This is one of the coolest games I've ever played. I've been a fan of Dynasty Warriors since my younger days of playing DW5, and I'd yet to find a new game in the series that sparked the same kind of joy, until I found this one. The gameplay is awesome, the presentation is stunning, and the world feels alive in a way that the Warriors series had never captured before. I was ready to call this my game of the year, ready to say that it was hands-down the best Warriors game in twenty years.
But half the game is missing.
I played through Cao Cao's story, which I expected to be the Wei story. But no, the game just straight up ends after the Battle of Chibi. There's no Battle of Hefei. There's no Battle of Yiling. There's no Wuzhang Plains. There's no Jin. There's no Chengdu, like, seriously, the part of China with Chengdu in it is just not there. There is so much setup for no reason at all. Wu is barely a factor in the story. Liu Bei never has his crashout. We don't get to see Zhuge Liang's northern campaign on a grand scale like never before. None of it is there.
Dynasty Warriors is a series about the Three Kingdoms era, based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. And this game does not contain the Three Kingdoms. That's why, in spite of everything I love about this game, I can't possibly recommend this game to a Dynasty Warriors fan without the world's biggest asterisk.
Looks like I'll be waiting another twenty years.

DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS boldly reinvents a classic formula that has powered countless hack-and-slash battles for nearly two decades. Instead of juggling a massive roster of iconic generals, the game puts you in control of a single amnesiac warrior navigating the brutal chaos of the Three Kingdoms era. This tighter narrative focus brings fresh emotional weight to the battlefield, delivering a surprisingly personal war story.
The signature “one-versus-a-thousand” action is back and better than ever. The combat system strikes a fine balance between accessibility and depth — smooth combos, parries, and stamina management make every encounter tense and skillful. The addition of a bravery meter and special Arts keeps fights dynamic and visually spectacular. Plus, commanding your troops and triggering strategic maneuvers adds an exciting tactical layer that enriches the battlefield chaos.
Rather than a straightforward stage-by-stage campaign, Origins features an overworld map where you explore, pick your battles, build alliances, and recruit companions. Midway through, you choose sides among the legendary kingdoms—Shu, Wei, or Wu—which dramatically shifts your story and gameplay experience. This approach adds real replay value, inviting you to discover different perspectives and endings.
Graphically, the game shines with highly detailed character models, sweeping battlefields, and atmospheric lighting effects. The orchestral soundtrack pumps up the epic feel without ever overwhelming the action. Technical performance is solid, even during the most chaotic encounters, ensuring a smooth ride throughout.
Some Rough Edges:
-The game’s pacing can feel uneven, especially during early exploration segments that sometimes drag.
-Some longtime fans may miss the massive roster and co-op multiplayer modes, as Origins focuses on a singular hero journey.
-The Wanderer protagonist is deliberately a blank slate, which may feel distant or underdeveloped compared to past character-driven stories.
DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS reinvigorates the franchise with smart design choices, deeper combat, and a compelling narrative twist. While it may not satisfy those craving an all-out roster blitz or multiplayer mayhem, it offers a satisfying, skill-driven single-player experience set in one of history’s most legendary conflicts.
For fans of action games who want both spectacle and substance, Origins is a must-play that proves the Dynasty Warriors spirit is alive and well.

Missing half of the plot, which you may never get... Game ends at the Battle of Chibi and developer is NOT going to release the rest of the story as DLC. They "may" make a sequel Origin 2 if the game sales well... it feels that 90$ of only half of the original goodness... what a ripoff

Wait for sale, it's alright, but more soul's like, you need to parry ,block, and evade to be able to survive, no more just hack and slash your way thru like the good old games. I'd say for under $25 buy. Does run perfect on the steam deck fyi.

I was a big fan since Dynasty Warriors 2 and started getting tired of it after Dynasty Warriors 5.
I'm giving it a huge Thumbs Up for this new direction for the series with more story driven RPG-esque progression.
The reason I can't keep playing it is... I go in and kill things and it really is just killing the the leader and rinse and repeat...
This is going to be great for anyone he has never played a DW game, but for me who has played the older ones, its still the same thing combat wise, which is repetitive.

