Metro 2033 Redux, developed by 4A Games and released in 2014, is a remastered version of the original game from 2010, based on the novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky. It’s a first-person shooter blending exploration, survival, and horror, set in a post-apocalyptic universe reminiscent of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Fallout, but with an added layer of intense claustrophobia. The story unfolds in 2033, in a Russia devastated by nuclear war. Survivors have taken refuge in Moscow’s metro system, connected by dark, grim tunnels, with each station governed by factions with wildly differing ideologies. You play as Artyom, a young man from the VDNKh station, tasked with warning the inhabitants of Polis station about an imminent supernatural threat. You’ll need to navigate from station to station to help as many people as possible, while avoiding numerous dangers, including supernatural events, countless mutants, or soldiers from hostile factions. Danger and horror permeate the metro’s tunnels, where everything is grim, cramped, dark, oppressive, and toxic. Yet, these passages are essential, linking the various stations. Many factions have set up their bases here, such as the Reds, the Reich, or various bandit groups. Some stations, fortunately, house friendly, almost warm communities despite the dire circumstances. Life goes on, offering a glimpse of near-normalcy among their inhabitants. People chat, joke, barter, listen to music, raise animals, cook, eat, and children draw. You can take the opportunity to buy essentials for survival, like gas masks, filters, medkits, ammunition, weapons, and upgrades. These underground cities provide a chance to warm your heart and spirit, and stock up on gear before heading back into the tunnels, moving "station to station", as David Bowie might say. As for the surface, prepare to discover the eerie charm of a post-apocalyptic Moscow. The surface is even more hostile than the underground, with unbreathable air, abandoned and ruined landscapes, and bone-chilling cold, if not worse. Be cautious—mutants now rule this domain! You’ll face a variety of mutants everywhere, as well as soldiers from factions with questionable ideologies. But you don’t always have to charge in guns blazing—stealth is an option. With enough composure, you can sneak through hostile territory, disable traps, turn off lights, and silently take out or knock out enemies. Boasting exceptional storytelling, enhanced by stunning, highly detailed graphics and a beautiful orchestral soundtrack, Metro 2033 Redux is a magnificent, cinematic, narrative, and dramatic experience. The game sets the bar high in every aspect—play it without hesitation!

There is something about the first Metro game that hits different compared to the rest of the series. The atmosphere is honestly unmatched. This is worth a playthrough for any fan of post-apocalyptic atmospheres.

Visual : 9/10 (it's serene and glooomy post-apocalyptic Moscow Story : 8/10 Gameplay: 8/10 Horror aspect : play the survivor if you want survival horror game Difficulty : Moderate Overall : 8.5/10 This is honestly one of the best FPS campaigns I’ve ever played. I don’t know why I didn’t give it a proper shot sooner, but after finishing it 100%, I just have to say, it’s amazing. What really sets it apart is the atmosphere. The attention to detail is unreal: NPCs in the subways singing, praying, drinking, crying… it all feels so alive. The first time you step out into the bleak, ruined city of Moscow, it will sticks with you. And if you enjoy achievement hunting, it’s super satisfying. Just two playthroughs to see both endings, and it never feels like a chore. Just pure, immersive storytelling.

Metro 2033 Redux is an atmospheric powerhouse. I’ve played through it more than once, and every time I get pulled straight into its haunting world. The story is linear but gripping, with excellent pacing that keeps you locked in from beginning to end. The real star here is the immersion, it’s one of those games where you truly feel like you’re inside the world. The Russian audio with English subtitles makes the game even more grounded and believable. The Redux version looks beautiful and runs smoothly, with mechanics that feel polished and responsive. While the game leans more into atmospheric storytelling than traditional horror, it’s still tense and engaging, with a strong sense of place and purpose. Sure, it has a few slower sections, but that’s part of the charm, this isn’t about constant action; it’s about soaking in the lore, grit, and isolation of a post-apocalyptic Russia. For me, this is exactly the kind of game I love: focused, immersive, and driven by a clear vision. Absolutely worth revisiting and one of the most enjoyable narrative shooters I’ve played.

