The Review: Borderlands the Pre-Sequel is a good game. You should at least try it. Now, the main reason I am writing this. No, the game is not spyware. It’s a misunderstanding based on updates to the terms of service. What happened was the games publisher, Take Two Interactive, updated the terms of their end user license recently. Several actors in the Borderlands community misread these changes as them turning the currently released games in the franchise into literal spyware. This is not true. The games are perfectly safe to run and your data will not be stolen. The codebase for the games is unchanged, all the update did is add an advertisement for the upcoming fourth game and you have to agree to the new EUL before you can play online. That said if you feel uncomfortable playing due to this controversy, I understand. I post this only to clarify the situation and will update as needed. QnA: Will the game spy on me? – NO. The codebase is unchanged from before the update. The game itself will not collect any information. Will I need a Kernal Level Anti-Cheat which will spy on me? - NO. You will not need to install any anti-cheat to play Borderlands the Pre-Sequel. The update did not change this. Will I be banned from multiplayer or sued by Take Two for using mods? - NO. The game is a 10+ year old co-op shooter. Take Two does not care if you mod it. This part of the EUL is relevant for modern releases and in active development projects such as Grand Theft Auto Online where cheating via mods is a very real problem. Besides, this part of the EUL is targeted at cheat creators, not individual users who use mods. Will I be banned from multiplayer for using foul language? - NO. Again, this is a 10+ year old game. Take Two does not care if you trash talk your teammates. Again, this part of the EUL is relevant to more modern projects. Still, please respect your teammates. What data does the new EUL cover? - Emails, phone numbers, username, name, IP address, and passwords if relevant. If this sounds concerning, know that this is standard for many EULs where you need to create an account. You provided all this information except the latter to Steam when you created your account, Take Two just asks Steam to look at this information. The password clause is only for your Gearbox Shift account, it will not steal banking passwords or your Steam password.

“They put spyware in Borderlands!!” Nah, they didn’t. Let’s clear this up: There’s no malware or spyware in your existing Borderlands games. No code’s been shipped in over a year, and unless Gearbox has mastered dark magic, nothing has suddenly materialized out of thin air. The games you already own? Still safe. What did happen is a new ToS/EULA. Why? Because Gearbox is now publishing under Take-Two, and like every publisher under the sun, they need to use the corporate boilerplate legalese. Yes, it’s long and kinda sus-looking—just like the ToS for Steam, Discord, your phone, your toaster, and probably your smart fridge. A bunch of terminally online doomsayers misread (or deliberately twisted) some sections to spin outrage for clicks. The data policy? Same as always. It applies to things you willingly give them (email, name, birthday, etc). No, they’re not harvesting your soul through your GPU. There’s even panic about government-issued IDs—but that only applies in countries like China or Korea, where local laws require it. Not relevant to 99% of players, and certainly not some evil Take-Two plot. TL;DR: No spyware. No shady data grabs. Just another EULA update people overreacted to. Touch some grass and go shoot psychos on Pandora.

Here is the relevant section of Take-Two's privacy policy.
The type of information we collect depends on how you use the Services. It is far more than is necessary, and is far more than nearly any other service collects. ♥♥♥♥ you, Randy.
DO NOT INSTALL AND ACCEPT THE EULA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
A Recent update to this game has updated the EULA that if accepted gives Gearbox/2K access to: - Root level access to your machine under the guise of "anticheat" software - Your IP Address - Personal information including your phone number, email and address Refusing the EULA breaks mods and cuts off netplay in a 10+ year old game. This invasive update effectively turns the game into Spyware and I encourage others to report the game to Steam for this disgusting invasion of privacy.

It's now basically a spyware after the recent Take-Two TOS change and them forcing it on all associated games that are decades old. Don't buy or play it, same with other BLs. And still, if you want to, just raise the Jolly Roger at this point.

I want my money back that I PAID AT THE TIME on all my Borderlands games. Steam i am telling you to sort this out with this company or refund me for what i paid on all Borderlands games. I did not agree to a change on the terms after i bought a game. I DID NOT AGREE. Also these games are decades old and now they want to change the terms. I did not agree for them to steal my data and use and sell it to other people. I just wanted to play a f... ...king game and yet my money taken, data sold and spyware on my PC. Companies and Devs, take note....STOP THIS CRAP NOW. We are fed up with your terms and stealing our data and forcing us to accept your terms just to play a f.. ..king game and then you still bill me for it as well. I WILL NOT BE BUYING BORDERLANDS 4 and will avoid this company like the PLAGUE!

