great concept for a game and i loved the intersection between the characters' stories. although i don't get the point of interacting in dialogue that only gives you the option to choose one thing...

I’ve been kept inside so long I’ve lost sight of right and wrong When you left an open door I couldn’t help but explore So I took off with no plan Thinking I could find a friend Saying hi and shaking hands I hope this moment never ends It feels so good out on the road and on my own Waking up no strings attached, no looking back From ocean waves to desert skies and summer nights I know the road is my home That’s what it feels like to be free Chasing butterflies and floating on the breeze Got no doors need no keys Another world to be seen... Awesome game

First of all I ve played more than 3 hours (nearly finished the game), but for some reason steam is bugged. With that out of the way, this game is much different from what i expected. All the trailers and gameplay footage show a roadtrip drifter-esque adventure with many different things happening along the way but in reality it is a "Choose between Voting or Recolution" Simulator (for lack of a better term). The graphics are ok, nothing special, even though most of the characters dont move their mouths at all when they are speaking, or even if they move it it looks completely unrealistic. I dont know the budget of this game but Ive heard it was government funded, and it shows in its core and the story. The story explores some great themes, such as freedom(physical and political), free roaming and exploring the nature, but it is cut short from all the Political stuff. Again, this game is HEAVILY POLITICAL. It forces you to choose between choices that dont really seem to impact the world around you or your relationship with the characters. It feels more like a giant poll, asking the player about their political views and beliefs. Maybe I am still trying to finish the game and havent given up on it already because I am playing it right after "Papers, Please" which is a masterpiece and i highly recommend. If you want to experience the injustice and the opression of a regime and the lust for freedom, "Papers,Please" for example does it right. NOT THIS GAME! And finally, the characters... All of them apart from Stan and Mitch (and them too sometimes) are actually pretty boring, one dimensional and downright terrible people. And the one guy the game tries to pass as a terrible person and a serial killer, Jarod, is so over the top diabolical and bad and evil that it isnt even slightly believable. He is just irritating and time consuming. And lastly, one of my biggest issues was the inconsistency in the character interactions. You are supposed to be playing the part of many different teens that all encounter the main characters of the game throughout their journey to the border. All of these kids share nothing in common, as far as knowledge goes, and dont know the main characters before hand. But after a certain point in the game, the game just completely forgets about this fact and know your teen knows as much as YOU, the player, do. It doesnt make sense. For example, John gets in on of the teen's car and the teen immediately knows his name and that he is one of the Brigades, even though they never met. And John, like the other Brigades or most of the characters for that matter, has ZERO problem divulging incriminating information that he is part of a "terrorist" group. The game builds its narrative around the fact that somehow the player must have full control over the most important decisions in the story, but the way it delivers this makes no sense. A serial killer who kills hitchhiking teens would never spare one just because they took a random liking in them, a "terrorist" leader would never leave the decision of his group's next actions to a kid he just met 5 minutes ago! They tried, but they failed in many aspects of it. I wiil keep playing in order to finish this, and I hope that my choices have actual consequences and change the landscape of the story. But i kinda doubt it... At least the music is cool I guess...

Its a fun, thought provoking game which I really enjoyed. It's not "WOKE" like a lot of people would try to get you to believe, but filled with Gen Z and Millennial idioms. Which as a Gen Xer, with both of the afore mentioned generations as childern, I had no issues with. Give it a try, I think you'll enjoy it

There really isn't much to like about this game. It's not fun, it's not interesting or innovative in any way, the voice acting and writing are not good, and the story itself is pretty much nothing at all.

This game is a major love/hate situation. Pros: The idea behind taking a "random" road trip and finding new areas, interactions and way to move forward is awesome! The graphic style is beautiful and run very very well on older equipment. Finding collectibles and power-ups that you can take into NG+ is something I wish a lot more games did. Cons: It is described as a "Choices matter" / "Choose your path" game but you are railroaded hardcore into picking 1 of 3 options in damn near every point that boils down to Options 1 and 2 are to be on one side of the "Good Guys" or a third option that is supposed to be the "I don't wanna get involved" option but still agrees with options 1 and 2. This destroys any feeling of choice and takes a game that could of been a 10/10 road trip simulator and turns it into a not recommended "Agree with my politics at all cost" simulator. I got this game on sale for 5 bucks and at that price point I still feel it was worth for the small part of the game that wasn't trying to force a political view down my throat and was the goofy and entertaining road trip portions. Stan and Mitch are some of the best characters I have seen in a game! tl;dr Buy on a major sale and just enjoy the good bits poking through all the misleading "Choose your own adventure"

I was positively surprised by this game. Stumbled upon it not expecting much but wow. Loved every second of it, from the characters to the graphics and especially the soundtrack. Cannot recommend enough 10/10 experience.

