So here’s the thing: I loved BioShock. Like, “still think about it while brushing my teeth” loved it. So when BioShock 2 came along, I braced for disappointment. Everyone told me it was the “weaker sequel,” the “unnecessary cash-in,” the “awkward middle child.” But you know what? Those people were wrong. BioShock 2 slaps—and I will die on this rusted, leaky, underwater hill. From the moment you boot it up and realize you’re a Big Daddy, the tone shifts. You’re not a confused outsider stumbling into Rapture—you’re part of it. You know its decay, its cruelty, and now you’re stomping through it with a drill arm and a deep sense of regret. It’s like BioShock, but from the other side of the porthole. The combat? Vastly improved. Dual-wielding plasmids and weapons? Yes, please. The drill? Incredibly satisfying. The hacking mini-game? Thank you for not making me play pipe dream again. Everything just felt smoother, tighter, and more fun. I was still setting things on fire and electrocuting Splicers in puddles, but now I did it with the confidence of a genetically modified scuba dad. And the story? No, it’s not as twisty as the first game, but it has heart. Actual, emotional heart. Sofia Lamb is a fantastic antagonist—ideological, manipulative, and terrifying in a cold, clinical way. The Little Sister dynamic? Beautifully expanded. The ending? Genuinely touching, depending on how you played. I didn’t expect to feel things while stomping around in a diving suit, but here we are. Sure, it reuses assets. Yes, it doesn’t have the same surprise-factor the original had. But it builds on the world, gives you a new perspective, and actually manages to say something different about morality, identity, and choice. That’s not “less than”—that’s impressive.

PLEASE AVOID THIS GAME AT ALL COSTS!!!
This is coming from a person who 100%d this game.
- Is this a bad game? Nope, absolutely not it was phenomenal. Although BioShock 1 was better, this still hell of a great game.
At this point you are wondering if I am insane or not, here is why you should avoid this game at all costs:
Reason 1: The game crashes once every 5 to 10 minutes. There are fixes online that I found by simple google search after being frustrated a lot but start with this base; try saving it often. The game crashes a lot especially after long periods of gameplay. Set the launch option to -dx9. This should help smooth it teeny tiny bit. In order to do that, right click the game, go to properties, set launch options and type -dx9 into the text box. However, I hate any developer who is lazy AF to let people and modders do what they are supposed to do.
Reason 2: This is a big one; in case you missed the review explaining why 2K is a spyware company and injecting viruses and other means of malware into your kernel and steal your private information. Here we go detailed explanation I copied from the original reviewer why you should definitely avoid this game at all costs and any other products of 2K:
Take-Two and 2K games have updated all their games Terms of Service, turning this game as well as all of their other games into literal spyware.
Important Info in Terms of Service:

• Sensitive Information: Precise location information (if you allow the Services to collect your location), account credentials (user name and password), and contents of communications via chat features and functionality
So; after all this you might be asking why I got this in the first place; well I got this on a summer/winter sale sometime in 2020 or 2021. It has been sitting in my library alongside with many other games collecting dust and increasing my evergrowing backlog. Back then they weren't this evil so I didn't mind supporting them. Look, I play my games on an isolated PC where I don't have any private info stored. PC is just for playing steam games and that is it. So those woke freaks CANNOT reach my wife's or/and my daughter's videos & pictures and sell them to a data broker in China, India, Russia and Iran or even worse DHS. If you value yourself and your privacy DO NOT EVER buy anything from 2K and any other demonic woke corporations like 2K such as Microsoft, Activision, Bethesda, CDPR etc.
There's a good saying on the internet starts with "If buying isn't owning..." you might consider doing the rest. These demons should go bankrupt after all the illegal activity they have done. Their CEO was busted in a medieval themed restaurant with a USB full of illegal data on him. Think about it! There is a remastered version of the game so consider playing that if single player is all you want but they were so lazy they didn't import multiplayer on that one so did I hear. I will play that too and see if it is different than I will update my review to keep it accurate.

This game is awesome (indeed my favorite Bioshock, even if that opinion might be unpopular) but the PC port is terrible and crashes constantly. The remaster is even worse but I ain't reinstalling it just for another review.

Surprisingly fresh and better than expected. It might be not as good as the original game , but it still earns solid 8 out of 10.
Remember to save frequently as this loves to crash, crash, crash, cr...

Here is my take
First off I have been playing the Bioshock series ever since the Xbox 360 days, I practically grew up with them and they have a special place in my heart.
The game DOES NOT have spyware/malware. People complaining about "They take your personal information..." Steam requires an email to sign up, it requires a credit card to buy games off their platform.
Facebook, Tiktok and other social media sites have your email details, some even require your phone number like Whatsapp or Telegram you guys are fr beating a dead horse...
Now the actual game itself, do yourself a favor a don't get the remastered version because you will crash every 5 minutes (tabbing out the game, cut scenes, going near little sister vents,,etc). I know a lot of people don't enjoy this game or think the original Bioshock is better but I honestly think the opposite this game feels more dark and sinister to me yes the original bioshock had an AMAZING twist to the story and was well written but I think Bioshock 2 is just as good story wise. I like the game play of Bioshock 2 more, I felt like the first game always felt cloudy for some reason idk lol, and the fighting just feels better in bioshock2 in my opinion.
Anyways i love this game, and reccomend it highly.

