After playing Half-Life Alyx for like the 12 time, I needed something new to scratch the itch. As a casual fan of the Metro series, I wasn't even aware there was a VR game. It was on sale, I was fiending for something new, so I pulled the trigger. First, it felt like a Metro game. I'm not a big enough fan to know how fitting the story was to the universe, but it mostly worked for me. One of the only negatives I have is that it felt like it leaned a little too hard into dreams/hallucinations, but it's a minor nitpick. The story was satisfying. While not as polished as Alyx, the gameplay is very smooth and intuitive. I actually prefer the way Metro handles using weapons over Valve's solution. If you want to draw or holster your side arm, you reach down to your side as one would in real life. It really gives the impression that you're drawing and firing a pistol. While there are multiple secondary weapons, you can only quick-access one at a time. You have to grab your backpack (another cool thing,) and select the secondary weapon you want. Then, you can grab that weapon by reaching over your shoulder. The backpack itself is a very cool concept for VR. Your gas mask, extra canisters, secondary weapons, grenades, lighter, and power charger are all attached to your backpack that you can grab. It is really annoying in the heat of battle, but that's how it would be in real life if you didn't plan ahead. While there are some more minor complaints, all in all this is a very good game AND a very good VR game. Nothing is lost for people who haven't played the other games. It is a stand-alone story, so people who haven't played the other games shouldn't be confused. If you liked Half-Life Alyx, but wished there was a bit more realism, then Metro is absolutely worth the money. Heck, if you like games and have a VR headset, Metro Awakening VR is worth it.

Most of the gameplay itself is okay, there are a lot of good ideas, good gun handling, some really interesting game mechanics, and it's all bogged WAY down with tons of bad ideas, flaws, and missteps, including the game being so dark that you can't see anything in front of you, they keep pulling the "oh no your flashlight is dying" scripted sequence that does nothing but make you think you have to charge your flashlight battery, which drains way too fast even in normal situations anyway. But it's even worse when your flashlight keeps flickering for about a half hour of gameplay nonstop and you can't even charge it. This isn't even getting into the fact that this is the worst story in the series, the story has almost nothing to do with the original series except that it takes place in the same setting, and introduces completely ridiculous silly story elements. Not to mention that there are several giant unskippable scenes that you simply have to sit through, which aren't interesting or funny or anything, they don't build on the Metro setting, they're just there. If you love the Metro games and want to play one in VR, and you HAVE to get this, try to get it on the biggest sale you can. I had a few good times in this game, it's about half a good game mixed with half a bad game. Giant disappointment.

Metro Awakening was a great experience. I can recommend this game without a doubt. It is not as long as HalfLife: Alyx nor as complex, but somehow it came close to HL's greatness. Shooting is great, the whole backpack mechanics is also great. Finally, I witnessed an improvement in VR games. I wish more games had packpack mechanics like this one instead of body mechanics. The story is okay. It is sad and in typical Metro tones. During the travels, I saw a lot of devastated metro corridors and trails. Personally, I had only two issues with this game. The first one was objects, a lot of them were untouchable, it seemed to be normal, but sometimes a chest with supplies was a decoration, and sometimes it was not. So, some objects could be more distinguishable. The second issue is related to cutscenes. It was weird when out of nowhere I became a ghost floating over the character's body, or when I had to witness a scene like from Metro 2033, only in first person on VR. The worst case was during a ride on the rails. I have lost the ability to look around and almost fell irl due to the dynamics of the scene. This should not have happened in a VR game. The game also requires some backtracking. I understand that it makes sense in the story, and it is a metro, so usually there are only two ways, forward or backward. The same locations are reused, but this story (at least for me) is not a journey like Artom's journey. It is more about running in circles in madness. In conclusion, great experience and I recommend it to anyone who likes Metro

I like the game so far and will change my review once I finish the game, but for now my thoughts are mixed and I wish I could rate the game mixed. Pulling out the backpack to do stuff feels very clunky (Dominant right hand) and the interactable world feels very much dead? Apart from boxes none of the shelves can be opened and the loading screens being pitch black void just... kind of takes me away from the world very often, and the world feels more disconnected cause of this and I hate the immersion being ruined. I love all metro games, but I wish they cared more about immersion here. Story so far is intriguing.

