My time with Victory Heat Rally was undeniably fun. Nailing a tricky drift and rocketing past CPU opponents is satisfying, especially when the nice spritework of scenery objects pass by at a blistering clip while rock-infused electronic songs fills your ears. The excellent menu UI helps cater to the mammalian part of the brain that wants to get to the good stuff (the core gameplay) as soon as possible. At the same time, there are so many weird discrepancies and small issues that my time outside of driving left me disappointed. Basic info like what the vehicle stats do or even what my finish time was on a race are outright unexplained or hidden behind screen transitions. Pausing while drifting continues to play the drifting sound effect despite no other SFX playing. The news broadcast intermissions before playing on a new track are uneventful and mostly get used to show how one-note the unlockable drivers are. If you can mesh with the core racing gameplay of Victory Heat Rally, you will have a good time. Otherwise, I have to recommend that you spend six hours on other games you know you will enjoy.

Without a doubt one of my favourite aracde racers ever. It has such a sick poppy art style that reminds my old ass of some classic new grounds games. It has an amazing soundtrack a great sense of humour and really fun character designs. If you're looking for a mario kart fix and couldn't get a switch 2 this should fill the void.

This one is a tough call, because it does essentially do everything it says on the box, and it's very clear about what it aims to be and how it goes about doing that. My main issue with VHR is that it feels underwhelming; for as beautiful as the stylized graphics are and as bopping as the soundtrack is, the experience of actually racing begins to feel very monotonous early on, since drifting is the only real means of player expression. I'm all for a stripped down arcade-style experience of this sort, and I genuinely enjoyed the moment to moment gamefeel of races, but I often felt that outside the track itself, the game wasn't offering much for me to do. There's very little in the way of optional content to seek out or unlock, and as the monotony of the main playthrough wears on, it starts to occur that there's more room to expand even in the aesthetics; why not take the basic tropes of the genre that are already well-executed here and turn them up past the max? More visual flair, more wild announcements and cosmetic options... well, that seems like it would have been a good direction to go, anyway. Instead the core gameplay here is quite well-refined, but the actual package of the game lacks motivating aspects to compel more playtime. I'd argue that the ~2 hours I got out of VHR were decently fun, but I don't see myself going back to finish it any time soon, and that's a bit damning of an overall experience for game of this price. Overall, unless you're absolutely diehard into the retro arcade racer aesthetic and/or you have some friends that want to do multiplayer, I wouldn't recommend this game, though it has a lot of promise, especially in the art-style and car handling/gamefeel.

This game is super fun and feels great to play, if you are on the fence about it, it's definitely worth getting on sale.

Good art style and fun gameplay, It is easy to learn, but hard to master. The most important technique to learn by the middle of the game is how to change the direction of the drift while keeping the boost going. there are some tracks and events that requires you know how to do it, if you want to win.

Controls are overly twitchy, drifting feels inconsistent, and AI difficulty is all over the place. Either you win effortlessly or get destroyed with no middle ground. The handling never feels satisfying — more like you’re wrestling the car rather than driving it.Performance isn’t great either. I ran into stuttering and visual glitches more than once, even on a decent rig. The UI could also use a lot of polish — it feels clunky and unfinished.

Barely skirts into positive. The art is amazing, another blend of 2D and 3D. The story is serviceable, even surprisingly all right, for the genre. The gameplay is good, I liked the drifting mechanic. The side races range from average to bad - I could not, for the life of me, win any of the boost races - and most are timed, HOWEVER: TIPS: - a handful of side races can be skipped (thank you, devs!) as long as the required number of points is earned in order to progress - the driver can be changed at any time during the championship (outside races) by going to the garage; I found this to be mandatory, or I'd've been left in the dust All in all, START YOUR ENGINES!
