Outward is not your typical open-world RPG. It doesn't hold your hand. There is no glowing breadcrumb trail, no quest marker screaming “Go here,” and no forgiving autosave system to cradle you after every misstep. And that’s exactly why it’s brilliant.
🎮 The Controls — Janky but Manageable
Let’s get one thing out of the way: the controls are undeniably a little clunky. Movement can feel sluggish. Menus are not as intuitive as we’ve come to expect from modern RPGs. Combat—especially early on—feels slow and deliberate to the point of frustration. You'll be tempted to blame the game for your failures.
But slowly, painfully, you realize: this is by design.
Outward isn’t a power fantasy. It's a survival fantasy. The learning curve is brutal. Every mechanic—be it cooking, potion-brewing, spellcasting, backpack management, or even just sleeping—has layers. Nothing is easy. And nothing is free.
🧭 The World — Immersive and Alive
The world of Aurai is stunning in its own rugged way. From the dusty deserts of Abrassar to the windswept cliffs of Chersonese, every region feels like a challenge to overcome, not just a backdrop. There are no level-scaled enemies. You’re not the chosen one. The world doesn't revolve around you—and that's refreshing.
You start off poor, in debt, and relatively powerless. Your greatest enemies? Hunger, thirst, disease, the cold, bandits, and your own arrogance. Each journey you plan becomes a true expedition—meticulously prepped, full of uncertainty, and absolutely memorable.
🛠️ Mastery Takes Time… And That’s the Point
Outward demands patience. It demands failure. And it rewards persistence like few games do. When you finally learn how to chain your magical sigils, how to efficiently pack for a long journey, how to dodge and punish a Wendigo without panic—you’ll realize: you didn’t just level up your character, you leveled up yourself.
The co-op experience (local or online) makes the game even richer. There’s something incredible about struggling side-by-side with a friend, carrying each other through battles, bleeding out together in caves, and triumphing over odds you thought impossible.
🕰️ Easily 100+ Hours… If You Let It In
Outward isn't a game you master in a weekend. It's a game you live in—often through trial and error. If you allow it, it’ll consume dozens upon dozens of hours, not because of addiction or dopamine hits, but because you’re invested. You want to see what’s over that mountain. You want to find that rare ingredient. You want to explore every legacy dungeon. You want to become more than just another vagabond with a rusty sword.
💬 Final Thoughts
Outward is messy. It’s frustrating. It’s punishing.
But it’s also unforgettable, rich, immersive, and incredibly satisfying. Like learning to play an instrument or mastering a difficult recipe, the reward lies in the journey, not in being told you’re special from the start.
If you can look past the rough edges and embrace the struggle, Outward will give you one of the most rewarding RPG experiences of the last decade.
⏱️ Time Played: 40+ hours
🎯 Verdict: Highly Recommended (for those who like challenge and immersion)
🏆 Personal Rating: 9/10

Bought this game in order to play with a friend, we've been playing Valheim and Enshrouded and this looked to be in the same genre. The game is basically unplayable in co-op, since only the host get rewards from quests.
We tried to slug through 2 hours of gameplay, but had to give up as the game design was just so frustratingly poor for co-op.

I highly recommend this one. It is a game where the journey is the destination. You are thrown into a complex world with little explanation and have to figure out many things by trial and error.
It is best compared with Kingdom Come: You are not the hero. You are just trying to survive and even a basic level enemy can kill you, if you are not careful. Everything is inconvienient. Even more so than KCD. You get no magic map marker and no arrows that point you to your objective. You have to listen to quest givers and navigate to your objective on your own.
The very best part I think every other game should seek inspiration from is the inventory.
You are just a human and can carry only so much on you. All the other stuff you put in your backpack. Which of course is a burden in Combat, so you can drop it quickly.
So managing what you put where, what you actually need in combat and even what to loot is something you are constantly deciding.
TLDR: The best game for if you want to really feel like you are on an adventure.