All Bioshock is amazing. I think 2 is my least favorite of the three (Infinite then 1 being before 2). The game crashed after only 8 minutes. I'm going to try the Remastered version. But still, I'm leaving a positive review because the game is great!

Bioshock 2 expands on the original with a darker and more personal story, putting players in the role of a Big Daddy. The game maintains the atmospheric world of Rapture while introducing new plasmids and weapons that add fresh combat options. Its multiplayer mode offers a unique experience, though it received mixed reactions compared to the single-player campaign. The narrative explores themes of identity and loyalty, providing a strong emotional core. Overall, Bioshock 2 is a worthy sequel that deepens the lore and gameplay of the series.

Bioshock 2—yeah, I know, it’s the black sheep of the Bioshock series. It doesn't have the same punch as the first, but it’s still a solid game. You’re not just playing as Jack anymore; this time, you’re Subject Delta, a Big Daddy who’s been reawakened to find the world of Rapture in even worse shape than before. The whole thing feels like a mix of nostalgia and cynicism—you’re back in the ruins of a broken city, trying to put the pieces together, just like the people who created it. And speaking of broken things, let's talk about something even more broken: Nestlé.
Now, while you’re exploring the wreckage of Rapture and learning about the power struggles and betrayals that tore the city apart, Nestlé is out there doing its thing: exploiting resources, ruining communities, and selling water that should never have been taken in the first place. But don’t worry, I’ll get back to the game... eventually.
Back to Bioshock 2. One of the things that makes it unique is the Big Daddy perspective. Playing as a massive, heavily armored brute isn’t just cool—it’s a commentary on the nature of protection, sacrifice, and what it takes to survive in a broken system. You’re out there trying to save the Little Sisters—doing what the original game sort of made you question, and now you’re part of the machine that used to do the harm. The tragic irony of being the enforcer of a system that’s already lost control. Sounds familiar, right? Nestlé is a perfect example of this. It’s not just a company—it’s the embodiment of an industrial complex that was supposed to protect the people, but instead, it monopolizes and exploits everything it touches. Water, food, basic human rights—nothing is off-limits.
In Bioshock 2, Rapture is a city that’s been destroyed by its own greed and hubris. Everyone’s out for themselves. The elites, the splicers, the cult of personality—they all fed off of the ideal that individual freedom would lead to prosperity for everyone. But, as you can see, that didn’t work out too well. And, speaking of freedom, how does Nestlé’s version of freedom look to you? You know, that whole capitalist utopia they try to sell with their shiny advertisements about how they’re “changing the world” and “providing access to clean water.” I’m sorry, I had to pause and wipe the vomit from my mouth. Because Nestlé doesn’t provide clean water to communities—they take it, bottle it, and sell it back to people at a premium. Just like Andrew Ryan believed in “free-market” utopia, Nestlé believes in the free-market rape of natural resources, all for the almighty dollar. That’s right—Nestlé’s greed is literally the Big Daddy of real-life corporate abuse.
In Bioshock 2, you are, in many ways, a protector. You’re fighting through the wreckage of Rapture to save the Little Sisters, who are stuck in a cycle of exploitation. But while you're playing the protector, let’s take a moment to consider Nestlé's exploitation of the world’s most vulnerable. The company is profiting off water in drought-stricken areas, stripping away resources from places that need them most, and getting away with it, all while they pretend to be some kind of corporate saint. Have you heard about the way Nestlé has been buying up water rights and bottling water in places where it’s desperately needed? Yeah, that’s the real horror here. The people of Rapture had to deal with Plasmid addiction, but Nestlé is out there getting people addicted to bottled water. Can’t trust a damn thing they say.
And let’s talk about those Little Sisters. They’re an obvious metaphor for exploitation and sacrifice in Bioshock 2. They were created to harvest ADAM from the dead bodies of the citizens of Rapture—used by the power-hungry elite who cared more about profit than human life. Remind you of anyone? Nestlé’s child labor practices, for example. The company has been implicated in using children to harvest cocoa beans for their chocolate, which then ends up on your supermarket shelf. You see how this connects, right? Little Sisters—exploited for someone else’s gain, no care for the cost. Nestlé? Same thing—no care for human dignity, just business. Just profit. It’s absolutely revolting.
I won’t even get into the baby formula scandal where Nestlé pushed formula on mothers in developing countries—knowing full well that breastfeeding was safer and healthier, while millions of babies died because of this corporate manipulation. If that’s not evil, I don’t know what is. At least in Bioshock 2, the exploitation happens in a literal, physical form—you see it. With Nestlé, it’s a silent killer, working behind the scenes. No different than the splicers in Rapture, who wreak havoc on everything in sight, but with no real consequences. Nestlé is the splicer in this global disaster.
You might find it ironic that I’m comparing Bioshock 2 to Nestlé. But think about it—Rapture’s moral decay and Nestlé’s corporate decay are eerily similar. Both pretend to stand for something greater, but in the end, it’s all about profit at any cost—whether that means wrecking a city or selling the basic human right of water to the highest bidder. In the end, just like in Rapture, it’s the people who suffer. The most vulnerable always pay the price.