Disturbingly good, mix between survival and horror. I wish there were more unique creatures like the Librarians for example, that was fun.

Easy 9/10 The game has a very creepy ominous feeling about it and an interesting story. Multiple different weapons to use and a wide range of challenges for achievements. I won't give it a 10/10 because of 2 small issues I had with the game. First and main reason is the fact you can't get full hd (1920x1080) without using some form of third party software. I had to play the game through in 1280x960. The second reason is less important not even terribly annoying but there are some missions where you don't receive clear instructions on what to do. For example, chapter 3 'ghost' mission with Khan where you have to pull out a lighter. There was no on screen instruction or dialogue to say what you needed to do. There are a few more confusing areas where you need to figure out what to do. I changed FOV to 60 (instead of default 50) in cfg file You can change things like FOV, fullscreen and resolution within the cfg in appdata. To get there press 'windows key' + 'r' and type %appdata%, click appdata at the top, click local, 4a games, metro 2033, your account number then you will see user.cfg. Right click, go properties and untick read only, change what you want and then re-tick read only (to stop it from changing settings back).

Overall this game is really fun but my only complaint is that the game hopes you know where to go without telling you so I had to watch a walkthrough on some parts like the library, meeting the demon on the surface (Not the intro) and so on but over not a bad game 8/10

Metro 2033 Redux review What to say about this game? It is a very unconventional FPS. Some stuff it does well, some other stuff not so well. Atmosphere is good... exploring aspect also works. What isn't so great are some of the battle-sequences, it is sometimes quite hard to see whether you've hit an enemy or not. Also... there is so much trial and error here... you are constantly reloading game because on average you probably won't last more than five minutes at a time and that is at maximum. Graphics are nice though. And weapons are well designed, even if they aren't the most powerful compared to many other shooters. Personally I've always been more of a STALKER guy. This ticks many similar boxes but still, I'll take STALKER's open world over this. This is not really my style otherwise but I can see why some like this game. It's not a bad game and I recommend it - if you don't mind endless train tracks and can stomach some pretty hard combat.

I mean the game was good for its time but for now is too generic and midiocer, nothing special. I suggest to watch the story of the first and MAYBE the second game and play exodus, but for its time was defenetly a good game

I really enjoyed this journey. The characters are memorable and distinct, the environs have enough variety to keep things fresh, the gameplay is fantastic. I'm especially fond of the shotguns, which look cool and hit hard. The stealth mechanics have a good balance of depth and accessability. The story throughout is fine, but i feel that Artyom lacks character. That may just be me idk. Super solid shooter, I highly recommend giving this one a spin.

FINALLY got around to this one while going through the backlog. What a great game - Ahead of its time (2010) in terms of graphics, voice acting, game play mechanics, story telling, and level design. There are quite a few games I've tried from similar years that I could not get through simply due to horrible game play, outdated controls, etc. but this was not one of them. I will be playing the other Metro games as a result. 8.25/10

Just finished Metro 2033 Redux, and it’s one of the best games I’ve played in ages. The story is absolutely phenomenal—dark, gripping, and so well-told you feel every moment. Playing as Artyom in this post-apocalyptic Moscow metro, I was completely pulled into the world. The stations, the people, the creepy tunnels—it all felt so real, like I was actually there. The gameplay’s intense, with tight shooting, stealth, and scavenging. Ammo’s scarce, so every shot counts, and the gas mask mechanic on the surface is pure stress (in a good way). The visuals are stunning—grimy yet gorgeous—and the sounds, from mutant growls to your own breathing, make it insanely immersive. Linear levels are minor flaws in an otherwise incredible 10-12 hour ride. If you love story-driven shooters, this is a must-buy. Metro: Last Light going to be next to download now.

Great consumable game, great definitive version. All about atmosphere and story. You'll easily be immersed. Expect it still to be a game from the 2010s but with better performance, visuals, and especially audio (albeit the stereo becomes janky at times). First playthroughs of linear games should always be experienced blind. Completion is easy. Overall a 5/5 for "consumable" linear story experiences.

