This game is so boring. I go back to it every few months and I just get sick of it after an hour.

I remember buying a PS4 for this game. I did not think the developers would either purposely or even unintentionally leave the game in this state. The AUDIO in this game is simply bugged or something of that nature. As soon as you get to hear a character speak its obvious something is off.
Hopefully the developers look at this review and fix it. The game itself is a masterpiece in my opinion, however I strongly do not recommend playing the game in its current state. At best maybe try the remaster, it is possible the developers left the game in this state to push their customers to spend an extra ten dollars.

Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition – A Beautiful Frustration
The developers missed the mark on gameplay polish, despite a visually stunning and narratively rich world.
I've put many hours into this game and genuinely want to love it—but a long list of frustrating design choices and mechanical issues makes it feel like an extended beta rather than a finished product.
The biggest problem? You're forced to play the way the developers want you to play. Found a fun heavy weapon that could make a boss fight more interesting? Too bad—you can’t bring it into boss arenas. Want to ride in on your mount? Also no. Speaking of mounts, don't bother. The implementation is abysmal. They're slow, clunky, and can’t even handle minor slopes. You’ll actually get around faster just sprinting.
As for the other machines that you can take over — cool in concept, useless in practice. You can override them, but they can't follow commands or even stick with you. Once tamed, they just stand there until destroyed or abandoned. It's a system with potential that goes absolutely nowhere.
The save system is another major source of frustration. It doesn’t function how you’d expect. It preserves punitive game states (like ammo usage and quest failure) but wipes good ones (like dropped gear or enemy spawns). Want to test a tactic and reload if it fails? Too bad—you’re stuck with the consequences, even though it pretends otherwise. And somehow, your useless mount does stay right where you left it. Go figure.
One stealth mission infamously spawns an infinite number of enemies if you trigger alarms—because apparently, a tiny bandit camp can house an army of thousands in the basement. You’re punished for creativity and rewarded only for doing things "the exact specific as god intended way."
And the cinematic drop points? Your character will dramatically hurl herself backward off ledges to rappel down—every single time. It's flashy, but immersion-breaking and completely out of character for someone who’s supposed to be cautious and pragmatic. There’s no gameplay involved here either—just a repetitive, canned animation. Over. And over. Statistically speaking, Aloy should have pancaked at least once while doing this needless high stakes jump. But nope - she's perfect every time from the moment you press a single button commencing the drop.
If you kill enemies on a slope, their loot rolls away. The Frozen Wilds DLC? Pretty much one big slope.
Climbing? Don't get me started. The controls are sloppy, the routes are rigid, and it often feels like a bad puzzle platformer.
To be clear: the world looks amazing. The lore is rich. The characters are well-acted and believable. But when it comes to actual interaction—controls, flexibility, responsiveness—the game fails to deliver on its promise of freedom.
Recommendation: Skip the purchase. Watch a playthrough instead. You’ll get the story without the headache.

I really like the story and setting. Though that's ALL I like.
I'd say the game is 10% good stuff, 90% missed potential.
I'll elaborate (rant incoming). The gameplay is a boring, meaningless slog. The midair-slowmo ability renders all other weapons, ammo's and playstyles redundant. And the ability isn't even fun. The dialogue in this game feels forced, unnatural and boring. As a result, I don't feel attached to any of the characters. The map overview is a cluttered mess, reflecting how the actual map is also a cluttered mess. Furthermore, the game often breaks it's own setting. (which was one of the few good things about it in the first place.) Most sidequests are box-standard boring tasks that feel like homework. All rewards the game offers are utterly useless. The 'best' reward in the game turns out to just be the in-world easy mode, ironing out any remaining hint of challenge. Successfully making the game as boring as it can be. Furthermore, the scavenging mechanic is boring AND useless. Most of the lore (good stuff) is told through text and audio logs (bad stuff).
This game had some wonderful ideas, then proceeded to shoot itself in the foot 43 times and give up, wasting 40 of your hours in the process. Truly a shame, cause those ideas ARE nice.
I'd like to remind that this review reflects my experience with and opinion on the game.

