The "Turbo Kid" movie from 2015 is one of my all time favorite movies and you might imagine my surprise when I found out that there is a Turbo Kid game. When I saw it mentioned in a Steam Deck thread on Lemmy, at first I thought someone was pulling my leg. Why had I not heard about this? I love metroidvania-style games, have played through Hollow Knight, both Ori's, Animal Well... why was this never suggested to me on Steam? Seeing the great review score and that it runs well on the Steam Deck made me pick it up immediately. Usually I wait for games to go on sale but this one I had to play right now. I picked it up and have been playing it over the last couple of weeks during my daily commute on the Steam Deck OLED. TL;DR: This is one of the best metroidvania-style games I have ever played. Gameplay: For those unfamiliar with Metroidvanias/Search Action games a quick introduction: The player usually starts out with basic equipment/weaponry/abilities in a vast game world and over time unlocks more of those abilities or weapons to take on harder challenges or reach previously unreachable parts of the map. Turbo Kid is no different in that regard - it uses that same progress style of similar games in that genre. You quickly start to get upgrades, a bike, and other modes of traversal like portals, which makes you progress even further. This is all done incredibly fluidly and with an immense amount of charme. Every unlock feels meaningful, every quest completed leads to a new adventure. Graphics: The game heavily relies on pixel art which fits the overall tone and style of the game perfectly. The enemies look menacing, the game world huge and lovely designed. It ran rock solid on the Steam Deck at 60 FPS throughout my playthrough. Sound & Music: The Chiptune music is nothing short of perfect. When you sit down on a couch to save your current progress and Turbo Kid pulls out a Game Boy and the music starts playing is the cherry on top. Every area has a specific tune and you can even find hidden tapes that can be played with an integrated cassette tape player. The details in this game are amazing... There is no voice acting but it is also not needed. The text-conversations on screen are usually quick & fun and don't warrant any voice recordings. Verdict: This game ticks all the right boxes:

It is set in a movie game world that I absolutely adore
There are so many references to the media I consumed as a teenager in the 90s - a fantastic trip down memory lane
The gameplay is superb
The music and sounds are spot on
The playtime of around 15-20 hours is great
Even the standard price is fantastic when you don't want to wait for a sale
It is hard to not keep gushing about how much I love this game. The only thing that I didn't really like was the Walljump-mechanic because I struggled with getting the timing right. That aside this game is - for me at least - virtually flawless. Thank you for creating a masterpiece! :) Hardware: Steam Deck OLED Peace. Love. Linux
