An honest review after 50 hours
Imagine you're thrown right into Kevin Costner's "Water World" where your ship is your life. That's Age of Water. A mobile weapons platform you build from ships scavenged throughout your game life. (And maybe a bit of channeling your inner pirate lol) Now imagine that each bit of progression makes you feel stronger, your time is not wasted, your efforts are bearing fruit... and this is where things get a bit choppy (Nautical pun, I couldn't resist)
The Good:
Progression is NOT locked behind a PvP wall. There is so much PvE content that it will literally delete hours from your clock you will not notice. (Frustrated, YES! But we'll get there) Crafting, Looting, Questing, some kid friendly "Eye candy" and hilarious dialog that will just make you shake your head. Yes, it's AI generated and it's okay, not great, but okay. Some mispronounced words or completely wrong words lol (See, hilarious!)
The Bad:
Progression...
"But wait, you listed that as a Good Thing...What's up?"
Glad you asked! See, there is not much of a tutorial in Age of Water, and what IS explained is done so very quickly and basically with absolutely NO hand holding after your first few missions. Now the real kicker... Be ready to remake your character just as you think you've finally got things figured out because you will make a mistake (Hopefully not as bad as what I've just experienced) and have to restart your character at least once, me personally..this will be my 3rd restart.
"Dude!? Why!? Finish one!"
That's the Bad.. I can't.. The leveling system is also linked to your tech research (I told you, there is crafting so YES you will have to research tech) The Main Story and Tech Quests are very loosely linked. I say this as a negative because I do not believe that ANY game should allow a new player to completely lock themselves out of their tech tree due to playing content. Especially content with NO WARNING!
Overall I will give this game a positive review because I truly do enjoy it and am having a great time. Even taking part in PVP battles that I normally would avoid in a competitive environment. In AoW; it's actually Fun! What's not fun is being punished for doing a quest chain.
(I'm literally locked at tier 2 of 4 because of it and thus, restarting)
There simply isn't enough information about the game mechanics and the most recent "Beginner" friendly stuff you're going to find is a few months old.
If you're up for that risk. If you don't mind making a mistake and having to potentially lose everything you farmed as well as ships you've collected then Absolutely give this a full broadside for fun!
If you're not up for the risk of making a mistake that forces you to restart a character with "Future knowledge" (If I could go back knowing what I know now kinda thing) Then you might want to avoid this one.
Art Style/Visuals/Optimization 10/10 (This game runs on Ultra on a Ryzen 3 and a nVidia GT 1030 with 0 lag or Frame drops)
PvE Content - 8/10 (You're not giving any type of difficulty notice or slider. You'll learn that lesson Quickly!)
PvP Content - 6/10 (There are only 2 PvP events currently, but it's fun, even for a "Newb")
Overall - 8/10
Could the systems in-game use a bit more, I'll call it New Player appeal, Yes! I'm not asking for you to hold my hand but at the very least a "Level Recommended" and warnings on potentially character breaking (Not Game Breaking, you can still play you just can't progress) missions would be very VERY nice to have.
