The campaign is short. Just when you finally get to use the big toys, the game is over. There is no career mode, no sandbox mode, none of the things that added replay value to MW5 Mercenaries. Then I bought the DLC and it was just another extremely short campaign. There's nothing here worth the price of admission.

Based on my experience I only recommend this game to those in the audience who align with two of the following: - Playing MechWarrior 2 on the family PC in the 90s is a core memory - Mecha - Want to know more about the BattleTech Universe Sometimes the 5/10s for the broadest audience are for you as a member of the target audience.

This game was clearly slaughtered by project creep, and a fetish for the newest, least proven, and most uncanny graphics. The devs tried to do too much, focused too hard on improving the things that were actually fine continuing to be good enough, and accomplished very little. The mechlab should have been one of the strongest selling points for this game, but it's just a giant, lackluster, frankly confusing, mess. Keep in mind I have over a thousand hours playing MW5. I am not a tough audience to appease. I lost the patience to keep affording this game chances to prove itself after 10 hours of mediocre

Waste of time and money. Another Piranha game. Armor inflation out the yin yang. The game feels like you are hitting the mechs with pool noodles and waiting for them to fall over of exhaustion. The only thing your clan mechs are better for is a bit of range and target fire. So, you are basically relying on Piranha's inability to program an AI enemy and your magic ability to have absolutely pin point damage because only you can aim. Functionally the game comes down to maxing out lasers, boating as many as you can, and then just pray you've slathered on enough 'bonus' armor to last the waves of potatoes that spawn within 500m, as you get endlessly ''ambushed!'' Ironically you have more freedom and mech customization in Mercs than in Clans... What a shit show...

I've been a Battletech / Mechwarrior / Mech Commander etc fan since I was a kid...in the 80s. Did this scratch the itch? Yeah..it has! If you're a long time Mech fan (or new), there's not really much reason to not enjoy the game. Now I see certain types of complaints so I'll address the two main ones. 1) Limited Mechs available in game. Well..firstly..that make sense to me! Yo're only going to get the mechs YOUR clan deems worthy. Innersphere mechs are considered outdated by clanners so you wont get them in this game (but you'll fight them). I'm going to guess more mechs will come with more expansions based on each clan...but subject to that spesific expansion / story. 2) No sandbox or career mode. Well..it's a linear game. It tells a story! Maybe one of the expansions will but for now..no! Personally I think it's a good sister game to Mercenaries. They kinda balance each other out in my eyes (not that you should have to buy both of course). Mercs lacks in it's story telling where as Clans lacks in it's expansiveness. If you're a mechwarrior fan, you'll have bought it already. If you're new to the franchise, yes..it's fun. If you're simply wondering how it runs...amazing on my PC but I have 7800x3D and a 4090 so do with that info what you will.

7.8/10 I'm a guy who has played all of these games on PC. It all started when I was a kid and bought the Battletech board game 40 years ago and exclaimed: "What? You get to pilot giant 100 foot robots???" * mind blown "i'm in." and I never looked back. I even put 2500 hrs into Mech Warrior online. Not the most strategic game, but I loved it. As far as this one goes, it feels more like it's going back to it's roots (Think MW2)...and I couldn't be happier. Now if I could just get a lancemate or 2 to play with me!!

