lots of reviews bashing Gearbox for the new EULA update, which is fair, but this is entirely Take Two's fault from what ive researched
I doubt gearbox would've taken 3 steps forward by listening to community feedback and getting big creators to beta test their new DLC so it actually is a proper game, only to take 20 steps back by dropping this only AFTER being bought out by Take Two.
Not saying Gearbox is entirely clean, they did have to finalize the agreement to be bought by Take Two after all, but the recent anger should be focused toward the parent company with more corporate suits that want every penny they can suck out of you and not the development studio, since i doubt they were able to stop this sudden change if they wanted to.
anyways:
-new terms saying modding and fucking **VPNs** are banned?????
-and an arbitration clause agreement for most areas of the world?
-AND spyware levels of data gathering?
Avoid literally anything Take Two has its hands on until a change is made, if one gets made at all. Every time this game gets bought (directly or indirectly) by a larger company it just suffers a terrible fate. Love this game but god damn it just cant stop getting worse after we are given the slightest bit of hope.

Excellent game, horrible TOS
I did purchase the game a while ago, so I am left with no options but to agree to the updated EULA (which is absurd in itself). However, I would recommend to outright avoid any game published by take two interactive if you give even an iota of importance to your privacy.
Avoid at all costs

Copied this over from another comment on the DLC, but since the TOS were also updated for the main game, I think everyone should know about this:

No, Gearbox games aren't stealing your nudes and selling them to big corpos, and no, they're not gonna take "Huntress Inflation Mod V2" away from you. Even if you choose to believe that, review-bombing games DOES NOT HELP.
I don't get the hate for the new 2nd DLC updates, they feel as vanilla as they could be and even if you disagree, the new items and survivor reworks are pretty fun. Not worth buying at full price but still pretty good.
As for the original game, it's a around a 9/10 for me. Really fun, doesn't feel too unfair or too easy, each character has a very distinct style, i love the way maps and items were executed and the soundtrack is phenomenal. One of those games worth playing for a long time, super unique in all fronts.

That's insane that dlcs costs two times more than a base game. RoR2 is a masterpiece but these dlcs price is unreal compared to included content and of course new spyware bullshit eula. I miss my old RoR2.

You should buy Risk of Rain 2 because it delivers one of the most addictive and rewarding gameplay loops in the rogue like genre. With fast-paced third-person shooter mechanics, a massive variety of stackable items that create chaotic and powerful synergies, and a unique scaling difficulty system that constantly challenges you, the game never feels the same twice. Its diverse cast of playable characters each offer distinct play styles, keeping the experience fresh across dozens if not hundreds of runs. Whether you're playing solo or with friends, the thrill of starting weak and gradually transforming into an unstoppable force is incredibly satisfying. Combined with a stunning soundtrack, stylish visuals, and strong replay ability for its price, Risk of Rain 2 is a must-play for fans of action games, loot-based progression, and cooperative chaos.

Used to be a great game, hell, even a great series. Gearbox got greedier and started dropping the ball. Also this game is now unofficial spyware, and has been downgraded to the console equivalent. It runs worse and feels sloppy now. I waited way too long for any information on the newest dlc as well, (seekers of the storm) it looks really lackluster to be as over-hyped for what it is.
If you can get the game for less than 5 bucks, go for it I guess, especially if you use services like epic games, because you definitely don't care where your information goes to in that case. ~shrug

