As far as Doom Clones of the era go: It's not the best, but it's far, far from the worst. Sure, there's not much enemy variety (even for the standards of the time) and some of the missions are bullshit hard but it's still damn fun where it counts. This is pure Classic Doom Boomer Shooter action with a Star Wars skin draped on top, which makes it automatically better.
My biggest problem tho is that enemy variety, fun as it is to blast Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers, it gets kinda repetitive as they're very basic an easy to defeat; same with what few bosses there are, Boba Fett was hilariously and anti-climatically easy to beat (tho tbf, it's in-character for him considering how he was defeated in Return of The Jedi) and General Mohc was like a Dark Trooper but lame.
Speaking of the Dark Troopers, they are my favorite enemies to fight in the game, and I like their progression as bosses of some missions into normal enemies you encounter in the map in the final mission (even if that part where you get 4 of them thrown at you in a ridiculously tight L-Shaped corridor is complete crap) and they are just a cool concept in general.
The story itself is... certainly there. Tho tbf, you really don't need a tight story for these kinds of games, just a loose context excuse to blast enemies from level to level and the story here does the job, Kyle himself isn't characterized beyond "Former Imperial Officer Han Solo type" (which I guess Star Wars games were obsessed with around this time, cause Dash Rendar was introduced not one year later in Shadows of The Empire) and that's about it. Again, not really important but just worth pointing out.
Some of the missions are very poorly designed and frustrating, the worst ones for me where the one in the cliffs where there's a few annoying parts where you have to run around very tight ledges. The one in the ice planet where you slip around everywhere and you don't get the Cleats that fix the issue until the very end as some kind of cruel joke. The Nar Shadaa mission is just crawling with those annoying enemies that throw Thermal Detonators and the Bossk clones with their stun rifles. The Jabba's ship one where you're forced to fight a bunch of enemies without any of the gear you've gathered so far. And the final mission's idea of difficulty being throwing a bunch of Dark Trooopers and enemies on you at the same time.
It is, however, really fun to hear some classic Star Wars tunes remixed in MIDI. Sure it can get a bit grating during long play sessions, but I don't care cause it's Star Wars music, so it's cool either way.
Despite my complaining, I still think it's a solid game and easily one of the best Star Wars games ever, not only because it's still a solid boomer shooter at its core, but also because it set the stage up for the Jedi Knight games, which are where the real meat and potatoes are.