I played this game and really liked it. You play as a hero who fights thousands of enemies in big battles. The game looks great though, the fighting is fun, and the story changes based on what you do.
Unfortunately, you can’t play with friends, and also there aren’t many characters to choose from. Some missions feel the same, and the main hero doesn’t talk much.
But still, it’s a fun game and I really like it. I give it 8.5/10.

Its incredibly fun but sweet baby jesus the dialogue is cringier than a memory of your first fumbled kiss. Literally every single character wants to be your bestest friend in the whole world and they all think about you constantly because you nodded in their direction that one time. If you want to have a better gaming experience just button mash your way through every single scene because none of it matters and you wont miss anything. Well, you might miss having lunch with a fat downy like 20 times. Seriously I lost count of the dudes who "Feel like they have a soul connection" after having a single interaction.

I really need to preface this by saying that I wanted to put "yes and no" as my recommendation. Sadly I cannot do that.
This is probably the best Dynasty Warriors game I've ever played. The graphics, game play style, increased map size, etc... All of it is amazing. HOWEVER!!!!
I know the hardcore fans are going to be looking for all the battles they remember, and this game sadly comes up short. As in, half the game isn't there. The game ends right after the battle for Chibi, and your subsequent pursuit of Cao Cao. It feels like the game is half finished, which is sad. I hope they make a DLC for the game, which covers the other half of the campaign. Either that, or a sequel to the game. As of now though, as a hardcore franchise fan, I don't know if I can fully recommend this game.

A Dynasty Warriors game hasn't lived this rent free in my head since DW5. I really hope that we get sequels or expansive dlc to bring us all the way through the story
My only real complaint would be that the hypothetical routes don't really feel like they've had as much love put into them. But, in my highly biased opinion, I'd still give this game a 10/10. Just for making me feel like I'm back in the golden days of the series that I loved all through my childhood, and for making it feel more like you're working your way through a long drawn out period of war
They also made me care about Dian Wei, and kid me would never

If you haven't played a dynasty warriors game you will love this game.
Having played every Dynasty Warriors since 3, I felt a bit cheated at first when I could only play as one historically fictional character and only use 9 weapons. But then I started actually playing the game and realized that there was just so much more depth in the gameplay and story and characters. I realized by taking a way a little they were able to add A LOT.
For fans of the series new and old, this game is 100% worth the money, especially if you are buying it on sale.

The game delivers outstanding combat and spectacle, with dynamic battlefields and satisfying Musou attacks—arguably the best in the Dynasty Warriors series. However, it falls short in almost every other aspect. The characters lack depth, with most feeling bland or forgettable, and cutscenes are static and dull. Weapon variety is extremely limited, leading to repetitive gameplay, and the halberd outshines all others. Companion characters add little value, and while there are hints of more weapons, they’re locked to NPCs.
The story is weak and largely irrelevant, with uninspired hypothetical scenarios. Customization is minimal, additional content is shallow, and there's no co-op mode—an essential feature that's missing. The grind is tedious, and there's a noticeable lack of historical accuracy in character portrayals and narrative depth, making the setting feel less grounded than past entries.
While the game lays a solid foundation for the future of the series, it currently feels stripped-down and incomplete. At full price, it's hard to justify the cost given the limited content and features—waiting for a deep sale is highly recommended if you want it to feel worth it.

Fun game to de-stress out of work, skill ceiling is high.
Criticisms: Battle of Chibi, you need enough damage to kill the officers before being overwhelmed before the wind changes at normal difficulty, it feels more like a stat check mission even at level 45.

Gameplay very fun. Voice acting is often terrible. Disappointing that the story ends at Chibi and you don't fight directly with other kingdoms, but it's called "origins" and there are a lot of smaller battles not from previous games.

TL;DR It is probably the best in the DW series, I recommend the game to the fans.
The good: 1) very different styles with different weapons 2) the number of enemies on the screen is great, makes a truly immersive battling environment.
The bad: 1) the dialogue is cringe af. Everyone wants to be your bestie. 2) This is a personal preference but I feel like even though this game is great, but this genre has ceased to provide continuous joy to me. It started off great, but after 10 hours I just felt bored because everything plays very similar.

