Love this game, it is great. That is when swords aren't being shoved up my a$$ and my ship gets sunk faster than the crew votes me into the brig for breathing too loud. And tell me why I can easily stack up a Fort of the Damned or two, but then right as I'm ready to leave, two galleons roll up like it's their 9-to-5 job to ruin my entire bloodline. I blink once and suddenly I'm watching my loot get auctioned off by some 12-year-old on voice chat who calls me 'brokie' mid-sink. Anyways, besides that, the game is great and you should definitely give it a shot.

(opinion) I feel like this is the kind of game that's more fun to watch streamers play, not really to play yourself. There's *aspects* of the game I do enjoy, and sometimes I THINK I want to play it, but I'm usually proven wrong. Most describe this game as a PvPvE game, but it's more accurate to say it's a PvP game with minigames sprinkled within in the form of voyages. You would think doing voyages would be fun, except what most players do is plundering loot, so the only reason voyages are even there are so other players can exploit that newer player that doesn't know any better. But that's not to say most players ONLY target voyagers, as the game is very much "shoot on sight and ask questions never", which results in any and all player encounters resulting in a fight. But beyond that, the game is just Schizophrenic in its design, as several mechanics and gameplay styles outright clash with eachother, as if there was more of a focus on adding 'more' content to keep players invested instead of thinking about how content meshes with the rest of the game. The game has a very respectable wealth of voyages that have randomized elements, tall tales for a more structured story, and a vast world that's filled with lore, but almost all of it goes unused because of the aformentioned "shoot on sight" nature of the game, so you'll usually be interrupted and forced into defending. You might be tempted to try the Safer Seas for this, and that'll definitely provide a more private experience, but the game still penalizes you for being on there with the reputation caps. Another problem is actually with the reputations themselves. Since captaincy, the game's been adding more and more 'reputation' meters to level up for a staggering number of unlockables, to the degree you could be working on 3-7 different forms of progression at once. But because so many cosmetics are locked behind the different progressions and commondation achievements, you're left with a bloated to-do list of seemingly arbitrary things you need to do to unlock most cosmetics. You might see something interesting in an in-game store that requires a certain commondation, and then spend a good hour or two searching through more than 600 random commondations in each little category the game offers you, from the factions to bilge rats to tall tales and so on. It's not exactly easy to sift through half of a thousand achievements, a lot of which have very indistinct icons, looking for the one that has the exact name you're looking for. Beyond that, a lot of the commondations are extremely unnecessary, like two different commondations for the same voyage where one is for times starting the voyage and the other is for times finishing it. Moving on to the PvP itself, it can be a very mixed bag at the best of times, and it usually comes in two forms: Wild encounters and hourglass. If you aren't doing the hourglass matchmaking, you're sailing the map aimlessly hunting down another player, usually a ship that's either way bigger or way smaller than you. If you start the encounter, there's really nothing for you to lose and no reason to be afraid of losing, while the other player usually has a sudden chance of having their entire evening ruined because you got the drop on them. Even if you're unlucky and the other player wins, you're unlikely to have anything but basic supplies on your ship, leaving to the player you attacked wasting their cannonballs, planks, and food for nothing. A number of voyaging players might even scuttle if another ship approaches because they KNOW winning the fight will leave them with nothing but fewer resources to defend themselves from the NEXT time a player wants a piece of them. You might have fun for your first few matches in hourglass, and that can be a very heavy 'might' at times. How hourglass pvp works for those who don't know is that you're matched up with another ship that has the same ship type and number of players as you (so a 2 person brigg will ALWAYS fight a 2 person brigg). The naval combat in of itself can feel fun, and the reward for succeeding can be good (even if it adds ANOTHER form of progression to the already staggering pile). But this is mostly assuming you have friends who have the same game as you, have the same free time as you, and have the same passion for the game as you do. If you have all of that, you're basically set to go. But if your friend has scheduling conflicts, doesn't like the game, or you just don't have friends that like playing games, you're stuck with what I can confidently say is the most miserable experience the game has to offer. You either have to get lucky with your opponent loss-farming or wanting to roll dice, or you're stuck slogging through a resource game. I do not exaggerate, unless you're willing to spawn-camp your opponent and sail them out of bounds while they're unable to do anything, you HAVE to just throw cannonballs and hope they have less than you, as you usually aren't safe to board since you'll also get holes in your own ship. Some people find this fun, but I just find it exhausting and ultimately unrewarding. This leads into the point that being a solo-sloop (single player) is a nightmare in the game as a whole. Since you don't have any other players, you need to either sit on your ship and keep a lookout constantly, or cross your fingers and hope you don't get ambushed while you go off to actually play one of the game's voyages. Not to mention that if you're not in hourglass PvP, 9/10 times you'll usually be encountering larger crews than you. There are certainly strategies to put things more in your favor, but it doesn't change the level of focus you need to apply and stress you'll go through to stay above water, especially if the players on your server happen to be either a Reaper or are otherwise actively hunting you down at all times. I got into the game around season 6, and while it was certainly the point after "shoot on sight" became the norm, I still got the odd non-hostile interaction. Sure, we weren't working towards any objectives, but we were having fun in a sandbox. I even got halfway to getting a group together to do the glitterbeard secret before some of them had to log off. It wasn't "profitable" in in-game currency, it didn't work towards a thousand and one reputation level-ups, but it was fun. And I feel like the game, and by consequence it's playerbase, forgot that that 'fun' was originally the core of the game. I won't exaggerate and say the game should be "sea of friends" or anything drastic like that, people are allowed to play their games however they want as long as it isn't literally hacking or breaking the game. But I sometimes wish I could've gotten this game at launch, back when there weren't any factions or unlocks, when it was just people on the sea. I've stuck with the game for 10 seasons, with the occasional break from the game when the stress and frustration got to me. But at this point, I think I've seen about everything I wanted from the game. Maybe I'll briefly pick it up in the future, take some friends onto safer seas, but I don't think I'll be playing on high seas ever again. I'm glad that streamers find the game fun, I just wish I could enjoy the game like they did.