If you genuinely enjoyed Metro 2033 then will have an awesome time here. This feels like the earlier games but with a new story on VR. I personally think it feels cool to wipe off your gas mask and have to recharge your light. Those things never became tedious and just add to the feeling of the world you are in. If you are looking for a balls to the wall action game then I would not come here for that. If you want a slower FPS horror game with optional stealth then I would pick this up

Overall game is pretty good comparing to other VR games, but it just doesn't meet expectations There are some really positive sides, but not too many: + Engaging weapon handling mechanics, fighting with human enemies or stealthing somewhat interesting + Thrilling horror segments (especially with spiders, brr) + You begin to emotionally attach to some characters throughout the game And that's all, from the opposite side there are too many negative moments: - Clumsy controls, sometimes you can't just get ammo or pistol because protagonist grabs backpack or something else instead - Visuals are poor, there are not many details or interactive objects, too few assets and whole game happens in metro (no any segments on the surface) - Game is too long for the amount of content it has, you just become tired from the same turret segments, backtracking, etc. - The last level in the game is just LOL, what a shame. No epic final battle, no emotional relief, it's even more boring than the rest of the game - And listening whole game to English dialogues with extremely broken Slavic accent is a torture (honestly, we don't speak in such way). Not sure who's idea it was, IMO it would have been better to had adequate English or fully Russian voice over

A superb Metro experience, beginning to end. Some of the stylistic choices the Vertigo team made were insightful and risky, and although some people won't like that, I thought it was a lot of fun (ie. third person panning cinematics). Story was well written and voice acting was great. Although the story wasn't the deepest, it still matched the somber atmosphere of the Metro universe and was engaging enough for me to follow along with. Surprisingly the music was A+. It just hit different when a nice strings orchestral piece fades in during a dramatic moment. Sound design was excellent and really helped with the immersion factor. Gunplay is tight and fun, and unforgiving if you don't aim. Survival/scavenging mechanics were present, but not entirely difficult. The frugality of ammo did have me counting my bullets during enemy engagements though, which added some difficulty. There isn't a ton of enemy variety but the immersive gameplay allowed me to look past that. I just enjoyed stealthing around regardless of what i was murdering. Enemy AI was surprisingly good, as they would attempt to flank you and also take cover from your shots. The spider enemy mechanics were super cool and interactive. It really made you feel like you were fighting something actively crawling all over you and helped build suspense during heated moments. Pulling it off your face and sticking your gun barrel in it's fangs and just blastin' was definitely a top moment for me Give the game a try! It scratches that immersive shooty shoot FPS itch with added atmosphere and lore. Lots of fun and a wonderful 15 hour experience!

I was looking forward to this game as i love the franchise. Unfortunately when i loaded up the U.I. is unplayable with my vive cosmos elite handhelds, with out spending an hour massaging the settings out of game. There is only a small number of VR headsets available commercially, it wouldn't take much to have an optimisation menu in game, so i don't have to learn python or C++ to play the game. ( note I'm not a computer literate gamer and i may be whining like a b*%$h which is unattractive but i feel like if they do the monumental work to make the game the U.I. is kinda relevant to all players) I'm not giving up btw its just my first impressions.

Metro 2033 in VR Is Pure Survival Horror, and It’s Brilliant. Metro has always had scary moments, but in VR, it’s on a whole different level. I played on Hardcore (as I usually do), and early on I was constantly running out of ammo, resorting to punching my way through enemies. It genuinely feels like a survival horror game now, not just a shooter. The sound design is absolutely top-tier. Every echo, whisper, and growl feels dangerously real. Combined with the haunting soundtrack, the atmosphere is oppressive in the best way. The visuals are strong and the world feels deeply immersive. The VR mechanics are excellent. Inventory is intuitive, gunplay feels grounded and punchy, and the controls work smoothly. I do wish there was more level variety. You kind of go through the same locations and backtrack a bit, although they remain terrifying. While the story takes a strange, supernatural turn that was confusing me. In the end, it stuck the landing, leaving me emotional and tearing up. Stealth sections can be a bit frustrating (especially if chasing after the achievements). But gunfights are some of the best I’ve experienced in VR. They are exhilerating and I found myself leaning and switching between cover trying to out maneuver and take cover from flanking enemies. It’s not as interactive as Half-Life: Alyx, but let’s be honest—nothing else is. Still, this is a standout VR experience, and a must-play for fans of horror, survival, and the Metro series. Can’t wait to see what they do next in VR. Hopefully more larger scale VR Metro games.

This game is the reason I bought a VR-set. Metro has always been an instant-buy series for me, since Metro Last Light was one of the games that got me into gaming as a whole. Seeing this one announced made investing into VR a no-brainer. And as Metro has always been about immersion, atmosphere and tension, it truly is a match made in heaven. Managing your gear, by hand this time, feels great. Highly recommend checking this one out. That said, some minor grips. Firstly, the second part of the game starts to heavily reuse levels. This makes sense from a developing standpoint but it was noticeable. Secondly, we never go topside. A missed opportunity although I imagine they wish they could have. Thirdly, exposition is delivered in a static way, having you stand around listening. Not the most engaging way of doing it.

