Don't be put off by reviews that highlight the combat as a negative. It's quite fun, and even if it weren't, I'd still be recommending the game. Its presentation is really good. You'll be thinking about the game for months! Sounds pretty, looks pretty, nostalgic but also different.

Thanks to the Devs for the accessibility options, especially no fail mode, which mean my young son can play this. A great game in general.

Such an amazing game! It has become one of my favorite games—if not my favorite. Having puzzles hidden right under your nose and slowly discovering them was so exciting.
The story was much better than I expected. I thought it would be less of a focus, but the world-building made a big impact through its environments.
I struggled a bit with the combat and didn’t have the time or energy to properly learn it, I played the game mostly for its puzzles and mysteries. The accessibility settings came in very handy. Through them, I also discovered a well-thought-out accessibility system that helped me with other parts of the game.
Wonderful music!

Cool souls-like that has a puzzle focused endgame. Really cool! Would recommend even at full price

Unlike any other game, even with its clear Zelda & Dark Souls inspirations. Cannot recommend this game enough
And I would recommend playing this game without knowing much about it unless you're stuck in a level.

One of the best puzzle games I've ever played with more and more to discover every turn. Absolutely worth a shot to play blind but when stuck don't be afraid to consult the Manual or see what the community has found.

An incredible game! Clearly heavily inspired by Legend of Zelda [Suspicious design for the player] but filled with incredible mystery so deep you can't even read half the things said! Wonderful battle design, great explorable world and fun puzzles. I love the fantasy-futuristic feel of the world and the important in-game manual. I highly recommend this game, especially for those into mystery, puzzles and Legend of Zelda.

Notice: Some parts of the review has been crypted to not spoil anything.
Depending on which decade you have born, TUNIC is the one game which hits hardest to nostalgia nerve to us who played Legend of Zelda (NES) before early 2000’s. Especially if you were a young child with little of knowledge about English language, Internet as these days or understanding the “basic” game mechanics.
From the beginning of the game, you are a new character in a newly seen world, with little to no dialogue, you should be able to decipher the necessary details to continue your journey.
The 6d616e75616c will be the success to proceed, collecting 7061676573 will come in handy, until reaching the point of no clear way to continue. Then it’s time to pause for a moment and begin to process the 696e666f726d6174696f6e collected so far.
Being a cutesy, little foxy, you’ll eventually come to your senses and find the 676f6c64656e path. The game is full of hidden 73656372657473, finding all of them is not necessary but still rewarding and highly recommend pushing for it.
Varying enemy types with different tools + weapons will keep combat as versatile and enjoyable experience. 426f737320666967687473 are challenging but not requiring a linear completion to continue journey.
Personal note: I really liked the TUNIC of support of the original games from the past years and implementing them to this day’s standards. It is one of the games, which I highly recommend everyone to play it, if interested in touching and unique gaming experiences.
There’s only one other game so far, which can reach to same level of in my eyes and that is
The Outer Wilds
.
Final score: 10/10
I went into Tunic knowing almost nothing, except for vaguely how to achieve a certain ending to the game. The puzzles were good and very clever, without ever feeling super frustrating (save for a couple of very unintuitive exceptions). The premise of understanding nothing reminded me of Chants of Sennaar, and the feeling of learning something that you had the capability to do something that you just didn't try or think about until being told about it is so satisfying. Much like with Chants of Sennaar, Outer Wilds, and other immersive puzzle games, I wish I could forget everything I knew and play it blind again!

Excellent action-adventure game. The combat is challenging, the puzzles are interesting, and the slow build up of the story is rewarding. I found the lack of information at the beginning to be frustrating, and the final boss was too much for me, but overall it is an enjoyable game.

A rare game where the puzzles are actually challenging and coming up with a solution you've been chasing for hours feels extremely rewarding. Surprisingly lenghty too. 5/5

Man this game just is not very good.
Nothing is really enjoyable, the exploration is mid, the combat is mid and getting the true ending really is convoluted. It took 10 hours and i think i did not enjoy any of it.
I can´t believe i payed 15€ for this. Charging 30 € as fullprice for this is a scam. (10 hours to finish the normal ending and it was at not point really interesting)
If you want a good zelda like play Ittle Dew 1 and 2. These are great.

The game faithfully recreates the friction older games made by accident with intent. Combat is tedious and repetitive not because the developers couldn't do better, but because they intentionally chose to make it so to imitate the mistakes of the past. The exploration is obtuse and painfully untelegraphed because that's how games were back then. Puzzles are not solved through cleverness, but through copious amounts of backtracking and wall hugging. If you have ever solved a hedge maze by holding your left hand against the wall, then you have solved every puzzle and found every secret in this game.
Tunic is a good game trying its hardest to imitate worse games, and it unfortunately succeeds.

