I love this game however the devs left it in a state where saves would brick after 1-2 play sessions and become completely unplayable without crashes. ASA is ASS too, which genuinely makes me really sad. Especially since I've really gotten my Ark itch back. Really unfortunate. Good game, just unplayable.

I’ve only put in 35 hours so far, but wow... this game is something else. You spawn in with nothing—literally naked—and within five minutes, you're either freezing, starving, getting mauled by something with claws, or all three. It’s chaotic and confusing. But then it starts to click. You start to tame your dinosaurs, build your base, and survive. That feeling is awesome. The world is huge, the dinosaurs are incredible, and the sense of progression is satisfying. ARK is wild, and often unfair—but it’s also really addictive. If you’re even a little into survival games or dinosaurs, it’s absolutely worth trying. Just be ready to lose many hours along the way.

For beginners, this is a completely open world where you have to explore every corner of this world. and also survive, and this is not easy, but I can recommend this game to you, but it is at your discretion, you want to play or not, but I went to destroy raptors))
Coming back to Ark is like coming back to find your house on fire
I haven't played ark in half a decade and recently tried both ASA and ASE. It's June 11th, 2025. Here's my honest observation and review of both as of today. I did NOT know of the recent controversies and just wanted to play a dino game, what I actually returned to is probably the most mismanaged franchise in gaming. I've played games for over 3 decades.

Trying Ark Ascended (Terrible)
I started by not loading up ASE (already owned half of it) as I was recently given ASA as a gift from a friend. I have a mid-range setup with a 30 series card and generally I can play any game with reasonable experiences at 1080p. I'm fine with jank and I'm fine with bugs but me trying ASA coincides with them doing a unreal 5.5 update. I thought Monster Hunter Wilds was an un-optimized POS but ASA took the cake! Stalker 2 looks like a shining jewel by comparison. After a dozen hours of ASA, the bugs are insane! Resources not graphically de-spawning/sticking, AI wonk, FPS is terrible even with upscaling, crashes are frequent. Heck, you can't even mine crystal right now. You literally cannot touch it with a pickaxe. You NEED to use console commands to get it to run well. The Game Pass versions of both ASA/ASE are ports of the xbox versions with various problems and I highly suggest staying away from them as multiplayer between platforms or otherwise just doesn't function properly. The ONLY real benefits I seen of ASA was that it's a great graphical leap forward which means very, very little. Wireless? Couldn't care less. Babies? Doesn't change anything. The structure size and snapping is definitely great, but when everything surrounding these changes is just a coat of very badly running paint, it's hard not to admit that ASA really is a bit of a cash grab. It's not a matter of 'welp you just don't own a 3% marketshare setup to enjoy it like I do!' Or the anecdotes. The MODS I used playing ASA are literally just DUPLICATE RECREATIONS of mods in ASE! There isn't a SINGLE thing I am missing by playing ASE. The only thing I MIGHT miss out on are some particular ASA only maps/mods that I don't feel are essential. The ASA update into 5.5 might be just bad timing, but really I think it's just very showing of how cooked snail/WC are.

Played ASE (Pretty Good)
Boot up ASE, sure it takes more storage space but the thing actually runs respectfully by comparison, which is absolutely insane to say. Yes it's got bugs, the same bugs that ASA doesn't fix. I can't complain and don't feel like I'm missing out on ANY content from ASA. And I double checked by playing it first, in my first couple dozen hours the only thing I actually 'missed' was building snapping and some QOL that honestly just doesn't make it a fundamentally different, or better experience. Other than the literal 2 mods that don't exist for ASE related to wireless items, every other ASA mod I used is just a updated version of an identical mod from ASE, so playing ASE over ASA has mean't me missing basically nothing. I much preferred ASE because it was stable, I don't have to worry about ridiculous updates, don't need a single digit marketshare setup to enjoy/run and It feels like it was made originally by people with a great idea at least whereas ASA just feels like another day milking the cow teet.

Mismanagement/Why/How
Given how popular this franchise was and still is and recently getting back into this, I had to ask "How/Why did this happen?" And I found out so many things that it disgusted me.

https://investor.snail.com/board-member/hai-shi -- This is the CEO of Snail. ARK has made over 1.3 Billion USD. This dude and others decided to take the profits of this franchise, not put it back into it and instead start a business called IndiEV, a flopped, failed Electric Vehicle Company and a few other failed ventures. (It seems all the money is gone.)
Snail is developing Ark Aquatica, a new map/dlc that will brick lots of ASE saves/mods if it actually happens. The trailer they released was AI Slop and quickly they tried to delete it off the internet. The marketing department was totally out of contact with the actual development team and thought this all was OK. Even if this all turns out OK, it reeks of ineptitude and poor management. If Aquatica releases as it likely will, it will brick all of ASE for a time and many mods and saves are going to break. All so Snail can get some more $.
ASA (Ark Survival Ascended) was originally supposed to be a free update/engine rework just like how other successful franchises moving to UE5 have done so. This quickly was changed as ARK 2 (with Vin Diesel) seems to right now be in developmental hell while they simultaneously try to sell us ASA. Why is ASA here today?
ASA is being run with more of it in WC's hands rather than Snail, leading to this whole Aquatica DLC thing of Snail wanting to make another buck on the old version. Often people seem to like WC while saying Snail is the problem, however I think WC is just as scummy as snail. Snail when ASA was coming out forced WC via contracts to finish ASA by certain dates or have to actually PAY millions upon millions from all the future ark products. ASA being the way it is is absolutely NO surprise. But, WC very clearly are complacent.
Spent half a decade not even thinking about this game, came back and in 30 something years I have NEVER seen a franchise get cooked quite like this. ASE is still the superior product and it likely always will be. Here's to hoping aquatica and the ****show it is going to be doesn't permanently ruin this version. Nicer maps and better graphics/baby dinos do NOT make a better game when ASA is such a buggy POS mess. And the only people who tend to defend ASA are console andy's playing versions that don't look any better.

