Increasing the price of the most recent game in a franchise sucks, but it's understandable as the economy shifts.
However, installing root-level anti-cheat software in a game that is only played between friends, is unwarranted.
Then new EULA is deplorable.
And the CEO's attitude of "suxx for you, LOL!" is even worse.
Poor reviews for the franchise till these garbage policies are reversed.

Don't buy this game bros. They spy on you, harvest your data and sell it. They also ban you for mods and shit.
Not worth it.
This is why piracy still exists.

Spyware - Selling your info on to whoever, Legal bullying.
I've bought all the borderlands games with all the DLC's
I'm now blocked from playing all of these games because I won't agree to their terms.
I will not buy Borderlands 4 or any other games they produce in the future.
I recommend you do the same - boycott this company they don't deserve our support.

Still a good game even if you've never been interested in the series, definitely worth a try despite everyone review bombing the game. (ITS NOT SPYWARE, just existing stuff in other games and stuff to protect their company. YES games collect your data, NO that does NOT mean it is spyware. Don't hate a game because they changed a EULA to one that many other game companies already have.)

I've played hundreds of hours of Borderlands across the various games and platforms. The original is a great game, albeit dated, but due to the recent changes to the EULA (for games a decade or more old! That's completely unnecessary), I can't recommend this or any other game anymore. Do better.

I played it originally on console over a decade ago now, I wanted to go back into it because I know BL4 will suck and I wanted to play an actually good game to remind me how good the series can be. Whenever I launch the game all of the audio on my PC will break, like nothing will play audio including stuff outside of the game like audio from youtube or spotify. I have spent over an hour trying to figure out why its doing this but have not figured anything out. On top of audio issues the new EULA fucking blows, people will try to downplay it, those people are idiots, randy himself has shown his true colors, by saying "true fans" will pay $80 for BL4, not even trying to hide how he feels about the player base.
This franchise is dead, from bl1 enhanced still having memory leak issues to this day, to them giving up on tinas, to the movie being horrid, and BL4 probably having the same issues as 3. Go play destiny or something, at least bungie puts on a facade of caring for their game and its fans.

Atrocious spyware, like all of the other Borderlands games.
Gearbox updated their terms of service for all of their games since 2009, and basically made them all products that actively collect your data.
Do not support this developer, do not buy any of these games.Do not give shit bag randy pitchford money for this crap.

Great game, if you love borderlands games you will probably like it, but it is held back by a few flaws: side missions feel forced instead of optional, the car combat sucks and the main story is boring. This is also probably the best way to experience borderlands 1 and is far better than the enhanced edition due to the drop rates not being over the roof, making the loot grind harder and the memory leak glitch is non existent. You can also add most of the features from enhanced using mods or configuring the .ini files.

PLEASE AVOID THIS GAME AT ALL COSTS!!!
This is coming from a person who 100%d this game.
- Is this a bad game? Nope, absolutely not it was phenomenal. This is OG Borderlands full DLC packaged game and it is as good as it gets.
At this point you are wondering if I am insane or not, here is why you should avoid this game at all costs:
In case you missed the review explaining why 2K is a spyware company and injecting viruses and other means of malware into your kernel and steal your private information. Here we go detailed explanation I copied from the original reviewer why you should definitely avoid this game at all costs and any other products of 2K:
Take-Two and 2K games have updated all their games Terms of Service, turning this game as well as all of their other games into literal spyware.
Important Info in Terms of Service:
• Mods are a bannable offense

Collected Data Types:
• Identifiers / Contact Information: Name, user name, gamertag, postal and email address, phone number, unique IDs, mobile device ID, platform ID, gaming service ID, advertising ID (IDFA, Android ID) and IP address
• Protected Characteristics: Age and gender
• Commercial Information: Purchase and usage history and preferences, including gameplay information
• Billing Information: Payment information (credit / debit card information) and shipping address
• Internet / Electronic Activity: Web / app browsing and gameplay information related to the Services; information about your online interaction(s) with the Services or our advertising; and details about the games and platforms you use and other information related to installed applications
• Device and Usage Data: Device type, software and hardware details, language settings, browser type and version, operating system, and information about how users use and interact with the Services (e.g., content viewed, pages visited, clicks, scrolls)

So; after all this you might be asking why I got this in the first place; well I got this on a summer/winter sale sometime in 2020 or 2021. It has been sitting in my library alongside with many other games collecting dust and increasing my evergrowing backlog. Back then they weren't this evil so I didn't mind supporting them. Look, I play my games on an isolated PC where I don't have any private info stored. PC is just for playing steam games and that is it. So those woke freaks CANNOT reach my wife's or/and my daughter's videos & pictures and sell them to a data broker in China, India, Russia and Iran or even worse DHS. If you value yourself and your privacy DO NOT EVER buy anything from 2K and any other demonic woke corporations like 2K such as Microsoft, Activision, Bethesda, CDPR etc.
There's a good saying on the internet starts with "If buying isn't owning..." you might consider doing the rest. These demons should go bankrupt after all the illegal activity they have done. Their CEO was busted in a medieval themed restaurant with a USB full of illegal data on him. Think about it! There is a remastered version of the game as well and since I already own it and it is non-refundable, I will play that one as well and revise another review but as long as this malware spy company continuous their hideous actions I will keep warning people.

