The only game where I'd rather not unlock the true ending.
I played the og version of this years and years ago in 2013, and this still stands up to the test of time. It's a quick little game with great puzzles and a great storyline that you pick up on through diary entries and newspaper clippings (plus, there's a novel called The Diary of Ellen if you want further lore, which also has a manga adaptation).
Please don't let the RPG Maker visual style put you off this game, it still is one of the most disturbing games I've ever played and there's times I hoped for a Game Over screen so I could escape the tense atmosphere in some of the rooms (I'm looking at you Painting room, you still scared me in my replay).
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE TRUE ENDING
Gettting the true ending isn't so difficult as you just have to carry back on to the Present room from the beginning to retrieve Ellen's knife, but despite it being easy to achieve, it's still one of the most gut wrenching endings I've ever experienced from a game and I actively ignore getting the knife so I can live out in ignorance to the truth. Seeing the original "Right, Viola?" in Ellen's room was bad enough of a plot twist (that's not really a plot twist), but seeing it when Viola says it to Ellen, my heart breaks every time. The absolute hatred I originally felt knowing that we were Ellen all along and Viola was sadly killed by her own father. Ellen is a complex character anyway but the self mutilation she put herself through just to make Viola feel like she had to give up her body to help Ellen, it still makes me mad. It makes you revist the brutality you had to perform in earlier parts of the game and realise that it was obvious all along JUSTICE FOR THE FROG MY BOY DID NOT DESERVE HIS DEATH!
If you've ever enjoyed games like Mad Father, Ib, Corpse Party, Misao, this is a great game to also enjoy!
Don't let the cat fool you though.