Making the game nearly free doesn't make it not spyware! EULA is extremely predatory. YOU are the product, buyer. Avoid this game at all costs. Consider Saint's Row or Just Cause for similar vibes.

Criticism of 2K’s Data Collection Practices 2K’s recent privacy policy changes raise serious concerns about user rights and data protection. By forcing players to create accounts, even for offline gameplay, and collecting extensive personal, behavioral, and device data, 2K appears to prioritize aggressive data monetization over user privacy. This approach is intrusive, lacks transparency, and may conflict with data protection laws like the GDPR. Users are given little real choice, undermining their right to informational self-determination. Such practices erode trust and set a dangerous precedent in the gaming industry.

Played the heck out of it on Playstation. Fun enough game, but the story was pretty mid and everything is increasingly a joke. Series peaked at BL2 and has been on a steady decline since. I guess the last update turned it into spyware, which is why it has finally earned a negative review for me. Even for 2.99 at the time of posting this, it's not worth downloading an actual virus to your account just so this washed up company can steal and sell your info to recoup from the failed Borderlands movie. But to pull a page out of Pitchford's book: If you're a real fan, you won't mind them stealing your info. I've found the review detailing how Gearbox would like to harvest your information. To quote oooooo on their BL2 review: "Take-Two and 2K games have updated all their games Terms of Service, turning this game as well as all of their other games into literal spyware. Important Info in Terms of Service: • Mods are a bannable offense • Display of Cheats/Exploits is bannable • Forced arbitration clause and a waiver of class action and jury trial rights for all users residing in the United States and any other territory other than Australia, Switzerland, The United Kingdom, or The Territories of The European Economic Area • You can be banned for using a VPN while connecting to online servers • Cannot access game content on a Virtual PC Collected Data Types: • Identifiers / Contact Information: Name, user name, gamertag, postal and email address, phone number, unique IDs, mobile device ID, platform ID, gaming service ID, advertising ID (IDFA, Android ID) and IP address • Protected Characteristics: Age and gender • Commercial Information: Purchase and usage history and preferences, including gameplay information • Billing Information: Payment information (credit / debit card information) and shipping address • Internet / Electronic Activity: Web / app browsing and gameplay information related to the Services; information about your online interaction(s) with the Services or our advertising; and details about the games and platforms you use and other information related to installed applications • Device and Usage Data: Device type, software and hardware details, language settings, browser type and version, operating system, and information about how users use and interact with the Services (e.g., content viewed, pages visited, clicks, scrolls) • Profile Inferences: Inferences made from your information and web activity to help create a personalized profile so we can identify goods and services that may be of interest • Audio / Visual Information: Account photos, images, and avatars, audio information via chat features and functionality, and gameplay recordings and video footage (such as when you participate in playtesting) • Sensitive Information: Precise location information (if you allow the Services to collect your location), account credentials (user name and password), and contents of communications via chat features and functionality."

So, the franchise is done for... They cant deliver a good story anymore, then had the great idea of insulting its fans when they don't want prices increases , not enough? then lets update the terms of service so you give us all the data that doesn't even have anything to do with the game (your location? voice data?) so they are making extra money selling your data in the best of cases... and apply to all the older games since people like those... Don't give them more money, not worth it at all

Really had fun with this game once, probably the second best in the series after BL2. Had to milk Handsome Jack since he was the best villain they'd ever have, but it worked with the prequel. The humor has completely outstayed its welcome. Then they started to make shitty games. Then they decided to piss off the fanbase with their new, effectively malware EULA. I'm angry enough about one of my favourite franchises killing itself that I'm even gunna downvote the mid spin off. Revoke the spyware TOS bs and I might still buy 4, when all the DLC is done, and it's inevitably on sale for 80% off 3 months after the GOTY edition is out. But until then, I wish nothing but bankruptcy on 2K and Take Two.

Us gamers don't like it when you touch our stuff. Down with corporate oppression. If it isn't broken don't try to fix it... Ive replayed this game over and over again just to here all the dialogues from all the characters. Game is really good so its sad to see the direction the owners of the franchise are taking. Game itself need a tad bit more color but besides that it was probably my 2nd fav right behind B2. B3 was super lame btw not worth buying on steam, got it for the PS4 back in the day and the story was absolute garbage. The twins where just udder vomit ngl. this review is for any gamer that's been playing a game so much that it practically requires you to kick things up a notch. Also I will no longer be endorsing future releases of your games like borderlands 4. Quit saturating our games...