Road 96 is a surprisingly deep and immersive narrative experience. The character development is well-crafted, and despite being a linear game at heart, it offers a remarkable sense of freedom through branching choices and randomized story encounters. That unpredictability truly captures the spirit of a road trip. While later playthroughs are required to fully unlock all storylines and collectibles—something that can feel a bit repetitive—the emotional impact remains strong. At times, the story echoed my own country and personal experiences. It was bittersweet, even painful, but I’m grateful a game like this exists to let us imagine what it means to break free in a dystopian world.

Very realistic US politics simulator. None of the MCs are believable. A teenager would never be able to leave their room, regardless of any tyranny, though this game does play before I was even born, so I might be wrong. 9/10 would leave the country again.

I actually really enjoyed this game! Not that I was expecting it to be bad or anything, I just enjoyed it even more than I anticipated! Really satisfying character development and interactions, and seems like there is a decent amount of replay-ability. Would definitely recommend picking this game up, and it would be a no-brainer if it is on sale!

This game was not what I was expecting but 100% only in the good way. The story, without any spoilers, is just amazing! This game is really all about "the people you meet along the way". If you are not sure whether you should buy this game or not and you like games that are more story driven, then this is definitely a game for you.

Road 96 is a brilliant game! The art style is colorful and unique, not super realistic but still very good. The music is amazing too, it really sets the mood. The game mixes exploring, talking, making choices, and doing little mini-games. It’s not about shooting or fighting it’s more about the journey and the choices you make. Best part about it is each playthru is different so every time you play your road trip feels new

Casual storytelling done right. The interconnecting narratives from teen to teen that you play are done right but perhaps the biggest plus for me is the soundtrack. The ambient use of sound and the music really hook you into the story. I find myself just sitting there listening to the songs. It's a relatively short game but very much worth it in my opinion

I would have never thought that I'd like this game this much. Let me start off with the looks: this indie, cartoony setting was perfect for the road trip vibe, don't think I could imagine the game in any other way. The whole plot was very gripping and I liked the fact that you are handed control of different teens during the story, you get to see a whole different road trip within the same playthrough. Talking about playthrough, the devs hit the sweetspot in my opinion with the duration of the story. I also loved that you are introduced to a small handful of characters from whom you get to know more and more with each part of the road trip and towards the end you begin to understand what exactly is going on and why, what are the motives of these people and their complete backgrounds. To say the least, they did a wonderful job with the storytelling. In this game you are mostly in conversation with people and the whole action is driven by what you choose to say in these situations and what path you select. Now, I don't have insight on how much these choices determine your playthrough, but there are about 6 dillemas which can greatly change the whole story. Regardless of the impact, I also enjoyed these convos, didn't find them dull or anything, but I believe the significant choices do have a sizeable impact. As of writing this review I've only done one playthrough, but I can see how the next time the whole story could go a different way, and that's the charm in this game, every time it's a bit different. This game is truly a hidden gem. I didn't even really understand what it is about while I was browing in the store, I just put it on my wishlist. But let me just say that it was a lot more than I'd expected. I always wait for games to go on a discount, but even at full price, I would say this is worth it. Strongly recommend!

Road 96 is a powerful, emotional journey driven by choice. The stylized graphics create a vivid, immersive world, and the soundtrack perfectly captures the mood of freedom and uncertainty. Each character you meet is deeply written, adding layers to the story. The gameplay blends exploration, narrative, and decision-making seamlessly. Every choice shapes your path, making each playthrough feel unique and deeply personal.

Beautiful game. Not realistic, but comfortable and intriguing graphics paired with an incredible evolving story, where everything that happens is controllable by you, and the choices you make along the way. Every transition feels seamless, and there are so many levels that you won't even encounter all of them on your first playthrough. Completed the game 100% and would do it all over again.