This game didn’t teach me how to survive. It reminded me how sacred survival is.
I began each day with intention. I drank from the chalice, not out of thirst, but out of reverence—each sip restoring more than health.
I stood still beside the fire, unmoving, anchored not by fear but by clarity. Even when the world was loud, I returned to the flame. I let my focus drift, but never without intent.
When the cold bit through, I did not run. I turned to face it, clean in body and mind. The ritual is the path, not the reward.
Most will walk these lands and call it a game.
Some will feel something stir and ask, “Why does this feel wrong?”
That is where the journey truly begins.

I've tried so many times to enjoy this game, but its obtuse to say the least. Combat is absolutely horrid. 90% of enemies can 2 to 4 shot you, most of them you just waddle around while you strafe around them, waiting for the constantly attacking to stop, so you can get a 3% of their total health hit in.
I LOVE hard games, but this is pure jank. Nothing works as you'd expect from real life or other game experiences, combat is just clunky as all hell, healing takes absolutely forever, a curse or disease can lead to hours of running around the world looking for a cure if you don't want to wiki, all this leading to the game just feeling like a slog.
Learning skills, building a spec in this game is just nauseatingly teadius. You could want to do something in the game, say use a dagger, but you have to travel across the fucking entire world to learn how to attack someone with a fucking knife. WHY.
I'd compare this to Project Zomboid in philosophy and tedium, because thats all this game is, tedium.

I enjoyed this game so much!
This game is best played with a friend, and I recommend first time players to not explore each "land" until a quest brings you there, otherwise you will experience a lot of repetition.
There are certainly going to be things people won't like about this game, but they were huge pluses for me and my immersion, including not having a compass with markings, no map markers for quests, and you don't see your own character on the map.
The world was very interesting and beautiful, and the music is AMAZING - and that is coming from someone who turns music off in most games. All of the areas were really unique and the starting town is really cool. The world can feel a bit empty though at times.
Cooking is really fun in the game. My favorite RPG to cook and brew in ever.
The challenge of the game is great. Having to take weather into account with your clothing, being punished in challenging ways when you die and not simply being able to click "load," requiring rations to travel between regions.
The game has some quirkiness the way The Guild or Kenshi do, but I had a ton of fun with it and I eagerly await the second!
My top areas for improvement would be to see more full wilderness areas and to align the dialogue and subtitles. :)

I love Outward! It has one of the best magic systems in rpgs I've seen. The whole "no fast travel" is easily solved if you just use the code sonic. There's a reason the devs put that in the game and let people know about it, so you had the option to not just walk or run everywhere.
Combine it with the merc skill tree and you'll never run out of stamina.
I like outward enough that i bought it three times, the original edition once on ps4 and once for myself on steam and I also gifted it as well.

this game is fun... but with no transportation and can only walk from town to town is kinda annoying. like walking from cierzo to berg and died in the middle way just to respawn in cierzo again? daymn... its annoying punishment i got. my brother even said this game is sleeping game (we sleep while the character is walking). a like the part that you get mana by sacrifice your health and stamina to leyline. its not like other game where you get mana the moment you start the game/gain mana by level up.
but this game is better when you play with friend.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I havent been able to play a game that has all the great aspects of an older RPG, with EXCELLENT graphics (if youre playing in 4K), and also be able to drop in another player just WHENEVER you want or need to on split screen or even online play. awesome story that changes depending on all of your personal choices, alot of quests are time based from the moment you get them, so if you were supposed to save someone and you dont do it in a ttimely manor, they WILL DIE. awesome, just awesome. several endings and factions to choose from. magic has its major benefits but also comes at a price and you cant just spam out spells (if youve even learned to do so) meanwhile youre doing all of this while trying to survive.... 100/100, 10/10, 5/5. you MUST BUY THIS GAME. (WARNING: this game is very hard)

could be a good game, though there's no direction, combat is clunky and too punishing. just feels like you should always avoid fights cause its not worth it. Waaaaaaaayyyyy too much running and backtracking, really disappointing because it feels like there's almost something there.

