Excellent game, never thought I would like a game with the same camera perspective as League of Legends.
Jokes apart, I can't believe how underrated this game is - or at least it feels like not enough people talk about it. At first the gameplay feels like some cute exploration game in a world full of mysteries, then you get to the first boss fight and the game suddently turns into dark souls. There's an in game manual which you need to collect pages and then it feels like a collect-a-thon, but hold on, this instruction manual (and a lot of the game's content) is mostly written in a unknown language. Having to decipher an entire unknown language isn't something for me, but for those who like this kind of stuff, this game is a goldmine.
You keep playing, discover some puzzles here and there and completes the game, game over! Wtf, what did I miss? You then discover there's a good ending and for that this game turns into The Witness.
There's seems to be so much lore, so many hidden and secret stuff that even today, it feels like that not everything was discovered.
The lore, mysteries, the unknown language, boss fights, collectible, the instruction manual, puzzles, a bad ending, a new game+ and a good ending, this game manages to put all of them together and they all fit with each other very well.
Oh yea, about the OST, it's really good. "Memories of Memories", "Forget to Forget" and "Remember to Remember" are now in my playlist and they already feels nostalgic.

Such an amazing game! It has become one of my favorite games—if not my favorite. Having puzzles hidden right under your nose and slowly discovering them was so exciting.
The story was much better than I expected. I thought it would be less of a focus, but the world-building made a big impact through its environments.
I struggled a bit with the combat and didn’t have the time or energy to properly learn it, I played the game mostly for its puzzles and mysteries. The accessibility settings came in very handy. Through them, I also discovered a well-thought-out accessibility system that helped me with other parts of the game.
Wonderful music!

Thanks to the Devs for the accessibility options, especially no fail mode, which mean my young son can play this. A great game in general.

It honestly feels like whoever designed the combat in this game was actively working against the rest of the team. The world, art, and atmosphere are incredible — but all of it gets overshadowed by frustrating enemy and boss design that drags the entire experience down.

it's been a full year since I played this game, and I thought I'd circle-around to write a review for the game since it's so well-deserving of one.
it's got the aesthetic charm of Monument Valley and Steven Universe, and really defines itself in its own style. the actions and controls feel fluid, punchy, and real; it's very easy to get immersed in this game for a few weeks straight while your mind is occupied by all of the puzzles.
I had broken my collarbone around when I first started this game. it was hard to put on my clothes or move my arm without pain. but one of the easiest things I could do was play Tunic. the controls don't require the huge sweeping movements of a mouse, and aren't strenuous to pick up and get used to. I'd stay up until 3 am playing this game, adoring the soundtrack and grinding the boss fights (which are so perfectly curated and designed)
often compared to Outer Wilds, I'd argue this game is really deserving of its own genre. sure the puzzles are a main talking point, but the game tries and succeeds at so much that it really deserves the accolades for music, design, and planning.
don't let what anyone says about this game persuade you. the game truly has something for everyone, and you can pull your own magic from your playthrough :)

Without a hint of exaggeration, TUNIC was the most unique gaming experience I've ever had, to the point where it makes me question why it wasn't nominated for Most Innovative Gameplay at the 2022 Steam Awards.

The art is breathtaking, the story is touching and the gameplay is simply awe inspiring. Tunic is one of those games that starts off a bit slow, but if you give it a chance, it will become an experience that you'll never forget.

Very fun game that makes you think. Tunic has very little in the way of tutorials which may sound like a bad thing but actually makes it more engaging. The art style is is reminiscent of the DS era of Nintendo games with a hint of existential horror in the background to scratch that Lore itch. Try to play it as blind as possible so you feel like a genius when you figure out how everything works. I'm envious of anyone who plays it for the first time because the discovery is what make this game great

By far one of my favorite games ever! The ability to have multiple layers of "that was there the whole time!?" or "I could do that the whole time!?" being discovered for the same piece of paper is astonishing!
This reviews is REALLY doing this game a disservice considering how much I absolutely adore this game, however I just realized that I hadn't reviewed the game yet, and wanted to make sure to actually give it a positive review, however right now I'm not really mentally prepared to write a 100 page long review on why I like the game so much, so this will unfortunately have to do.

A strange combination of a few different types of games. It's like if Dark Souls, Zelda, and Metroid all were in a weird throuple and had a baby, but that baby had SECRETS and COLLECTIBLES and ALTERNATE ENDINGS.
This game was a joy to experience for the first time. I hope this review convinces you to try it out, it was an unforgettable journey that I absolutely adored. Can't believe it took me this long to play Tunic.