I recommend it with a giant caveat. Only on sale for less than $20. The reason is that it’s too repetitive and uses the same environments and assets over and over to drag out what is for the most part a boring slog of a campaign. It is also far from a AAA game like you would expect from this franchise. It is indie through and through and plays like a Quest port even on PC with effects turned up. Many textures feel like low res JPEGs, pop in happens frequently and some assets just flat out disappear. The physics are not great and not everything can be interacted with which kills immersion. There is nowhere near as much depth as the flat games and the part I disliked most: it didn’t feel like an adventure. It felt like a slog through a very boring repetitive environment for 16 hours! The environment never changed and never let you explore the outside world… In my opinion, a VR mode of any of the existing Metro games would be far superior to this game. That being said… There are SOME good moments and the gameplay is genuinely fun at times—particularly during some of the more challenging stealth segments, which admittedly were pretty difficult on normal difficulty. This was probably due to the brutal checkpoints and frustrating artificial scarcity but they worked nonetheless. In summary, if you have nothing else to play and you’re a fan of Metro or long, single player campaigns, this game may scratch the itch just don’t expect anything close to its flat, AAA counterparts.

Metro Awakening makes no compromise. After playing all the other Metro games, I can honestly say this is a true Metro game. If you are a fan of the original series, and you're a little brave, you will love playing this game. If you have played half-life: Alyx, this game isn't as long or engaging, but it gets damn close. It is, however, significantly scarier. Main takeaway: this is a solid VR horror-survival game.

I don't know why, but I gave up a few hours in. Maybe I was bored, maybe the annoying controls finally broke me down, maybe it was something else. I just knew I was regularly wondering when the game was going to end and that wasn't a good sign, and when I looked up my progress every now and then, when I saw that I wasn't even halfway through, I wasn't excited that I had more than twice the experience left, but disappointed that I wasn't even halfway to being done with the game, so I stopped.

I bought the game and couldn't play it for sometime and now I still can't play it because I'm stuck on the sign in screen and my controllers don't work because the devs have not included WMR support for older WMR headsets like my Samsung Odyssey.

Boring doesn't even begin to describe it. Devs, play Half-Life: Alyx — if your game doesn't come close to that standard, don't even bother trying.

I am writing this review about 1 month after finishing this game, so bear that in mind.
I bought this on sale, and expected a metro last light with VR POV, but boy was I surprised.
The game has some props/elements, which you can't interact with, but I didn't expect it to be that detailed. Gameplay part: I've watched 0 walkthroughs, played the game on easy difficulty. I remember every time I heard something, I instantly reached for my gun, checking every corner and nervously waiting for the 'crawlers' to show up. It's insane how good the horror aspect of this game is - suffice to say I was paranoid the evenings I played the game, so not good for the faint of heart. spoiler:
the listening to the child's laughter mechanic f***ng broke me
- Ran well on my 3070, AMAZING graphics and great lighting. - English dubbing, I ain't reading subtitles in VR. - Shooting weapons is fun, reloading mechanic is great. - I think that all the usual metro doodads such as winding up your flashlight battery was reworked very well into VR. - IMO buy only on sale (here from 40eur -> 23eur). Overall: Amazing metro VR port, great mechanics, intriguing story, but short... and I still got lost around the map...

As a fan of Metro 1 and 2, this VR experience captures the atmosphere perfectly. It has its flaws (pacing, grabbing stuff, low munition, few enemies), but nothing too awful. All the little management things that you do in all Metro games (charging flashlight. putting gasmask on/off, wipe mask, reload, lighter, grenades) feel SOO GOOD and it adds to the VR experience. Looking forward for the next game. ++ crossbow kills and reload 10/10 ++ i will remember the singing pipes chapter for the rest of my life, jesus 11/10

As a shooter the guns were fun to handle, and very easy to reload. As a stealth game, not as good. Maybe because its vr, but I had a very hard time trying to sneak past enemies. Every time I threw a object, they would never investigate. Where every time I tried to get close for a melee, they would hear me when I was 10 feet away. The story though is very good, I've never read the metro books, but I have played Metro Exodus. Now, after playing both games I want to give the books a try. The creep factor mixed with action in both games has me very interested in how its handled in the books. I will say this game is very unique, in how it handles terror and not horror. Which is a big gripe I've had with horror games for a while. (terror being fear of the unknown and horror being just scary) There are some moments where you see something and get a laugh out of it. When you are expecting something big and scary. Then you turn to your left and see something goofy just looking at you. But those are rare, what the game really dose right is the creep factor. With dead bodies, and dark corners you can barely see into, it adds a level of terror that I find very few games manage to get right. If you are looking for a good vr shooter game with story, I'd first recommend playing Half-Life: Alex. It is FAR more polished that Metro Awakening. With cleaner graphics, and more satisfying physics, it generally just preforms better. But if you don't care, and find an odd item clipping into the wall like it shouldn't funny. Then Metro is an amazing game. Solid and fun game. 8/10