This is one of those games that takes hours to experience just 5% of what the game has to offer and by that time your refund window is gone.
Also, coop is a miserable experience because the core combat mechanics of blocking, breaking block, and staggering are broken due to difficulty scaling. Enemies become bullet sponges that never get staggered and using heavy weapons is suicide because they will ALWAYS out-trade you and you won't hit hard enough to stagger them, again, due to multiplayer HP and stagger bar scaling.
This game might be okay as a single player experience but I bought it to play with a friend. I'll try modding it and see if that fixes things but I'm probably just being victim to the sunk-cost fallacy.
Edit: Nope, game tries to do lots of things, does none of them well. Basic combat mechanics feel bad, target lock sucks especially with 2 or more enemies. Skills aren't rewarding. Taking the L and moving on.

"My god, this is the 20th time I'm running across the entire country. Could it have killed the devs to add an immersive but perhaps super costly way of fast travel for fuck's sake?!" is a thought you'll have constantly.
If you followed the devlopment of Outward, you'll find the main dev wanted this game to be difficult because of "realism/immersion/challenge".
Do you enjoy being constantly sent back to random locales with minimal health and mechanics that punish experimentation with class builds? Do you enjoy running around 20 minutes with no progress (and minimal map direction) just to rest in a bed or just to be killed by a random mob and sent back? If you are playing this game solo, then GOOD LUCK. The world is extremely bare besides that. You're better off just modding the game to get over the gigantic hoops that were included to ensure you get past the 2 hour limit for a refund.
At the price of five dollars, this game isn't worth it. However, if you enjoy tearing your hair out and slogging through gameplay, then this one is for you.

Outward is a slow paced adventure about camping and preparing yourself for the day. Some people would say don't play it like dark souls which I would agree with at first but once you get an understanding of consumables and your equipment you can give yourself the ability to fight like that temporarily. But to get there you need to be prepared to fight patiently more often then not, scope out what you want to fight and use items like rags to buff your weapon accordingly and traps to get every advantage you can.
This game also supports any players greedy mind. The main method of growing stronger is equipment and silver that you use for said equipment or on trainers that give you skills and passive abilities so you want to get as much of it as you can. But you can only carry so much, as you have pocket space and a backpack at any given time with limited space but the genius behind it is that you can go beyond your limit. Once you go over your carry size for your pockets or bag it instead of stopping you in your tracks gives you a gradually increasing slowing debuff to your speed as you increase the weight over the max. Its also based off of the percent over your bags carry weight so a bigger bag can cram more pounds of extra stuff with the same amount of slowdown as a smaller bag with much less equipment. So you end up if your me after a good dungeon delve slow walking to town happy about my haul thinking about how much money Ill have earned and what Ill spend it all on.
The game is great fun alone and even better with friends as theres a lot you can do as a team to make life easier. Magic isnt as simple as I push the fireball button, there is a fireball but to cast it you must place down a flame sigil which enhances your fire magic allowing your simple spark spell to become that fireball while standing within it. The fun comes in when both players have the spell you can share a sigil to get twice as much fire power. Of course combat isnt the only thing that coop makes better as camping is the main way you mend major wounds. The way camping works is you choose how many hours you want to spend sleeping, on guard duty, or repairing your equipped equipment. Having a second body with their own choice of hours to spend means if one player is more wounded the other can take more guard duty or one can repair with the extra time given by a pal.
Last thing I want to mention is that while the game only supports two players by default there's an extremely easy to install mod manager that lets you browse mods for outward, one of which is called raid mode and it uncaps the player limit and scales the gameplay according to how many players you have and I can safely say it rocks. I have played so many different games with different people and have played in big groups up to five/six members at a time and its still fun to me to this day. I very much am looking forward to outward 2 and one of the things Im most excited for is more music by the same artist that made the first games soundtrack. If you take away anything from this review, please please please go listen to the games soundtrack. Its soundtrack perfectly embodies the sense of adventure with beauty but lurking dread at what could be out there!
Sorry if this was kinda all over the place.
Im passionate about this jank little game and just wanted to ramble a little.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about Outward, but my conscience requires me to give it a negative review. The game feels actively hostile a lot of the time.
- You can very easily lose your initial starting home. If you die during the first week, the time skip resulting from death most likely causes you to get your initial crafting stations & stash access removed until you buy it again.
- Upon death, depending where and how, you may be unscathed, lose items from your inventory or your armor slots, or become trapped in a dungeon with less resources than before. It's very easy to cascade into multiple deaths that pull you further and further from your initial objective.
- There is no marker on the minimap, which is fine by itself, but it compounds how badly you get waylaid from a single mistake.
- Resource pool damage exists, making attrition a core mechanic of the game that basically amounts to resting after each individual fight in tough zones.
- Hits don't stagger enemies until half their poise is depleted and it's hard to chunk through until you get significant upgrades. This means most enemies will farm revenge hits on you until you just get better, or get skills that fix it (like shield bash).
It's not even necessarily a bad game, but it doesn't respect your commitment. These issues can get better with in game work done to mitigate, but that will never change that at the drop of a hat you can lose your best gear if you slip up once. I lost motivation when I got handed the best equipment in the game after fighting a middling boss in the second biome. It feels so bad because the multiplayer focus and seamless integration is an absolute joy, which is why I have 80 hours played mostly with my partner.
If you are determined to buy, buy it on sale. I don't really regret the $6ish CAD, I'm just glad I didn't spend more.