Borderlands 3 has been out for years, and the subtitle bug is still unfixed — seriously? And now they want us to pay another $80 for a new game that still invades player privacy and collects personal data? What a disgusting cash grab. They've learned nothing and care even less.

This was my second favorite game in the series, behind Borderlands 2. However, Take-Two and 2k changed the EULA to turn this and all their games into literal spyware. Until they revert their EULA, I will maintain a negative review. Do the right thing, TT and 2k. The ball's in your court.

Even without the recent EULA/TOS changes, I would not recommend this game. The writing took a steep dive from BL2, very few jokes got a chuckle out of us, and gameplay wise it just drags on and on. The O2 system didn't really add much, honestly. Enemies felt like sponges and the amount of respawns in certain story sections just killed our desire to continue on with the game and we've never been back. Even if I did enjoy this game, I couldn't recommend it due to the EULA changes alone. As much as some people are defending them, there is no defense for making these sweeping changes and banning modding a decade off from release. None. Totally unnecessary and 2k has lost me as a customer.

Increasing the price of the most recent game in a franchise sucks, but it's understandable as the economy shifts. However, installing root-level anti-cheat software in a game that is only played between friends, is unwarranted. Then new EULA is deplorable. And the CEO's attitude of "suxx for you, LOL!" is even worse. Poor reviews for the franchise till these garbage policies are reversed.

Give me a refund for ALL my game purchases that have this new EULA. The EULA changes that turns ALL their games into Kernel access level spyware thanks to their new EULA update. Read it for yourself for proof. I for sure am NEVER buying a game from these fuckers ever again. I will spread the word too. I used to be a big fan for Borderlands...if you still want to play these games. The high Seas are the only safe way to do so. Unbelievable. I remember back when that was risky...now it is far safer. Oh the irony.

Game will never be installed again, unless Terms of Service change to consumer friendly, and get rid of your root level spyware.

This isn't a live service game. If I purchased a game with a certain ToS, then they shouldn't be able to update it (outside of legitimate reasons like there being a flaw, something being unclear, etc.). It basically boils down to: "I purchased a product, ToS says I can play. Logged on to play again, many years after the game launched, now the ToS says I need to install spyware and give them as much info as the government to keep playing, for a game that didn't need this for a decade in order to work just fine."

New EULA is an absolute war crime on their gaming community. Boycotting like everyone one else. I currently own every Borderlands game including the spin offs. I was going to marathon them with a friend leading up to BL4 but I won't even be buying that game now thus won't touch another BL game or any Take Two game for that matter that has this EULA. The things I read that I hated in the EULA where the following; You don't own your game, only use of the game, you don't own your fan content, personal info tracking, zero modding, no cheating (Not opposed normally if it didn't include "Glitches and exploits in the game" SCREW THAT! EXPLOITS ARE HALF THE FUN)

Due to Take-Two new EULA this company has now made it's games nothing than Spyware I encourage everyone to never purchase any Gearbox/Take-Two games put your money to games that do not include Spyware and care about the gamer's that purchase their products. This Developer/Publisher cannot be trusted anymore. I encourage Steam to Investigate this and remove this Developer/Publisher from there Platform If steam truly care about it Gamer base and their rights to privacy.also refund the game back to the Gamer's to the amount that was paid for at the time. It time to Bankrupt these Shady, Greedy Practices and put them out of business. Please read the EULA. Read the reviews of their games in steam Several reviewers have listed down what is in the EULA. The only way they are going to change is to Vote with your wallet. It's time to show Take-Two that this will not be tolerated. I do not recommend Buying any of their products unless you like to have your privacy violated. Remember only you can click on Accept in the EULA if you do not care about your privacy being violated. I have several of their games and i removed from my computer and never accepted that EULA.

!!!DO NOT BUY THIS SPYWARE!!! Objectively there is very little wrong with the game itself. Objectively there is SO MUCH wrong with the people who own the rights to it now. The EULA became a clusterf*ck of privacy & security rights you waive away for a game that came out over a decade ago. F@*# Randy Bitchfart and the whole Take-Two company.
