide half way through. Still, the atmosphere, music, some of the characters and the lore is fantastic. It really makes you feel its a high stakes wasteland, its not jusy cozy like the newer games and 76. I'm very glad I played it.

Started with New Vegas... I was Amazed Got Dissapointed with Fallout 4... Fallout 3 was OK... just Ok... Started Fallout 1 a few days ago, after 26 years (I played a demo in 1999) and got my brain on fire. What a game...

Man the writing and voice acting in the old master piece are golden, kinda glitchy at this point cause so old but can muscle through.

This is maybe my 4th time trying to play this game, as the first 3 times I could not get used to the gameplay mechanics. This time I thought to just suck it up and embrace the game for what it is. And I'm glad i did :) It is a great introduction to the world of Fallout, and for those that played any of the 3D Fallout games as their first, I cannot recommend this game enough for you to try.

Got this game because I loved all of the Fallout games for as long as I can remember. It took me a day or two to kind of figure out wtf was going on and how to play it, but I've had a ton of fun learning and playing once I got it figured out. 20/10 would recommend to anyone who is into older RPG style games. There's a ton to do, and a lot of exploring for someone who enjoys finding every nook and cranny of a game.

The game holds up pretty well, even after all these years. Some quests can be quite unclear on your objectives, companions will often end up doing more damage to you and each other than the enemy in enclosed spaces, and harder fights may require a lot of attempts (fortunately you can save and load during fights); but underneath all that is a very solid game, even today.

A gritty, isometric dive into a post-nuclear wasteland, where choices mattered, death came quick, and charm oozed from every pixel. It was brutal, witty, and unapologetically old-school. Limited by tech, but limitless in spirit, it set the gold standard for RPG freedom. No hand-holding—just you, a Vault suit, and the wasteland. Shout out to Wasteland (1988) !

This is an excellent game with a compelling story that requires the player to make difficult choices and won't hold your hand like many modern games, esp within the Fallout series.

I love this game. The soundtrack is probably what I appreciate the most, and to me has the best fallout antagonist of the series.

Played on Linux (Xubuntu 24.04) I wanted to get into the fallout series and decided I should start with the first one and work my way up. I'm more into shooters and real-time action so I figured I would just have to endure the earlier games but I was pleasantly surprised. Fallout was quite enjoyable and the best turn based game I've played to date. There's plenty to explore, lots of quests and years of backstory to discover. You have the opportunity to develop your character to match your play style whatever that may be. You'll encounter people, mutants and all sorts of strange critters wherever you go. You make friends and enemies based on your choices. Many of the quests can be completed more than one way including the ending. You can talk or shoot your way out of most situations. The game starts you off with a deadline and no real direction so unless you want to read guides you'll have to resort to some amount of trial and error. Once the first objective is complete you have all sorts of time to finish the game. Fallout is a great addition to the post-apocalypse genre or games.

If you loved Fallout 2, you owe it to yourself to try Fallout 1. These two games go hand in hand and actually feel like true sequels back when follow ups stayed true to the originals. Fallout 1 set the tone and world perfectly, and Fallout 2 built on it without losing what made it great.

What a beautiful, horrific masterpiece, set in one of THE best genres/aesthetics and the beginning for one of THE best franchises ever made. Even with its age, to this day Fallout delivers the most realistic (and most punishing) post-apocalyptic experience. Its retrofuturistic style of the Wasteland and uncanny design of the folk that you come across in your journey, compacted in the 90s-era graphics, is such a unique experience that none of the "modern" Fallout games can come close to (not calling them bad by any means, though it's just not comparable lol). -If you've played the "newer" Fallout games before (as I myself have started my Fallout journey with FO76 on my PS4), fell in love the franchise, and haven't played FO/FO2 I heavily advise you to do so, as there is no such game like Fallout (and FO2).

Fallout is nuclear blast of a game to play through! It is a world filled with interesting lore to unearth, unique locations to find and characters to meet. You'll find yourself searching every corner and methodically dissecting every ruin, as you run and gun your way through every hive of villainy. An endless quest for more loot and knowledge. Interacting with every NPC and soaking up every detail as you look for anything that can help you on your quest. The setting and character designs are incredibly unique. Fallout's 60's take on the apocalypse does a phenomenal job at setting itself apart from other RPGs/post apocalyptic universes. From the character designs to the lore, this universe is incredibly rich and distinct. That being said there are some issues: The start of the game is very restrictive, making you feel shackled. At the same time the game does not explain any of its controls leaving you to bang your head against your keyboard, desperately trying to figure out how to do anything! The game design is a bit outdated and glitches are plentiful so many sections will have you stuck or very confused. Combat, while fun, gets exponentially slower the more enemies are involved, as the game forces you to sit through EACH and EVERY ONE of their animations, with no option to skip through them. Worst of all, there is a second secret time limit on top of the first that leads to many locations in the game being destroyed. Forcing you to chose between getting a better ending and actually appreciating the details the world has to offer. The final boss is also a tad underwhelming. Yet despite all of this, the game is still incredibly fun. With early-mid to late game being the peak of the whole experience, the initial slump of okay-ness really only lasts till around vault 15. Overall, if you've got about 15 to 20 hours to kill, then this would be a great way to do it. 8/10 Fuck Junktown though. That place sucks.

Despite being the first of 5 cannon fallout games, no other game has managed to capture a post Apocalyptic feeling in such an amazing way. It's no wonder why people still compare the new titles to this, it really is a masterpiece. RIP Interplay.

8/10 This was my second time trying to get into this game and it finally clicked, I immediately got sucked into this world, Fallout 3 was my first Fallout game yet New Vegas is my favorite game out of the entire franchise with Fallout 1 following it. Only problem is that even with fixes and such the game would randomly run into issues that personally annoyed me, things like the game taking several tries just to open it finally along with some crashes at rather bad times. Overall the game is fun as fuck and I can't wait to see what's changed and improved upon in Fallout 2. ~ THE SCALE ~ 0 - The devs belong on a watchlist. 1 - Pay me for playing this ♥♥♥♥! 2 - Uninstall immediately 3 - Is this even worth playing? 4 - Not memorable at all. 5 - Not good, not bad, it just exists. 6 - Some interesting elements. 7 - Pretty solid bones, could be better. 8 - Pretty fun game, might replay in the future. 9 - Worth several replays, it's that damn good. 10 - Endless replay value, it's one of a kind.

The game is challenging in its own way but highly enjoyable to explore and complete quests. It feels good to actually complete quests unlike the newer fallout games, which i still love anyways. I find it interesting how much more this game makes you think about your choices especially during character creation as you cannot change your stats after the fact. So far loving the game and look forward to continue playing

This game is probably the best Fallout game in terms of Lore. The story was very good, it had a very interesting structure. Although I am used to FPS games, the new dialogues that developed in the game about S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats were frankly very entertaining for me and made me enjoy playing an rts-rpg game. I would add it again. The story is very good. Everyone who loves Fallout should play it.

I played Fallout when it came out in 1997; it was one of my very first PC games and it definitely left an indelible mark. I was about 10, way too young to play this kind of games, and I'm not sure I understood much of what was going on. But I remember I was obsessed with it and somehow I went all the way to the final boss (which I couldn't beat)! Years later, it became the reason I got on Steam, so I could play it again! And now I've been a huge fan of the whole series. If you liked some of the other Fallout games but never played the original one, I say go for it, it's a masterpiece!!
