This is a masterpiece. The story is so touching, filled with oh-so-much love. Its purity heals. Read it. I have only read one story, and it already moved me so much, taught me lessons, and explained things that one would take months or years to learn—at least I think so. Read it. You won't regret it one bit.

Just play the first 5 minutes of the game. Just those few minutes will tell you everything you need to know about the tone, music, story, characters, everything. And if you can stand reading and are willing to give 1/3rd of your free time this year to this game, then absolutely do it. If you value your free time just a little more and really like Nagisa, then the anime path is for you.

After about a year of playing Clannad on and off I finally finished it. To put it short it was so so beautiful. My favorite routes were Nagisa, Fuuko, and Kotomi. But they were all pretty enjoyable with the exception of the Fujibayashi sisters routes which I personally found to be super dragged out and a little bit ridiculous. Tomoyo's route was okay... Mei's route was surprisingly sad, Yukine's was refreshing and AfterStory.... AfterStory simply destroyed me. I won't say much about AfterStory because its a whole experience, I couldn't even find the words to describe fully how I feel about it but it made playing this game for a whole year absolutely worth it. And I'd say that spending all that time with these characters made the story even more impact-full. Technical stuff: Soundtrack is amazing some might even say that it makes the game as great as it is. I didn't like the opening (MagMel) the first time I heard it but now, its a banger. Also Snowfield destroys me every time. The artstyle, while not the best technically, will become iconic once you spend enough time with the series. I especially love how the artist renders hair. I found that some of the cgs however were a little bit akward and repetitive as in same composition, subject matter etc etc. The translation was good I can tell they did their best to adapt the gags as best they could and it works because Sunohara is realllly funny. Should you watch the anime or Play the visual novel? As of now I haven't finished the anime (what I have seen is the beginning of the original series). From watching just that alone I can tell you that the vn is way better and more detailed. Some of the scenes in the anime got cut really short and left me dissatisfied. But I can't be too mad because KyoAni makes everything absolutely gorgeous. Haven't watched the big one yet (AfterStory) but at least for the school arc- novel wins. Also note that the visual novel if you want to read after story is a bit of an investment so if you simply don't have the time the anime is a great option. Whichever way you decide to enjoy Clannad, I hope you have fun please give it a try!

Overall I really enjoyed clannad. Most of the humor landed for me and the important emotional moments the game tried to hit were very impactful. I also felt that the game had a very fun cast of characters. However I do feel that there are times where the game leans too much into melodrama for the sake of trying to be sad and can be a bit contrived or silly. This mostly happens in some of the routes in the first half of the game that's set in high school. I felt that the writing in after story is much stronger overall. The main character can also be a jerk which pulled me out of the story at times. I liked the themes the game tried to explore around family, the cycle of abuse, growing up, dealing with grief, etc. The ending was satisfying but I have some reservations about it that I can't get into without going into spoiler territory. Overall would recommend if you like visual novels, coming of age stories, or romcoms and can deal with some cheesiness and anime tropes. --Edit-- I feel like I have to mention that even though that his personality can sometimes be being a prick that I appreciate that MC guy does at least have a unique voice. When first starting the game I feared that would he would basically be Whitebread McSelfinserto and fortunately that isn't so.

Buy Clannad. If you have 50 euros, buy Clannad. If you don't have 50 euros, sell your chair. If you don't have a chair, sell your bed. If you don't have a bed sell .... My first experience with a Key VN. If you never cried from a game, it's your time to. The stories were hand crafted by god to make anyone touched and feel something for characters. Characters also seem very real in a way how they react and convey emotions. They feel human despite looking like Sunohara. Story builds attachments towards some characters, some routes are less touching while others make you want to help or feel bad for them. HIGHLY recommend to follow guide that you can find online, while also not spoiling yourself for future decisions. If you didn't cry for whole playthrough of Clannad even once, you should reconsider your life choices.