I've been a loyal fan of DW series and this is by far the best. The large scale battle is the best. Probably my first best, second to DW4. I'm hoping this gets a DLC soon considering the pacing of the story and to explore stories like what if you joined Yuan Shao or Lu Bu.

At time of writing I just finished my first playthrough with a faction. This is I think one of the best dynasty warrior games I've ever played, with some caveats.
Think of this game as being like Dynasty Warrior 5's Destiny mode, but that's the whole game. Your character as well as a few others are created and inserted into the world adding an additional story layer, but otherwise you are generally following the Romance of the Three Kingdom's storyline. While not perfect, I think the story telling in this game is really good and although there are holes, should be good for a newcomer to digest what is happening.
The battles are genuinely great, seeming to borrow all the best aspects from the past and visually look amazing. When you're charging into an army it feels like you are playing out one of those ridiculous cutscenes you'd see in the old games! The combat is solid, there are only 10 different types of weapons but they are from what I can tell all really well fleshed out and unique, so you will want to take time to really get to grips on how to use them which helps make up for the lack of variety.
I haven't done all the battles yet of course, but generally the big stages have been really fun, fighting armies is a big part of the game and is a challenge, though as I leveled up more and got better it has definitely got easier.
Last thing to mention, unlike older games as this is much more story focused, you have an overworld where you interact with locations and officers too around the world. If you enjoy story driven games you should enjoy this, and the reason I've spent so long to do my first playthrough is because I've taken my time enjoying this aspect of the game. If you don't like this though, know that there is postgame content which I've yet to explore, but as I understand it there's plenty to do here still.
So... definitely recommend. Game has a steep price but if this is something you'll like you should get your moneys worth no problem. I expect I'll be playing for many more hours to come yet...

Awesome story line, I've played majority of Dynasty games. This one so far no major complaints, Lu Bu is still an animal, Dong Zhou is still out of shape. Im only at chapter 3, I hope Im able to play all the other characters at some point, that will be the only thing so far i will miss.

though i'm not a fan of the inclusion of wanderer (your character), the core gameplay and battles does feel like a return to dw3-5. it is regretful that a lot of the cast and even story was cut short, but the weapons you can use are quite fun. difficulty was great too