First off, visuals. Beautiful. Now this might not be 10/10 graphics for 2025, but for 2014? My god would that have been insane to play at the time. Atmosphere and aesthetic is incredible as well. Like a creepier Fallout. Dark, gritty, depressing. Weapon and clothing aesthetic were very nice as well. Enemy designs were awesome, just a lot of cool stuff. My only personal gripes, and some are most likely just a me thing, so I won't knock the game for it, is sometimes it was hard to figure out what the game wanted me to do or where to go, eventually I found it but just noticed that a bit. Also the save/checkpoint system. Sucked to explore and find stuff, just to die and be taken back to the start of a level or something. Having to repeat all that stuff a few times got annoying. Didn't happen incredibly often, but enough to notice. Quick saving would greatly improve. Overall like 9/10. Very quick story and I am excited to play the other 2 games. Edit: I am aware there are several endings, but I have not done them, and probably won't. I will more than likely watch videos on any extra endings. Just so I can play the other games sooner.

I have played the OG Metro 2033 when it released and I remember how much I took me aback with its atmosphere and story. Now that the remastered version is out, I wanted to see how a modern coat of paint might do to the game. The story is marvellous and is clearly the main draw of the game. As with old times, Russian writers can really put you in their worlds effortlessly. And that aspect is here in spades, strengthened manyfold by the medium itself. Set in a world ravaged due to nuclear war, humanity is relegated to living in cramped up underground metro tunnels, with the surface being run through by hostile mutants and a certain new psychic species. Each journey between social hubs feels oppressive and has its own story to tell through the environment, stories that are best experienced through this interactive medium. Each social hub provides a much needed respite, albeit filled with a grim sense of waning hope and desperation. The grim inevitability of human atrocities through enforcing dogmatic ideologies even during times of perpetual extinction is shown without veils or curtains. And all this narrative choices are tackled respectfully, not just because the writers wanted to criticize something. Every aspect of the world has a reason for existing and every reason is one rooted in a desire for survival. The story balances the threat of the mutants and the that of humans masterfully. And neither is narratively shown to be less threatening to you as a player. The characters are well written for the story. Every ranger you meet, or the enigmatic Khan, or the sly Bourbon, or even your stepfather feels authentic and experienced in life. Considering we are shown none of their backstories (thank god, the last game I played was Code Vein), I feel that is impressive writing of dialogue and interactions. The only gripe I have about the story and its execution is that the protagonist is semi-mute, even though they actually had a voice-actor for him. Another funny thing to note is that you can literally interact with only two female characters here iirc and -----SPOILER STARTS----- one of them fucks you over REAL hard -----SPOILER ENDS----- The gameplay is good for a survival horror game. But its Ranger Hardcore difficulty setting is not tuned properly. I remember in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the highest difficulty removed the hunter instinct, while the stat upgrades did not account for that. Here as well, you can see a bit of laziness in the highest difficulty, where there doesn't seem to be a way to find out the quantity of ammunition you have left outside of shops. I may be just blind though and am open to being corrected. A bit more severe is the tab menu for the throwable weapon wheel, where you have to go with the sound cues. It is clear that the Ranger Hardcore difficulty only had the art elements of the HUD removed with nothing else done, and that aspect of the difficulty doesn't feel organic. Some visuals on the player's body (especially on the waist belt or something) when TAB is pressed could've been good. But overall, the resource management aspect of the gameplay is on point and I actually ran out of ammo during the penultimate mission...for a while at least. I liked that aspect. However, the resource scarcity seems to be limited to ammunitions and not throwables and medkits...so that's that. Stealth is janky...sometimes the human enemies are as blind as a bat (Frontline) and sometimes they have x-ray vision (Outpost). It is a mixed bag here. Gunplay is good though, which is important since the mutants are quick and bad gunplay would've soured the experience to unplayable degrees. One of my favourite sections and the one I was looking forward to was the Library section. The tension was palpable and the sound design at that level is masterful. All in all, it has a flawed albeit satisfying gameplay. The exploration goes hand in hand with the story since this is an atmospheric game. Two things I want to tackle specifically though. The first is the physical collectibles - namely the diary entries. These are fairly straight forward and well placed. Reminds me of the Bioshock 1 and 2 collectibles which were also very well placed. These give added insights into the semi-mute protagonist. The second is a kind of gameplay moments that you need to collect. The wiki calls them 'Morality Points', so I'll go with that. Very unintuitive and is only denoted by a flash of brightness (or darkness if negative) which are required to get the 'good ending' of the game. I don't know how many are there, but I found enough of them to trigger the good ending, so they shouldn't be that difficult to collect. However, the process of collecting them can be tedious. You may need to slog around a lot of dialogues that you might not care about just to check whether there is a flash of brightness after it is completed. It adds a lot of time to the gameplay that some players may find to be bloaty. I feel that this mechanic kind of forcefully makes you indulge with story beats that you might not want to indulge in, which is kind of unnecessary to be honest. So that is all for exploration Now, as a remaster, I am pleasantly taken aback with this. The fresh paint is very very fresh, and all optimized into 12.5 gb. I just wanted to put a positive note on that. All in all a fantastic story-focussed game, not without some slight hiccups - which are mostly a product of its time. But definitely a must play in all aspects. 8/10

