Sekiro differs massively from other Fromsoft games. This difference comes from several factors.
The first and maybe the most outstanding one is combat. In sekiro your combat mechanic depends mostly on deflecting/guarding enemy attacks or attacking enemy attacks to make its attack be deflected/guarded and eventually breaking its posture so that you can get a deathblow. However, there are some powerful enemy attacks like thrust, grab, sweep and lightning which cant be guarded and some of them even cant be deflected so you should dodge/jump/mikiri counter for some not all. Thus, the game at first glance feels a bit hard maybe frustrating as well but the main thing is knowing the every enemy’s attack set and imply your strategy according to it. To elaborate it, you can’t try mikiri counter to a grab attack but a thrust attack. Once you know attack set of the enemy and what you should do to counter, the game becomes so much easier.
Let’s get into building the character. The second and for me the most unenjoyable difference is building your character. The game has lack of variety compared to other Fromsoft games. You wield a katana and have a prosthetic tool. There is no weapon choice other than katana and no armor sets in the game. This result in lack of variety. The only variety comes from prosthetic tools and skills you find/learn through the journey.
Prosthetic Tools: There are 10 prosthetics tools and you can upgrade them to change the usage they have. You can use them for a defensive or offensive purpose according to the boss or enemy you encounter. There is a currency for the prosthetic tools and every prosthetic tools have a cost per usage. This currency is called as “spirit emblem” which can also be required to use advanced combat arts like mortal draw, ninjutsu techniques or spiritfall buffs. You can buy spirit emblems in any sculptor’s idol (bonfire or site of grace) inexchange for sen which is the gold currency of the game, but there is a limit you can carry with you (15 at the beginning, maxed at 20). In addition, you can use ceremonial tanto to refill your spirit emblembs to a max of +5.
Skills: There are 5 skill trees focusing on stuffs like combat, stealth, prosthetic tools etc., and 3 ninjutsu technique skills which can only be used after a backstab. You can use them depending on the playstyle you wanna go for but there is no respec option which let you reallocate those spent skills. This is a con for me because it limits you in a way, ofcourse you can collect all the skills (i learnt all of them in ng+2 for the achievement) but it takes lots of levels which ending you up in grinding. If you wanna have all the skills you better go for ng cycles which is totally okay for me because i like going ng cycles in games but maybe not for people who don’t wanna go for it. So, that means you already got limited variety in the game and making it harder to vary by not giving players a choice to respec.
Vitality/Posture: It is simple, your vitality and posture increases as you collect prayer beads and using per 4 of them. There are total of 40, so you can increase your vitality and posture 10 times.
Attack Power: This one is simple too. When you beat a boss, you get its memory and use it in any sculptor’s idol for permanently gaining attack power. There is also another way to increase your attack power but it comes with a cost and i don’t recommend it if you aim to get all skills in your run. By dragon mask item, you can transmute 5 level of your character to 1 attack power. However, as you go higher in level your exp required to level up go higher as well and you can suffer leveling up to get all the skills in each of 5 skill trees.
Boss Fights: I read in somewhere something like “every enemy is a boss in this game”. The monks carrying twinblade suit this phrase nicely. In addition, some of the miniboss are quite a challenge too. Isshin, the Sword Saint, Owl Father in Hirata Estate are my favourites and worth fighting again and again. Genichiro is the first real challenge and i guess many players learnt the combat mechanic with him. Demon of hatred is the only boss i can believe if you say that is coming from Elden Ring or Dark Souls universe. In a nutshell, we can say bosses are well designed and qualified and i had quite a fun and satisfaction during fighting.
In conclusion, it is a must play if you like Fromsoft games by acknowledging it is a different one. Maybe you can like it more or less, it all depends on preferences of the person and there is no need for arguing. Only con for me is lack of variety in building the character. This and lack of multiplayer experience may lead a decrease in total play hours compared to the other Fromsoft games. The combat is just fine, satisfying and feels so smooth after you master it.
My recommendation rate is 9/10.

Did you know Sekiro means "One-armed Wolf"?
Anyway, this is one of the best games I've ever played. You have already heard everyhting there is to hear about the game.
The good

Amazing gameplay. All of it.

Parry mechanics. The most satistying mechanic in all of gaming.

Enemy variety

The bad

Nothing. I guess you could say it's difficult to get into because of the high skill floor for even the most basic enemies, but I love that!
I didn't find it too difficult personally, but I guess if you come from dark souls it will be very different from what you're used to, so it may add to the challenge if you instincivley dodge isntead of parry.
This is a perfect 10/10 for me, and might be my favorite game of all time.

