I'm usually ok with DRM, but in this case it's pretty much uneccessary considering how small this game really is, and it's made worse by the fact that the CD Key you're given doesn't even seem to work. Don't buy Good job Capcom

The DRM with the 5 machine lifetime activation limit is just unacceptable. The limit was raised to 20 but it really shouldn't have any activation limits that doesn't replenish. The game is alright but the hassle to actually play the thing isn't worth it. Replenishing activations would have been the best move but they likely figured that nobody would ever want to play this game anyway. Low activation limits says to me that even Capcom didn't think it was a very good game. I burned 3 activations just to play it the first time. This was back when it still only had 5 lifetime activations.

2021: There are NO more DRM issues, the game works fine. This is a fun little retro-style game, especially considering it was made as a "April Fools parody" of Dark Void, later made into a full game. Originally released for the Nintendo DSi, then later ported to PC, it's intended to have a classic NES feel to it. For me, it really does not look or feel like an NES game, the color pallet is different and it's just too "advanced". It's more of a "how you remember it" rather than "how it actually it was" style. There is nothing wrong with that at all! If I want to play an NES game, I will do just that. The game is fun to play, not too difficult, and scratches that retro itch. Especially for $5 or less. Here in 2021, the game activated just fine for me and runs perfectly on Windows 10.

I rarely write reviews but wanted to shed some light for the "Activation key" problems that people were having... Credits go to this article from the community hub - http://steamcommunity.com/app/45730/discussions/0/613940109841685105/ In short - Report problem to https://www.fuzeqna.com/capcomsupport/consumer/question.asp From Level 1 Dropdown - Select "PC" From Level 2 Dropdown - Select "Dark Void Zero" - Provide your serial key with explaination - take snapshot (I used Window's snipping tool) of your activation error and also snapshot of Steam's receipt. Within the next day, Capcom's customer support responded and activated my key from SecuROM's database. Now for the actual review of the game itself - After only playing this game for an hour, I would say that it was worth my $1 from steam's capcom sale. It has a nice classic, retro feel reminiscent of my childhood NES days. I will say that the controls are rather clunky which provides challenge of playing this game. The game allows you to map the controls on your gamepad and also switch to fullscreen (thru menu option or pushing ALT+Enter). Very simplistic and easy to pick up. Reminds me of a mash-up between Metroid and Contra. I only recommend this game for it being only $1 and having the will/courage to go through the trouble of activating your key.

The DRM on this game renders it unplayable. **** DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!! ***** EVEN $0.99 USD IS TOO MUCH, IT DOESN'T WORK DOESN'T RUN, DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. Steam gives you a SN that precious snow flake securom of course has no record of. Good grief, I have better things to do with my time than to hunt down idiots who insist on DRM'ing their crap to only render it unusable to the end user. Thank goodness I didn't buy copies for all my friends as $0.99 seemed like such a bargain, instead it is a lesson in punishing the end users. Way to go guys! Maybe in another 20 years they will release a version of this game that actually works. But the world will be too busy playing Call of Duty 37.

Capcom retroactively adds obscure drm to they older titles breaking modding, support on steam deck and causing performance issues/crasehes. I do not recommend supporting Capcom for as long as they are harming they own paying customers.