so far so good. i did purchase this on sale. I think im on chapter 4. I dont want to criticize the actually fighting in the game yet. haven't ran out of ammo yet so im not sure what happens if im in a battle and run of ammo. The story line seems kind of boring. I paid $15 for this game as a bundle price so I'm happy so far. so far so good again. I tried to get an hour per dollar i spend so thats good.

Absolute gem of a VR game. Easily one of my favorites in the medium up there with Into The Radius 1 and 2. Strongly recommend if you're a metro fan or just a VR enthusiast. The A.I. gunfights in this game are probably the best i've ever experienced in the genre. They feel fast, tense and frenetic. The gunplay is extremely satisfying and the way the enemies take cover and run around makes firefights feel really dynamic and exciting. Definitely utilize cover and corner peaking. Makes you feel like a badass. The game does reuse the trolly gunner section a little bit too much towards the ending but i personally found them to be really fun, so i wasn't complaining. And this game is pretty much a perfect transition to VR for what the metro games are. This is EXACTLY what it needed to be. The backpack is really cool and intuitive, and the gas mask sections were always a treat considering the mechanics of having to wipe the mask and physically change the filters, it was incredibly satisfying. I've been with this franchise since the day the first game launched on PC and Xbox 360 back in 2010, so i'm a bit biased, but as someone who does really enjoy VR, i do genuinely believe this is a fantastic VR game. And there are some fantastic ghost sequences in this. The sound design and visuals of those bits were top tier. The negative/mixed reviews seem odd to me. I definitely think theres a bit of a barrier to entry in understanding that theres design choices that this game makes because its fitting into a pre-existing franchise that already has a formula that works great. Metro 2033 and Last Light both have very linear progression/exploration. Theres a few sections where you can explore, but the areas were always really limited in scope. Not a bad thing considering the setting its based in. If very TIGHTLY linear bothers you, thats perfectly fair, but it just seems like an odd complaint considering the setting. It sounds like they're annoyed that the metro is a metro- thats like walking into a burger joint and complaining that all they really have is burgers. You should understand what you're getting into is my point. Also, this is probably the best story i've experienced in a VR game. I don't really think with VR that gripping narratives are required as i feel that the mechanical depth of a game is more than enough to be enticing, but the story here was genuinely pretty great, and it had some really touching moments, Big plus for the medium of VR. I would give this a 10/10 personally. I think its amazing and a lovely addition to the franchise. I love all of these games but i think this just might be my new favorite for everything it does so well.

i purchased this game because i wanted another vr game, i gave it a go and was i surprised by how great this title actually was. the story was driving, the action was intense. i really wish that more games were like this. ans i would put this right next to half life alex for narrative action and fun. also this game is often pretty spooky to be honest. 9/10

So far it's pretty fun, ran into a bug where my first ever gas mask did not spawn but restarting the chapter fixed it. The aiming is accurate and the gunplay and mechanics are on point. The tutorial seems a little off mostly in that I didn't know where to grab new magazines from at first. I also wish I could have my rifle over my left shoulder and my pistol on my right however it matches your sidearm to whatever side your dominant hand is. I like being able to keep a hand on my main weapon and pull my pistol in a pinch. Your other hand is your heals. Those things in mind it's still a very good feeling game and good looking in my opinion. It fits the metro vibe and so far i'm really enjoying it. If you've read the books there's some great call backs to it as well. I haven't beaten it yet so I'm hoping it goes somewhere as a plot point. You can swap weapons kinda, I found a nice pistol and swapped my rusty one for it. Good to have some more metro in my life. One of my favorite series of games and books.

I keep sinking into the ground up to my knees. During the prologue during first attack, while using the machine gun, Initially I'm at the right height, start shooting the rat things but in a few seconds, I always sink below the level of the wall with my knees at ground level while standing. The gun is above my head about 3 feet. I can continue to shoot by reaching up to the handles/trigger but can't aim or see what I'm shooting. The after about 10 seconds, I get thrown back about 6 feet. I walk up to the machine again but my head still remains below the height of the wall in front with my knees at or below ground level. This make the game unplayable. I've tried 5 times. This keeps happening so I'm giving up.