MechWarrior 5: Clans really is a game i wish Steam had a middle option for. If you are a Battletech fan this game will be mixed. If you are not a Battletech fan there is a bit to love, but I feel even non fans will have mixed reactions to this game. The game is split into 2 modes, Campaign and a horde mode. You unlock more horde mode maps as you progress through the main story and if you buy and start the Ghost Bear dlc it will unlock the main campaign horde mode maps instantly. You still have to play through the dlc to get the dlc horde mode maps though. As far as the campaigns go, it's honestly not bad as far as the story is concerned. It is funny if you do know Battletech lore and know how the Clan Invasion ends though. Now to give a comparrision to MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the actual mission are much better. They have actual structure and progression vs Merc's simple and static mission pool. If you liked Mercs, then Clans might not be the game for you, it has none of the sandbox elements Mercs had. There is no travelling the universe on your own terms, the campaign is a linear campaign more in line with the older MechWarrior games. Some systems are even more simplified than Mercs as well. Take the armor system. There is no adjusting armor in the front and rear like you could Mercs, now you have to buy armor modules to put on your Omnimechs. Now as far as gameplay is concerned this game has some horrendous balancing. If you played Mercs you know that your mech has armor and components that can get stripped and then destroyed as you progress a mission. In Mercs you face far fewer enemies per mission than what you face in Clans. Clans hurls at least 10-15 mechs at you on the earlier missions, but by the end of the game, you will be taking on 20-30 mechs per mission. This means that you will come out of many missions with missing components, stripped armor, and it can't be fixed completely before your next mission. If you are starting your MechWarrior journey with Clans, then I implore you to play on Story Mode difficulty for your first playthrough, otherwise you will die and fail over and over and over again. Even then if you are playing on Story Mode difficulty you need to invest in mechs with lasers. Lasers are the best weapons in the game by a longshot. If you aren't using lasers, you aren't stripping armor and downing enemies quick enough to mitigate damage to your mech and that is on top of doing things like Torso Twisting to make your important components harder to hit. Your ally npcs are also as dumb as a box of rocks and will constantly walk in front of you while you are firing which causes you to damage them because friendly fire is on no matter the difficulty. Enemy npcs are also really dumb thankfully which you can exploit. The horde mode is a horde mode, if you have played one you know what to expect going into this one. Back on the story front I have to hand it to Piranha Games for deciding to make the main story about the most hated Clan both inside and outside the game. Smoke Jaguar is one of the absolute worst Clans who are hated both in universe and by the Battletech fanbase. Only other Clan to get as much as them anymore in Clan Wolf, but that is because Clan Wolf are Catalyst's favorite, so their writers give them all the plot armor and wins. I'll give this game a recommend simply because there is a good game here, but I hope Piranha gets the mod tools released soon so the fanbase can actually balance this game's abysmal balancing. However given it has been 7 months, it might not happen until this game gets it's second dlc.

TL:DR - Just a fantastic mech combat game through & through, bolstered by a genuinely engaging story. All killer, little filler, just pick it up and play it already! As an OG Mechwarrior who's been playing this series on PC since the mid-90s, I am thoroughly impressed by the way that Mechwarrior 5: Clans manages to hearken back to those halcyon days of gaming whilst bringing enough updates to the formula to keep the experience fresh (and modern). Whilst I didn't hate Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries, I also certainly didn't love it, and had no burning desire to finish the game. I am also, in full disclosure, a big fan of the newer PC version of Battletech; true, it didn't do everything perfectly, but it did enough things well to compel me to beat it several times. To be honest, Mechwarrior 5: Clans feels like the best possible mashup of Mercenaries and Battletech, with story and gameplay elements working hand-in-hand to equal a product greater than the sum of its parts. Yes, Clans is at times hokey and overly reliant on a few archaic Mechwarrior/Battletech rulesets, but that's what you get when you play these kinds of games. Don't like it? Then don't jump into the cockpit, you freebirth ground-pounder! Ultimately, what you get out of Clans will be heavily dependent upon what you allow yourself to bring in (like any game). It's simplified enough that new Battletech/Mechwarrior fans can jump in relatively easy, whilst featuring enough tweaks and advanced options to appease longtime players. The story is enjoyable enough to keep you playing, providing a nice backdrop to all the mech-on-mech combat. Controls are pretty spot on, the dialogue is well-acted (albeit corny as hell, as expected of a Mechwarrior game), and the sound effects are serviceable enough (if not particularly amazing). But, everything comes together well, providing a well-crafted and pretty long adventure to sink your teeth into. I picked it up at near full price, and I have absolutely zero regrets.