TLDR, if you like difficult and retro inspired games this is probably for you though it is a bit rough in a few places (And you can no longer purchase it as of 2022). *Story: As with most action NES titles, it has a simple "Kill all of enemy faction" story. What is more interesting than the in-game story however, is the made up story for this game's release. Supposedly this was another game developed by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System Circa 1987 like Mega Man or Bionic Commando, and was recently found in the possession of a former contest winner. In-game story gets a 7/10, it's inoffensive, and it gets the job done. The story they made up for the origin of the game is a 9/10. *Graphics: They generally stay true to the limitations of the NES which this game is based after. There are a few sprites which have a few too many colors in the same place for this to have been believably released on the Famicom. Since this game was once a DSIWare exclusive and uses a lot of low resolution PNGs for its visuals, it looks really blurry if played on large monitors. I wish they would have upscaled the game for the PC release. In terms of accuracy, it's decent, but the blurriness sets it back some: 6/10. *Gameplay: It plays a lot like similar action platforming games that actually released for the NES back in the 1980s and early 1990s. As is expected of a game of its type, it has very tight controls and a few beginner's trap moments that will likely catch you off guard the first time. For a familiar comparison, it plays a lot like how Contra would if you had a could fly and had to complete objectives. Due to how common the life restoration hearts are in the game, this is generally not that difficult of a game if you're used to playing stuff like this. Regardless, this game has three difficulty options: Easy, Medium, and Hard. If you want to get as much mileage out of this game as possible I would recommend hard, though easy is good for when you want to get some of the achievements. 8/10. *Sound: The sound effects and music are generally fine, though again due to this being a port of a DS game the quality is a bit crunched and should have been improved in this release, though you look past it after a while. Really as far as I can tell the music and sound effects are NES authentic, no issues here. Now in terms of music variety, I believe this game only has 7 or so music tracks, most of those are story and boss themes. Since the game only has three levels, those three levels get one track each, and it can get monotonous after long play sessions. The music isn't really anything special among NES games, but it's not bad if you look past the slight sound crunch 6/10. *Achievements: This game's achievements are a mixed bag, it isn't that long of a game so they really had to reach to get 30 achievements. On one hand you get completion achievements and collectible achievements, on the other you have a ton of grueling grinding achievements; one of which can take you an hour or more to get. In between those there are a few that don't belong to either category which are pretty fair. 7/10 Play this game if you want to, though you're probably going to have to via other means since it was taken off Steam. If like me you're a huge retro junkie, this game is worth a shot and works as a B range NES title if you can look past the auditory and visual crunch from porting this game.

I like hard platformers but this one is hard for the wrong reasons. Basically you have only 3 lifes and if you run out you have to restart the whole level again(and each level is pretty big). If you make it to the second level with no lifes left, then you have to beat that level without dying once or you have to restart the whole game and try to make it to the second level with more lifes. I got 99% in Super Meat Boy, because it's a fun and challenging game. With Dark Void Zero i gave up in the second level. Not because it was too hard but because it punishes failure too hard and doesnt respect my time.

Platformer that can, at times, be very frustrating. If you die, you have to start all over. The levels aren't that big so it's not that big of a deal, but there are only 3 levels. So you'll die at least a few times. The graphics remind me of the 90's 2D games; charming and stylish. And for €4 you can't go wrong, at least it's a whole lot better than the other Dark Void game. It's a fun little game for a few bucks, so I can recommend the game itself. BUT, the SecuRom anti-piracy makes it a bit hard to play. I didn't understand how to activate it until I found the key under "Manage>CD Keys" in Steam, but I was able to get it so it seems the issues other comments mentioned are resolved. Still, pretty silly that this is simpler to play on DSiWare than on modern PCs.

Haha, this game is so charming. I mostly played is on Nintendo DS, where if I remember correctly, you have to blow in the microphone to get the game started.. as if you were blowing in an NES cartridge. Back when this game was releasing they did a rather novel advertising campaign, where they pretended this was a lost dual screen Nintendo Arcade machine game. Anyway this plays like a classic Capcom NES game, probably most similar to Bionic Commando, except with a jetpack rather than a mechanical arm. If you still love 8-bit games like I do, you should like this.

The DRM in this game is both intrusive, and draining on PC resources, and has limited activations to boot. My CPU usage went from 7% to 100%, which should not happen in an imitation 8-bit game, and prevented me from starting it up a second time after the initial install. What I did get to play suffered from controls that felt stiff and uncomfortable to use. Even at 80% off, this is not worth the money.