After the poorly received game that was Dynasty Warrior 9, KOEI TECMO GAMES came back swinging with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a spin off to the mainline games. If you played Dynasty Warriors before, you already know what the story and setting is going to be, heavily based off the popular Chinese epics Romance of the Three Kingdom. Except instead of just simply retelling the beginning of the Three Kingdom again (The game still do, don't worry), this game have you played as an original character who acts as a mystic peacekeeper, unnamed in the books, but heavily influential in both battle prowess and shaping the course of history.
The story is basically a fan fiction, as if someone created their own OC and self inserted to be all cool and badass during the era of the Han dynasty feudal wars. You play as Ziluan, a protagonist with amnesia. You don't remember where or why, but you quickly get acquainted with Guan Yu as the two of you try to protect some harmless villagers from the abusive guards, which will soon lead to the rise of the yellow turbans and eventually the war of the three kingdoms. You slay through thousands and thousand of people throughout the story because despite your amnesia, you're pretty good at remembering how to take out small armies with a single swing of a sword. Throughout the game, you will come to meet a bunch of familiar faces from the story, and they are all insanely horny for you for whatever reason, even those that will eventually have canonical relationship with other characters. As I said, this game is really written like a fan fiction from Tumblr but not offensively bad. The moment to moment writing of characters are great, characters like Zhang Jiao went from a joke character in previous game to having a massive glow up in both writing and design. Aside from being needlessly horny towards you (And this applies to both the men and women), each character have their own charming personality and stories. The game ends before the actual war even begun but the content we did get was good enough and sets up nicely for sequels of this spin off. The MC, Ziluan's story is kinda generic and is probably the least interesting part of the game. But playing as Ziluan is pretty damn fun.
Unlike the mainland series, Origins only let you play as Ziluan and you can't switch characters, with the exception of a new system that let you swap place with your partner once you build up the meter bar (Such as teaming up with Guan Yu or other characters during battles). However, what this game lack in character roster more than makes up for it with how satisfying the gameplay is, and how you can switch between 10 different weapons, all with an expansive combo system, unlockable skills, and different abilities you can equip to them. Not only that, but each weapon have a widely different playstyle, with your safe generic longsword with easy to remember combos to throwing charkams where you have to time a button press once they return to you to execute an enpowered attack, spear that lets you soak up damage and return the damage back to the enemies, and so forth. Battles take place in giant battlefields and you can even command your own squad that can perform abilities like raining arrow on a spot or charging into a crowd. There is even a dueling system now where you can challenge commanders on the field to a one on one, and the one that loses causes their side to lose morale which will weaken their max hp drastically. You even have a Musou gauge which can let you take out nearly a thousand enemy at a time with a single press of a button, and it is always satisfying. Unfortunately, the animation for this game's musou attack is underwhelming compared to the other dynasty warrior games. To make up for it, all the crazy animation and attacks come in the form of battle arts, which are abilities you can unlock and equip to certain weapons like the ability shatter the ground, shoot a dragon out your spear, or rend the floor on fire with your blade. Every weapon have their own list of abilities you can unlock and equip. And honestly, the most important part of a Musou game is how fun the action is and I can positively say, this game excels on the intense dopamine hitting action combat.
Graphically the game is alright, its pretty in certain areas and the character models are pretty detailed. Everyone is hot so there will be eye candy anywhere you look. The game also runs insanely well, which is crazy because at any time during a battle you will have thousand of NPCs alongside generals and important NPCs duking it out and dying en masses, yet the performance will never take a hit. Its actually crazy how in a time where we get bad performance games on PC all the time, Dynasty Warrior Origin is the one to come here and have a perfectly optimized game. The only downside graphically is the environment is very bland and isn't all that detailed. It makes sense considering how vast the battlefield is and how much is going on at any given time so the environment is simply just meant to be a set piece, but it would have been nice to see more detailed buildings or more things on the battlefield other than your occasional dip in the floor or random boulder.
As with any Dynasty Warrior game, it is not complete without the totally out of place heavy rock and metal soundtrack blasting in your ear as you mow down soldiers like the wuxia god you are. The voice acting, at least in Japanese and Chinese are fantastic, the English voice acting is expectedly cheesy but that also adds to the charm of this game. During battle, you constantly hear the clash of weapons and the sound of countless soldiers shouting and its absolutely great.
The weakest part of the game is the customization of Ziluan (Which is almost non existent aside from being able to choose 3 outfits) and the relationship building of the game. By doing quests, you can build levels to almost every name character in the game, and you will unlock cutscenes where Ziluan and the character bond. Every single one of them usually end with the other character being extremely down bad for Ziluan and even suggestive endings for some of them, EVEN Lu Bu. Its funny but it all amounts to nothing as majority of these characters will canonically get with each other later down the storyline and the only benefit of this is that with certain characters you will unlock a new skill.
There are other things I can nippick about Origins but despite some minor nags I may have, Dynasty Warrior Origins is a great action game, a highly recommend and a must play for all fans of action games. This is the only series where you can simply sit back and relax and watch as your character casually take down armies after armies. There are few games in the AAA scene that lets you enjoy such a power fantasy these days, and Origins does more than fill the itch. This game is the embodiment of fuck yeah and I hope KOEI takes what works with Origins and use it in the mainline games moving forward.