An incredibly atmospheric and intense post-apocalyptic linear story that is thoroughly challenging and highly enjoyable. The bleak setting is incredibly immersive as you find that taking refuge in the dark tunnels is far more comforting and inviting than anything you'll find on the surface. Learn to embrace the darkness, fear the light.

It's really, really, good. One of the most immersive games I've ever played. The story and gameplay aren't anything groundbreaking, but it's done so competently that it all comes together into a game that is greater than the sums of its parts. The game is around 8 hours long, or 11-12 if you get distracted easily with the collectibles and different weapons like I did. I really do recommend it. It's a short, fun, engaging experience that is well worth the asking price.

USEFUL FIXES AND SETTINGS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS REVIEW I'm not a big fan of the game, and I am disappointed that after a few hours of fixing bugs and changing settings I quit the game a few hours in, but I am going to still recommend it, since the game is clearly not meant for somebody who likes action shooters more than survival shooters. If the idea of managing gas mask filters, ammo, and weapons, while also stealthily killing enemies and running from enemies when you aren't powerful enough to defeat them all sounds cool, you should totally still give the game a try. The game makes it clear that you are pretty powerless, and it's sad feeling like there is almost nothing you can do to save the world (I haven't finished the game, so this isn't a spoiler, maybe you do something big at the end, idk). I have attempted to play the game a few times and end up quitting every time, and I think I am just going to put the game away since it's clear I'm not having fun. I have created a little list to help new players with the bugs I have managed to fix, so hopefully this helps shorten the time spent searching. CLOSE THE GAME BEFORE DOING ANY OF THESE
Horizontal and vertical mouse sensitivity has different speeds
-Go to https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/966-metro-mouse-fix/ -Download and mouse dinput8.dll into the folder where your metro.exe is
The FOV is way too low/This game feels super zoomed in
-Go to file explorer, and in the search box, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\4A Games\Metro 2033\ -Go to the folder with the random letters in numbers (if there are multiple, figure out your steam userid, thats the numbers and letters) and then go to user.cfg, just keep this text file open in the background as you do the next steps -go to https://themetalmuncher.github.io/fov-calc/ and in the horizontal box, put the fov you usually use for games (don't go over 120), if you dont know, just put 90 in the horizontal box, this is the furthest you can go without showing the unfinished player model -click enter after putting the fov in the horizontal box, you will see that vertical has now updated, if you did 90, it should say 59 at the bottom -copy the number in the vertical fov box, and go to that user.cfg file you opened a few steps ago -look for r_base_fov, and replace the number after it to the vertical fov you just copied -click "file" in the top left, and then save, and you are now done.
This game is blurry and it hurts my eyeballs/How do I make this game prettier?
-First, try https://www.nexusmods.com/metro2033redux/mods/4?tab=description and follow the tutorial video he has, this removed blurriness and makes the game look amazing, make sure to turn gamma all the way up with this though -If that doesn't help, or you want to disable Depth of Field, download https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2496-metro-redux-depth-of-field-disabler/ -Extract that with the passcode "pcgw" and move all files into the folder with metro.exe
Game is Stuttering a ton
-Go to https://bitsum.com/parkcontrol/ and download park control -When it is installed, in the main panel, it will say "Bitsum Highest Performance Profile is UNINSTALLED", click the blue "Install" button next to it, and then near the top of that same panel, you will see a drop down menu, remember what it was on, and then change it to bitsum highest performance, click "Make Active" and then see if that fixes the issue -Also, make sure to disable Razer Cortez Performance booster, or specifically the setting that changes the power plan, this tends to actually make you lose performance in most games, it's better to be on Balanced or High Performance -MAKE SURE TO TURN IT BACK TO WHATEVER IT WAS BEFORE YOU SET IT TO HIGHEST PERFORMANCE WHEN YOU ARE DONE -If all else fails, go to bios and disable Hyperthreading, make sure to turn this back on when you are done
Game is crashing when I load saves
-go to https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/574-metro-2033-redux-crash-fix/ -Download the file, extract, and move everything BUT "metro.exe" to the folder where metro.exe is located That's all, I know it's super confusing, just ask in comments and I will reply.

