Monster Hunter Stories takes the iconic Monster Hunter formula and flips it on its head, trading the signature real-time hunting for turn-based RPG combat and a heartfelt narrative about friendship and discovery. It’s a delightful spin-off that opens the door for new audiences while still offering familiar nods to series veterans. If you’ve ever wanted to bond with your monsters instead of just hunting them, this game lets you ride, raise, and battle alongside your very own “Monsties” in a vibrant, story-driven adventure. At its core, Monster Hunter Stories is a traditional JRPG with a strategic twist. Battles operate on a rock-paper-scissors system between Power, Speed, and Technical attack types, requiring tactical choices rather than button mashing. Your primary companions are the Monsties—monsters you hatch from eggs, raise, and evolve. Each species has unique abilities, elemental affinities, and styles, encouraging you to mix and match your team for maximum synergy. The bond you build with these creatures is front and center, emphasized by the story and your ability to ride them in exploration and combat. The world is a colorful and inviting one, full of quests, dungeons, and secrets, providing a breezy but satisfying adventure that’s lighter on grinding compared to the mainline Monster Hunter series. The narrative is charming and approachable, focusing on the young Rider’s journey to uncover their destiny and save their village. While the story isn’t particularly deep or complex, its themes of friendship, trust, and growth shine through in well-written moments and engaging characters. The game balances lighthearted humor with a sense of epic adventure, making it accessible for both younger players and longtime fans. The cel-shaded art style is bright, expressive, and perfectly suited to the tone of the game. Character designs are charming and distinct, while monsters look adorable yet imposing. The soundtrack complements the whimsical atmosphere, with memorable tunes that range from energetic battle themes to serene exploration melodies. Pros: -Unique turn-based combat with strategic depth -Wide variety of Monsties to collect and customize -Engaging, family-friendly story -Beautiful, colorful art style -Accessible to newcomers and series fans alike Cons: -Some repetitive fetch quests -Combat system, while strategic, can feel simple over time -Limited multiplayer features compared to mainline MH games -Story pacing slows down in mid-game Monster Hunter Stories is a refreshing and heartfelt departure from the usual Monster Hunter grind. Its focus on monster companionship, turn-based battles, and narrative adventure offers a charming experience that stands well on its own. Whether you’re a Monster Hunter fan looking for a new way to experience the world or a JRPG lover wanting a fun, monster-filled quest, this game is an excellent choice. Recommended for fans of JRPGs, monster-collecting games, and anyone craving a lighter, story-rich Monster Hunter experience. Rating: 9/10

Oh god yes, this game is probably one of the best games I've played and I have no words to express the sheer Joy I experienced getting all of its achievements. I highly recommend playing it, especially if you are interested in Monster Hunter Stories 2

i love the vibe. i love the world. i love the characters. i love how it gets pre-World monster hunter charm. but oh my god the combat and raising are a headache. rock paper scissor where the game screams at you that monsters have patterns but also not really. acquiring eggs and raising monsters to feed genes to other monsters except gene slots, gene types and gene locations are random. i engaged with the game's systems, i truly did but wow. everything is messy. i powered through because the game gives you a rathalos with 9 open gene slots so i could transform him into a small nuke but other than that this game was nothing short of frustrating. i am still leaving it as positive because i don't have it in me to leave it as a negative but oh my god this game was frustrating.

While some remastered features are nice, I would rather much recommend to play the original game this is a remaster of. The process of porting to PC from 3DS was not kind to it.

Can't wait to reach the unfair endgame. Good port of an amazing game, honestly prefer the hunting horn and battle pouch of this game over the sequel. Now im prepearing to fight Pink Rathian early and im definetly gonna get dumpstered like in my first run.

Having finished both this and the 2nd game i can say both are worth a playthrough and are great games to play on the side if you have the time. The grindyness is worse than the 2nd game but i guess thats to be expected and like the 2nd getting specific monsties can be a pain tho more so here cause Monsties share egg patterns so can be a bit confusing. if it had the "Quick Finish" from MHS2 it would have been awesome but it is what it is. Buy on a sale and play as a side game!

Pros: - Tried to play the Android version a few years back but could not get past the janky controls and nonsensical “monster hunter language” voice overs. Really glad they decided to re-master this for PC with updated graphics and full Japanese voice-over. - Story is generally good albeit a bit basic. - Great characters. I played the games out of order so it was nice to see the backstory of the characters from Monster Hunter Stories 2. - Turn-based gameplay is fun and can get quite challenging at times where you have to figure out a monster’s move set and properly counter it. Quick time events (QTE) interspersed into the combat generally added to the gameplay and wasn’t the usual annoying and pointless QTE plaguing some other JRPGs. - Hunting monster eggs, hatching them and then doing gene matching to create your ideal “Monstie” was addicting. Cons: - Unnecessary name changes to some characters because localizers cannot help themselves. - Making gear out of monster part, a staple of the monster hunter series, has been basically neutered. You no longer need specific monster parts to craft gear, monster parts are basically converted to points and you only need to meet the minimum points to craft the gear set. You are also forced to only wear gear sets, you can no longer mix-and -match gear crafted from different monsters to get your ideal set of buffs to suit your gameplay style. - Worst yet, for some reason, they only decided to include THREE weapon types in the game, sworn & shield, great sword and hunting horn. My go-to weapon, the blowgun, was missing which was a huge bummer. - The “Tournament” mode where you have to fight 5 battles back-to-back was annoying. They basically give you 4 easy fights and only the last fight is hard. If you lose the last fight, you cannot just replay it, you have to waste you time on the first 4 pointless fights again. - End game in just pointlessly grinding the same uninspired dungeon which is basically a repeat of the same floor for ~100 levels. Overall, 7/10. Though the graphics is a bit dated, the gameplay and story were fun enough to keep me engaged until the end. Wish Capcom would release the other Monster Hunter games on PC as well, especially Monster Hunter Tri and Monster Hunter 4.