Following the critical acclaim of the original BioShock was no small feat. With the original developers at Irrational Games stepping away, BioShock 2 could have easily drowned under the weight of its predecessor. Instead, it resurfaces as a surprisingly thoughtful sequel — one that trades shocking twists for emotional depth and refines the series’ combat while returning players to the haunting ruins of Rapture.
Playing as a Big Daddy changes everything. In a bold move, BioShock 2 casts you as Subject Delta — an early prototype of the lumbering, iconic Big Daddies. Far from being a mindless brute, Delta is agile and emotionally tethered to a specific Little Sister, offering a fresh perspective and an unexpected sense of vulnerability. Combat is faster and more fluid than in the original, with the ability to dual-wield plasmids and weapons, making for a more dynamic and responsive gameplay loop.
Combat is more refined. Where the first BioShock sometimes stumbled with clunky encounters, BioShock 2 makes moment-to-moment action more engaging. Hacking is smoother, enemy variety is improved, and the ability to lay traps for incoming splicers during Little Sister protection sequences adds a strategic layer that actually works.
A more personal story. Though it lacks the revolutionary narrative twist of the first game, BioShock 2 tells a more intimate and morally nuanced tale. The relationship between Delta and Eleanor (your Little Sister) becomes the emotional core of the game, and your actions throughout genuinely influence her development. It’s a story about parenthood, identity, and sacrifice — told through plasmid-charged chaos and quiet moments of compassion.
Sophia Lamb makes a compelling antagonist. While she doesn’t quite reach the iconic stature of Andrew Ryan, Lamb is ideologically opposite: a collectivist utopian who believes in the sacrifice of the individual for the “greater good.” Her calm demeanor masks a ruthless fanaticism that gives the story a chilling edge.
Rapture is still Rapture — and that’s a good thing. The environments are beautifully detailed, eerie, and immersive. New areas like the decrepit amusement park "Ryan Amusements" or underwater segments that show Rapture’s desolate majesty help expand the city’s lore in meaningful ways.
It feels safe in some ways. While BioShock 2 deepens its world and mechanics, it doesn’t take the bold narrative risks that defined its predecessor. It sticks closely to a proven formula, which makes it more consistent but less surprising.
Multiplayer is forgettable. The addition of a full multiplayer suite — while novel — feels unnecessary. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t match the tone or sophistication of the single-player experience, and it’s largely been forgotten.
Some pacing issues. The middle section of the game can drag a bit, especially if you're thoroughly harvesting ADAM or searching for upgrades. It can create uneven momentum between the story beats.
BioShock 2 might not have been the sequel people expected, but it turned out to be the one Rapture needed. With tighter combat, a touching story, and deeper moral nuance, it stands tall in its own right. It may live in the shadow of the first BioShock, but it brings a human heart to the cold steel of the diving suit — and that’s something truly special.
If you loved Rapture and want more than just a return trip — if you want to see it through a new lens — BioShock 2 is absolutely worth your time.

As an addition to my review also left on the BioShock Remastered page. I now will leave one for BioShock 2.
I am typing this mere moments away from finishing Minerva's Den.
I for the most part enjoyed this game as a whole, but Minerva's Den was the standout. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the story much more than the standard campaign. I will probably change my tune if I play the remastered version.
I hope that version fixed alot of the crashing problems that plagued this version. But that was the huge turnoff for me with this version, as well as some really freaky audio problems that I had. I am unsure what the problem is, but the audio has this very strange effect almost like the game is processing audio for surround sound but the speakers aren't there, even though it was set to Stereo the whole time. As such it was much harder for me to hear simple things such as enemies behind me or even next to me without turning to hear them. Any sound effects had this problem, from cameras to enemies even NPC audio just acted bizzare and really detracted from my experience.
I was mixed on the revisions they made to the plasmid and heath systems. I liked that a eve and heath pack no matter what filled their respective bar fully compared to the original. But to be fair I didn't hate that design in the first game. Then to change the "expert" perks to add another slot to your inventory felt really boring. Better off to have left those 2 perks out completely, then make another hidden pickup to increase the holding capacity.
Plasmids now are bundled into 2 different categories, compared to the original's 4. But in order to accomplish this, the price for adding more slots increases the more you buy, it caught me off guard once I noticed the price jump. It almost felt like ideas were running thin on how to add or change plasmids between the 2 games. Some of them I really felt like they should have been removed or re-worked to fit the environment better. Namely the bug one, no bees anywhere in this story so context is strange if you haven't played the first one to figure out what it is.
There is a ton more little details that put me off compared to the original. But for now i'll just end with this.
I still need to play the remastered version and Infinite to get a proper comparison between all the games. But my rating lineup is as follows. Bioshock 1, Minerva's Den, Bioshock 2.
Still a good game, but not as good as the first one. When the time comes I still need to figure out if the achievements for the online mode are still possible to get. Yikes.
Rating with the DLC 7/10.