This gem of a game is an underrated masterpiece. If you like the environmental storytelling and knowledge-based progression of games like Outer Wilds, this is simply a must-play.
The combat can be a little clunky, but that's really its only shortcoming. The music, art, level design (some of the best in the industry)... top to bottom, this game is phenomenal.
Go into it blind, don't look anything up, READ THE MANUAL, and enjoy 2022's criminally overlooked indie of the year.

Sadly I can't recommend. If you have any motion sickness or headaches from screen flashes/camera movements steer clear. One of the boss fights makes the camera spin in a circle and you have no control over it. Also the boss fights in general are just not fun. It was so so close to feeling amazing but instead lands right in extremely frustrating.

I am just not smart enough for this game. Not that the puzzles are too hard or whatever, most of them are pretty simple actually, its just that the game is designed very obtusely and intentionally mimics the likes of old LoZ games in how exploration and direction is given. I understand that you are not expected to learn the language in this game, but without it I feel like I'm missing out on 75% of the game and I feel that I'm missing pieces of the puzzle. But I can't decipher the language due to a lack of patience, time, and not having a career in linguistics. If you refund games that you end up not liking, I suggest watching a few hours of a playthrough first because it took me too long to play the game enough to form an opinion and now I can't refund it.
This is a good game if it's the kind of thing you're looking for, but it's not for me.

Tunic is, in a single word, charming. It's A Link To The Past by way of Dark Souls.
The devs absolutely nailed the whimsy and wonder I had as a kid playing adventure games when I could barely read, and learning how to play as I went. I'm loving every minute of it, because Tunic brings me joy I haven't really felt since video games turned into a minmaxing exercise somewhere between the SNES and adulthood.
You can't optimize Tunic. Well, I guess you can, but it would ruin the fun. Go in blind, and feel what it's like to be a kid again.

The puzzle design in this game is so incredible. It remains confusing while not being overly obtuse and frustratingly difficult to find solutions. Makes you want to actually solve the puzzles yourself instead of looking up the solutions online. You'll probably want a whole notebook just for this game, but that's the fun of it!

I loved Tunic! The art style is beautiful, the music is super relaxing, and the world is full of secrets and mysteries. It feels like you're slowly replaying an old game from your childhood and it feels very nostalgic. It's crazy how everything in the game is there but for you to learn.
Only downside, the combat can be a little clunky at times and could use some tweaking in my opinion, but it doesn't ruin the game that much.
It's definitely worth playing. One of the best niche indie games out there. Give it a try!
Ps: Thanks to my friend Swits for having recommended me this game months, months ago. Merci :D

I remember the days of studying the game manual for Super Mario Bros 3 like it was the bible. This is such an inspired return to that era of game design that I honestly don't know if younger players will really "get it". Hopefully they do! But if you're a gamer from the 90s or before, don't put off trying Tunic any longer.

You know a puzzle game is serious when you resort to pulling out pen and paper
Playing this game is the closest I've felt to the excitement and joy of exploring Outer Wilds in a long time. Tunic not only compares to that game for me, but does it in such a unique and cool way that it's hard to put it into words. The final endgame puzzle of this game might honestly be my favorite puzzle ever made, it blew my entire mind when I started the 3 hour journey that was solving it. The art is incredible, the music is perfect, anddddd the combat was fun if a little boring (it was the weakest aspect of the game), but combat is not Tunic's focus anyway. The fact that most of the entire game hinges around you finding pages for a fictional instruction booklet about the game itself is such a cool idea that I can't help not mention it.
I loved it :)

literally one of the best games i've ever played. an incredible execution of inspiration from souls, zelda, metroidvanias, and other titles like hyper light drifter. a homage to the included game manuals of old.
go in as blind as possible and don't look ANYTHING up unless you're totally stumped. be perceptive, think long and hard. consider every detail.
if i could get a lobotomy and play this for the first time again i totally would. a masterstroke of a game.