A much better implementation in the MechWarrior franchise. While there are minor irritants in the game ("Press any key " - oops, you mean 'click the mouse button only'), the story, the graphics, the AI and many other aspects are leaps and bounds beyond what was experienced in MW5 Mercs. This game also does not need a mountain of Mods/Add-Ons to stand on it's own. The MechBay is a little wonky, but as it is no longer central to the advancement of the stoy or play, it is not as cataclysmic as MW5 Mercs needed it to be. This game reminisces of MW2, closer than any other iteration. The music is kinda forgettable (I can't even think of one tune to hum...), whereas I still remember MW music themes from other franchises. What's up with the mouth animations (they seem unnatural - but the full video animations are nearly as trashy as they could be). Overall a much improved MW implementation. Happy I picked it up. Worth the price, good game.

Every mechwarrior game that comes out the mech customization gets more detailed and the gameplay gets dumbed down. I feel like I'm playing "big halo" more than piloting a robot. The writing is middle school tier and predictable as hell. But the game is still fun, mechs go brrrrr.

A fun game with great visuals and gameplay, but also suffering from a terribly unoptimized engine. This game could be made great, but for now I'll enjoy playing and forgive the ridiculous ragdoll mech kills. EDIT: i love it because the movement makes it like a rail shooter, and the aiming like a gallery shooter. A fun combination! Simple mechanics aside, this game has good character arcs that describe the ambitions imbued through socialization, and how compliance can be guided through attachment to career goals. A rich take on warrior tradition leading to empowering actual tyrants! Still, the ragdoll for mechs is painful. Also, bring back heavy metal music.

My brother and I really enjoyed Mercenaries, so we were excited to try this one too. I think we are pretty average-level players of the game, and we were getting destroyed on the campaign missions. We switched to story difficulty, and were still getting absolutely demolished in missions. After failing the same mission twice, we gave up. The game is just too difficult to enjoy, and losing should barely even be possible on story difficulty. Seems like the only way to win is to max lasers and wait for your NPCs to do the real work before you move into range at all. Waste of time and money

Bloated pile that doesn't run smoothly or well. Mods for the Core MW5 have less issues than this spinoff.

Game is pretty good. I'd give it an honest 8/10 especially if you like mechs stuff or cockpit sims. The open universe thing of MW 5: Mercenaries is sidelined for a narrative driven game about the MW Clans. Needs mods support (which they say is coming) and needs more mechs variation with more weapons.

The most cinematic Mechwarrior game we've had, and a massive step up from PGI's previous work. Where MW5 Mercs felt like a shallow sandbox with a thin and poorly executed plot overlaid, but all the core mechanics working well, this one feels like a true AAA game which builds on the previous foundation, and isn't afraid to tackle subjects like the horrors of war in the story mode It has its niggles, occasional AI (which are very good this time round) pathfinding issues, and inconsistent optimisation of maps. But these are easy to look past for what's a brilliant story

I remember playing mechwarrior 2 as a child all the time it being my favorite game for years. This game reminds me of those days the Nostalgia is fantastic. It is not perfect but if you are a fan of Mechwarrior 2 and havent played a mechwarrior game in a while and especially when its on sale I would not hesitate. It's not mercenaries and I wish it had some sort of free roam or simulation but besides that I am pleasantly surprised!

Crazy how this series is still so shit. The sad result when there is no competition and just a few fans hyping bad to mediocre content. Mediocre is already overpraising it tbh. Movement is clunky. Not mech clunky but just shitty clunky. Combat is pointing at an enemy and clicking until you target something new. Movement is too slow to add mechanics like evading/dodging. There is a very limited jump booster but it just makes you lose control over your mech, can't shoot anything and everything can target you. Team mates are useless but to act as damage sponges until you kill everything on the field. Controlling your team is way too big of a hassle. Also right away disable friendly fire because they just love constantly running in front of targets to get accidentally shot by you. Right from the start all upgrade paths are unlocked to view. Also forget about unlocking or buying anything because it's all locked behind 4 different currencies/credits/ranks/levels. The missions are just go to place A, kill everything that spawns, slowly walk to place B, ... Just zero variation. After a few missions you're already thrown into missions where it's impossible to win with your newbie gear. You're supposed to defeat 30mechs but nowhere do you get ammo or repair. Also you haven't unlocked anything better by that time. That's because they want you to refarm missions you already done which is crazy in a story-driven single player game. Ah yes the story. Just standard boring crap but I don't expect it to be good in a mech game. We're only here to sit in a mech and shoot big guns. But the devs think they wrote the best thing in the world and half the game constantly interrupted with blablabla. There is still no mech game that comes even close to the joy of configuring and playing with mechs as Front Mission Evolved did. Getting so tired of devs who don't know what game they're making and who want you to play 200hours in a game with 10hours content. Just let me play your game and move on ffs. edit: Also, you can't save in the game. Yes it is this kind of devs across the whole game. Can't blame this on management or publishers. Just bad game design.