This feels like the ideal structure for a Warriors game. Separate, handmade battle maps connected by a world map you can move around on. It keeps the strength of the old DW campaigns, but with a more complete setting. Feels like a JRPG with battles instead of encounters, though much more linear. More randomized, small battles would've improved it even more, similar to what we got in Samurai Warriors 4's chronicle mode. There are repeatable skirmishes, but not much in the way of randomization. It would also be nice to have some town scenes to explore, but maybe that's asking too much.
The battle maps themselves look great. There's a real sense of scale, and more of the bombastic style I'd associate with DW8, rather than 9's more mundane environments. Combat is much, much better than 9, as well. The music is fine, but the battle themes didn't do much for me compared to the earlier games.
The reduced character roster is unfortunate, but kind of understandable given the high fidelity and more detailed look at the first half of the story. The game's main problem is the set player-character. Not being able to choose a regular hero kind of sucks. Character customization would've made up for it, but there isn't any. They also made the choice to not give the protagonist a voice or any interesting dialogue, so it's kind of the worst of both worlds. While his backstory is fine, he has no personality and isn't customizable enough to be a good stand-in for the player. Nothing interesting to say, and no body language aside from nodding solemnly at the end of every conversation. He makes any scene involving the regular characters feel more awkward than it should. Dude feels like a fashion model's ghost, pale enough for a corpse, standing around looking creepy and handsome, with none of the vitality of the characters around him.
On top of that, the bond events and general patronizing tone of the writing make it seem like every character in China is in love with the protagonist. It makes sense for the story in one or two cases, but when it's every character you meet, it just feels more and more awkward as the game goes on.
Honestly, if I could just delete the PC and play as a regular hero, this might be a contender for my favorite game in the series. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll continue the larger story, and give us either character selection or customization in the next entry.

The first Musou game I ever played was Hyrule Warriors and I absolutely loved it. I found this game when I was looking for games like Hyrule Warriors. Low and behold I came across the series of games that inspired Hyrule Warriors gameplay mechanics.
Origins was the first Dynasty Warriors game I played and it was incredible. The combat and gameplay mechanics were amazing and so were the visuals. I particularly love the way the camera is positioned and moves when you join an army in a ambush or charge. I also enjoyed the hell out of each stories and loved the characters.
My only complaint is that after I finished the game I bought and played Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends. I noticed that there were a lot of battles and characters missing in Origins. I hope that if Origins does get a DLC it is a full blown expansion which adds in the battles and characters, while also adding in new or returning weapons.
Overall, Dynasty Warriors: Origins gets a 10/10 from me.

It's a very bold new direction for the Dynasty Warriors series. Koei screwed up DW9 by making it too different from the rest of the series but DWO strikes a very good balance. The story has me invested and the battles are the biggest the series has seen.
My only gripe is that DWO mostly covers the prelude to the Three Kingdoms Era and barely of the actual Three Kingdoms stuff. Knowing Koei's track record, I'm worried that we're going to have to wait for a sequel before all the classic setpieces get covered, since a Musou game getting a major story expansion is practically unheard of.

I've been an unashamed fan of the Dynasty Warriors since the second game came with my launch PS2. I just love the 1 vs 1000 gameplay, I dig the historical setting, I've always been a fan of the over-the-top cheesiness, and despite the fact that they haven't really changed the formula very much since they created it, I love the formula.
This game, however, is a bit of a departure from the regular formula. I'd consider all of the following to be a little iffy:
First off, there's a much deeper focus on the actual story, which is a little odd. The story of Dynasty Warriors is based off a novel which is based off of an actual period in history, but to be frank it's never really been the focus of the game. For some reason, they really decided to drill down on the story, to the point that this game only features about half of the actual story of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, stopping before you really get to the actual "romance" of the three kingdoms. It's really weird that the game just sort of drops off before the big three (Wei, Wu, and Shu) actually fight.
Second, you don't play as one of the historical characters, and instead of a silent protagonist from some weird nonsensical and non-existent faction, and for whatever reason, every character in the world is apparently in love with you. This completely new faction just sort of feels like a weird and unneeded new thing to do.
Third, there's a whole open world map that you wander around, and a bunch of side quests and story cutscenes to unlock. At times, it feels like a weird RPG of sorts.
All of that being said, the core Dynasty Warriors 1 vs 1000 gameplay in this is actually really solid and awesome, and unarguably is the best version of the core gameplay. It feels so good to play and the huge battles are fantastic to get lost in. It's just a little unfortunate that there just aren't as many battles as the older games and the battles are punctuated by an hour of weird RPG sidequests in between.
It's still a fun game, and I think the re-imagining has been an interesting idea, and the core rethinking of the combat is awesome. I just wish they'd drop the whole Guardians of Peace thing, drop the weird generic character you play as, and return a bit to the original structure of the games from 2 - 8. Give me free battles, let me play on different sides of the battles, and hell, actually get to the whole Wei vs Wu vs Shu part of the story.
Still a good time. Still very enjoyable. Definitely looking forward to the next games.