It feels like a cheap cash in and leaves a lot to be desired of a small rom port. They could have taken a few steps to make this much better and they just decided to take the easiest and laziest route which I do not appreciate, not for the money spent. Would not recommend to anybody unless you're a diehard fan and feel the need to own this.

Customers beware! SecuROM activation code that comes with the purchase is invalid. Steam, Capcom and SecuROM should do something about this, but for now they blame each other and send buyers to each other's support. Check the threads in the community forums for more details. UPD: The key can be activated successfully now, but I will leave this review as a warning to publisher.

This game requires you to register with SecuROM. Another annoying DRM service. Upon first attempt, this did not work for me. Double DRM is extremely annoying, but even more annoying is games that don't work. However, an email to SecuROM solved the issue, took a day for them to respond, now the game works fine. Don't let the DRM issue keep you from buying this game. If you're a fan of NES games, this is a game you'll want to pick up. As annoying as it was to have to make the game work, it wasn't in any way difficult. One email and a bit of time, now I'm one more sweet game richer for it. I'd say that was a $1 well spent.

Too much bullshit to set up the game and once you get the game running, you find out that the game just isn't that fun, not to mention that they didn't even bother to sharpen the picture quality or at least give us picture settings. It's literally just the DSi game enlarged.

Well. This is it. The first game I've had to give a thumbs down. It's also the first game I asked for a refund over. Is Dark Void Zero the worst game I've ever played? No. But it's also not very fun. Which is a shame because it has all the components for a good game: colorful graphics, action platforming, and a cool sci-fi theme. But the problem is that none of those things are done particularly well. Dark Void Zero tries to bank on its retro-for-retro's-sake aesthetic without actually delivering a solid experience like the games it hearkens back to. The gameplay of Dark Void Zero boils down to navigating large, maze-like levels with the aid of a jetpack. You shoot enemies and dodge obstacles. There are level objectives thrown in, like hitting a switch or finding an item. And the game is short, too, only having three levels to play through. So what's wrong with it all? To begin with, the graphics, while bright, do not look good. Take a step back and compare a game like Batman: Return of the Joker to Cybernoid. One looks much better than the other. Now take a step forward and compare a game like Axiom Verge or Odallus to Dark Void Zero. When the ability to make gorgeous pixel graphics is as accessible as it is today, there's no reason for Dark Void Zero to look this bad. Moving on, the controls suck. 8-way navigating should not be frustrating. In Dark Void Zero it is. It doesn't help that the level design, instead of being open and wide, is tight and cramped. The freedom of zooming about, shooting bad guys is replaced with being corralled around narrow corridors and shafts. What makes that even worse is that oftentimes any powerups you might have found (which are more difficult to get than they're worth) are taken away from you to which you're then forced to use another, more inferior weapon for a portion of the map. Why give me the freedom to explore when you take away the fruits of my labor? That would be like playing the original Zelda, and after working hard to find all of the extra Hearts and the Magic Sword and the Red Ring, walking through a door only to be reduced to four Hearts and the Wooden Sword. Why? Why give me the option of finding secrets that only aid me in finding secrets that in turn don't help me in completing the stage? I've seen a few people laud this game for its classic NES style. As an avid collector, I can say right now that if this game was released back in the day it would be about $5 in a bargain bin, even with todays price inflations. "Retro" does not excuse a bad game. You want a good "retro" NES game? Play Shatterhand. Or Vice. Or Ninja Gaiden III. Or Batman. I could keep going, but my point stands: 8 bit graphics and sound do not excuse a bad game. Poor game design like that is what held this game back. Poor game design, along with its poor controls and poor level design, make this game too difficult for the wrong reasons. I find this very similar to the original Dark Void: full of potential, but flying just short of quality.