The game is great! Lots to do. Can rock the "Safer Seas" mode to get a feel as to how the game's mechanics all work without worrying about other players attacking you. Then once you're comfortable with everything, you can head into High Seas mode and open up a whole new world of things to do, see, and interact with. It's a pirate game, so don't expect a lot of the players to be friendly, BUT I have had mostly positive encounters with other players. (There are even specific trophies/achievements for deliberate positive interactions with other players/crews/guilds!) MAIN GRIPE: Server connection stability is dodgy at best, and infuriating at worst. Highly recommended that you frequently do your turn-ins at outposts so you don't lose everything when your connection inevitably drops at some point and you can't get back into your session before it times out. I'm fine. EVERYTHING'S FINE. :P

Only players left are toxic tryhards. The game will be shut down within the year at my guess. Player count is averaging around 10k and dropping fast due to unplayability. Cheating is STILL a huge problem because again the only player left are toxic. Game will be Forever dead soon. DO NOT BUY.

I gave this game a fair shot. 11 hours of pure frustration. Spent HOURS peacefully grinding, collecting treasure, doing voyages — only to get jumped by some PvP sweatlord, have my ship sunk in 2 minutes, and lose everything. This isn't "danger adds thrill," it's just unbalanced trash that rewards griefers and punishes anyone who tries to enjoy the actual game content. The worst part? You can’t opt out. There’s no PvE mode. No safe zones. Not even outposts are protected. The devs Refuse to add PvE servers or passive mode despite YEARS of players begging for it. Because making you regrind means more hours played, which makes them look good to Microsoft. The result A toxic, one-sided game where: PvP sweats get free loot with zero effort Peaceful players get robbed, rage, and uninstall Real gameplay (voyages, exploration) feels pointless if you can just steal other people hours loot . the PVP is unbalanced when you have loot they can easly just steal it and when you defend and sink the other player boat you get nothing the pvp only rewarding the one with 0 loot because they have nothing to loose . I loved the idea pirate life, sailing, treasure but this game is built around pure frustration. It’s not fun, it’s not fair , and it’s not worth your money unless you enjoy ruining other people’s fun. so if want a game where you can just chill and grind your way to the top without loosing all your progress this game ain't for you .

