Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Just your friendly neighborhood Himejoshi lesbian here, reporting for duty! Sometimes in life you come across a yuri VN that's just so PEAK it makes you laugh, cry, and everything in between. This is definitely one of them. This is one of the top 3 yuri VNs I would recommend to someone new to the genre... or just... in general. The MC was relatable, the characters all have such unique personalities, and the relationships in the game develop in a way that truly makes you feel like you're at the school with them. Even if you don't initially like a character, I can almost guarantee you'll at least be able to understand them better by the end of the VN. I'll be honest, a lot of yuri media acknowledges either the loving OR the sexual aspect of a lesbian relationship, but not both. I am pleasantly surprised when yuri accomplishes what Kindred Spirits did- a great mix of loving and sexual aspects in the depicted relationships. I also appreciate when long term couples are shown in the genre such as Sachi and Megumi. The fact that they were trying to figure out how they can consummate their relationship before passing on as spirits was a comical but endearing premise. I was late to the game on this VN, but I absolutely rate it in my top 3 Yuri VNs of all time. I enjoyed the art, music, story line, characters, literally everything. I don't have anything bad to say about it. Maybe other than I'm mad I can't go back in time to reread it for the first time again. 5/5 stars.

Kindred Spirits on the Roof is a softcore 18+ yuri story that is incredibly sweet, cute, and full of nice moments. It does end on a weird note though with all the extra vignettes that open up after the initial story, which I feel like they sort of dragged the ending and the rest of the stories down a bit, but a few were cute. There were a few technical issues on my side, but nothing that was gamebreaking, just annoying. Story is pretty straightforward, but has one of the funnier setups for the plot that I've dealt with, "We want to see girls fuck so that when we fuck for the first time we do it right". That just tickled me so much, and I even proceeded to forget about it after reading for a few hours because the story of basically being "yuri cupid" was cute and not horny at all. There's not even any H-scenes in the VN until you're pretty far in. I believe all the couples only had 1 H-scene for each of them as well, none of which did I find particularly hot, but were sweet moreso than anything else. After you complete the main story a bunch of short vignette extras pop up, which is a really nice touch, but them only showing up after the main story is complete was a bit weird since chronologically they happen in the middle of the story itself. If these were after stories I would've appreciated it better, but only one or two of them added information that was after the last story bit of a couple previously, the rest just adding background information in the middle, so it was a bit of an odd way to close out the visual novel. The BGM and vocal songs in this are pretty great. "A. A. Ai!" as an insert song is so sweet and has story significance, but I wish MangaGamer had put its lyrics on screen somehow while it was playing. If you don't understand Japanese well enough, even going back and looking at the lyrics later can take some of the oomph out of a scene like that. On the technical side, this runs in Ren'py, so there's usually no issues, but I kept having hangups on new lines where it'd show one letter then take a few seconds to continue the line. Probably not a major issue for most people, but at the speed I read lines it was a bit jarring. Overall, I'd recommend Kindred Spirits on the Roof to anyone who likes sweet yuri stories who isn't particularly in it for the 18+ since it is softcore and not super prevalent here.