Amazing game. Just simply amazing. I love the soundtrack, to the story writing, and to the outside of the box thinking when it comes to the "second half" of the game. Every single bit of the game was really thought deep of into, and I think it's worth the money. Very amazing for puzzle and combat enthusiasts, but not for those who are impatient - surely for the determined and initiated.

From my experience, the game just kind of throws you into it without any floaties, It was slightly daunting at first, but if you just follow the bit of bread crumbs, you become more immersed and start to feel like you become the new hero! Link to the Past meets Dark Souls.
To limit the game to such a degree is doing it a disservice, but that likeness is the best way of putting it since this game is almost unique in its genre.
It's not just a hack-and-slash, it's a puzzle game at heart, and you'd do yourself a disservice if you didn't go into this game "blind" so to speak. Don't watch any guides, don't watch any reviews. Go play it and fall in love as many of us already have.

You can feel the passion that went into making this. The world has a charm reminiscent of some of the older Zelda titles along with some amazing level and world design layered with mystery. Though (imo) it's not the best part, this game has a great combat system with many similarities to souls games built around timing, dodging, and stamina management. While not quite as punishing, it forces you to adapt and leaves you satisfied after each victory. The best part of the game is the mystery and atmosphere. The soundtrack is unique and adds to the overall charm of the world, this paired with the joy of uncovering the mystery of the world left me with an experience I will remember. I did not 100% the game, but I did uncover the "big mystery" and was left extremely satisfied with my time In this game. Uncovering this games seemingly endless depth will seem daunting but if you take the time to explore and understand, at the end of it all you will be left with a deeply satisfying and memorable video game experience.

Every corner has a secret, every puzzle a hint in plain sight. There are few puzzle games this satisfying, or that made me feel as clever as I did while decyphering a simple instruction manual.

Pretty fun, the late game stuff probably could have done a bit better with the hints as to what you are supposed to do, so I ended up looking up hints online a couple times. More of a souls-like with simple 2D Zelda style combat.

Haven't finished playing yet, but this is brilliant - there's so much to do, and so much to discover. Lots of exciting moments when you finally understand something.
You won't really know what's going on at first, but the game is good at showing you what you have to do regardless, and you can figure things out from there.

To keep it short and sweet--TUNIC is a great game, but it's not a great game for everyone. It leans very, *very*, hard into puzzle elements, so if you're not into solving puzzles, then this isn't the game for you. However, if said puzzle-solving isn't a problem for you, I would highly recommend picking TUNIC up. The game is super cute and it feels really rewarding solving some of the harder puzzles the game has to offer.

Pretty pog ngl.
There is probably 1 puzzle in this game I wouldve never been able to solve but otherwise the feeling of solving something or figuring out new mechanics has never been this satisfying.
Achievements are good. Barely anything missable and even when there is there are ways to get those quickly after. Unless you break too many coin thingies. Good luck finding all 10 again

I love this game, there's something about it's cutesy art style, Zelda lay out, Dark Souls-esque bosses, interconnected world with secrets hidden behind every corner, and plethora of collectibles that make my brain utterly happy! It's a tough game when it comes to bosses, but if you stick to it, you can do it!!

Such an amazing game! It's a perfect blend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Souls-like elements. It’s a game where gaining knowledge is more important than unlocking new abilities. The gameplay loop is really fun—you genuinely feel motivated to explore and discover new areas.
If you enjoy games that don’t hold your hand or tell you exactly where to go or what to do next, this is the game for you. Also, if you loved Death’s Door, you’re going to love this one too!
Gameplay Mechanics
The character movement feels great—you have full control, which makes everything more immersive. The different weapons also allow you to interact with the world in unique ways. Enemy and level design are solid; each enemy feels distinct, and the combat is engaging. You have to strategize and approach each encounter differently to succeed.
The only downside in combat is the item system. There’s no quick way to access your items during battle, and if you die, you lose all consumables you’ve used. Because of that, you might feel discouraged from using them in the first place.
Exploration & Secrets
The game is packed with secrets. Most of them are optional, but incredibly satisfying to find. One standout feature is the collectible "pages" scattered throughout the world. Each one gives you hints or suggestions, like having a physical manual inside the game—super helpful and nostalgic. It would be nice, though, to have an easier way to navigate between the pages once you’ve collected several.
Visuals & Sound
The art design is stunning—you can feel the love and care the developer poured into every detail of the world. The music also fits beautifully, giving off chill, lo-fi vibes that complement the atmosphere.
It’s an incredible game—a solid 9/10 for me. I played it on the Steam Deck and had a fantastic experience. It runs smoothly and is well-optimized. Highly recommended!