+++ If you're not familiar with the game already, you should buy it! Great story, great atmosphere, love the resource management system, makes you think about surviving through the levels. --- The gameplay can be sometimes frustrating, especially when stealthing, but shooting and movement are quite fine. It's also quite short in the end, managing to rack up only 11 hours of gameplay and finish it. The story and the environment definitely make it one of the top games of all time, so you should get all of the series (only 3 games)

Metro 2033 is a survival horror told from a linear method of storytelling. Inspired by the novel of the same name, it takes you through dark tunnels and irradiated surfaces, strongly encouraging stealth as opposed to brute force. Although the game does provide difficulty settings that provide more loot, the ideal way to experience it is in its harder difficulty settings. The only issue that I have found is in the hit boxes of the environment and its set pieces. For a game that encourages stealth, it can be especially discouraging with repeated attempts when your stealth run has been soiled by an invisible obstacle getting between you and an otherwise obvious kill. The game-play is otherwise rewarding, and the gun-place specifically is very fine tuned. Anyone coming from Fallout looking for a more "realistic" and immersive experience in the post-apocalyptic or post-nuclear-apocalyptic genres should find great enjoyment out of both the game-play and its engaging narrative.

Dark, claustrophobic tunnels meet hauntingly beautiful post-apocalyptic ruins. The gameplay is tense and atmospheric, with every bullet and breath feeling precious. 10/10. Would survive the metro depths again.

I was blown away the first time I played and completed this game. The setting is unique and amazing. The gameplay is engaging and also unique like with the mask filter mechanic. I beat this on the hardest difficulty, which makes everything VERY hard and without a HUD. The world and lore was so cool to learn about and experience, and it was so fun playing it without being able to see the prompts. I was able to play through it without being completely lost in what I am supposed to do and where I am supposed to go. On top of all of that, it also felt like the PERFECT blend of action and terror. Honestly, I'd consider this game a 10/10. Highly recommended.

