I tried to like it.
I've played from 1 through to Nexus.
Rift Apart is bad.
I bought it on sale. £50 or your regional price is a rip off.
If you want a Ratchet and Clank game, pull out your PS2 or PS3 and blow the dust off. They're still brilliant games. I replayed the first one before buying this game and I still love it despite its flaws.
However if you want a game with... no music playing, graphics that look bad on anything but the highest AI setting, bad hair/fur/fabric rendering, forced references "Remember this?", crap motion captured animation straight out of a 3D Sonic game, bad texture mapping, repetitive reminders "Player we were going to go do X mission!" every minute, noticeably low quality programming and UX design, weird jokes like replacing bolts with rubies or energy drink cans, a disabled female protagonist who outshines the clumsy useless male protagonist of the series (why is he in this game?) that you may have the misfortune to find the devs historic arguing on twitter as to her gender identity, costume changes that have the arm cut off for said disabled character but were not adjusted for her frame (shirts create a hole where her hips join because they're wide), terrible dialogue tropes, terrible dialogue in general, talk about baby showers, girly locales such as a nightclub or a cocktail bar, dull backdrops that are often expansive nothingness, art design noticeably influenced by cutsie anime instead of comic superhero Sci-Fi, an air of hyperactivity or ADHD, repetitive animations, poorly thought out box platformer levels, the philosophy of awkward is the new cool, yet another game with wall running, this time implemented fine but you can't avoid enemy's shots, yet another story about a multiverse with redesigned characters, yet another game where you press circle (or B, or your keyboard button of choice) to instantly dodge literally anything and the enemy attacks being designed around this rendering jumping as pointless, weightless jumping that I swear wasn't like this even in the PS3 games, boring weapons, terrain scatter placed floating in the air, out of bounds areas you can just hop over terrain to explore, set dressing that's clipping into other models badly like a dinosaur's tail going directly into rock, a dragon mount that shoots bullets instead of breathing fire, a more boring arena to fight in than even Nexus... every step I take I cannot see the sunshine, just another unfinished product.
I assume this is what was wrong with the 2016 game that I avoided for the same reason any other fan of the series did or wish they had. I hope the terrible revisionist storyline of the Future series was answered by this game, it'd be the cherry on the top if it actually used a dimension plot to do nothing with Ratchet's species but spin wheels. I assume Angela Cross is still considered non-canon and it's because of internal drama.
I think even Tools of Destruction, the unfinished and bad PS3 alleged tech demo, was made with love.
I don't think this was made with love. I think it's unprofessional.
The morbid references to Dan Johnson, a dead employee, are more in your face this time and joined by a morbid reference to Craig Goodman. I don't know what these two artists did for Insomniac and no-one on the internet does either. I'm not sure why Insomniac doesn't want to celebrate its current employees as much today, as that's what the Dan Johnson references were to begin with.
I'm not sure who this is for. The characters are for girls, the gameplay is for boys, the tone is as if the game's worried you're looking at your phone instead of playing, the jokes won't even make your mother laugh, the product is unfinished. Just make a new IP, Insomniac, you clearly don't like this one.