A glorious love letter to OG Zelda games. Fumbling through shoddy instructions that I barely understand, testing this new piece of gear in old areas to discover new areas, neurotically face checking walls and corners looking for hidden treats... this game makes me feel so fking dumb just like the original Zelda games from the 90s made me feel like when I played as a small kid.
This game is fantastic!

This game hard has HELL. But I did semi-enjoy learning how to fight against each individual boss. But it's pretty much impossible to sit down and fight each boss and find each key in one session, (one session is like 5 hours each too.) so if you really REALLY want a challenge with pretty much no help, this is the game for you, but if you're just coming here for "oooh furry link" this is NOT want you want to play, it will make you mad. Even now I don't have all the book pages (and doubt I'll go back to find them.) with 20ish hours on record just straight playing the game. To be honest, most of the hours was spent just walking around trying to find where the anything was. Not actually fighting bosses. Pretty hard to understand the story too cuz it's all in another language. Immersion to a whole other level i guess. Anyways this goes in my hard games scale as a 8.9/10.

The game is short enough to get an ending quickly and deep enough to keep you engaged for much longer if you're interested in its secrets. It takes more than 20 hours to finish, and has 2 endings.
From things like finding out the hard way about a shortcut that was right in front of you all along, to ARG and secret languages, this game is a treasure trove of secrets waiting to be found. This also means that impatience will ruin your experience, as the core focus is secrets ( recommend not looking up a walkthrough / other hints online ).
The game has an in game manual that you piece together by collecting it's pages scattered throughout the world, and is core to progressing the game. It's reminiscent of old games that used to come with instruction manuals.
I felt that the combat system is perfectly balanced, in that I couldn't beat any boss on the first try, but I could find myself getting used to each boss' movesets over a couple of tries and then beating them, all before I reached a point of frustration. I will recommend however, that you save consumables till a certain boss rush.
The starting hours of the game do an amazing job of immersing you in the role of the fox kid going on an adventure, unaware of what's going on.
The lore is largely hidden in the secret language and is kept quite simple.
Sincerely wish we get a sequel/other similar games from this dev.
Can highly recommend to anyone looking for a game shrouded in secrets/mystery, and patient enough to decipher it all.

Tunic is an amazing step into a very well-built world. I picked up it a while ago and started it, only to stop right before it got really good. Tunic is REALLY good, and I loved my time with it.
However, the complete lack of direction (which is purposeful, and usually does work really well) created several points where I was truly stuck and became extremely frustrated. I had to look up a guide a number of times because the in-game instruction booklet never gets translated, even once you 100% the game.
The combat is also really iffy when you get into the extreme situations (one of the lategame boss fights is
a long gauntlet where you're extremely weak because your abilities have been removed
, the final boss is more annoying than hard (but you're almost forced to learn to parry, which isn't something you use or are shown anywhere else).
Finally, the fairy puzzles are MISERABLE. The fact that you don't get to know if you messed up an input makes the long and obscured ones basically impossible. Even with a guide (which I had to use for almost all of them, because, sorry, I'm not wandering around every single room in the game AGAIN to look for annoying line puzzles), I had to redo several of them. They're optional, and meant to invoke the "retro easter egg" feel, but the fact that you are basically forced to use a guide unless you're a masochist severely undercuts the general premise of the game.
Super good game, absolutely worth your time, just know what you're getting into.

It's a cute game but nothing special; other Souls-likes do it better, and with less frustration. The difficulty is all over the place and it seems like the game can't decide if it wants to be a twitchy Souls-like action game or a casual puzzle solver. The conceit of the whole game being a mystery because everything is in a strange language and you're given no direction doesn't work here as well as it does in games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne -- more often than not I found myself more irritated and confused than intrigued or amused. Doesn't help that the protagonist moves like a brick and that the controls aren't as reactive as you'd expect for a game where success requires rapid reaction to enemy attacks. Got maybe about half-way through before giving up because it was just more annoying than fun.

truly, truly awful combat. very genuinely the worst i've experienced in a game since the witcher 1. this would be a much better game if it only involved exploration.
an updated review after some more time and some reflection: i was too generous. the sloppy, muddy movement calls to mind a drunken niko bellic. the camera angle obscures by design which is probably fun for puzzles and is most definitely not fun for action combat. upgrading from a stick to a sword does nothing to make the experience more bearable. here’s a quick plot synopsis: there’s a fox in a ball and i don’t care why. she can stay there forever, in hell, with this garbage game. negative four out of ten.

