Scorn is an experience, a good and very unique one at that! For me, reviewing Scorn means I should describe and rate its 5 main aspects, which, in my opinion, are the following: Worldbuilding & atmosphere At the forefront of the Scorn experience is its worldbuilding and atmosphere. The world of Scorn has been deliberately and meticulously crafted to be a layered, biomechanical spectacle. While the surface layer is a vast, barren landscape consisting of little more than an eerily empty desert shrouded in the foggy whispers of death; the sparringly placed (or perhaps simply the few remaining) structures speak tales of a once great civilisation of intelligent humans or humanoid creatures that has abandoned this place long ago. For reasons one can only speculate. Inside these structures we find elaborate, carefully crafted interiors of mechanical excellence, covered in organic tissue that lives and breathes. Inspired by life and the natural order—birth, death, and rebirth—it is exceptionally fitting that these ancient structures now lie in decay while fleshy, cancerous growths and twisted, hostile lifeforms have overtaken the vast halls and countless chambers once called home by the much more civilised race that originally designed and built it. With this combination of pristine Alien-looking architecture layered with organic but unwelcoming life thriving in its own way within the remnants of a long-forgotten history, Scorn has managed to make each corner of the world incite a very primal feeling of terror, fear, and a general feeling of unease. Never quite sure what new horror lies around the corner, and yet the only way forward is to push through. Level design As one might expect, the worldbuilding directly translates into the level design. Each major area in the world of Scorn feels like one giant organism of interconnected pathways in a labyrinth-like structure. The great level of detail put into every sinister crevice of the world makes for a great exploration experience. Something I really loved is that on top of this, Scorn does not hold your hand along the way. It is entirely possible to get lost or even miss important areas, though fortunately never in a way that you get stuck later on. This intentional lack of guidance deepens the feeling of being alone in an unforgiving world where nobody is on your side and the only way to survive is to be deliberate and smart with everything you do. Soundtrack & ambient sounds Everything mentioned above is compounded by the sound design. The OST—music consisting largely of droning notes and atmospheric background noise with thumping, metallic groans, ritualistic chanting, and more mixed in at the right moments—adds to the dark and unsettling aesthetic of the world around you. Sometimes even the absence of music stirs the feelings of despair and loneliness you'll find yourself become familiar with as you progress through the path laid out before you. Add the ambient sounds and background noise of this frightening and dangerous realm, and you got yourself a soundscape that grips you tight and deepens your immersion into the world. You never know for sure if the sound you just heard is an active threat, or just an ambient noise of the eroding realm being slowly consumed by a fleshy, organic evil. Gameplay Something that struck me by surprise is that Scorn is, at its core, a puzzle game (a genre I love). The physical puzzles aren't too complicated most of the time, but there is a second type of puzzle element: safely traversing the labyrinths. Enemies might crawl in and out of the organic material on the floor and walls, ammo and health is somewhat sparce, blocked pathways have to be cleared, unlockables are sometimes hidden, etc. It all makes for a solid mix of exploration, problem-solving, problem-avoiding, resource management, and occassional combat. Worth noting is that while as a gamer I'd say the combat and some of the puzzle mechanics feel a bit clunky, as a puzzle and storytelling enthusiast I feel that the way these things are handled makes perfect sense given the biology of who we play as, their state of mind, and the unfamiliar biomechanical nature of every tool or weapon available. It increases the immersion and sense of urgency/danger. Storytelling Thankfully there are no quests, marked objectives, dialogue, or other such traditional aspects of a videogame storytelling. However, the storyline is absolutely there if you pay attention to the environment and its inhabitants, the recurring symbolism in all its many forms, and use your imagination to fill in the (intentional) gaps. It's a worthwhile storyline as well, I might add! In conclusion • Worldbuilding & atmosphere: rich and beautiful in a hauntingly disgusting way; 11/10 • Level design: perfectly matches the worldbuilding and serves the game's purposes well; 9/10 • Soundtrack & ambient sounds: deeply unsettling, dark, atmospheric; 10/10 • Gameplay: good mix of elements, could be smoother but it adds to the experience; 8/10 • Storytelling: environmental, nuanced but very intentional, minimalistic but profound; 9/10 Overal: 100% recommended to experience Scorn for yourself!