it's not exactly bad but..... While i could figure things out just fine there is still very little explanation on how to do things, combat is not good as the only strategy is to waste more time than its worth to gather items to sell for better equipment when enemies right outside your starting area are already over-powered considering the game just started making crafting weapons not worth it as better bought weapons barely help. Not to mention the mining prison is a complete time waster so no wonder they gave you a wormhole to help escape but also takes all your items unless you agree to waste your time to get it back from the fortress when combat is clunky and enemies are also bogus.

Rough around the edges, but what's here is a game that can best be labeled a glorious adventure sim. What stands out most in Outward is just how immersive it can be. If you are the type of person who preferred the aimless wanderlust of Baldur's Gate 1 to the fast-travel driven "points of interest" that unfortunately replaced it in the RPG genre, this is a game you need to try.
Yes, the combat can be clunky at times. Yes, the world could benefit from being more populated with friendly NPCs. And, yes, the save system can be both a blessing and a curse. But what remains, despite those misgivings, is a singular treasure for people seeking an adventure.
Pour a glass of your favorite beverage and go explore. And don't open that Wiki page whatever you do.

I'm having the best time playing through this with my husband. The game gives us near-total freedom to go where we want and do whatever we feel like. We plan all of our outings and work together to make smart decisions and not only survive, but grow our strength and explore further. The sense of adventure is my favourite part.

First 10 hours were terrible. Every critter would kill me. First, learned to avoid combat and build my character. Than, slowly learned how to block and also use the auto target to aim block. Then I would not get killed too often. Learned to escape also helped me. Past 50 hours now, I can fight couple critters and win. Progression is slow, learning curve is steep. If you are patient person, you might learn how to win this game.
Overall, ~ 9/10.
Graphics, wow! 10/10, game runs great at 4K on my 6770 radeon card. Everthing maxed out I get ~ 120 fps. Did no tweak anything.

Outward gives you a sense of brave and free adventure, and it's super exciting. The feeling of progression also is what makes this game great.
Some people may argue about how clunky the combat game play is but it what makes it unique. It offers players to be patient and work on their timing on each enemies they face.
One thing that I feel like it needs to be added in the game is mounting system. Players spend so much time walking from one city to another and it often leads to frustration. I suggest adding that to Outward 2 even if devs must set a pricy amount of silver to purchase those. The mount may also act as a backpack or the extention of the like -- giving players more carrying space. Or perhaps, devs can go with a skill tree route, setting it to tier 3 skill for it to be more attractive to learn.
Overall, game is great and has a wonderful replay value due to its quest lines.