For the Zelda kids who grew up and still needed closure.
I love Zelda games. I grew up with my dad and my brother solving those puzzles that felt impossible back then. And every time we figured something out together we felt like geniuses. Like small gods. Like we had solved a part of life itself.
Nowadays it's way too easy to just get stuck and say screw it and look it up. And I do it too. I’ve lost count of how many bosses I’ve googled how to cheese. But then Tunic showed up. And it just said no. You're going to figure this out. You're going to sit down and look at the pretty little manual and the weird little symbols and the world that hides things in plain sight and your brain is going to light up like it’s 2003 and you're back on the floor with your sibling and your dad and no idea what you're doing except that somehow you're doing it right.
This game made me want to solve everything myself. Like I had a debt to my younger self. A promise to solve a hard puzzle one more time. This was the perfect game to do that.
It's not easy. But it’s fair. If you pay attention you'll see it. The devs left a trail of crumbs. It’s so subtle and so clever and it makes you feel like a genius when you finally get it. The feeling you get when it all clicks is just pure joy.
I live with my kind-of-autistic partner so we DESTROYED the fairy puzzles. They were a breeze. We were gods. The story? Oh my god. I thought it would be cute. I was wrong. It was emotional and layered and hit way harder than it had any right to. This is not just a game. It’s a message in a bottle for everyone who ever loved Zelda growing up. It’s a quiet little hug to your childhood.
Please buy this game. Please don’t look stuff up. Please trust it. Trust yourself. The payoff is worth it. It’s magic.
10 out of 10. Would happily get hit by a truck and wake up with amnesia just to play this again for the first time.
And if you're reading this before playing it try to go as far as you can with the stick. There’s a weird little achievement if you get a certain weapon before the sword. Is that a spoiler? Buddy the fox has a sword on the cover. You think you're not supposed to get the sword? Come on. Be serious.

If you want to remind yourself what it was like to play "Link to the Past" for the first time or want to introduce someone to that type of game, look no further. This game is an instant classic. The metroidvania/darksouls exploration, copious secrets, puzzles, boss fights, art style, ambience, soundtrack, game manual, and lack of hand-holding come together incredibly well. Highly, highly recommended.

It's just like the first Zelda game, you're dropped into a world with no info. Just by trying things out, you'll eventually start to figure out the mechanics. Don't rush through an area, you might miss something important!

Definitely worth trying out for puzzle solving fans, as you'll lose like 90% of the enjoyment this game has to offer if you are looking up guides or anything more than small hints.
Otherwise, environments are excellent, the world building is interesting, combat is decent overall although it really falls apart in boss fights. There are some new twists on the "2D Zelda" gameplay formula that I enjoyed too.

A majestic exploratory experience, with combat challenging enough to demand attention and engagement (but with the option to focus on story, if one's pride allows).
Cons/Gripes: the game relies rather heavily on secret paths hidden in plain sight; which is to say: exploring thoroughly requires a lot of trying to walk around/through blind corners and hidden archways that often lack a visual cue.
The combat is usually fair enough, but when encountering new enemies, figuring out what and how they do often means being willing to eat an exploration-ending amount of damage.
The element of this game I think I love a weird amount: the music and sound design :)

The puzzles are really fun and the game does a great job of showing you mechanics without directly explaining anything. I found the combat to be very satisfying, especially parrying bosses. My only complaint is with one specific part where the difficulty was artificially increased by adding way too many enemies. However, that was only 30 minutes in the 27 hours that I played. I think the experience of solving the final few puzzles was well worth it. Overall 9/10.

This game has a lot going for it and just as much against it. It's annoying throughout - and this is coming from a fan of soulslikes, secrets, and "find your own way" gameplay - but despite that, it's worth playing. It's truly a work of art, as fruitful and as flawed as the rest of us.
I liked this game, then I hated this game, then I loved it. It's endearing in a way many others aren't, even if it isn't fun the whole way through. I filled up seven full sheets of blank paper, plus twenty-seven pages printing out the manual, deciphering the text so I could unlock its secrets. Even while I found the combat sluggish and annoying, I was entranced by the puzzle and the secrets hidden around every corner. The gameplay wasn't the point, it was a setting allowing the real experience to take place.
And that's kind of the central thesis of this game, isn't it? As the developer himself put it: "making content for no one". Putting in secrets that no one will ever find, just for the joy of knowing it's there. It's a piece of artwork as much as it is a game, and it deserves to exist, and I'm also kinda glad it does. It's something best enjoyed by the developers themselves, but we're allowed a glimpse into their happiness too.
The combat kinda sucks, but it also has a lot of creativity in a few key places. The language is too easy to decipher once you put the effort in, but that allows it to have realistic writing instead of everything being a context clue. There aren't any puzzles in the main game, but when it suddenly turns into The Witness at the very end, you have a really really fun time feeling like the biggest brain possible for figuring it out. Secrets in every page, on every platform, on all branches. I don't know if it's amazing, but it's good, and that's what matters.
This is a game that can't ever be put into the box of "the best game for the price", but it's something everyone should experience.
Same with The Witness. You should play that too. Now.

This game's Zelda inspiration really shines and makes for a great experience. Parts of it feel like getting to play A Link to the Past for the first time again, but it deviates from that well enough to be unique and interesting in its own way.