TLDR; Highly recommended
Probably the best combat gameplay in the DW series up to this game release.
In my playthrough, game is free of bug and run smoothly.
==========================
Koei Tecmo games had learn lots after making Fate:Samurai Remnant
Origins adopt the story structure of Fate (single MC) and also the combat, then tailor it to fit DW gameplay.
Storywise, my nitpick is with the illusion of choices and that the story is linear.
Wish they could expand more on the story option.
The story delivery itself is well executed for the 3 available faction.
It could be far better if MC is not mute and the choices are real.
Combat, is the highlight of DW origins.
There is only 1 character, but each weapon type comes with their own distinguishable style. Equivalent of 10 characters in old DW.
Game still carry the time rush feeling of the old DW.
Troop morale now carry a significant impact for the gameplay.
Player's every move and action of the player's matter in combat and it's no longer button mashing of the old DW.
While it is still possible to rush and solo a large troop, it is not easy and carry it's own risk and challenges.
Large troop combat and it's reversal are always epic moments.
Personal Guard are expanded with Tactics that can change the flow of combat, whether it be decimating foes or saving allies or delaying ambush.
Companion (Historical characters) is direct adoption of the servant system from Fate:SR, it's however unfortunate that they have the same moveset as the player.
Other Minor Negative:
-Only 2 slot for inventory, there's not much variety that can be done here. Shame, some of the accessory is interesting but will never see uses.
-Steep endgame grind (Optional content); as to complete the challenges (and ultimate weapon challenges) pretty much require players to grind their weapons. Using unupgraded tier 7 weapon, it's simply impossible with the DPS check.
-Orb system, in the endgame there is only 1 orb worth to use, which is Vortex, and skill builds should revolve around it for those attempting the optional endgame.
-DW Origins is probably treated as sub-series of DW, it's combat and gameplay is not the same as the older DW. Personally it's a good thing, but I can imagine some that love the old series may not like it.

Quality wise. it's a upgrade over other dynasty warrior game and a somehow fresh take on the existing formula. Combat as a lot more depth and flow, storytelling is richer. The tradeoff is qty, with only a single officer being playable (there is diversity as you can switch weapons) and the story ending at the start of the 3 kingdoms era rather than at the end. You can still get plenty of hour in, I'm at 70h and still have part of the game to explore as well as trying to master higher difficulty. Highly reccomand, the combat improvement by itself is worth it.

Good game, but the hypothetical scenarios are so underwhelming. We just get a small cutscene and that's pretty much it. They should have added additional battles like they did in Dynasty warriors 8 for the hypothetical scenarios, but overall still an amazing game.

At first I was hesitant to buy this game because of the series' less-than-flattering reputation as a repetitive button masher. However, now it's one of my best game purchases of 2025. The action remains satisfying even after 100+ hours thanks to multiple weapons and the stages playing out in some very different ways depending on how you act. Getting every trophy was bittersweet; I almost didn't want to let it go.
The story is a surprisingly decent introduction to the first half of the history of the Three Kingdoms. I wish some parts were developed/presented better (e.g. it was weird to see Xiahou Dun suddenly appear with an eyepatch and handwave it with a line saying he lost his eye in the battle, it feels like an event major enough to deserve its own in-battle cutscene). Fingers crossed for a sequel.
The bond dialogues are cringey but hilarious. It would've been extremely streotypical and boring to only have the women throw themselves at Ziluan, but no, it goes above and beyond by having every man lay it on thick. Cao Cao True Ending route Guo Jia is the best husband. 10/10.