I have around 1200-1300 hours on this game (bought on steam not to long ago, played on xbox and xbox app for most of it) in the games current state, I would not recommend buying it, unless you can handle 70-100 ping, piss poor frames (I have a 3070 and sometimes struggle to get over 100 frames on lower settings) very poor community management from the devs, etc. however, I will still religiously be playing this game. My glorious Damage control Production Director Drew Stevens has to get paid somehow.

Full of toxic "PVP" players who are really just there to grief there is a dedicated pvp mode you can play yet i have people hopping on to my ship that has no loot sitting in port just to kill me over and over again there is no reason for that. people say "play safer seas" I say make a less toxic environment for casual players in the real game so i don't have to. save your money this experience is not worth 40$

Fun for a while, but it's primarily PvP for cosmetics and a little prestige for what little it's worth. No meaningful character progression. Filled with toxic griefers but there are a few who still play for fun. The "Safer Seas" option is an option for some but without ANY risk, whats the point!?!

This game could be such a fun, chill game to hang out in, but instead it forces itself into being a pvp game whilst its mechanics are awful. The entire game is filled with toxic PVPers that have nothing better to do than to relentlessly hunt you, made even easier by the god-awful emmisary mechanics, wasting literal hours of your time. And then, when you finally get something done? Nope, cheater teleports onto your ship with a hundred kegs. PVP is completely worthless. There's no stakes for your attackers, so they just keep coming. Kill the pirate, they respawn within 10-20 seconds and you're exactly where you were before. Kill their ship, they just respawn in THE SAME SERVER and come back to hunt you down now that you're low on resources. On top of that, the combat is so jumpy and frantic whilst having truly dogwater feeling guns and swords that it's rife with exploitation and completely not even worth trying as someone who cannot dedicate half of their life to learning everything. It's fun with friends, but barely. All of these issues make it genuinely impossible to recommend.

So much grind for 120GB game. World feels empty and seasons are cutted in half with new content. Buy or play only if your friends will do + if you all have same time to spare. As for solo... If being pirate is not being cheater, toxic / trolling guy or a sweaty palms - I don't know what IS being a pirate. Cause I didn't met a single bro interaction during hundreds of hours. BUT! Now you'll get like 30% of game content though in safe seas! ..yey :D ... I guess.

I devoted hours into this game, only to be constantly met with vile anti-lgbt rhetoric on open-mic, developers that cater to a PVP experience but cripple any notion of single-player/co-op environment, and alters their banning protocols to be less harsh while retroactively giving the middle finger to anyone who'd received wrongful bans and not allowing them a chance back. I have multiple friends who'd simply lost internet at the wrong time and were banned for "Network interference" or something, and their appeals went completely unanswered both before and after the change. Now the few people I've left to play with have moved on to exclusively PVP because we no longer have crews large enough to defend ourselves against the absolutely *jank* PVP combat. You either have to play Reaper and hunt people for a living or you just get your teeth kicked down your throat. No exceptions. It's so f*cking *bad!* I used to have only mild complaints about this game because the experience was overall fun. Now anymore its completely rotten, covered up with shiny gold graphics. I've submitted for a refund even though I know I won't get it, but I'm so tired of this game's crap I don't care so long as it's removed from my library. I've already deleted my account. Anyone who favors a stable pulse should stay away from this game.

If I didn't have friends to play this game with, I absolutely could not tolerate playing this game. The community is godawful, being slotted with randos is torturous, there's nothing fun about the combat. Don't be kind to strangers, and if somebody is docked do them a favor and blast them off the side of the island before they sink a knife in your back. This "dark forest" mentality is 100% necessitated, and it isn't fun. The only two reasons to sink anyone is to either be douche, or sink them before they sink you. Again, I'm lucky enough to have some buddies who enjoy the game, if you don't - then do not engage.

Game is grind grind grind with little pay out. Also you can't sail multiple ships in an armada, so trying to play with more than 4 friends isn't a thing. There is no real upgrades in this game ether; just money to look more cool, but no real upgrades to weapons or ships.Plus, I don't want politics in my game. Just because it's June they have to cater to a small group of people instead of just...catering to people as people. Not a great buy in my opinion. Cheers!