I sadly cannot recommend this game due to technical issues and very clear laziness from Piranha Games. If you want to use HOTAS, you will find the same issues from MW5 Mercs here. You will need to Google for external config files, paste them in, then modify them. The game itself runs very poorly. MechWarrior 5 Mercs also ran quite poorly; this is not GPU dependent as I have an 6900XT and Nvidia currently has crashing driver issues; this game both crashes and lag spikes from 100 FPS down to 30. Speaking of crashes, it crashes regularly in menus (thankfully not gameplay yet.) All in all, it feels like this should have been a MechWarrior 5: Mercs DLC, but instead they switched from UE4 to UE5, kept all existing technical debt as per the HOTAS and performance issues, then put the game up for sale. The game is fun, the IP is amazing, but Piranha Games is very poorly managed and clearly does not give a shit about player experience.

There has not been a better Mechwarrior experience. Excellent story and missions, great gameplay. Its better than even my rose coloured glasses view of mechwarrior 2. PGI have come a long way since that initial MW5 campaign, and now look so confident in how they deliver story content.

A linear game with many choices and options and a way to test the mechbuild! But the menus still sucks to navigate through; fgr all menus. The omnipod menu is the worst, but you can live with it. Missions are surprisinly long and it's fully voice acted and animated. Unlike MW5, these missions are premade; so no random stuff that could go bad, and repair bays and ammo is where you expect where it's is. So if you like Mechwarrior 3 and 4, you will like this game! However... the way how to beat the game is like MWO, slap on as many weapons as you can and drill through the CT.

Overall recommended. The writing could use some help, but it was ok in general. There were a couple story surprises that were also fun, but otherwise a bit general and not ground breaking story wise. Gameplay was enjoyable with some missions being a bit ridicoulous. Overall 7/10 definitely buy it on any sale. The DLC is better than the main game.

This game has many enjoyable things to it, but mission are ridiculous. I am a casual player and would like to play through the single player game enjoyably. But, they are mainly, kill this group, and then the next one and the next one and the next one. It does take some fun out of it.

Best Mechwarrior since MW4 Mercs. Goes back to that game in a lot of ways and all of them are good. We get a more linear story, and we get a hard cap on what mechs we can get and deploy. The tonnage limits are looser in this than in Mechwarrior 5, and many improvements to both UI and team management bring this game much more into line with greater older titles like MW3 and MW4: Vengeance. Gives you a good natural sense of progression, bringing in heavier and heavier mechs as you build up the prestige to acquire them and the drop weight. Great game. Lots of fun. Great controls. My only real complaint is that I wish you had a bit more variable story line like in MW4: Mercs. I've heard the Ghost Bear DLC addresses some of that, haven't played it yet.

An experience this cool, at this price, and after all those patches that bettered the players experience? Yeah, easy buy. The basegame story is awesome, and it follows as faithfully as possible the events that befell Clan Smoke Jaguar during its invasion of the Inner Sphere. The vibes of the game are pristine, and are only further enhanced if you know the lore behind the events portrayed - the Clan's foolhardiness and battle-hardened naivete, the (often self-harming) ruthlessness of Inner Sphere combatants, the crushing tech superiority of the Clans and the unfathomable numerical superiority of the forces of the Great Houses. I'm writing this review even before finishing the game or playing the Ghost Bear DLC because it keeps leaving me awestruck and in such a good mood, even after getting my ass kicked in some fights.

