I really wanted to like it, but after my first 2.5 hours, I have to say it's boring. The only interesting thing is the art style. The story so far has been pretty dull, and the combat system unfortunately doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I'll continue it at some point, but I don't see that happening right now. Unfortunately, it just doesn't manage to captivate me at all.

So far a fantastic game. The only things that bother me are that the stories can be a bit much and the sudden spikes in difficulty. For me, I kind of need to complete whatever game I'm playing fairly fast, or at least keep at it. Any prolonged breaks and I forget the emotions there within. For instance if someone kills my father or something in the game and I set out on a quest to avenge him it's hard to keep up that energy or emotions 6 months later. So with that being said at the beginning it kind of bogs you down after 8 freaking introductory sequences in a row. 8 times you meet a character, something bad happens, you go to the dungeon and fight a boss, then set out into the world. So after 8 completely different stories you start to lose steam from the first ones stories. You can do any characters introduction at any time but you have to do them all in a row to move on to the 2nd act in their personal story as it's a high level. A level far beyond what is an acceptable amount of grind time if you skip a few. So now your stuck in between doable low level enemies and unwinnable battles with higher level exp enemies. The other point is the infamous 2nd act difficulty spike. Man, they weren't kidding. Even after all party members joined with plenty of grind time in between it hits you like a wall trying to get to the 2nd act of everyone's stories. XP is tripled though but still it's rough. Also, everyone has a special talent they can use when exploring and this can end up feeling a little like a chore to meet a towns person, talk to them, see what items they have, steal or buy from them, inquire if they have any hidden items or useful hints, then if you fail one of those there's a penalty. Get 4 of them and you have to pay money to get back in good standing with the town. I mean this happens with each one with a bubble over their heads. Plus if you don't have the right character on your group you have to come back and go through the town once you do get them. That can get repetitive. Overall I've enjoyed my time with it. Combat is fun but it's from SE so that's to be expected. 7/10

A repetitive role-playing game with cute but basic graphics that is well-suited for lower-end machines. The story is also very generic but still pleasing to go through, with many different characters and colourful different biomes/places to explore. If you don't mind boring tales and constant clicking through the same menus for the 100th time while seeing number go up, then this is for you. Note that any devices using an AMD graphics card will suffer from weird graphical artefacts on all textures in the game when moving characters. I would therefore advise not getting game unless you have an Nvidia or Intel card available (I would even recommend using specifically for this game, onboard graphics from CPU if it is Intel CPU). Apparently Octopath Traveller 2 does not suffer from this issue, so you could also skip this entry and pick that one up (the stories are unrelated).

Such a beautiful game with 8 unique party members and great stories to follow. I love the combat and how unique each class is. I also love how many combinations you can do with combining the classes. This game shows how amazing pixel art can be. My main complaint is I wish the characters stories mingled more with each other. But other then that I had such a great time with my playthrough

peak music with rpg turnbased gameplay, a emphasis on grinding, and open ended storytelling. worth on sale or maybe just looking at the second game in this series is a better option.

Overrated and dull. Repetitive combat is a bad combination with the fact that the game is about TRAVELLING across the map for a very long time. Story is mid. A lot of room for better because it either doesn't lean into the characters' themes enough, it's too slow-burn, or the characters are unrelatable anime slop archetypes lacking depth. No skill progression. You just hoard levels for stats. Uninteresting equipment items, only eight or so skills per class. You're supposed to focus on synergizing those skills through multiclassing and party comps. Graphics and artstyle are neat, for those who play games for aesthetics instead of gameplay. 6 outa 10. Good enough for a passing grade, but it could be better.

The art is beautiful, the music is fantastic, but you need to be a super JRPG fan to really like this game I'd guess. By the steam achievement stats only about 50% of players get through the first chapter(s). This is the point where it starts dragging because you'll need to farm experience and the combat gets rather predictable. Same thing happened with the stories, they have interesting starts but the characters and situations just felt repetitive and the dialogue and VA's are not good enough to turn something boring around. The characters all seem to suffer from dumb anime protagonist syndrome where they fall for the same stupid predictable tricks all the time but come out victories in the end because of the power of friendship. Bleh. The boss battles have too much HP, some of them take 30 minutes which is not fun. The regular battles do a good job in their length if you figure out the mechanics. The characters are horribly unbalanced, start with the thief for easy mode, start with the merchant for hard mode. The characters overworld abilities are duplicative of each other, but one is always just worse than the other, which is unfortunate. The job system doesn't feel quite right either, but I've never been a big fan of job systems so maybe this just isn't my cup of tea. I do recommend this game but only just barely, I kept switching from the thumbs up and thumbs down as I wrote this. I ended up on thumbs up because the first five or ten hours of this game put a smile on my face I haven't had for quite a while with other JRPGs. So get this one sale or play a demo first or something.

I can't see the game (like pre-nerf radahn in elden ring), and it has no mouse controls

Good game, it captures the classic RPG elements/ I recommend it although I am missing some things, like more animations during combat.