How the hell can the sell this interactive movie as a game? I’m 4 hours in and I’ll bet that more than half of the time, if not 2/3 of the time, has been used looking at pre-rendered scenes and clicking through dialogs where only a few has any impact on the story. On most of them you can just select them one by one until all possible choices has been used.
The “game” constantly stops and shows cut-scenes which very soon become extremely frustrating and it completely ruins the flow in the "game".
Beside from being far from what I would call a game, it’s running smooth, the animations are good and it’s very pretty.
If you like this kind of passive entertainment then go for it. If you then consider purchasing the Remastered version then don’t. It’s not worth it.
Also be aware that the mods available for the Complete Edition won't work with the Remastered version. Mods need to be made specific for that version and there are only a handful to pick from right now.

Play it, to get a feeling for the future that awaits and the reasons how the world ended up there.
One of the best storylines, (at least for me), still there are some gameplay hiccups, you will just be like: "Why? Why Devs Why?"

Amazing open world title.
The world is so carefully crafted that other games blush in comparison. The story is great, the gameplay loop is incredible and the combat is crisp and satisfactory.
The rpg elements are a bit shallow in my opinion but the game is great nonetheless.

Horizon Zero Dawn is not only a visually stunning game, but a refreshing entry to the open world genre. There was not a single moment where I wasn't eager to unravel the next mystery about the world below my feet while I shot gigantic machines with a bow and arrow. It's surprisingly melancholic and depressing but also fulfilling towards the end.

Gawds, it's good. The combat is hella fun, with all the ways you can modify it with the skills you earn. The story is wonderful. The open world is amazing. The crafting system is super fun!
I recommend this game to literally everyone. It's incredible.

An incredible game with lots of passion behind it. The world is intriguing and the story hooks you in with its interesting take on the "gray goo" concept. The machines are all excellently designed and are satisyfing to take apart piece by piece revealing the base model underneath. The characters are mostly interesting however some dont get enough time to properly build a presence or impact making them feel underwhelming. The combat is fantastic and can offer some encounters which no other game can quite match, however the melee combat is rather limited, and the human encounters of the game can feel quite rigid at times. As a bonus the game has a great soundtrack.
Overall it is an amazing experience and is worth the price, this game can be replayed many times thanks to the variety of different approaches you can take to all of the encounters, and bringing down 20 meters of walking metal will always be satisfying.

I really enjoyed finding secrets and revealing what happened to the world. An excellent story.
I thought combat was also quite good at first...the game seemed to go on a bit long though as I was nearing the end.
It was one of those games I was finally ready to be done with it but I'm glad I completed it.
Overall a good experience and a good open world so I would recommend.

The setting and worldbuilding are very well-rounded. I like how each tribe has its own distinct clothing and culture, and learning about the world history and relationships between the tribes is interesting.
The combat is also pretty fun. If you have played Monster Hunter before, you'll love finding the machines weak spots that allow you to detach some of their components and disable some of their weapons. Each machine has its own unique behaviour, mechanics, and weak spots. The roaster of machines you fight is somewhat limited, but it's worth it for how much care was put in each of them.
The quests are your typical round of the mill open-world quests: a mix of fetch quests, fighting machines, fighting humans, stealth, and such. They're fun at first, but do get a bit repetitive after a while. The gameplay loop is very reminiscent of the Witcher. You get a quest, talk with a guy, get sent somewhere, fight something or someone, get back to the guy, etc.
Here we get to the first real flaw of the game tho: unlike Geralt from the Witcher, the protagonist here is annoying as hell. I know we are supposed to be rooting for her, but god I really cannot stand Aloy. I feel like she's just one of those cases where writers do not give a personality to female characters, becuase they think making them #badass is enough to get a compelling character. I just wish writers would write women as actual people. She's boring, and there's no real chemistry (not in the romantic sense) between her and any of the characters you meet during the game. She's just..bland. All she does during dialogues is saying annoying, snarky remarks, and occasionally being nice to people in need. It's very reminiscent of Marvel characters to me, and not in the good way.
This problem is not limited to Aloy: most characters feel bland and uninteresting, and it makes the repetitive quests so much more boring. It's hard not to compare this game to the Witcher with how similar they are in genre and gameplay loop, and in the Witcher most of the characters are quite charming, which helps to make the quests much more compelling.
TLDR: good game overall. Worldubilding and combat are fun, but all the characters are either really forgettable or insufferable