Beautiful Nightmare — But Not in a Good Way Scorn is one of the most visually striking games I’ve ever played. The grotesque, biomechanical world is genuinely unsettling in all the right ways—its art direction and atmosphere are top-tier. But sadly, that's where the praise ends for me. The actual gameplay is slow, tedious, and frustrating. At its core, this is a puzzle/maze-solving game with occasional combat—and neither of those elements feel particularly satisfying. Combat is especially weak. It’s clunky, slow, and unresponsive. Every encounter feels more like an interruption than a challenge, and the weapon design (while fitting the aesthetic) doesn’t help much in terms of gameplay feel. Puzzles aren’t necessarily hard, but they’re often obscure or involve excessive backtracking. The game doesn’t guide you or even give you a sense of direction—it just drops you in and lets you wander, often aimlessly, hoping you stumble onto the solution. What makes it harder to stay invested is the lack of any clear story. You move through grotesque halls and solve environmental puzzles, but without context or motivation. There are no words, no logs, no lore to uncover—just atmosphere and confusion. I wanted to like this game. I really did. The art direction had me excited from the start. But playing it has been a chore. I find myself forcing each session just to get through it—and that’s never a good sign. It’s not that the game is “hard.” It’s that it feels hollow and frustrating. And for a game that’s also quite short, the current price tag doesn’t feel justified. If you enjoy slow, abstract puzzle games with minimal guidance and maximum atmosphere, this might be for you. But for me, Scorn has been a painfully beautiful disappointment.

This is nuts. I think this is clearly not for everyone... I saw it as a kind of modern first-person transposition of the weird, outlandish late 80s/early 90s point-and-click adventure games taking place in utterly alien and bizarre worlds. But there's also a slight "shooter" (TERM USED VERY LOOSELY) side to it. Beyond that, it's... as you'd expect from this description above... a lot of running around, trying to avoid enemies, and occasionally solving puzzles. I'm not gonna lie, a significant portion of it was more frustrating than interesting. Especially when you get effectively stuck with one hit point but you've got to make a lot more progress towards the next invisible checkpoint. I saw that lots of people describe the combat as "clunky" and janky... but it's not as bad as I thought it'd end up being after taking a short peek at other players' opinions. It's not great... but also not that bad...? There's a ton of interesting environmental and visual storytelling taking place, especially in the last chapter. The last half-hour of the game is insane and had me pick my jaw up from the floor. The world and its story just have me yearning for more. I would love to see the developers have another go at it. Now, do I think it's worth the launch price of 40€? I backed the game on Kickstarter several years ago, so I got to experience it for a mere 13€. I feel like I got WAY more than my money's worth. But I can see how Scorn would be a hard sell to some people at the full price. If you really love H.R. Giger, bizarre alien worlds, absolutely gorgeous 3D artwork, and don't mind the game being a bit more frustrating than it should... I think you should go for it.

Visually it's a stunning game. The art style is so unique and grotesque, truly something I've never seen before. The combat is alright. Nothing really to write home about. Also, the game is extremely short, only taking me around 4.5 hours to complete a playthrough. I would highly recommend picking this up at a heavy discount~

Can be confusing for those without sense of direction, but its all part of the game. Don't give up at the beginning, but instead try to take the time to learn and solve the puzzles. Overall great game with ominous ending and stunning visuals.

Aside from the combat and resources being too limited, the game is really good. The Gruesome aesthetic and atmosphere was really nice, would recommend when it is on sale, but not full price

The atmosphere and late game visual design is so good, but the experience is such a slog that it's hard to say it's worth it. Map aesthetics are a little hit and miss, with everything looking great, but throughout the short runtime each chapter takes up, they overstay their welcome. It makes the maps obnoxious to navigate. Not in a "surreal and disorienting" way, but because of dull repetition. Geiger's work is grotesque and erotic. That's like, the whole deal. The game captures of of this in the last act, but most of the game is just the bio-mech gore. It's not bad so much as a lost opportunity. The design gripes don't make the game unplayable though, it's pretty nice to walk around. Until you get interrupted by the puzzles or combat. The puzzles are dull. The game launches with an obnoxious sliding block puzzle. There's the "rotate one piece and adjacent pieces rotate" flavor puzzle. Probably some others that I already forgot about minutes after finishing the game. It's boring. It's not thematic. It's a sliding block puzzle except it's eggs. The combat isn't any better. There's less than a dozen encoutners, and they revolve around slapping whatever you want to fight twice, and then turning a corner. The guns are a generic pistol and shotgun type weapon, which work fine, but you could remove all of the combat and have a sub-par puzzle game. Then you could remove the puzzles and have a pretty interesting walking sim. The ending is really cool. Might even be worth going through the other 4 acts.... but also maybe not worth the time.