You can spend two solid hours grinding, loading your ship with chests and loot, only for a cheater to show up, land every single shot with inhuman precision, and sink you in seconds. Or worse the game might randomly kick you, the servers go down right as you're about to cash in, and all your progress vanishes. And if you're really unlucky, like me, your entire account might reset back a week for no reason at all no warning, no explanation, and absolutely no way to reach support for help. trash game could be so much more fun if it still had support

One of the BEST open world multiplayer game i have ever played in my life. Not my favourite theme for a game but they really got me with all that the game has to offer. The organic pvp encounters are absolutely amazing almost movie scennario. But time really did this game dirty, slowly going to die, dev's did an awsome job they are still trying to revive the game with seasonal updates but it cannot really be the same again, had it's gllory days but now it is really a collapsing game, the game is 10x better if u play along friends also very fun

Fun game. Can feel repetitive at times playing solo, but the real fun is playing with friends or random crews. As a solo, there's a lot of things to do and discover, it feels like the trick is to not hyper focus on one goal, as that often entails doing the same content over and over. The game is much more engaging when each session feels different, and that largely depends on the player. PvP as a solo can be frustrating because the game doesn't give you any handicaps. Most ships will have more crew than you do, so the fights will almost never be fair. That being said, it can be fun to embrace the idea of cat and mouse. PvP doesn't have to mean taking on other ships, it can be about hoarding loot and then outrunning other players to make it to port unscathed. My main takeaway is that this game doesn't just hand you an amazing experience, but it does provide a fully equipped sandbox for you to make your own amazing experience.
✅ Recommended | ⭐ 7/10

🏴‍☠️ A Beautiful Vessel, Weathered by Time

Objective Review
Platform: PC Performance: It runs acceptably on mid range machines, but based on my experience, I’d recommend having a fairly decent PC to enjoy the game at stable FPS and high visual settings. Fluidity makes a real difference in naval combat and PvP. Gameplay: Core mechanics like sailing, naval combat, and treasure hunting are fun and well executed. However, the experience becomes extremely repetitive when playing solo. There’s a loop of fetch quests and encounters that feel increasingly familiar unless you're with a crew. Visuals & Sound: The art style is truly unique. Sea of Thieves has a distinct aesthetic that stands out and gives the game character. The ocean physics, lighting, and weather effects still look great years later. Sound design complements the atmosphere and elevates the experience. Progression System: It’s not bad, but you’ll need to enjoy the core loop to stay engaged. Advancement mostly involves reputation grinds and cosmetics, which might not satisfy players looking for tangible power progression or narrative depth. Replayability: The game is replayable and often delivers one of a kind moments, especially with friends. That said, it has clearly seen better days. The current state of the game, due to decisions by the newer development team, has dragged it down from its original brilliance. What once felt like a near masterpiece has been slowly worn out by updates and design choices that don’t align with the original vision.
Personal Experience
I played Sea of Thieves mainly with friends, and that’s when it truly shines. Exploring the seas, laughing at chaotic fights, and getting ambushed while carrying absurd amounts of loot led to some unforgettable moments. One time we got into an epic battle with a crew that didn’t even speak our language just yelling, cannons, and pure madness. I later gave it a try solo, and while it does have its moments, there are definitely better options out there if you’re looking for a strong single-player experience. What makes Sea of Thieves stand out is the feeling of freedom the vast ocean, the sense of unknown encounters, and the genuine laughs it generates. But sadly, it’s not in its best shape anymore, and that limits its full potential.
⚓ Recommended only if you have friends to play with and don’t mind dedicating some hard drive space. For solo players, or those seeking structure, there are better games on the horizon.
I've played this game for almost 3000 hours now, first on the Microsoft Store and now on Steam. During that time, unfortunately, I’ve encountered many issues in the game. Leaving aside the fact that most players are very toxic – that happens in every game and doesn't really bother me anymore – it's a different story when the game itself is full of problems. For example, there have been issues with hackers in this game ever since I started playing, and with the new season, even more hackers have returned. If I were a game developer, I’d find that pretty embarrassing. There are also a lot of bugs, which can sometimes be funny, but most of the time they’re just frustrating because they can really mess up the gameplay. A PvP/PvE game should at least be able to handle a few bugs to make the experience more enjoyable. One of the worst things, however, is that the servers can’t handle 8,000 players, which is just plain embarrassing. Honestly, I really enjoy playing this game, but when things end up like this and the updates do nothing against hackers, bugs, and exploits, you start to wonder if Rare is doing anything at all. Instead, they just keep adding events like Gold & Glory weekends, during which the servers are completely overloaded and you end up leaving disappointed. Müsst ihr wissen