Maybe at some point, I'd've recommended this. As of now, with the absolute trash fire of a EULA and ToS, this game is NOT worth playing. If you want a decent fast-paced roguelike shooter, go check out Crab Champions or some such.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
Risk of Rain 2 is one of those rare sequels that not only expands on its predecessor’s formula but completely redefines it—trading the original’s 2D pixel-art side-scrolling for a fully realized 3D world, without losing the soul of what made it great.
✅ What Works
1. Addictive Gameplay Loop:
The core gameplay is tight, fast, and highly replayable. You start off underpowered and slowly build into a godlike machine—provided you survive long enough. The longer you play, the harder the game gets, and this tension keeps every run thrilling.
2. Variety and Synergy:
With a growing roster of unique characters (like the agile Huntress, tanky MUL-T, or the newly added Railgunner), there's no shortage of playstyles. The loot system encourages experimentation—stacking items leads to game-breaking synergies or hilarious chaos.
3. Co-op Madness:
Risk of Rain 2 shines in multiplayer. With up to four players, it becomes a coordinated dance of dodging, looting, and unleashing carnage. It's chaotic, but in the best possible way.
4. Killer Soundtrack:
Chris Christodoulou returns with a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that dynamically responds to the intensity of gameplay. It elevates the experience and cements the atmosphere.
❌ What Could Be Better
1. Steep Learning Curve:
The game doesn't hold your hand. New players may struggle with understanding items, characters, or how to even survive past the first few levels. Some tutorials or better onboarding would help.
2. RNG Dependency:
Like most roguelikes, your success often depends on the items you find. While it adds variety, some runs can feel doomed by bad luck more than poor play.
3. UI and Clarity Issues:
In the heat of battle, especially late-game, the screen gets overwhelmingly cluttered. Visual clarity can suffer, making it hard to track your character or projectiles.
Final Thoughts
Risk of Rain 2 is an incredibly rewarding experience for those who stick with it. Whether you’re a solo adventurer or a co-op chaos junkie, its blend of rogue-lite tension, satisfying combat, and evolving strategy make it a standout in the genre. It’s not perfect, but it’s a blast—and it only gets better with each run.
Recommended for: Fans of roguelikes, action RPGs, and players who enjoy challenge and experimentation.

It's very rare you find a game like this one, as compelling as it is addictive. The simplistic and sleek visuals make the game both visually understandable and sick looking, one of many intriguing factors. But beneath the surface is so much more depth in every mechanic. After investing more into the game, there lies the depth behind said mechanics and a path to understand them. A roguelike where each run teaches you something new you didn't know before is great; in RoR2, my perspective of the game shifts after every run. Each run in this game is like a life lesson, reflective more so on your approach than your mechanical skill. With so many items, well designed characters, loadout unlocks, even just game routes or secrets and intricacies generated in every area, the game not only has so much to offer, but encourages the guideless exploration that fosters the player's improvement in essentially every way. Love the co-op. As annoyingly vague as I find the word "worldbuilding", I love the worldbuilding too, simply because the bases this game covers far outweighs that vagueness; it is truly a master of "worldbuilding". There's so much I haven't discovered and I know great things await me still. A must play.

When you first play the game and don't know the machanics, you're going pretty slow and not worrying that much about time.
Soon you become better at the game and maybe even hear the "five-minute rule" online.
Eventually you become so good at the game that you circle right back to realizing time doesn't matter as much as full looting every stage.
Absolutely stellar learning curve

It wasn't my first choice of a game to play, and to be fair, I'd only decided to give it a go after seeing so many other friends on their hyper-fix for it.
Its fun, unique, has a lot to learn, a lot of meta-lore that either you can slow down and explore to learn yourself, or look some stuff up online. (as I did when i got frustrated trying to unlock new characters)
It's not my favourite game, and the gameplay loop does feel a little mundane, and without friends its less exciting, but with friends, (especially well knowledged ones) they may get caught up in speed-running ahead of you and stealing all the best stuff, and you're stuck in the backlines picking up scraps. :c
I'd recommend the game but I don't particularly like it myself.

good game. I have enjoyed what I have played of it so far.
However the tos/eula whatever is stupid and I'm not installing stupid garbage spyware on my PC so WE will be playing Dead Cells
Edit: The EULA doesn't seem to just automatically apply to RoR2, but you should still be careful and maybe run this game in a sandbox if you can?