Sekiro is a perfect action game and my favorite game of all time. I have something like 400 hours on PlayStation and was so happy to buy it again for Steam Deck.
It's the best parry game, with adaptive animations and a genius posture system. It's the best ninja game, with satisfying stealth and stylish attacks. It has the best boss fights, incredibly variable and thrilling to master. It has a compelling story, subtle and tragic and beautiful in all the right places. It pays homage to great Japanese films, from Kurosawa to Princess Mononoke. It digs into themes about Shinto, Buddhism, greed, hatred, and parenthood, often through gameplay itself. It looks gorgeous thanks to a strong art style, striking composition, an evolving color palette, and meaningful particle effects.
I can't say enough about the combat... It is a masterpiece of mastery, an immensely satisfying network of tight systems that shine brighter and brighter the more time and attention you give them. I'm so glad this game has inspired many others since 2019, but honestly nothing comes close to how tight, purposeful, and razor sharp Sekiro feels to play.
Nice to know it takes me 11 hours to do everything I like in one playthrough, which is absolutely everything except the Headless. Hate those guys.
Owl Father is my favorite boss fight ever, and Sword Saint Isshin is a perfect final boss. Sekiro is a pinnacle that I hope continues to find its loving audience for decades to come.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an absolute masterpiece! From the breathtaking visuals to the incredibly precise combat system, every aspect of this game is polished to perfection. The challenge is intense but fair, pushing you to improve with every encounter—though I’m pretty sure my controller now has permanent claw marks from all the death grips. The world is rich with lore, and the level design is nothing short of brilliant. The feeling of finally defeating a tough boss after countless attempts is unmatched, though I may have developed a slight twitch from yelling "Just one more try!" at 3 a.m. If you enjoy action games with depth, a rewarding sense of accomplishment, and the occasional urge to hug your TV in frustration, Sekiro is a must-play. FromSoftware has outdone themselves yet again—though I’m convinced they enjoy watching us suffer just a little too much.

The best swordplay in any video game. Deep mastery mechanics of deflection makes deathblows and each kill so much more satisfying. The story is amazing and the lore is deep (sometimes overwhelmingly so). So far even though the game is difficult its very fun, rewarding and would play more.

I'm gonna be real with you guys. I have tried SO hard to like this game, but I just don't get it. I am constantly lost, not fun lost like in Elden Ring where you find an underground rotten lake with unique items, but I need to search up a YT guide lost. And the combat... I see how so many people like it, and I am glad that it appeals to people, but it doesn't click for me. Trying the same unskippable boss for 30 minutes for an entire week isn't fun to me. And I really, REALLY tried!!! I want to love this game, but I can't.

it took me six tries over the course of like 5 years to start liking this game, but after that sixth try i absolutely love it.
after 100% completion i can confidently say this is one of the greatest games i've ever played.
once you unlearn everything the souls series taught you previously, and force yourself over the colossal learning curve, you'll realise this game isn't that hard, but very fun.

absolutely phenomenal game. i've been a fan of fromsoftware titles since 2014 starting with Dark Souls 1 and i knew i would love this game, i just never got around to buying until now.
it's sad that i let this game go for so long because unfortunately i did know just about everything going into it because i couldn't help myself looking up content on the game for years prior to playing it.
in just over 30 hours i did completed the game for the first time with the "Return" ending (yes i used a guide lol) and i plan on getting the rest of the endings and all the achievements.
100% you owe it to yourself as a GAMER to play this game its a perfect experience all throughout.

When you enter a bosses arena at first, you will probably think that you will never beat the boss; but then you actually do it and the feeling is just magnificent. All the games areas are very detailed and there are lots of thrilling battles, lots of places to explore and you could probably never get bored of this game. Must recommend. :)

This game can be described with one word: FRUSTRATION
Despite a rough start I finished and deeply loved all from software souls, but I cannot even continue this game.
there is no strategy, no builds, Bosses and mini-bosses have only one intended way to kill them, otherwise you cannot even scratch them, battles in the end are like a rythmn game.
shooting enemies can see and kill you precisely from miles away.
at the second main boss i just had enough and uninstalled

one of the best games I've ever replayed for the tenth time, my favorite mechanic is the one when on NG+3 bosses are afraid to battle you and decide not to attack nor deflect, taking it all like good obedient boys.

