The narrative-driven approach keeps players invested in Tianding’s journey, which is filled with moments of humor, heroism, and cultural storytelling. The game’s pacing is well-managed, ensuring that players remain engaged without feeling overwhelmed by difficulty or bogged down by monotonous tasks. One of the game’s standout features is its strong emphasis on cultural storytelling. The Legend of Tianding draws heavily from Chinese folklore, presenting stories of heroism, justice, and community through its missions and character interactions. This cultural richness adds depth and authenticity to the game, making it more than just a simple action title. I was hoping for a Viewtiful Joe type thing, but it is not. You run around a Japanese occupied Taiwan (with questionable depictions of the Japanese), talking to poorly translated NPCs, slowly revealing a pretty boring and obvious story. After nearly TWO HOURS, I had one combat level in the sewers and a boss. I'm sorry guys, the story doesn't carry this game. You need to have combat, and make it interesting. I love the classic art style, but wow was this one boring. Also felt like I was playing some kind of interactive propaganda. I wouldn't even pay $5 for this one.

Great gameplay that mixes platforming with a 2D beat 'em up, and great aesthetics that are used to tell an exciting story which feels familiar, even classic, but not boring or rehashed!

I really liked the comic-book style cutscenes, along with the 'theater' narrator at the beginning of chapters. It went well with the Taiwan early 1900s aesthetic and colour palette. The city feels atmospheric and manages to be immersive in its 2D presentation. The game is short and manages to keep things tight, not much felt wasted or filler. The combat is fun and can feel rewarding, pay attention to it and it will reward you. You can kick bullets! Some of the boss fights were tough but after a few tries were manageable. The music goes well with the atmosphere and fights, and was overall enjoyable, even the one that plays at the credits.