The story is phenomenal. Truly recommend this game if you're up for a great story.
The game mechanics might not be for everyone, because of it's somewhate repetitive nature. Grinding / collecting materials to further progress your character/skills/equipment.
Still... I'd say totally worth the investment. And as far as i can say, either with or without controller still hands down a great game to have.

Love this game it's a lot of fun it's an adventure game similar to far cry, you run around killing enemies and getting new gear. Has some crafting elements but it's more crafting healing items and arrows nothing major. Weapons and Armor both have sockets that gain bonus abilities from the items you socket into the gear.. Also there is a new game + where you keep your levels, skills, and gear and get to run back through again :)

it's weird how this game, with all it's jankines, has this amazing charm to it - something i can only describe as "playing one of those old assassins creed games".
the world is beutiful, the story is chef's-kisses, and the gameplay loop is pretty fun.
not a perfict 10/10, but still worth playing, espatialy if you want a that good relaxing single player expirence.
but do note it may become a yap-fest.

This game is gorgeous, combat is awesome, machines are bad-ass. Aloy is a great protagonist with a complicated outlook and no romance sub-plots to detract her from whats at stake. The characters and world are well designed and well written, and the story kept me hooked and guessing until the end. Plenty of places to explore, collectibles to track-down, and side-quests to handle.
10/10, couldn't recommend it more.

I've only played a few hundred hours (I never fast travel), and just completed the main quest (only have The Frozen Wilds to complete). In spite of the relatively low playing time (compared to 2500 hours 7D2D, 1100 Valheim and Starfield, etc.), this is hands down in my top three open world games. It's beautiful, majestic even. It's a well-written story with a detailed lore, great characters who were well-voiced, and an engaging environment. I can't really speak to combat, as I'm pretty poor at that (had to play one level below normal), but I was pleased that multiple play styles seemed to be supported (based on the reading I have done). I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a story-driven open world RPG.

played it when I were young, it was insanely hard and scary as far as I remember, yet coming back after two years at the end game I didn't really enjoy the gameplay as well as how easy it is eventhough I increased the difficulty. I have really good memories with this game and it is definitely fun the story is also unexpectedly amazing. would recommend if you have no background on these types of games.

The combat starts out really cool and interesting where there is a lot of prep for encounters and you study your enemy, but at a certain point even if you are loading yourself up to hit the robots' weaknesses they are incredibly tanky and can kill you immediately. On top of this you are dealing with at a minimum of 3 robots at once. I was looking forward to Bioshock: primitive edition but ultimately it's not very fun most of the time even if like 10% of it is a blast.
I kind of wonder if the big draw for its fans is the animal robots in a post apocalypse setting, and that's cool enough for them to ignore a game that feels like it's only playing as intended a tenth of the time. I understand that; I really wanted to like it, but I can't give it any more of my time.