Sekiro is like a fine drink that you find yourself coming back to just to get a buzz from its great flowing dance-like combat that makes you feel like a real sword saint once you have mastered its timing and pace. This is the only souls-like game that I have achieved every achievement by just wanting to play more and more of it. The story is good but not entirely ground breaking. Where this game shines is its combat and man what a ride. I started out terrible dying to a boss that I later found out would be easier if I had progressed a bit more in the story. Me being stubborn I persevered through the deaths and the dieing a second time over and over. That mechanic alone of having you revive with little health and just a dream is one that keeps you coming back because you got the boss down to 3 hits only to realize that was his/her's first phase. It's hard to describe the feeling once you've mastered an enemies move timings and the speed at which you can defeat these enemies once you do. Watching as you learn to master deflecting attacks that seemed so fast and un-reactable before to defeating the boss in a minute or less after downloading their move set is just....chefs kiss. There is replayability in multiple endings to achieve but I did it just for the pure love of mastering a boss fight and feeling like a badass when enemies who once grounded me to a pulp suddenly feel like they were never a match for a sword saint such as my wolf.

Sadly I didn't like the game, I thought I would love it since it's a story of a Shinobi but, the game is lacking guidance to the new player, I tried the game for 5 hours and for me, it's respectable time to test a game, and sadly I couldn't refund the game, and now it will be sitting in my steam library, it doesn't mean the game is bad, I just didn't find it fitting for me.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019) was a significant departure from the usual formula, focusing more on pure action and precision rather than RPG elements. Set in a fantastical version of feudal Japan, players took on the role of Wolf, a shinobi seeking vengeance. The gameplay centered on perfectly timed parries and breaking enemy posture rather than whittling down health bars. This shift from traditional Souls mechanics polarized fans, but the intense focus on mastering combat made Sekiro a standout title. Its storytelling was also more direct, following a defined protagonist rather than a nameless, hollow character.

I used to be hesitant about playing games like this, but Sekiro has become one of the best games I have ever played. Although it feels extremely difficult at first, once you get used to it, the experience becomes truly enjoyable. The urge to quit is strong, but I highly recommend not giving up bcs once you grasp the mechanics, the sense of satisfaction is incredible.
Sekiro was my first souls-like game. At first I was exhausted from fighting bosses, getting stuck on some of them, and struggling to progress. But over time I realized that the real battle wasnt against the bosses. It was against myself. The game forces you to truly master its mechanics, and once you do, the reward is immense. This realization made the game far more meaningful to me because Sekiro is not just an action game it is, in a way, a rhythm game. Every boss has a unique combat rhythm and style. You cant just mash buttons and expect to win, you have to move in sync with the games tempo. This is why every successful deflect feels like a small victory in itself.
Boss fights are truly adrenaline pumping. You can physically feel your heart rate increasing while fighting bosses. But at the same time, it teaches you to stay calm, train yourself, and think strategically. The game forces you to rely not just on your reflexes but also on your mental discipline.
The world of Sekiro is captivating the atmosphere and design are incredibly well crafted. Shinobi Prosthetic offers various gameplay options, but the game ultimately encourages you to stay loyal to your sword, which enhances its overall philosophy. Unlike rpgs that allow you to switch builds and create overpowered characters, Sekiro demands mastery of a single combat style. If it allowed cheesy builds to trivialize boss fights, it would undermine its core philosophy. The way Shinobi Prosthetic adds variety without being overpowered is a remarkable design choice.
That being said, I cant ignore the games flaws. The camera controls are really frustrating. Sometimes, even when I have locked onto a boss, the lock randomly breaks, and by the time I find the boss on screen again, I am already dead. This becomes especially problem in fast paced fights against highly aggressive bosses.
Additionally the AI occasionally breaks immersion. For example, I can kill an enemy right next to another npc, and they wont even react. Similarly, if a mini boss spots me, I can simply run away, wait for about 20 seconds, and they completely forget I was ever there allowing me to sneak up and take one of their health bars with ease. A more advanced AI system would have made the game not only harder but also more immersive and rewarding.
Btw I highly recommend playing Sekiro with a controller. The sheer satisfaction of performing a deflect, followed by an execution... It’s hard to put into words how something purely visual and auditory can feel so rewarding, but you will understand once you experience it.
I have only played for 25 hours so far. I hope I can finish it.