This is a great game I really enjoyed my time with it. steam deck compatible and I love the controller setup. I really like the overhead map or tactical map that allows the player to give orders to computer teammates and it’s really fun to use, reminded me of the old rainbow six games love it definitely a highlight. Really liked the music really good stuff. The game had some crashing but mostly ran well, the games difficulty is bad like really bad unfair difficulty spikes no matter the difficulty chosen by the player, that being said I have faith in the developers Piranha Games. This team worked really hard on MechWarrior5 mercenaries and it shows, it took a few months but the team continued working on that game and now it's awesome, this team has proven they will stick with a project and finish it awesome.

Awesome mech game. No sandbox long term play time like Mechwarrior 5 Mercs. But much better storyline play. Especially DLC GhostBears. I hope they add a better new game + eventually. But mod support is incoming and is hopefully as inclusive as Merc's DLC. Regardless, excellent game. DIfferent take on omni pods and mech customization than TTRPG rules but still good, and a defined improvement IMO. Fair warning, no engine modification for omni mechs, and no changing skeletal frame or armor type to manipulate available tonnage/crit slots, as well as no engine mod options like small or XL engines. Also, initially the game launched and Extended Range Small Lasers were godly. You had to get close, but their cooldown, low heat, high DPS, and precision made them the best weapon by a LOT. Latest patches improved missile performance. LRMs (long range missiles with lock on capabilities) have a place now (still underpowered IMO but better. Artemis improved missile clustering system still good on LRM15+, also IMO). SRMs (dumbfire short range missiles) are back to being a solid shotgun option with SSRMS (Short range missiles that lock on and have limited tracking) are a solid choice in a mech that can boat them (hold a lot of missile hardpoints). Ballistics still struggle for relevance. The middle tier LBX cannons perform well enough but require a good amount of lead. Meaning you have to move the cursor off the enemy to hit them with LBX, then back to the enemy to hit them with lasers while the LBX reloads. Standard and sensible issue, but their performance doesn't quite measure up to the negatives of lead time, ammo, and weight. The fast af firing UAC cannons felt better to me in-game, but damage wasn't quite as solid as LBX. Suppose that's the trade off though. UAC20 is a ridiculous cannon firing shells bigger than people (if memory serves), and being able to fire it again during reload at risk of jamming is fantastic when you've got an enemy ALMOST down, but need one more heavy hit. Might jam after, but it is an awesome moment. Mods can fix a lot of this immediately and they'll hopefully be offering up more awesome DLC over the years. Go pop some blood bags yall!

It's ok. If you are a battletech fan and want to experience the invasion of the Inner Sphere through the eyes of a Smoke Jaguar Star Commander then this game will give you a certain feeling of nostalgia like back when you were sitting in your room in the 90s with the technical readout 3050 on your lap. If you played previous Mechwarrior titles you won't have any problems outfitting your mechs and bring them fourth into battle. The characters are believable and in my opinion true to the source material. Although the constant "we have to save civilians" trope to make the clanners look like the good guys (which I think they are) is a bit too much. The biggest flaw this game has, is the mission design. Because you need something to do and not just walk through empty maps, the game throws waves after waves after waves of enemies at you. 30+ enemies per mission is not rare. Now the enemy faction can't overrun you with all their assets at once which would make the most sense tactical wise, but then you would die instantly. So instead they dripfeed you with waves of 3 to 4 mechs at a time, sometimes supportet by tanks or helicopters. If you are thrown into a mission with higher stakes, you will get an additional star of NPC controlled mechs (which will be justified by the story) so that you have a chance to survive the mission. You can give orders to your team, but you will mostly use F1 (all team members) -> F1 (Attack my target) -> rinse and repeat. And those Dezgra have a talent to run into your weapon fire. Now although this sounds aggravating, the game is still fun. If you are a fan of Battletech/Mechwarrior and if you like to tinker with weapon loadouts, then you won't regret buying it. Maybe wait until it's for sale, though.