UPDATE: After a long time, Capcom fixd the issue with activation (on both this and, allegedly, the AAA version of "Dark Void"). The game activates and runs now just fine for me, which was the issue with the game originally for me and led to a negative review. Haaaaaaving said that, the game itself is not my cup of tea. From what very little I played, it's a *too* accurate recreation of 8-bit era sidescrollers. The same NES-type sound, the same simplistic visuals, the same not-that-reliable controls, the same hard-as-balls level design and gameplay. Considering this was released in 2010, when cheap, retro-looking titles were still at their infancy, you should keep in mind that this isn't like the retro-indies that have been released since then, with the impressive pixel-art and great soundtrack that simply pay homage to that era. This is a NES title through and through (with a richer color palette). It's not bad for what it is, but especially for four bucks, I can't see the reason to play this unless you've gone through your entire NES library so many times you need something new-ish. Then again, what do I know? Now that Nintendo killed ROMS, this may as well be your last chance to play one of these games on PC.

I'm not rating game itself - I can not play this game because there is problem with SecuR*M protection - it does not accept activation code provided by STE*M system. I've contacted SecuR*M, they said it's not their problem and sent me to publisher, which is Capc*m. I wrote to Capc*m but got no response so far. That aside, in my opinion sole fact that it has SecuR*M with "5 machine activation limit" is enough to give it a negative review and encourage people not to buy it.

The control is the biggest problem, but the sloppy design, blurry scaling (there is no native rez for this game, only fullscreen and windowed), sloppy framerate, weird hitboxes, and trolly trial-and-error level design also contribute. Never once do I feel that I am in proper control, able to effectively fight the enemies. I feel like a toddler trying to do heart surgery; there is NO way I'll ever be able to do anything precise. The weapons are generally uninspired, the story is totally DGAF, and the rocket pack handles like SHIT. To top that off, you NEVER recorver your lives from stage to stage or on load, so if you use them all in the first stage (and you probably will, what with the insta-kill lava pits that you can't see because the lower 1/5 of the screen is obscured by your "notifications" EVERY SINLGE TIME you get an item), you will have NO lives for the second stage. Or third. You can't get 1-Ups from enemies. TL;DR - This game was NOT well planned, and though I spent $0.99 on it, I feel as if even THAT was too much. 0.5/10

I was going to write paragraphs about how badly designed this game is but I'll just say this. It's not funny or challenging or retro having instant kill mines, instant kill exploding enemies and instant kill lava in areas that you have to use the jetpack, in a game where you only have 3 lives and no continues. It's just bad.

I'd precaution that I don't think this game is a bad game, I just can't recommend this version. I bought this game in a sale a while ago and am just playing it seriously now. If you have any interest in this game, and if you own any Nintendo handheld from the DSi onward, buy that version instead. I haven't played the DSiware version, mind you, but from videos of gameplay I figured the PC version would be somehow better in it least resolution, but a better look at the graphics here only serve to the games' detriment; the native resolution on the DS makes it look as if it were a unique step beyond 8-bit, the 2 options (windowed and fullscreen) on PC make it look like poor mockery of a NES game. One problem I have which I presume is present in both versions is that the sound design (other than the music) is inconsistent with the "retro" theme, with some sounds being appropriate and some just being poorly masked modern sound effects, which is jarring when noticed. I had to drag the windowed screen to a much smaller size to make the graphics decent looking, and also put the sound effects down to minimum and the music 3 notches above it - there was some definite oversight with whoever made the default options so bad. If you've made the same mistake of already buying this version of the game, this is at least the most optimal way to play it. Now, my biggest gripe with this port is the blatant removal of an integral feature: the map. The DSiware version gives it to you on the bigger top screen the entire time, like the DS Castlevania games. Here, Mr. Tesla is constantly referring to having updated your map, and THERE IS NO MAP. There isn't even a button to bring it up. You could argue that the map is unnecessary given how simple the map is, and maybe this is a direct throwback to Metroid I & II, but again, it is CONSTANTLY referred to in game, and those are the only games in the series that are too obtuse to play now without the use of a guide. I could have overlooked it here if they only removed that from the dialogue. That Capcom hasn't is obscenely lazy, and as a result, there is no justification for having released this game in the state it is in. I had no issues with the CD-Key, but it was still an unnecessary and inconvenient step in the process further defining this version as the inferior port. Edit: Nevermind, the M key brings up the map, which is explained nowhere and I had to find out online! Still can't recommend this version.