Used to be one of my favorite games. Spent countless nights playing with friends. Despite the repetitive game loop, it never seemed to get old. Adding mods into the mix made it fresh again if it did, and helped mitigate the dubious changes and somewhat sloppy updates over the years. This most recent line of updates and the ToS change is the last straw though. I can tolerate amateurish devs making broken updates and DLC, but I'm not agreeing to forced arbitration, uninstalling my mods, not will I abide them installing spyware on my pc. A brief rundown of the ToS changes making the rounds:
Important Info in Terms of Service:

Risk of Rain 2 is the rare sequel that redefines everything while staying true to its roots. Developed by Hopoo Games, it takes the tight, side-scrolling roguelike formula of the original and hurls it into full 3D—an ambitious leap that pays off in spectacular fashion. What results is a chaotic, endlessly replayable shooter that thrives on momentum, tension, and carefully managed madness.
Risk of Rain 2 is all about scaling difficulty, fast-paced action, and strategic adaptability. You start each run with a single character and a basic weapon, dropped onto an alien world with only one goal: survive long enough to activate a teleporter and escape. But every second that passes, the game gets harder—literally. A live difficulty meter ticks upward in the corner, making each delay a deadly gamble.
Combat is frantic yet tactical. Enemies swarm in increasing numbers, forcing you to stay on the move while weaving through bullets, slamming down abilities, and managing cooldowns. The controls are tight, responsive, and extremely satisfying—especially once you start stacking items.
And oh boy, the items. Risk of Rain 2 thrives on loot. Every chest you open can drastically alter your build, and the synergy between items creates endlessly unique runs. Stack enough on-hit effects and you become a living thunderstorm of destruction. Get unlucky with drops, and every boss becomes a desperate struggle for survival. That unpredictability is the heart of the game.
There’s a generous roster of unlockable survivors, each with distinct abilities, movement mechanics, and playstyles. From the all-purpose Commando to the teleporting Huntress, or the high-skill Railgunner, each survivor feels like its own class in a miniature RPG. Mastering them adds depth and variety beyond simple loot RNG.
Add in randomized environments, secrets, artifacts (game-changing modifiers), and multiple endings, and you've got the bones of a game built to be replayed hundreds of times—and it only gets better in co-op.
Risk of Rain 2 is at its best in four-player co-op, where chaos becomes a shared language. Coordinating character builds, combining synergies, or simply laughing as your friend gets launched off a cliff by a wandering Vagrant adds layers of fun and unpredictability. It’s one of those rare co-op experiences where every run feels like a fresh story.
That said, item sharing isn’t automatic, and the free-for-all loot system can cause tension if you’re not playing with a courteous crew.
The shift to 3D was bold, but it works. The stylized visuals strike a balance between abstract and alien, with distinct silhouettes and clean effects that make even crowded screens readable. The art direction leans into the surreal, with floating islands, glitched-out enemies, and bizarre architecture reinforcing the dreamlike sci-fi aesthetic.
The soundtrack by Chris Christodoulou is phenomenal—melancholic, mysterious, and explosive in equal measure. Tracks like “The Rain Formerly Known as Purple” and “Köppen As Fuck” become as much a part of the experience as the gameplay itself.
Risk of Rain 2 lives on replay value. Unlocking new items, survivors, challenges, and alternate abilities keeps players hooked well past the first few dozen runs. The game rewards mastery and experimentation equally—there’s always a new build to try, a new strategy to test, a new disaster to narrowly escape (or embrace).
Post-launch updates and the excellent Survivors of the Void expansion have added even more depth, enemies, and content, making the game feel complete and polished.
Risk of Rain 2 is a masterclass in controlled chaos. It takes the best parts of roguelikes, hero shooters, and co-op action games, and blends them into an experience that’s unpredictable, challenging, and absurdly fun. Whether you’re grinding for perfect builds, unlocking every secret, or just jumping in for a half-hour sprint with friends, Risk of Rain 2 delivers.
It’s the kind of game where no two runs are ever the same—but every one is worth remembering.

This engineer achievement is going to be the end of me. But at least I changed the lighting on my keyboard so now it looks like a fire👍. Games altogether easy if you're not going for achievements though.

reasonably fun roguelite. But I struggled to find reasons to continue to grind after I finished it.

Absolutely amazing. The gameplay isn't boring, it hooks you in and keeps you playing even though it would seem repetitive, the DLCs are awesome (Seekers of the Storm counts as well after the update) and the soundtrack maaan, Chris Christodolou cooked.