What's good:
Second to second combat. Each fight and action feels meaningful while you're in combat. It's probably what makes it distinct to any other souls-borne game. You're not mindlessly running around one-shotting everything you come across like you would in Elden Ring and Dark Souls (unless you're a stealthy boy).
Art style. The art style is by far the best in any of FromSoft's titles. I did not appreciate the desaturated environment in Bloodborne, and this game is a nice contrast to it. The closest FromSoft has come to the art in Sekiro is Elden Ring.
Most boss fights. Most of the boss fights work quite good. I like that the mini bosses are designed to teach a certain mechanic so you're prepared to use the mechanics in real boss fights. More on the bad boss fights later.
relatively linear progression + compact map design. I missed the linear progression in Souls-Borne games after playing Elden Ring. Sekrio has a clear sense of progression. I also appreciate the compact map design. I like to explore the entire map before moving on, and when I played Elden Ring this would take me 100 hours each playthrough, mainly because the map was so damn big I spent most of the time going from one location to another. I spent at most 2 hours in each area in Sekiro thanks to the compact map. It appears to respect my time more than Elden Ring.
What's bad:
The real boss fight; the camera. Dark Souls 1 had a better camera layout than Sekiro, and that came out years before. There's no settings to free the camera movement so it doesn't move while the player moves. Fights done in buildings are especially miserable because of how the camera interacts with walls. You cannot appreciate boss fights larger than a human because of how close the game is to the player (looking at Demon of Hatred in particular). The camera single-handedly holds Sekiro back from being a masterpiece.
Blazing Bull and Demon of Hatred boss fights. The Blazing Bull fight was simply annoying. I had to fight it without knowing about the firecrackers Shinobi tool, and I grew frustrated enough that I just looked up a guide on how to beat it, and I was really annoyed when I learned you're meant to parry its charging attack. A skinny Shinobi with a sword is supposed to parry a megaton bull charging towards you. How does that make any sense? For the Demon of Hatred fight, I found it boring. All you do is run up to its left leg and then behind it and start swinging. In its second phase it gains an attack that I found impossible to dodge, unless I'm supposed to run further away from the boss, which in that case makes the fight even more boring. The boss spams the classic butt slam attack that the asylum demons in Dark Souls 1 do all the time. The only fun I had with the fight was cheesing it to commit suicide and it thanking me for aiding in the process.
Bait and switch final boss fight. Sekiro set up a clear three-parter to the Genichiro Ashina boss. You fight him in the beginning of the game and lose, you fight him about 33% through the game and win, but for the final boss fight you kill him with ease and then fight some old dude. I wouldn't mind it as much if the old dude had similar attack patterns to Genichiro, but it's completely different except for a single jump attack. Genichiro Ashina was easily the best boss in the game and I would've liked to fight him one last time where he has 3-4 phases and each phase he gains new attack patterns.
The Shinobi: Owl boss fight could have been much more. This boss fight was way too easy for where you're at in the game. I thought it interesting how the boss used smoke bombs and firecrackers on you, but everything the boss did is easily avoidable and he hardly makes an effort to profit on your blunders. The boss was too passive.
Semi-clunky movement. This is a nitpick but was annoying to deal with in my playthrough. If you're close to a ledge, the game will sometimes, but not all the time, stop you from falling off. So if you're running away from a mob of enemies and you want to fall down, you can't, and you're stuck with the enemies unable to move. Another movement problem is the input lag when performing a running jump. There's a good half second delay between you pressing the button and the player actually jumping. If you jump without running it's instant, so I see no reason for it to be different while running. It only serves to annoy the player.
To conclude:
Despite its problems, the game is a 9/10. The majority of the time you'd spend playing the game will be enjoyable, and you do grow used to the camera and movement after a while. The game respects your time and intelligence with its map design and its combat mechanics. Other than a select few bosses, the boss fights were engaging and meaningful, and by far some of the best that FromSoftware has ever made. If you like saturated environments, you'll like exploring the many beautiful areas this game has to offer.

This is the only game where you don't win by leveling up your character--You win by leveling up yourself.

I just started my journey into souls games. Started with Elden Ring. Loved it so much I got the DLC and beat that too. Waited awhile to play this because I love Japanese themed stuff but I was nervous to play this heard it was the hardest one. It is pretty difficult but still very doable even if you aren't a "Chad". Although, I used FightningCowboy's guide on youtube which definetly helps lol.
Worth getting imo. I love the art style and the combat is very engaging and satisfying. Deathblows feel amazing and you just feel like a bad ass shinobi. Only 11 hours in but I am killing it and finding myself wanting to come back and put a few hours in each day.
p.s not to spoil anything but the last bosses are a complete turn up in difficulty, be prepared for tries upon tries.

In my opinion this is the best souls game. The combat is one of the most satisfying things you will experience in gaming. The bosses are mostly great, tho some of them can be a bit boring and frustrating, and the option to always fight them again is something other souls games lack. This game also has the most satisfying 100% out of any souls game. I 100% recommend getting it, especially on sale.

Played this after the Dark Souls games and enjoyed it a lot more. It is now my favourite Fromsoft game so far. The Dark Souls theme and style is usually up my alley, but something in those games didn't fully resonate with me the way this game did.
The characters seemed more... real somehow, the story felt purposeful and interesting, and the combat (though definitely difficult with quite a learning curve and focus on a certain fighting style), was very satisfying.
I enjoyed traversing the world and story and the fighting was also fun even when it took a few (and occasionally very many) tries to get the hang of something.