I'm going to finish the game, and then maybe update this review, but 11 hours in and it is very lackluster. The game has no depth. I money grab. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this game. Clans are supposed to have advanced imaging and such, why can't I get advanced zoom? I can hit an enemy where its legs meet at the current zoom with an ERPPC at max range, but all I see is what looks like a black stickman. I'd like to be able to enjoy the graphics of this game, they're killing my machine with the new Unreal 5 engine and yet most of the enemies I'm fighting I don't get to get a good look at them. In a somewhat opposite direction, I also miss the enhanced imaging of Mechwarrior 2. I would love to see a newer version of that. How do the clans not have thermal vision? You're the same company that made Mechwarrior Online, and I know you're cutting costs by using the models, which I'm ok with as it keeps a consistent appearance and feel for the mechs, and if you cut costs on artwork you have more money for things like a better story and features. So far, the story isn't bad. It's actually pretty good for a Mechwarrior game. And, I wish the claners didn't use money to purchase mechs, but if I don't think about it too hard the way I manage the mechs does 'feel' clan-like even if its not really. I mean, I should have requisition instead of money and be able to trade mechs back for full value and then get other mechs.. you know, like a sort of military communist organization, which the clans are. But, if I think about the Kerenskys like requisition points it sort of works... just the getting less value back part doesn't make sense to me in clans. It makes perfect sense in Mercenaries, or even if I were to play as a house leader in the Inner Sphere. This game is missing a lot of features, and some of them really don't make sense to be missing. Why wouldn't I be able to at least upgrade for advanced zoom?

Proper stompy Mechwarrior with EXCELLENT story, animation and voice acting. Includes some slightly 'arcadey' elements that took me a little to get used to but that really do service the game experience. Much more of a clearly directed narrative experience than most of my other forays into the universe, but truly a great addition to the videogame canon.

Authentic and lore accurate campaign, with solid character development and moral choices. Best single player MW to date IMO (hot take but bare with me). I played most of MW and BT entries over the years, I played the table top many years ago. I know a thing or two about the BT universe, and this entry is a labour of love many are not appreciating imo. This should have Very Good rating and people who want good games to come out and companies to take chances should support games like this. Meanwhile this section is filled with vastly inadequate "reviews" and baseless complaints ... guess we will be getting more trash games we deserve bc we clearly can't appreciate passion projects ... Pros : - Very good and detailed depiction of Clan lore. - Good characters and character building. - Very good campaign (40+h if you want to do everything while challenging yourself) with a branching path and 2 endings. - Very good depiction of Clan tech via mechlab (omnipod system etc.). - Details matter like vastly improved cooling with heat sinks in legs while standing in water (depicted via hud icon). - Handcrafted missions that actually push the narrative forward. - Very good graphics in story fragments. - Good Battlegrid mode and control of your Star. Cons : - Some relatively useless mechs, the game requires you to maximise the loadouts and some mechs simply don't have the capacity to be effective enough. - Could use more missions utilising light mechs. - Graphics while in-mech are a mixed bag, some great effects but a lot of bland textures etc. - Minor: some volume jumps with dialogue line delivery (especially for Perez).

While the game even after a year or so after release is very much struggling in the performance department ,and the flashing effects when your cockpit is being directly hit is extremely fucking annoying, in general the game is pretty enjoyable. Most definately much improved after it's launch. It deffo needed another year in the oven.

It's not perfect, but it's a worthy entry in the MechWarrior series. Story-wise, it has more than MW5: Mercs, and the development team did their best to be as lore-accurate as possible. The characters are not Mass Effect material, but at least they're interesting enough to keep you invested in the game. The patches have optimized performance on NVIDIA GPU's with DLSS, and the GB:FS DLC has me excited for what's to come.

Very fun game, it made me meow many times, specially for the price. Bought it with my familiar to play and we are having a very lovely coop experience. Once I had found the right settings for my laptop, it became stable. For once in a game, I have been watching the story instead of skipping it. Music is pleasant and graphics very lovely so far. Loading times are shorts, missions are long and tough, but not endless. Once you got your paws acquainted to the controls, and you unlock techs / mechs, it becomes a very positive experience. There is a simulator where you make real XP for your characters when you replay mission / practice. Will update my review once I have played the DLC. Glad I stuck with it and worked to fix the settings and to learn to pilot. Made me purrrs very hard, would buy the main game again a 100% !!! See ya in the next review feline friends <3 <3 <3

Amazing, best MW game so far. The battle map is the best part, being able to pause the game and give orders.
