Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen is first entry of the trilogy and is the remake of the original visual novel. While it offers a solid introduction to the world and its characters, the experience is uneven and may not be fully satisfying.
Cons:
• Pacing: Although sometimes the pacing may feel really slow, like the beggining, it can quickly change to a fast paced one, specially in the finall third of the game. This can damage the immersion on the plot and game. However I believe it is not a dealbreaker as many pieces of media have this issue. However it gave me cancer seeing how quick was the final third of the game completely disregarding the slow story that is supposed to be Utawarerumono.
• Combat: For a turn based rpg I was expecting more, not on the level of persona or clair obscurity but on the complexity side. It is by far one of the most Simplistic Combat systems I have ever seen and it just drags, sometimes up to 45min. Even though it is easy it can be frustrating.
• Replayability: Once you finish the story you have little reason to replay unless you are a harcore achievement seeker, in that case good luck as it is booring and dull as hell.
Pros:
• Compelling Worldbuilding: The game’s fantasy setting, rooted in ancient traditions and tribal politics, is genuinely interesting. It feels distinct from typical JRPG worlds and sets the stage for deeper lore in future titles.
• Character Development: Hakuowlo and his companions are likeable, and their evolving relationships help keep the narrative engaging despite its slower moments. This one is my favorite part of the novel. Seeing Eruru and Hakuowolo relationship develop, Karulau story and many more made me fell in love with the story.
• Art and Voice Acting: The updated visuals and full Japanese voice acting bring a welcome polish to the remake. Character portraits are expressive, and the soundtrack is suitably atmospheric. Want to say that Hakuowlo, Oboro and Eruru Voice actors really did bring the emotions and it was superb. The art also is really beautiful and in some scenes, like the one where Karulau is drinking, really brings the story to life.
Prelude to the Fallen is a serviceable entry point into the Utawarerumono universe, but it’s not without its flaws. Its blend of visual novel storytelling and strategy RPG elements may appeal to some, but the lack of balance between these components drags down the experience. Recommended mainly for fans of the series or those deeply invested in narrative-heavy games.
If I had to explain this game in a few words it is just the introduction to the universe of Utawarerumono and some of its characters. It serves as a good starting point but not a great one.
Score- 7/10