Easily one of the better balanced Borderlands games and it's just before they started putting in a lot of groan-worthy jokes, references, and stale memes. It feels somewhat primitive, but at least most of the loot I find actually feels like I could feasibly use it.

I don't want to oversell it because nothing is worse than people born 15 seconds ago trying to tell you that a relatively old but overwhelmingly successful game is actually an underappreciated gem; that said, I think Borderlands 1 and 2 have a Diablo 1 / Diablo 2 thing going on.
Through the blatantly plagerised artstyle and thinly-veiled attempt to be a poor-man's Fallout, you can see in Borderlands 1 the kernel of a tonal direction the series didn't end up going- with the second game being the one that defines it going forward. The first game is a little bit more minimalist and has a more focused scope, but definitely commits to its tone and premise more.
Borderlands 1 is about a trash planet, abandoned by its feudal corporate overlods, now crawling with their former indentured servants turned cannibals- and it's very content with that premise.
It's the Tristram catacombs to the second game's much more colourful world-spanning adventure. I think there's something appreciable but different about both, and worth your time.

Even worse, they re released a re release of the first game as "ENHANCED" to fix the bugs and issues they forgot to fix in this version.
Gearbox and 2K is losing its reputation.
The BL4 showcase is made to impress, but the release is gonna be worse.

its an old game so the graphics arent good enough to play on a largish monitor.. but its not a bad game.. much better than their stupid 'prequel'... its got a sense of humour and stylistic graphics.. so they dont 'age'.. but it just cant handle the higher resolutions. it also has really bad collision detection.. can be point blank and not hit the target! regardless of the weapon.. even with high accuracy weapons, you miss WAY too much.. their 'probability'/RNG is rubbish. gets a little annoying after a while..
anyway, good for some nostalgia...but dont expect too much.

It's 2025 and there are so many better games to play than Borderlands.
There is basically one environment, 6 different enemy types, it's very easy, and claptrap is annoying reminding you about new quests all the time. The get to a new area and collect 4 gun pieces to get a gun that isn't as good as what you're already using over and over is just tiring.
The graphics still look good and can be ran at 4K, and the gun play is great, but that's about it.
If you don't already have it just skip it and get Borderlands 2 instead.

Unplayable on modern hardware. I went through a handful of mice, and can't get a good mouse control. it's either too fast, or too slow.
Yes, you can constantly keep changing the DPI of your mouse, but that's not a customer's problem. If you're going to sell games, make sure they work with ANY modern hardware.
Buy the enhanced version cheap instead.

New EULA on Gearbox/Take Two Interactive titles is invasive. Stay away from their titles while this is in effect. Steam should crack down on this anti-consumer behavior.
They now collect your: bank account info, credit card number(s), RL name, postal and email address, phone number, age/gender, purchase history, web browser history, and audio/photos.
This is retroactive on titles you already purchased. This wasn't here when you bought it years ago. There is no protection for you if this company gets hacked liked every other enshittifying thing that collects your data. And they will, of course, have data breaches.

I have had SO MUCH fun playing this game. I'm glad I'm getting to see where the looter shooter genre came from and notice the inspiriation borderlands took from things like halo all the way to the american praries of the west.
Also please stop review bombing this game, y'all are misinterpreting the TOS. There is no banning for using a mod in general, only for mods that allow cheating the game (e.g. mod giving instant max level in game). There is no spyware, only collection on data that EVERY COMPANY USES, including steam, youtube, instagram, tik tok, google, etc.
So why are we review bombing this amazing game?

This is my 4th time fully replaying Borderlands 1 with a new character. It's still good in 2025 but clearly heavily aged. The loot, leveling, builds, and some quests still stand as fairly fun. The gunplay is decent for what it is and the general gameplay loop is fun, albeit basic.
However, there are many quests that are fetch-quest'y, the story is barebones, and generally speaking, you can tell the game was made on a budget. There's nothing really 'better' in Borderlands 1 that one of it's sequels does better. They're all practically the same price nowadays as well. Still, it's fantastic that this game is what popularized the looter-shooter genre and it's an important game in FPS history.
As for the add-ons, the DLC's are a mixed bag with 2 of them being remarkably poor while the other 2 are pretty good. Overall, I'll always love Borderlands 1 and I do wholly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the classic looter-shooter even with aged & basic mechanics that are tuned up in it's sequels. 7.5/10.