Quite a unique experience in itself, that is worth trying if you're not bothered by the gore and stuff. But very low numbers of hours you can put into this game, kind of a shame in my opinion.

Real Good More of a puzzle walking sim with some survival horror elements on the side but if anything about walking through a wacky alien meat factory sounds interesting Id highly recommend you pick it up. Atmosphere is spot on, Art style is phenomenal, and if you want to see how a bunch of alien meat tech works this game is super unique. Honestly wish it was a bit longer if anything.

This game has always had mixed opinions. I think if you can realize what the game is trying to tell you, or the message it tries to tell will find it enjoyable. But on the other hand I do understand why some people find Scorn disappointing. I personally really enjoyed it but it's definitely isn't for everyone

SCRON gets "two snaps in a circle" If MYST had a baby with Doom and then raised by Dead Space... SCORN is perfect for any type of Game-&-Chill scenarios. Can be played on PC or Steam Deck while watching NBA, MLB, or w/e you can watch with one eye on each screen. It is similar to Agony or Necrophosis if you liked either, this is a perfect game for you. FACTS: - Puzzles are NOT too difficult but what puts them on the high-medium level is due to the fact that there are NO hints or game assistance... you are dropped in the deep end and expected to walk around figuring things out through trial and error. - The art direction is dope - clearly influenced by Giger and a great choice of inspiration. - Combat requires A LOT of patients due to not getting a real weapon until the 3rd Act. You are given a tool that can do damage but requires regen to fire with only two shots charged at a time. - Weapons have VERY LIMITED ammo. conservation and making every shot count is key - reminds me a lot of Resident Evil and Dead Space. anyway, the game has been around for a few years and was a surprisingly pleasant find.

no spoilers: woah. where to even begin. captivating, horrifying, intriguing, eery, atmospheric, scary, unique, and so much more. the puzzles are puzzling but not infuriating, the story told throughout the environment kept me playing for hours on end until I completed the game in which I was just as confused as when I began but with new questions and a new perspective. the combat is clunky and absolutely terrible I wish they just put more work into the environment but then that wouldn't make too much sense for the lore so.. eh.. I kinda get it but the combat needs some serious rework. despite that however.. the game is POLISHED crazy degree of polished that's thoroughly enjoyable to play through to observe and navigate this never endingly confusing and captivating environment. absolutely worth a try.. when the game is on sale that is. it wouldn't take anyone more than 10 hours to complete in my opinion but the developers clearly put a LLOOTT of time into this game and it shows for every minute of gameplay... except the cobat jesus christ I hate the combat so much but with the combat aside the game is thoroughly worth it for those who enjoy a good puzzle horror mystery thriller like myself. it's close to a masterpiece imo it's just.. the combat aagghh gods I can not get over the shitty combat but the art and the MUSIC omg the music is so so so good it flows seemlessly and perfectly with the sound design as you traverse environments and rooms alike. the sound design is amazing it's as good as the captivating environment. try this game out trust me it's a HELL of a trip worth taking. try it! buy it!

Truly worth the wait ever since the announcement. stunning visuals, great combat, and entertaining puzzles. I love how not a single word was needed to be said to tell the story, and I love how vivid and obscure it was. absolutely loved every second of this game and it will forever be among my favorites. I really hope for a sequel at some point. If you're thinking about buying this, stop thinking and buy it, just keep in mind that it's not a fast paced game, it's different, don't expect it to be a clone for games that may have a similar aesthetic.

The combat and limited resources are punishing, but overall I would recommend it. The art direction and atmosphere are incredibly unique. It trusts the player's intuition to carry them through the experience, which might be frustrating for those accustomed to most modern games, but it serves to isolate the player and drop them into a world that feels alien.

Is it beutiful? Yes. Is it interesting? Yes! Is it a good game? Totally!! Did I enjoy it? Of course! The game IS great. Scenes are impressive, puzzles are interesting, and even story is actually good. I would like less monsters and more challenging puzzles, but alas, it is very good as it is. But would I recommend it? NO. Because?
ENDING
Revealing anything else would be too much of a spoiler even for my liking.

It is like if H.R. Giger had a baby had a baby with a surrealist nightmare, it’s gross, and kind of beautiful. The world is dripping with atmosphere, there’s no hand-holding. It’s not about action, it’s more about soaking in the nightmare, highly recommended.

The graphics are awesome. The mystery of the whole setting is intriguing, but I feel like I was sold this game under false pretenses. Every preview I saw made it look like "Doom", when it's actually more like "Myst". Too many puzzles. Not enough action.