Wish I could give a "maybe" rating review. Road 96 is a game with its heart in the right place, but its feet are kind of tripping over themselves on the way to the finish line. The idea is great: a procedurally generated road trip across a dystopian country, meeting quirky characters, making choices, and shaping your own story. And at first, it really feels like something special. The soundtrack is fantastic, the visuals have a unique style, and some story beats do land emotionally. But the novelty wears off quicker than you'd hope. The procedural aspect ends up making many encounters feel repetitive, and characters you’re supposed to bond with start blurring together across runs. By the third or fourth trip, it starts feeling more like a loop than a journey. Dialogue can be hit or miss, some emotional moments feel unearned, and while the game clearly wants to say something meaningful about politics and rebellion, it sometimes ends up feeling like a very stylish after-school special. It’s not bad—it’s just uneven. Worth checking out if you’re in the mood for a stylish indie with a road-trip vibe, but temper your expectations.

Rating: 8/10 Road 96 is a unique and emotional indie adventure that offers a different experience with every playthrough. One of the standout features of the game is its amazing soundtrack — the music truly elevates the atmosphere and perfectly matches the emotional tone of each scene. The graphics are beautiful, with a stylized art direction that makes the journey across the game's landscapes a visual treat. The environments are very well-designed, immersing you in the world and making each stop on the road feel meaningful. Overall, it's a memorable experience that balances storytelling, atmosphere, and replayability. Highly recommended for fans of narrative-driven games.

This is my favourite game ever. I love the story and the fact that you can get different endings depending on your choices. The atmosphere, music, and characters are all amazing. I’d honestly recommend everyone to play it at least once. There are a few things that feel a bit unfinished though. For example, in the mission with Sonya called "Burnin" you play those little mini games like ice hockey and kicking the ball at cans, and in the end you get a golden badge. It feels like it should lead to something, like maybe getting into Tyrak’s party or getting money or food, but it doesn’t really go anywhere.

This game has a lighting/shader bug that has apparently been a problem for three years and it's obvious they are not going to fix it, making it too dark to see anything at night and not just the campfire scene so unless you don't mind talking to silhouettes of people then this game is for you

Ill be honest. The graphics are crap. If that is something you care about, do not play. If, however, you can get over that, then this game is astounding. Each choice makes an impact, and everything is random. The amount of ways things can go makes this game so replayable.

Wow Road 96 is such a great experience I never had before. You basically play as multiple kids/refuguees on the run to reach a border and then trying to pass it. The challenge here is to decide how you reach your destination. Should I get money to take a taxi, ask a driver to take me there or just continue to walk? This is makes it very enjoyable to interact with the world and npc's. But when you finally reach the border it gets challenging, especially if your arrived with nothing. The character itself you're playing, has no personality but instead the people you meet... and that's where the story shines. On your journey you meet multiple characters in different situations. Through the interactions and talks you understand more and more who they are, their motivations, their relations to the other characters and generally what is going on. This makes the lore very detailed and avoids (mostly) a black and white plot, which made me totally hooked to play further and learn more about these characters. Also the game does a really good job to not make these moments unscripted. It felt more like that I found this story pieces by accident during my journey which makes the world soooo alive. I really felt that I was someone who is on a journey while triying to survive and co-living the games story... just awesome. That's why I think Road 96 is an absolute masterpiece.

Truly a masterpiece, you can tell the creators put alot of love into each and every detail of this game, make your decisions, or don't, about the political state of this video game, Tyrak or Florres, or, no opinion at all, either way, you play as multiple teens, trying to get to the border, you meet some interesting people along your travels, and you slowly start to learn more and more about them, through each teen that you play with, some of the teens you play might not make it, and some will, either way, it's a journey everyone should at least begin, I do challenge you to complete this game though, you will start to grow opinions about people, the more you learn about peoples past the more they could help you to the border. This game is by far 100% a must play, storylines are 12/10, the music 100/10, the change of pace from regular video games is so pleasant, and can be scary at times, your actions make an impact as well. **Possible spoiler... watch out for the taxi driver, you wanna know more about him but he doesn't make it easy