This game is criminally underrated it has insanely in depth game mechanics a very diverse enemy pool plenty of weapons spells and skills for multiple play thru with different builds and a large map with varying regions and weathers best off all some of the most seamless co-op iv ever played being able to drop in and out of your duos game to your own super easily id say the worst thing about this game is the fact that the steam algorithm hasn't taken this to 100,00 other players the trailers do none of the graphics justice iv been stunned by ray tracing thru the trees at night while traveling with my duo couldn't recommend this one enough PLEASE make the second one me and my girlfriend love playing this and cannot wait for the memories to come of the next one

I think I can finally, comfortably recommend this game. I have plenty of mixed emotions about the aesthetics and overall game design. It's pretty janky and for several reasons I would not recommend it at full price.
But if you get it at $20 USD then it'll be a game that grows on you over time.

i bought this game yearas ago, i played like 8 hours at that time, didnt like it much.
Tried again recently, playing it for the exploration, mostly running around, doing quest, im still not good at fighting, its hard but now that im not in a rush, i can enjoy the game a lot more. im at around 25h now and its honestly the best gaming i had in the lasst 2 years.
Its not easy, and thankfully there is a wiki now to help, trying not to use it much but its still usefull to get out of though situation.
I would highly recommend this game especially if you can play it coop.

I want to like this game, but don't. I was really hoping it would be more like the RPG's of old, but it's not. You constantly have to eat and drink (which in theory is good, but in practice is terrible), but the food and drink you need to use take up too much weight in your pack. Can hardly carry anything, even essential items. Takes too long to get from one location to another.
The condition icons when you're injured, hurt, or need something are very non-intuitive and you need to go into the information screen to find out what's wrong with you, and if you don't pause the game properly, you will still get attacked and die. The save systems is terrible and you can get stuck in a dungeon losing all the things you gathered from constantly dying, or wake up in some random location and not know where you went.
This game takes WAY too much time to play. I you have no life and want to grind at it 12 hours a day, then it might be for you. My time is too precious to waste on a life-consuming game. Glad I only paid $5 for it. That's about what it's worth.

gave it a good shot with 7 hours of game time but ultimately deciding to drop this one.
The main reasons why I didn't enjoy my time is because I spent more than half of it walking around the map, it just got really boring. In addition, I felt that there was no sense of progression, just felt weak in every combat encounter since the first one, even after getting better equipment, I was still taking considerable damage from all enemies.
The game by design doesn't hold your hand with the quests and the world, you are free to go and explore as you'd like, personally this lack of direction didn't aid in my enjoyment as I already felt a lack of progression, I didn't know where to go or what to do (which resulted in more boring walking), I tried following the main quest and made it to the 2nd map but just got destroyed by anything there.
It seems like there's some cool elements here but I can't recommend a game I am not willing to put more time in myself.

If I wanted to play 'Get One Shot Sim' id go play DarkSouls. Enemies wait for you to strike to power through your attack. Character cant react fast enough to block after attacking. after some time the world actually feels empty too, and i don't mean to have 20 quests around every corner, but once you traverse the world in a straight line for 15 minutes, at least give me more variety of plants and stuff

PROs:
Nice pace in how your character grows
You can build and play your own way
Lots of ability variety and combos
Map doesn’t show your exact position — makes you pay attention to the world
Choice and consequences in quests (but only a few and not specifying exactly what happens when)
CONs:
Feels like a walking simulator sometimes
Your bag fills up way too fast early on
Random respawn — cool in theory, annoying in practice when you wake up on the other side of the map
Multiplayer is way easier than singleplayer
Map doesn’t show your position — which can be rough when you respawn randomly
I love how Outward handles character progression. Some choices in quests matter, and the world feels pretty harsh but fair (once you get used to it). The combat is clunky, but you kind of adapt. Honestly, even the part where you leave Cierzo and probably die to the first enemy you meet; looking back, I actually like that.
You can build your character however you like: go full warrior, add some mana, be an archer, or just go full mage. There’s a lot of flexibility, which I really liked.
The map is both a pro and a con. I actually like the idea of not knowing exactly where you are, makes you pay more attention. But when the game randomly respawns you after dying, and you’ve got no idea where it dropped you, buena suerte, amigo.
Exploring isn’t always fun. It starts off exciting, but after a while it becomes a lot of walking back and forth.
Explore a cave, fill your inventory, head back to town, sell stuff, repeat.
And if you die along the way, there’s a chance you’ll respawn on the other side of the map. I like the idea of different death scenarios, but not when it pulls you way off course.
Multiplayer is way more forgiving. You split the loot, sure, but overall it’s quicker and less punishing. I wish the singleplayer experience felt a bit more balanced in comparison.
What I hope for in Outward 2
Honestly? Just fix the cons from Outward 1. Keep the good stuff, but make it less punishing when it comes to inventory, travel, and random respawns; especially for solo players.