Graphics - 5/10 Gameplay - 8/10 Soundtracks - 10/10 Story - 7.8/10 Controls - 9.8/10 Quests - 11/10 I am not a fan of the new HD-2D art style that SE is going for. I prefer flat 2D. The game has a lot of content. Every NPC has a part to play and a role in the world. Even after you finish the main story, the game is not over and there is still many secrets to find. Hidden jobs, Secret villains, The return of a dead god, etc. This is a text heavy game and you need to pay attention to the walls of text to fully immerse in the game. Tip: if you are struggling with the game, you can every fight easy by using the merchant class and using the 'hired help' skill.

It's ok. A narrow thumbs up for me. My biggest problem with this game is that it's just so damn repetitive. Every fight feels exactly the same: poke the enemy until you've discovered their weak weapons/elements, then ram those things at them constantly. Repeat until you win. There's no real strategy or dynamic tactics. That aside, the story is decent, the graphics and music are pleasant, and there's just enough loot to be mildly engaging. I played until I finished my four preferred characters, and ignored the quest lines of the other four. I don't regret it.

This game has been something I have looked forward to playing for years and I have definitely given it a fair try - 14 hours. Unfortunately, the game just bores me to death. The art and music is nice, but when travelling in circles with repetitive fights to go from alternate story to story lines, it just doesn't matter. Not being able to focus on one story at a time is a real pain and just having to pick everyone up and level them whilst the map scaling is just annoying. I wish this game could have become something special to me, as it is definitely a type of game I usually love, I just could not stand it. At some point it was honestly painful to keep going to see if it will get better after 15-20 hours lmao. TL;DR: Story + Pacing - 2/10 Art - 8/10 Music - 7/10 Gameplay - 3/10 Don't bother...

Man, I wish I had looked more into this game before I played it but what a disappointment. I played for a few hours and that's only because I kept hoping it would get more interesting. The beginning of the game is such a chore I just couldn't get through it.

The game is gorgeous but I'm bored to death. The characters don't really stand out to me, except in bad ways. Chaucer Ye' Olde English is annoying to read and an era too far for me. I can do Shakespeare just fine, but this is too archaic to enjoy and I just kept getting pissed at the localizer flexing their overpriced English degree in my face. Some characters are clearly better than others, both in town skills and in combat. Yes, you can change jobs but you need to grind for ungodly hours to pull off a max team. I have done that in games with compelling characters and narratives but this ain't it. Feels like a proof of concept more than a living world. The art charms. The gameplay mechanics are actually good, but implemented poorly. Characters don't need to feel so redundant or pointless. If you can't bother to write them, then don't waste my time with them. I would have loved Pentagon Traveller or whatever just fine. As it is, I am not finishing this. I have too much else to do. Wish I could refund as this is just a black hole in my library now. Never to finish.

Took like 5 or so hours before I felt hooked in. Hecka fun after that. Difficulty can ramp up pretty quick though, if you're not careful.

Nostalgic JRPG experience, really reminds me of my childhood JRPG gaming time. I read some reviews of OT2 and be told that it's better than OT1 but OT1 it's already good enough to me lol. Would def try OT2 after but right now I just need to get more spare time to enjoy OT1. Overall, 8.5 / 10, +0.5 if you are a JRPG fan.

Should you choose to buy this, it Will sink its teeth into you someday, and you will most certainly spend far, far too much time playing it. Beautifully designed, wherever in the world you go. Truly one for pixelart enjoyers such as myself Solid tbc though, and great story from as far as I've followed each PC's quest lines. I've not 100%ed it yet, so this review is subject to change and an uncompleted disclaimer

I am burned down on pixel-games. However modern visual effect makes this game beautiful... PROS: + Great Music + Stunning visuals + Good (but limited) voices + Stellar sound + Battle system + Presentation + Final Fantasy vibes + Perfomance runs flawless on a 4090 and 1080. + I noticed not a single crash or bug. Rare these days. CONS: - 8 diffrent stories, i prefer one big one. - There is no reason why those 8 main characters travel together. They have no interaction with eachother (apart from generic banter that become optional once every chapter) - Its hard to get into to the story. There is simply to much game-time between chapters. I started with Haanit first, Haanit's in chapter 2 needed more levels so i did her story last. there was about 30houres of gameplay between the chapters(if you do all sidequests, exp farming, and other extra. The plot is like a waching a episode on Netflix. When you are don watching. Start 3 another shows and after 6 months resume the first show. Its hard to get back into the story. - The plot is: meh.... - You can get 4 secret jobs. In my opinion they are avalaible to late in the game. I got strong enough to beat the bosses chapter 4. Near the end. So you basically can only use them for some optional side quest after the story is finished. -Boring sidequests

Such an amazing game. I have been tired of JRPG's for a long time. This had been sitting in my backlog and I finally sat down to play it. So much fun.