My eyes lit up when I saw the trailer of this game for the first time.
Waited until the price dropped and my PC was capable to play this fluently.
Played it on a console at a friend's, died too much to have fun. On keyboard and mouse I am as happy as when I saw that trailer the first time.
This game is for you if you ike:
- RPG mechanics like in Far Cry 3-5
- one or both: sneaking and "not sneaking" (a.k.a. Rambo style :) )
- an interesting, nicely written and well performed story
- "gadgety" weapons and tools
- multiple ways to bring down enemies (the component system allows you to take apart the animal machines piece by piece)
- The resource collecting is not too grindy but I have been through that in so many games that I do not have any qualms any more about helping myself out with hex/RAM editors to save time wasted on grinding money to buy the next weapon.
- if you learn to use the weapons the way they are intended every fight is easy to do. If you are getting killed often then maybe try to do the hunting grounds and tutorial errands to get pointers. also I watched two youtube vids with "stuff I wish I knew at the beginning" that made fights much easier (e.g. the game does not tell you explicitly that all the components hit by ropecaster get tear damage when the machine frees itself, so you can basically strip any enemy of all their weaponry and armor given enough ammo crafting materials)
haven't finished the story yet (most side quests done and more than half of the main quests), just wanted to get this recommendation out. Had at least as much fun as with the Far Cry 3-6. But In Horizon the world is even more beautiful and the antagonists are not as psychopathic x) and you are forced (in a good way) to connect with your heroine.
The only improvements I can think of would be quality of life stuff like they allow disabling resource collecting animations in the sequel' options.
possible edits of this review in the future. for now: LOVE THIS GAME.
Will love to play the sequel, don't know if I'll buy it at full price or wait.

I enjoyed the game's great story, fun combat and alive world. The things that drag down the experience for sure are the dialogs where the characters are static and feel like robots and the mouths don't match at all to the voice performances which is good on its own. I also find it frustrating to sometimes get stuck when enemies throw you in places so you get stuck or they attack and land on top of you so you can't move unless they do. but that's just small compliance and great game overall with great performance and stable frame rate.

Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition is an absolute masterpiece. The story is rich, emotional, and brilliantly written—it kept me hooked from start to finish. Aloy is one of my favorite fictional character, and the world that she explore is vast and dangerous while she learns her origin is absolute cinema for me
The Complete Edition adds even more depth with The Frozen Wilds, added more machines and story to the game well its just good for me, because it has a different view from the main story and it tells more about the people in other tribe.
And for my own satisfaction I finished the game in base armor in ultra hard mode. I hope everyone who will get this game will enjoy it the same as I did.

this knocks other RPGs out of the park! the world is beautiful and vast. honestly i could waste hours running around this world. there's so much to do and uncover. the lore is fascinating, and machine fighting is fun and like a puzzle. you can't just spam every machine with arrows (trust me - i have tried). you have to be clever about it. none of the side quests are repetitive or boring, that's why it has taken me so long to complete the main game because i literally want to do everything. the DLC is also really fun so far. adds new weapons, new machines and a whole new story.

Exciting game play which got a bit redundant for me near the end. However, the environment the player finds themselves in is mysterious and stimulating. In that vein its really the story line that drives this game. This is one of those instances where the story itself is the most compelling aspect of this game. Its something you will think about for a long time after completing.

Great open world game, in particular the fantastic fight mechanics with varied enemy behavior stay interesting even after dozens of hours. The world is beautiful and varied. You are not rewarded for exploring by finding interesting locations/items, it's more about checking all the waypoints on your map, however, this works better than in most similar games. RPG elements are minimal, there are no meaningful ways to individualize character and equipment, but hunting for the strongest weapon is still fun. The main story is surprisingly good, in particular revelations about the origins of the game world.

I purchased this on sale a while ago - like over a year ago, I think. Never got around to playing it until just now.
Spent most of the day playing - just to get through the first part of the storyline, which is probably one of the most impressively sneaky ways of wrapping a story around a tutorial....or maybe they wrapped the tutorial around the story? I don't know, all I know is that Aloy is awesome, the fighting actually requires decent accuracy (there are weakpoints you can sometimes aim for) and the control layout really feels natural.
My only negative is, I should have played this game sooner. It really is amazing.