Buy it and if the activation refuses to work, get a refund. I bought this a long time ago and on Windows 7 it refused to activate. After upgrading to 10, I gave it another try and it worked. Don't know if the OS change fixed it or not, but it's working. This game is a ton of fun and better than the other, modern, Dark Void. It's like this game actually came out on the SNES. I have more fun with this than most modern AAA games released. Why can't Capcom just make games like this? Only complaint is the DRM.

NOTE: this game was intended as an april fools joke (google it). It's not worth the 5$. It looks as though they put in a lot of effort into this so I have to give them props for that but the control is just really bad. They should have polished the controls more before releasing this as it could have been a better experience. This game is Bangai-O meets a fakebit Game Maker Studio game. It had potential but the controls were sloppy. Maybe the nintendo ds version is better,

I got it to work, although it took 2 days for Capcom to add the key steam gives to Securom allowing me to actually play the game. I got it when it was 0.99. It is worth the money I sent, at the very least, but It isn't worth the time it took to be able to play it. When you crouch you will always shoot down, even though i have yet to encounter a floor that you can shoot through, and the jet pack wavering makes it hard to not fumble into obstacles. That harm you. And enemies can shoot through. That you can't. Also It has the arcade format of three lives then done, but unlike most of the games that are like it, you have no continue option. Every time you die you die for good and have to start over. Over all it is just kinda mediocre, and not worth the effort.

Could not play because of faulty serial number. Wish I had read the others reviews before purchasing. Don't feel like going through all the hassle of bugging Capcom to fix the problem, it's a little ridiculous that the customer would have to jump through hoops to use a product they purchased outright. I've never had this issue with a Steam purchase before, very disappointing.

This game is actually really, really good... on DSi/3DS. It's a great retro style game with an amazing soundtrack. Just don't make the mistake I made of buying this on Steam. I should have read the reviews about how this game does not work and there's no support and it is a complete money trap. Why Steam would allow this from such a high profile publisher is beyond me. I guess anyone can publish a 93mb file with a couple screenshots call it a game even if it doesn't work on Steam now. That seems like a good precedent to set. Can't wait until iTunes allows album downloads that won't play.

Many people are complaining about the awful, awful secuROM DRM. Yes it's annoying but just go to the community guides section and contact capcom. It took less than 5 mins to do and they got back to me the next day. So hows the game? Actually quite fun. I saw some of the negative reviews saying unresponsive/clunky controls but it's really nothing you can't get used to. Mostly the jetpack is a pain but like I said, you adjust and get used to it, Though I would probably recommend a controller with a good D-pad. Really, go into this game expecting an NES style game right down to control style and you probably will enjoy it.

This review may change if Steam Support can figure out how to get the game to activate! I feel like ranting like Angry Joe! Update: 2 days ago on 11/11/14, I finally got a reply back from Capcom Support! I was told that my code will now work, and it finally did! With this game you have to contact Capcom Support for now, they'll do an investigation, and it may take almost two weeks, but when they are done, you will be able to play the game! DRM sucks, and is ruining gaming, it is getting worst! I enjoyed the game, it is a never before released NES game for PC, but beware, serious DRM problem with this game!

A nice little throwback to the NES days. It is far too short, though, even for its price tag of $5. If it's ever on sale, fans of the genre can pick it up for a little over 3 hours of entertainment. Take my advice and play it with an XBox controller or something similar with a comparable D-pad. Watch my full review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHQVUfb_AMM&feature=youtu.be

Get's the Retro Feel to the core. It's almost as if they used the same tools here as they used to make NES games 25 years ago. I fully enjoyed my time spent with this game. Nice and short but fun thoughout. Capcom needs to make more of these types of games. They also need to release the MM9-10 on PC, but that is another story.

