If you enjoyed Mask of Deception, you really gotta play this
As a heads up, this is the final game in the trilogy and while you can get away with not playing Prelude
It's definitely more relevant here but it's all basically supplementary stuff
you really can't away with not playing Mask of Deception.
But as a follow-up to MoD, damn it's got some REAL STRONG MOMENTS thanks to its premise.
Giving away the plot would ruin the whole reason you play this so I'll keep it simple and say that I loved toning down the slice of life stuff in favour of a more serious tone. It still has its fun/goofy moments but there's so many more genuine moments of dealing with concerns, grief, drama, all that good stuff that helps flesh out characters and give them their moments to shine.
But while I think Mask of Truth absolutely has the highest highs in the series, this is also debatably the most inconsistent quality in the series yet.
For my liking, there's too many underdeveloped plotlines or lacking follow-ups from prior games that just makes me go "that's it?", the game's definitely longer than the prior two by quite a bit but I kinda wish it could've been shorter so there could be another game after this to develop certain plotlines and characters out a bit more.
Still, what we got isn't bad, like it definitely has its merits so I'll move onto the other selling point of Utawarerumono, that being tactics gameplay.
I say selling point but it's never really been that great, usually just a reprieve from the constant text or something to help sell the tone but I gotta say, it's definitely gotten a lot better since the first game.
You have a wider roster of characters to work with, enemies are placed with more thought, objectives are more reasonable and surprisingly the game was somewhat challenging at points which is more than I can say for the prior entries.
If you've come this far, you owe it to yourself to finish the trilogy
Even if it could've been better, there's still a lot of good to take away from this.
Number 1 selling point for this series for me has been Haku, and I'm more than happy to have seen how this journey ended.