This game cured my real life depression. For real, I was lamenting the human condition (of me, I'm the human) my therapist said "Dude, you ever try pretending that you're a warrior in Ancient China battling the moral quandary of might makes right, in a land suffering under the rule of a cabal of evil eunuchs?" I'm 10 hours in and I feel great. Flushed my meds and everything. 10/10

Fun game with solid fighting action. Dialogues seem a bit cringe and weird. Reminds me of conversations body builders would have in the gym fawning over each other's muscles. There is solid action and fun to be had though.

if DW9 was even half as good as this, we wouldn't be in this warriors recession era but we're finally free now cuz this game is amazing
i don't want to call this the "best dynasty warriors game ever" because well it IS but it's also so much more than just a regular Dynasty Warriors game so it would be unfair to compare it to the other games like that

Finally, after Dynasty Warriors 8, this has become another one of my favorite Dynasty Warriors games, even though it's just a spinoff.
The new gameplay and mechanics are something that should definitely be implemented in the next installment.
I also love the graphics and attention to detail.
I can’t wait for Dynasty Warriors 10 with this kind of gameplay and features. I really hope they never reduce the number of playable characters from the previous entries.

The largest positive step forward this series has taken in a long time. Its the best and most in depth the combat has ever been even if the weapon variety and story depth weren't as extensive as previous titles. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone but especially to those who have enjoyed other Warriors titles and haven't yet played a Dynasty Warriors game. While getting all the achievements was a bit of a grind I never stopped having fun.
I've never been more excited for the future of this series.

I absolutely love this game. I used to play Dynasty Warriors on PlayStation 2 years ago, and Dynasty Warriors: Origins feels like a fantastic return to that classic experience. The combat is still as satisfying as ever, with tons of enemies on screen and over-the-top action. It brings back a lot of nostalgia while adding new features and polish that make it feel fresh. If you enjoyed the older games in the series, you’ll probably have a great time with this one too.

Hey devs and fellow players,
Really enjoying Dynasty Warriors: Origins — love the combat and the return to classic-style gameplay.
One thing I think would improve the experience: after beating the story, there's no easy way to access Story Mode or replay chapters unless you load your save and dig through menus.
Could we please get a Story/Chapter Select option directly from the main menu in a future patch? It’d also be awesome if we could start at different points or choose unlocked characters more freely. Would make replaying the story much smoother and more fun.
Anyone else agree?

TLDR: Origins is a strong step in the right direction for the future of the entire franchise. Game gud. Story gud. Lots of Waifus
Story:
If you're a longtime Musou enjoyer like I am and someone who grew up with the series; you’ll appreciate how Origins finally nails the historical and narrative flow very well that was missing from previous entries.
For example: How did Guan Yu end up with the Red Hare? Why is Cao Cao clashing with Liu Bei?
This game does a fantastic job of answering those questions, giving more weight to character motivations and political intrigue.
The improved facial animations and solid voice acting only help elevate the storytelling.
Gameplay:
I think the combat has been steadily improving and polished throughout the years, and Origins just glazed it further. I quite enjoyed mastering the different weapons available and appreciate that there are still easter eggs and hidden objectives scattered throughout the game.
The way they did New Game + should be an industry standard. Quite disappointed we couldn't make our own character but at the same time, the story carries enough for it to be accepted and enjoyable.