Enemies respawn while you are in the room, forces weapon changes. It achieves what it attempts to, it's a game that's made with a very 8 bit or 16 bit philosophy. If that appeals to you then you might like this game, but I personally feel it's too faithful to dated design mechanics. C quality I'd say.

let us list the reasons this game should not be purchased for any price- the moment you boot up the game, you're hit with a securom security code thingymadoodle. this doesn't even work and in most cases won't even let you into the game. the security thingy only gives you a few licenses so, even though you paid for the game with your own money, you're limited to how many times you download the game. if you happen to get past all the security stuffs, the game is awful. it has terrible controls and the graphics look less pixelated and more compressed JPEG. have fun kids.

Good job guys the serial that's given is invalid. Good way to waste money. No matter how small the amount it's stil annoying. Seriously don't buy it.

The key doesn't work. Capcom support is worst than shit. If you buy this game you can't play it, but the pirates can. Kudos to Capcom UPDATE Now in Windows 10 everything works fine the game is small and pretty good. The negative review stays for Capcom and Securom.

I never experienced the 80s, but I was around back when NES games where still being made. I remember playing on it when I was a kid and having so much fun. If a game didn’t work just blow on it, once in the console and just try again. Graphics didn’t matter, there were only 64 colors anyway. Originally Dark Void Zero was created as an April Fools prank, but somehow the devs thought to make it an actual game. However this game turned out to be much better than the one it was promoting. Dark Void Zero is kind of a throwback to the 80s, same colors, same sounds, same clunky controls. It all fits perfectly. I actually own this game twice, I downloaded it first on the Nintendo DSi, where I played it much more than I did on the PC. The PC version only differs in one point, which is the death cam at the end, where you see every point where you died during your play. Now actually I like it better on the DSi than I do on the PC, but that’s not the point. Beyond all of that, I’m not that sure that there’s more to it. It has a story, like most games, that has been done. It has three levels, most games in the 80s where relatively short due to soft-and hardware limitations. To make up for their lack of longevity, they made them hard. Playing this game on easy would be more in the line of above normal. Playing it on hard, would be hard as fuck. You will definitely get what you ask for. Pros ------ - If this game was made at the height of the NES, it would be a classic by now - Good graphics - Nice quality sounds - Challenging difficulties - Requires some skill and finesse to learn some tricks Cons ------ - Only three levels, I know it’s supposed to be like ‘an old NES’ game, but I didn’t even like that back then - Off-screen respawning enemies, any time I kill something I want it to stay dead instead of making me dead - Really hard on hard, I guess I’m just not used to it anymore Recommendation ----------------------- - Play it with a controller Final note ------------- If it is good enough to own twice, it’ll be pretty okay to own once.

Quite ironic that a £3 downloadable "new" retro game originally designed for the iPhone turns out to be better than the £40 full game that this game was tasked with promoting. For the record, I bought the full game of Dark Void for £3 on black friday. I would have much rather used the money to buy...I don't know...a bag of Doritos? Dark Void ZERO on the other hand is well...ANYTHING BUT A ZERO! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA please don't hate me :(

This is a great little game. I can't say anything about the Securom DRM, but for me I have no problem installing it and playing on a new installation on a new PC, though I did own it within a few months of it came out. I'd say go for it if you want a fun little retro romp that's much better than the game it comes from.

My review in numbers so far (only played first level): Music: 7/10 Controls: 9/10 Difficulty: 6/10 Retrofactor: 10/10 This game feels like playing Megaman or Metroid again, as I did as a child on the NES... This game is NOT that clunky and hard as everyone else here seems to think... The other gamers probably have not played the NES games back in the 80s... The controls are awesome, sure it takes like 30 seconds to get the hang of the jetpack but then it becomes 2nd nature.