Metro 2033 Redux Review Having had Metro 2033 Redux sitting in my Steam library for what felt like an eternity, I finally decided to dive into its post-apocalyptic depths, and I'm genuinely glad I did. This game offers a unique and compelling experience that truly stands out. What I Liked: Story & Characters: The story started off a little unconventional for me but quickly picked up, drawing me into its grim yet fascinating world. The narrative is rich, and the characters you encounter along your journey through the irradiated Moscow Metro are incredibly well-developed and memorable, each adding a distinct flavor to the desolate landscape. Theme & World-Building: The overall theme of Metro 2033 Redux is undeniably cool, heavily evoking the atmosphere and survival horror elements found in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. This inspiration is a huge plus, creating a sense of constant tension and immersion in a truly unique post-apocalyptic setting. Audio & Voice Acting: A standout aspect for me was the audio. The music is exceptionally well-crafted, perfectly complementing the game's somber and suspenseful mood. Coupled with the absolutely incredible voice acting, the sound design truly brings the characters and the world to life, enhancing the immersion tenfold. Combat & Enemy Variety: Combat is also satisfying; the variety of enemies provides constant challenges, and the weapons feel distinct and impactful, making every encounter a tense affair. Graphics (for its age): Visually, while the game's origins are evident, the "Redux" treatment ensures the graphics hold up remarkably well even today. They might be a little older, but they're far from being a detriment to the experience. Nothing too notable that I did not like: Bugs: Not a big issue just thought to put it here since I ran into a few, consisting with getting stuck, caught in walls/floors from forced NPC movement and a weird texture bug with some an enemy death. I was only hit with 3 total IIRC but it was not fun since there is no save/load feature so having to restart an area after a little bug was a little disheartening but nothing major. Still overall not enough to sway my vote this game is still awesome! Final Thoughts Metro 2033 Redux is more than just a shooter; it's an atmospheric journey into a world struggling to survive. It's packed with strong storytelling, character development, and world-building. If you're looking for a game with a gripping narrative, a unique setting, and a constant sense of dread and discovery, then look no further. It's a title that deserves to be played, and I highly recommend finally taking it off your backlog.

'Metro 2033 Redux' makes up for its tad unpolished narrative with great gunplay and engaging survival mechanics— all wrapped up in its unique atmosphere and memorable characters.

Stupid game, got crash so many times before I can even finish it. Should just remove this cibai from the Steam store. So old and bugged, should just bury it already. :[

I can understand the nostalgia for 2010, especially for people who read the book, and I don't doubt that back then this game must have been mind-blowing. Coming from someone who didn’t read the book, the story is confusing. Granted, I didn’t read every little note or hear every little detail of conversations with NPCs. Its gunplay is not good. It’s clunky, floaty, and the melee is delayed and unresponsive. The guns you have are just okay. This is the same year that Singularity came out, and its gameplay is miles better than this. This game has a lot of performance issues—even after using fixes from PC Gaming Wiki, it still crashes, micro-stutters in places, and requires external software just to stay stable. On top of that, it doesn’t even run at full capacity, even with my 4080 Super. I was getting 90 FPS at 1600p maxed out. This feels like a game made only for people who read the book, and for newcomers it’s just confusing. The morality system is never really explained. You just go down the same corridors, and while I don’t mind linear shooters, this one lacks any real substance. I get that 90% of people got this game in a bundle. In my opinion, just skip it and play Metro: Last Light Redux. That’s what I’m about to do, and I’ve heard it’s better in every way. That’s where the series actually gets good.
This is for Metro 2033 Redux, not the original. However, most of what I say here probably applies to both versions, to be honest. And just to say it clearly out of the gate: I do not like this game.
I was originally exceedingly salty about having to restart the game because I reached D6 without any filters, and could not get past that point without them, when in reality, I could have gone back to the previous shop to stock on them. However, I still do not like this game for the following reasons: Every cutscene, and all dialogue is completely unskippable, and NPC characters are champions of the yap-lympics, and never shut up, especially when your filter timer is ticking down. Your primary consumption of filter time is in areas where random ass dudes are taking their sweet time getting from point A to point B in the name of "immersion". The game is slow, and clunky. Now, I'll admit, I'm not a fan of realistic shooters in the slightest, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. But holy moly, there is so much jank that this game does not need. Stealth is also quite broken, often forcing you into combat because someone with eagle eyes spotted a pixel of your body for a millisecond. The game's cutscenes do not have any sense of impact, the prime example in my mind being a part at the very beginning where someone gets crushed by an armored car. No weight, and no impact, it's like watching an unfinished scene. Don't even get me started on the sound mixing, it's absolutely terrible. Every single cutscene with any action n it broke my immersion. All of these points apply to Metro: Last Light, too. I can't write a separate review for that game since I decided not to play the Redux of that game, so I'll just save myself the trouble and say I had a similar experience with that game as with this game, plus crashing issues, and its ending being WAY too drawn out.

I don't understand why a post-apocalypse game full of ghost and kill you with mechanism design. Stupid game and ruined the original novel.