Game can be fun, the later expansions introduce mechanics and lots of currencies that get to be incredibly confusing, though there are mods that roll everything onto the "Island" map, that would be the way to go. ARK is put together using several plug and play Unreal gameplay governing assets that I have seen in other games, like Palworld. (I am certain they use the same temperature and command wheel plugins for example.) The assets, textures, models... I can't understand how this adds up to 438gb on my harddrive... Game works well enough and is fairly fun to play. I just cannot recommend buying anything Studio Wildcard makes. Stay away from this company and these "Developers". Just trust me on this. You can find a youtube deep dive on them if you are really curious. From what I see, it appears they want to live off of ARK for the rest of their professional lives, churning out as much "content" with as little effort as they can get away with to sell DLC's, at one point they re-skinned the game with UE5 and re-released it... Just shit business ethics.

Was a good game, early-game is still fun, but it went downhill hard over time mostly due to poor management, lack of performance improvements, bugs/inconsistencies that never got fixed, and the behavior of the company behind it which I won't elaborate on, just the usual scum-baggery that plagues the industry.

ARK: Survival Evolved drops you into a vast, prehistoric island teeming with dinosaurs, mysterious ruins, and untamed wilderness. Your goal? Survive the elements, hostile creatures, and rival players while building a base, crafting gear, and taming some of the most awe-inspiring beasts ever seen in a video game. At its heart, ARK is about survival through adaptation and mastery of your environment. You gather resources, craft tools and weapons, and build shelters—but the real standout feature is the ability to tame and ride dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Each tamed beast offers unique abilities, from devastating combat power to crucial utility like transportation or resource gathering. The game’s open-world exploration is vast and diverse, featuring different biomes from lush jungles to frozen tundras. The addition of tribes (player groups) introduces social and competitive dynamics, making multiplayer both cooperative and brutal. Though the learning curve is steep, the payoff is immense—imagine charging into battle atop a T-Rex or soaring the skies on a Pteranodon. ARK’s visuals are ambitious, featuring detailed dinosaurs and expansive landscapes that bring the prehistoric world to life. While not flawless, the environments are immersive, and the dynamic weather and day-night cycles add realism. The sound design—roars, footsteps, and ambient nature sounds—further enhances the primal atmosphere. Pros: -Unique dinosaur taming and riding mechanics -Massive, diverse open world to explore -Deep crafting and base-building systems -Engaging multiplayer with tribal alliances and rivalries Cons: -Steep learning curve and sometimes punishing difficulty -Performance issues and bugs, especially on consoles -Some grind-heavy mechanics may feel repetitive ARK: Survival Evolved offers a wild, ambitious survival experience that’s equal parts thrilling and challenging. Its unique dinosaur taming feature sets it apart from other survival games, providing unforgettable moments of exploration and combat. If you’re ready to brave a prehistoric world and command your own dinosaur army, ARK delivers an epic adventure. A raw, untamed survival journey where prehistoric beasts rule the land. Rating: 8/10

While it's one of my favorite games, this game has awful performance, tons of bugs and the publisher only sees the project as a way to rake in money. Don't get attached. Don't waste your money. In addition, all the official servers have been taken out of commission. While I'd still recommend it over the Ascended version, it's not worth getting into.

I only played a few hours of this, and I absolutely fucking hated it. Genuinely one of the most bafflingly bad "games" I’ve ever touched. Bloated to hell in file size, unpolished to the point of parody, and somehow still manages to look like shit and play like shit. It's everything wrong with modern survival games dialed up to 11, janky, ugly, clunky, and absolutely soulless. I tried to give it a fair shot, even jumped in with friends, and still found it completely unplayable. Like... how does a game this fundamentally broken even get sold, let alone gain a community? It’s nerdy in the worst way, not creative or fun or passionate, just messy and grindy and tedious as hell. I don’t care how many dinosaurs you slap on top of it, it still plays like garbage. Maybe there’s some weird charm for people who love pain, but this isn’t it for me. I wouldn’t touch the sequel either. This is the kind of game that makes you rethink your entire Steam library. Avoid.

After over 2,500 hours in Ark, I highly recommend this game. Even though it has it's bugs at times, it is incredibly fun and addicting to play! Whether you enjoy single player or you like to play with friends, this game is suited to both. It can be extremely challenging and frustrating in the early levels of the game, but as you gain access to more engrams and begin to tame new dinos, the game gets more fun! There really is a lot of content to explore and different ways you can play the game. Pros - PvE game-play - Dinosaurs - PvP game-play with friends - Dinosaurs - Fun, yet brutal survival mechanics - Dinosaurs - Huge open world open for exploration - Dinosaurs Cons - Frustrating death loops - Some minor bugs - Troodons The pros heavily outweigh the cons in my opinion and I would highly recommend picking this up while on sale and finding a good unofficial server to play on with others!