I only barely give this game a thumbs up.
It is almost exactly what it says on the tin. An adventure puzzle game like classic Legend Of Zelda games.
But that's it.
Perhaps I read too much into it, that there would be an interesting story behind the guidebook secrets, and the reason the world exists in its current state.
But in reality the guidebook just acts as a vehicle for introducing metroidvania mechanics, with minimal interesting story beats.
There are certainly plenty of puzzles, but a lot of them can be vague to the point of frustrating, rather than interesting.
If you like classic Legend of Zelda games or Metroidvania games, this is for you.
If you like story puzzle games, not so much.

I fully understand that they wanted to go the route of old games being difficult to navigate since there's barely any guide in-game, the problem is that most people back then still relied on guides on finishing games by buying those gaming magazines or other related stuff. So if you want to finish this game without looking for any help, you'd have to slog through many hours of boring wall-hugging and unintuitive progression. Camera also needs work since it's going to be your enemy many times.

I hate the fact that this game hides essential mechanics behind obscurity and tries to make you feel smart when it finally tells you how you can access key parts of the game. Which it hid. You have to collect your instruction manual to learn new abilities and what all the items do, but it is in an imagined language that no one can read. You can use your D-Pad to unlock secrets, but the game tells you that almost at the end of the game, so you have to visit all the areas again.
All the areas feel like a maze and opening the map sucks because you have to first find the correct manual page in the world and, secondly, always open and scroll through the manual until you open the correct page with the map.
The combat is kinda clunky and isn't fun at all.

Presentation: 1/2
Not a fan of low poly graphics - they look very mid 2015s to me and tend to make the game look dated even though devs were going for that timeless look akin to wind waker. Tunic accomplishes that masterfully. The game looks amazing. On the sound department, although competent, none of the tunes spoke to me on a higher level. Good, but not excellent.
Length: 2/2
12 hours and I've collected all treasures and got to the real ending. So happy with this one. There are a lot of secrets to uncover and backtracking to do, so the world being compact is very helpful when revisiting familiar locations.
Story: 1/2
1 point here because of the game manual alone. It's one of those subtle storytelling kind of games. I end up ignoring the story in these kind of games, as I'm not much of an archaeologist and digging around for unconfirmed bits of lore is simply not my thing. That said, the weird language, the enemy design, the manual pages - all contribute to flesh out this world. I also managed to understand both endings without the need of a youtuber explaining me what the hell just happened. Kudos to that.
Gameplay: 1/2
Nothing new here. Combat is simple but snappy. There's a very fun twist in the parry mechanic here.
It can be very frustrating fighting against distant enemies without the proper tools. Speaking of tools - pressing L1 and picking an item with the action button is a terrible idea, specially when trying to switch items under fire. If they were trying to discourage inventory management using the most obnoxious inventory system ever created, they succeeded.
Stamina management is a thing and you will get killed because of it. Tunic does not pull its punches and I love that. Not a terribly hard game, but veterans of the genre will be very pleased.
The devs did an amazing job with the secrets in this game. When you think this game has secrets, the later portions are just maddening. It's Secrets on top of Secrets on top of Secrets. I would probably not get 90% of these secrets without Youtube though. That's how well hidden they are.
I'll talk about the manual pages in the next sections.
Lasting Appeal: 1/2
Probably the best non-Zelda top down action adventure game? All I can think about is the manual pages and how they managed to hide a lot of secrets in plain sight - seek knowledge in the manual pages and the world opens up to the player. Spoilers kill this kind of game, so beware. The game is kinda short and, after getting all secrets, I feel no rush to pick it up again.
Uniqueness: 2/2
THE GAME'S INSTRUCTION BOOKLET IS A GAME MECHANIC. It's super well designed and the graphics are very well done. It reminded me a lot of SNES game manuals - but in Tunic, someone already used that manual - it looks scuffed and there are a lot of notes and doodles that can(?) lead to the discovery of secrets.
Verdict: 8/10