-Sekiro is defined by its riveting, challenging, and ultimately highly rewarding gameplay.
-Stemming from simplicity but giving a wide variety of different combat options, few games come close to matching the exhilarating rush that Sekiro’s best moments provide.
-Exploring its atmospherically engrossing levels is a treat, from a visual, musical, and atmospheric standpoint. Even if exploration and character storylines are sometimes hampered by Dragonrot, repeatedly severing the immortality of bosses with brutal “Shinobi Executions” and discovering the ritual secrets of eternal life offers a captivating experience that stands out as one of FromSoftware’s best and most distinctive titles.
-The game’s post-launch content, though limited in scope, keeps players coming back for more, offering New Game+ modes and additional challenges that add to its already considerable replay value.
-THE REAL GIT GUD GAME

For a long time this game left a bitter taste in my mouth. People kept saying "it'll just click" and I would get more and more frustrated because it just wouldn't...
And then it just clicked.

It took me much longer to get it then it did others, too many hours on dark souls 3 seared some nasty habits into my brain. So f*ck it, forget it all, throw it all away and burn it down... kinda? but also don't, there's some useful stuff in that dark souls experience. And to be fair the first area of the game is bad, both as a tutorial and in general.
This game requires patience, but not 'dark souls patience'. it requires Sekiro Patience ®. Rather than backing off and closing in, waiting for attack openings, baiting out attacks, etc, i.e: the normal dark souls gaming loop, Sekiro is much more about "Tempo". While there are times when you'll be weaving in and out or even baiting patterns, the gameplay is more so defined by constant, measured pressure. You should be trying to close the distance and consistently apply pressure to the boss: constantly attacking and parrying, anything to raise the posture bar. But not frantically. Rather at a consistent, measured pace, almost like a metronome. All while watching the boss for those certain attacks that break the pattern.
But to be honest this stuff is easy, its the bosses that break this play pattern that'll really test your patience, that's when you'll need that dark souls experience.

Gave the game 100 hours. Completed NG+ without Charm and with Demon Bell. The combat is absolutely atrocious. I don't see how anyone can praise it. You're not asked to be creative; you're asked to do exactly what the game expects from you. Which in turn makes the game extremely hard when you try to be creative, and extremely easy (yes, actually easy) when you play as the game expects.
Everything else about the game is near perfect. Great japanese voice acting, great atmosphere, great world building, great graphical design, and even a nice variety of enemies (tho the combat is completely puke worthy). If I could, I would just let an AI play the combat, so I could enjoy the rest of the game.
For a game that has alot of its focus combat mechanics, I can not give this game a thumbs up. The combat is made for people that enjoy playing on other people's exact rules. If you have a robot, AI or a half a brain friend that can play the combat for you, then I absolutely can recommend the game. Otherwise play the DS series or ER.

Great game, highly recommend. The game is hard but not like impossible (for reference, it took me over 45 hours to complete my 1st playthrough). If you're stuck at some boss, take a break and try again (maybe look for some guide if you really want to beat the boss) and I think you'll get it, I don't know why but i works for me most of the time and after defeating a boss, I promise you, it is gonna be the best feeling ever. Finishing the game make me feel like I had accomplished something in life so if you like challenges, consider this game.

Absolute masterpiece, I played this after finishing Elden Ring and Bloodborne and it's just another incredible work of art. Extremely challenging and satisfying, sometimes frustrating and painful but always fair. One of my favourite games ever without a doubt.

As a player who is somewhat new to Souls games, this is one of my favorite games of all time. I love how challenging the game is, as well as the different NPCs and their backstories. 10/10, will play again

It is so hard I can't even beat the first boss without having to die more than 2 times, the game graphic is really good and it required a lot of skill

Easy to learn, difficult to master, and once you do, it is really satisfactory.

Hesitation is defeat... arguably one of the greatest PvE combat systems ever designed. The only negative is how relatively short the game is compared to other souls titles, but refighting bosses never gets old with how good the combat is.

Probably the most difficult and rewarding game I've ever played. Lots of upgrades to be had.

unlearn what u know from dark souls, it will only hold u back. dont dodge and retreat, be hyper aggressive and parry. this is a giant departure from what has been established in dark souls/elden ring so expect a different experience. they have the same "git gud" learning curve but in terms of combat and traversal they r a world apart. its fromsoftware so u know what to expect i.e. a dope ass game with dummy thicc lore and just the most creamy gameplay. chefs kiss