The Measure of a good Musou requires, in my mind, these major points.
1 - Good Gameplay; Usually this means smooth interaction, fast but not frenetic, definitely not slow outside of maybe a few characters/weapon/move-sets, consistent and understandable, and all of the rewards and options are all in service to the rest of the gameplay in an enjoyable loop.
2 - Stable System; By that I mean low glitches, well crafted and maintained with few bugs, and clealry listening to the playerbase and implementing both fixes and adjustments to the gameplay if it is causing issues with Gameplay or story enjoyment.
3 - Fun Story; While not all games will have a GOOD story, they should always at least have a fun story that you want to stay engaged in.
4 - Good Production value; Visuals, Soundtrack, Voice-acting, movement, artwork, all of these should be a major contributor to the game.
5 - Good enjoyable Game Systems; Every Musou has a gameplay loop, and many of them have had great ways to keep you playing for over 120+ hours. These should be present in some way.
6 - Something unique; to set it apart in some way, whether that be tied to characters, stories, mechanics, whatever.
With the above said, I'll put them on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 is lowest rating, 10 is highest.
1 - Good Gameplay; 8/10, there are some minor gripes I have regarding some of the hit mechanics in some very specific spots, some of the behavior (such as scaled difficulty dramatically affecting gameplay and item choices) is not ideal. With those negatives....this is the most engaging gameplay I have had out of a KOEI TECMO Musou, and I've played since Dynasty Warriors 2. I REALLY hope they incorporate the Blocking, Battle Arts, Duels, Dodging, Guard, and Character Companion mechanics into the other titles. I'm torn on Wushu (the little shields above peoples heads) but I do like that it's an achievable way to stun opponents no matter what weapon-style you are using. Also while lacking additional characters to choose from.....I didn't mind only having a single character because we could switchover to the other weapon/moveset styles. I just wish I could've made my own character. Their late-game challenges are HARD and I think they should've had 3 sets of challenges at the higher levels to encourage people to climb and challenge when they were at an expected skill level and I say this because the ultimate Musou Challenges suck the fun out of the game (The Difficulty levels and how they effect the entire gameplay is troublesome in this way....but Historian and Wayfinder levels do not experience this.)
2 - Stable System; 9/10 I only ever had one issue and it was Day 1 and they patched it by the next day and it was unrelated to the game itself (was tied to graphics card), Very little stutter if any, almost no issues noticed with tons of dudes on the screen and you can manage the items that would affect that. Damn it's solid. Really hope they just improve upon this engine cause they have a banger.
3 - Fun Story; 10/10 It's a Dynasty Warriors set in the time in lead-up to the Three Kingdoms era. You knew what we were getting into. But they added a heck of a lot to it and wove a very compelling and interesting story and put a lot of effort into making it FEEL impactful and important and outstanding. They knocked this one out of the park in so many ways.
4 - Good Production value; 9/10 Pretty much across the board stellar. Few small points not worth discussing.
5 - Good enjoyable Game Systems; 7/10 I do think they hit pretty much everything they needed to, except my complaints tied to the DIfficulty level scaling, the Challenges, and other than playing through all three Kingdoms and the True Endings for each (and challenges), there's nothing else to keep you coming back except for the thrill of playing a Musou...so if this was a main-line title I'd rate this ALOT lower, but as an experimental title this did what it needed to, I just really wish there was more.
6 - Something unique; Had Several! Really High quality storytelling, compelling Amnesiac Narrative, Workable and enjoyable world map movement that felt like you could progress at your own pace (I enjoy DW 9's world map and engagement, but I recognize that I am a minoring there. So I will clarify THIS IS NOT THAT). Being able to go back and also disengage and go complete minor missions on the side and still contribute to something (Peace mechanics in each province) was a good way to ensure feeling progression consistently. Good and compelling ancillary characters.
The level up system was fine, the way the horse leveled up is okay, the weapon upgrade system was passable...just wish the good parts of it were available before beating the game.
Overall for anyone who loves musou and KOEI TECMO's work, will Love this game. If you enjoyed Dynasty Warriors Up through 5 and found 6 - 8 (or even 9) each bringing something interesting to the table, this will fit right in for you.
Man I wish this had multiplayer.

The game is crashing 100% after a main story cut scene at the end of the Chapter 1. Literally can not progress the game. I had a great time playing while I could so it's a real shame. I know the flood of positive reviews was a big reason for my buy, I wasn't expecting such massive crash issues.
EDIT: For what it's worth somehow it stopped crashing and I'm playing again.

It’s so rewarding to see a franchise like this evolve and adapt without losing its essence.
Dynasty Warriors may be a simple game, but it’s incredibly fun.
Everything new in this latest version is not only welcome, but genuinely enjoyable.