So, at first the game presents itself quite well, there is survival, open world, wooden combat (im quite sentimental), equipment management so on and so forth. Then suddenly, there is class teacher in first town which makes your shaft go warm or cold and gives general bonuses (kind of all-rounder). I seems to be good pick as starter to get plenty of generic bonuses before you go forward. Thou its quite expensive to get to main dish, name it fire or cold infusions.
As a good guy i played tutorial first which should give you directions how to play and it actually did. Yet the tutorial stated there are certain skills that REQUIRE certain boons to work. They took predator leap for example. its describe clearly stated it REQUIRES rage boon to work.
Back to Infusion. their describe says it will CONSUME certain boon... so i thought it will just nullify my boon if i use it while that boon is active. After all, it would be quite INCONSISTENT that in one skill they write it REQUIRES boon to work and in the other they will write it CONSUMES boon while it actually REQUIRES and i have impression that REQUIRES and CONSUMES are two diffrent words with diffrent meanings and yet here we are. And if you want to discover the game on your own and not read half of the wiki to check if there is a bullshit somwhere there... waiting... for your mistake youre in deep shit.
I invested couple of hours to get to that magical point and get my first mana skill "THE FIRE INFUSION" to go OUTWARD to other regions to begin my Epic journey. And it gets funnier, those two INFUSIONS are so uneven about the boons they need. while warm is acquired in only ONE place and as result of other skill which gives it only in certain regions and the other has like 8 or 9 means to get it, it is just sad.
Imagine the plethora of yet undiscovered INCONSISTENT bullshit that awaits you further, and the worst of them all... they did it on purpose just to make this joke of a game more "COMPLEX" and meaby "DEEPER".
As you can see this is my very first review i wrote. i just dont write reviews but these devs are so obnoxious that they made me break my principles. I heard that they are making OUTWARD 2, they should immediately stop and engage in more fitting activities... like physical labor in the nearest quarry or something.

One of the most annoying and incomplete RPG games I've ever played. It's impossible to play the game without entering some codes. If you play without using the speed cheat, it takes hours to get from one place to another. It's a no-brainer not to add fast travel to this game. It takes hours to find your quest. If we could at least put a mark on the compass, we'd know where we were going. If you play the game melee, you'll make the mistake of your life. Almost every creature one-shots. Don't even try to play this game and waste your time

Clunky, inconvenient, really outdated graphics. It feels bad to play and the AI behavior is annoying in the way it reacts to things, like dodging an arrow that it can't even see coming. The frequency of micromanaging is also annoying. A lot of great ideas but the execution is horrible in many ways.

Now I like this game however I can not personally suggest this to anyone for one simple reason, it isnt fun unless you are willing to personally work hard to make it fun. I quit this game and had to come back to it at a later date 4 times until i finally started to enjoy it and I think most people who go into this blind will have a similar experience, theres many situations and mechanics where the game will beat you with that will ruin your experience. If you really want to enjoy the game youll either have to spend a large amount of time and patience learning the mechanics in game or watching an hour worth of guides online before you can actually play it, even then it'll probably take multiple hours of playing once you get the hang of it to have fun. Because of that I just cant recommend it.

Love that the first enemies are always in pairs before you can get gear that will let you even the odds. Pretty messed up to beat the shit out of new players instead of teaching them.