Really looking forward to playing this game! That is, in a few years. I'm trying to run this on a device with ARM64, and neither steam or the devs seem to want ARM64 players to be able to do anything online(or even launch the game) due to the horrendous anticheat, which only works half the time anyways. The only way for ARM64 players to play is through immense research, running it through other programs or breaking the anticheat completely off the their computer, forcing themselves to play solo until they install the anticheat back. Like what???? Dude, I have a life. I cant spend hours breaking my computer and your game, just to play a game that I'm supposed to be able to launch in 30 seconds. Anyone that has ARM64, feel free to buy it, maybe they fixed it by now, but seriously, wouldn't recommend. Which sucks, because I was planning on binging this game that I've been waiting weeks for, only to buy it with the summer deal, and find out that I wasted my money.

500 hours in total gameplay, i can assure you its not worth geting it if not from the xbox gamepass for free. Key issues: -Rampant cheating in pvp mod where you need to get the only good curses (They are exeptional skins with uniqe accesory designe.) -unstabel servers where no mater how good your intenret is it will not give you beter than 40 ms -No meaningfull progres what so ever. -No real fun if you are a loner and good luck fidning a good guild or party to play with if you have less than 300-500h of playtime in your hand. -If you dont pay or play thousnds of hours, you wont get any good skin wich the reason you grind in the first place. The reason why i have so much time even tough i hate it becose im willing to give the game a chanc to redeem itself and time and time agine it faild me. Never grew out of losing all my treasure that i collected for hours from others who have infinitly more time playing this and mastering it and the cheaters ofcorse. Very bad game. At one point you are at the top having everything and boom you get swabbed and are suddenly on a calm little island with your ship ready for your next adventure like you werent just thinking of uninstalling. Also please add an Anti-aliasing setting.

If it wasn't for the forced PVP environments, I would recommend this, (Yes, Safer Seas exists. BUT it's a slap to the face for those who actually want PVE) There are very few games out there where you can sail with your friends as a crew, this being one of them. As I said before, I would recommend this if Safer Seas wasn't a punishment for those that could care less about PVP. I do play PVP games- examples being League of Legends, Team Fortress, Battlefront... etc. The difference between those games and this one is the server connection. For example- in League of Legends I get consistently between 20 and 30ms ping being in Central US, But here on Sea of Thieves, I get double that and as i'm sure many people who also play PVP games- High Ping isn't a good environment for PVP. Now as I mentioned before regarding Safer Seas being a slap to the face of a PVE player- they cap the reputation for the PVE factions at 25 (And from what I understand the cap is 500 for them in High Seas) You can't use your Captained ships that you spent, and those Tall Tale rewards of decorations? Yeah, can't use those either because they require a Captained ship. The restrictions are highly unnecessary, with one exception that I understand- less gold from selling loot. That one makes sense, but Safer Seas overall feels like a game demo instead of the full game. Now for the aspect of PVP- it's inevitable if you're playing in High Seas and when you're someone like me who has few friends who play and want to continue grinding out the reputations, People are A-Holes, and always will be, however, there is no excuse for allowing them to call someone a Dumb A** N***** (This racial slur doesn't even apply to me!) because you're scuttling your ship, after they did nothing but chase the you for twenty minutes. Yes, I did fire back, and I boarded them a couple times, set their ship on fire, but it wasn't enough to get them off my rear. Not worth it in my opinion, unless it's *really* on sale, I'll still be playing because I have friends who play sometimes, but overall, I don't recommend unless you are ready to get your butt whipped by the sweats who only play this instead of having a variety in their life. Give US Central servers Rare, 60-80ms ping isn't fun to play a PVP game on.
