EDIT2: Gameplay loop remains the same, but feels more balanced now, finished this playthrough clocking at 6 hours, definitely more enjoyable. The team seems to be improving bit by bit, so if the visuals entice you, give it a go. The music is also very good :)
Hoping they expand on this world they built... you can't leave us hanging!
EDIT: Midway through my 4th playthrough after the 1.02 update, will update my impressions soon.
Do you like cuteness and can withstand pain, a lot of pain and frustration? If not, steer clear of this game.
There are no customizable video settings (outside of a simple "Quality" toggle, no windowed/borderless mode) and no control remaps. Definitely not KB/M friendly.
The game is split between "Free roam" (exploring, collecting mushrooms, diary entries, saving spirits while dodging an undefeatable enemy) and "Missions" featuring combat (pure combat or ESCORT mission\protect NPC types).
The game is SLOW. Along with some of the gameplay decisions, it's aggravating:
- Progress is locked by invisible walls and Mission health requirements.
- You have to flee an enemy in free-roam? Kuuta will stop and look back instead of keep running away to safety. The dodge mechanic is just you and your oversized bag tripping forward.
- Trying to save spirits and they flee underwater, your character can't swim...
- "GIT GUD!" No lock-on during combat, so some of your attacks will just miss the enemies. There are flying, teleporting and decoy type enemies waiting to spoil your day.
- Have to refill your health? You have to stay still for a moment
- Getting stun-locked by multiple enemies hitting you at once, interrupting your combos and charged attacks
- Damage output remains pretty much the same throughout the majority of the game, you will feel you can't dispatch enemies soon enough
- Escort missions will have you running from one side of the map to the other in order to defeat enemies, while new enemies spawn in. You are not exactly fast, this can get frustratingly difficult when the game throws every enemy type and the kitchen sink at you.
I didn't experience noticeable performance issues, but the game will misbehave from time to time, from enemies freezing and becoming unkillable, the camera becoming unresponsive to a progress soft lock because I tackled Missions out of order.
Played, tried to mod it, saw it to the end. Overall, the presentation, character design and story (which are incredibly charming!) does not outweigh those negatives. And it pains me, because with some tweaks, this could be an enjoyable, albeit short game.
