Its still 1940 and the clowncar of meth fueled pirates that high command put me in charge of has sunk enough capital ships to make the royal navy want to ragequit. I would not be surprised if churchill himself put a bounty on me. 10/10 game, would torpedo another tanker just to see the fireworks.
"We didn't go to sea for glory. We dove into the depths to do our duty. In the cold, in the silence, in the fear."
My name is Kapitänleutnant Klaus Stein. I am the commander of a Kriegsmarine U-boat. To others – just another shadow beneath the waves. To my crew — the voice in the periscope silence, the last one who remains calm when the hull groans under pressure. UBOAT is not a game about war. It's life within it. It's the smell of machine oil and mold. It's the dry-lipped anticipation before the order "Feuer!" is given. It's a sailor trembling not from the cold, but from the realization that down here, a mistake means death. You don’t just monitor instruments – you watch faces. Who's tired. Who’s at their limit. Who might break. Because on the boat, there is no rear. Every order you give balances between life and death. We went out knowing we might not return. That every patrol could be our last. But we went – because someone had to. Because they believed in us. Because behind us was the Vaterland, and ahead – an abyss full of enemies. In UBOAT, you're not just a captain. You become the heart of the boat. Its will, its mind. You'll make the hard choices: who to save, who to leave. Whether to dive deep or take the shot. To break – or to stay human. This is a chronicle of iron nerves and damp pillows. A symphony of diesel engines, torpedoes, and human resolve. This is you – alone against the vast Atlantic.

it is an intriguing game, that is mainly hampered by the fact that your crew left their collective brain cell on leave permanently. The games attempts to automate your torpedo targeting is infuriating while you sit there staring at a non moving ship and your people are incapable of detecting anything about it... also the game's lovely little seafloor indicator is so wildly inaccurate that its only purpose could be sabotage. I want to like this game, I tried to like this game, but with the tutorials given to me I have no idea how to do everything myself as I cannot rely on my crew. A further point that I found infuriating but doesn't fit into the argument was in the torpedo firing tutorial, I had to launch 13 torpedoes at a single freighter before one of them hit. This was with a 87% confidence in their solution... I cannot recommend this unless you are willing to go above and beyond what the game itself gives you and learn how to operate the entire boat on your own

There's nothing like putting on the soundtrack "Konvoi" from Das Boot and speeding off to intercept an enemy convoy. Also, I'd recommend playing with the higher realism settings so that you get the full experience, keep the UZO stabilisation on and darker nights off, those just made the game near unplayable for me. And I'd recommend not restricting yourself to first person, the boat looks supremely sexy from a 3P view. Calculating the torpedo variables and then watching as it pays off scratches an itch I didn't know I had. It does get repetitive after some time, lack of mission variety (not like there actually was much variety) and bad enemy pathfinding, especially in big convoys can become frustrating. I play the game in bursts: for a week or so, then a break for another 2 weeks.

It's a really fun open-world game with in-depth combat and a story you can make up as you go. The only thing I would change about the game is how difficult it is to figure out the torpedo targeting stuff. Maybe the repairs too, but that's all stuff that can be fixed by learning. Solid 9.5/10 game, would 100% recommend.

Good game with a relative steep learning curve. You can customise your experience, whether you want a more casual game play or go hardcore sim, you have options but I highly recommend watching a few tutorials first if you are new to the game and the submarine sim genere because even the more casual experience will cause some headaches for you. Good developer, regularly fixes issues, updates the game and refines features, they leave out modern politics and drama from their game, plaguing the industry now days. They support mods and even integrated features inspired by mods into the game. I am thinking about the TDC now witch was a mod a few months ago and now fully integrated and functional in the vanilla game. An overall pleasant experience so far, I can only recommend.

I like the graphics, the user interface(map and u-boat controls), the German voices setting, the damage and repair system, the ability to board(this amazed me as most games{and movies} are kill obsessed), the absence of bugs, the slick view transitions. I don't like the deletion of swastikas, and the limited enemy vehicle types, and the bow wake of your u-boat and the U-boat's bounciness over the waves. What a dream game better than any other sub game iv played (sh5 and cold waters namely). lastly I'd like to say I am a U-boats Westward guy, and not a Das boot guy. Good hunting.

Great subsim with well customizable difficulty. Campaign generated missions are pretty repetitive, but it does not matter much since most of the gameplay is spent in the journey and combat anyway. Amazing free long term support, good mod support, active modding community.

If you want a modern WW2 submarine simulator, a balanced experience of realism and arcade, you should get the game. It's fun and nerve wracking depending on the situation. Anyway, I'm off to sink more merchant ships and maybe some warships. Hope this short review is useful and I hope this game will become greater in future updates.

This is a very well made game/simulation that portray the life of submariners during WWII in a believable way. I have seen submarine documentaries read books and been inside real (retired/scrapped) WWII submarines and I think that this is the best submarine game/simulation available on the market.

The ally and enemy AI in this game make it largely unplayable. Enemy aircraft and destroyers will attack your location endlessly. Enemies will even spawn to attack you in your port base. I docked to resupply at home base and an aircraft attacked which broke the functions of the port as all the shop, recruitment, and headquarters NPCs ran for cover from the plane. Destroyers are rediculously relentless! You can dive to hide, run silent, and continuously change course and non of it matters. The ship has a wall-hack level of detection and just always knows where you are. It will follow you so closely that if you are near periscope depth the destroyer's hull will start to catch on the sub and cause the destroyer to visibly clip wildly into awkward poses in and out of the water. In one case for me their ship nearly stood up straight out of the water with its stern completely sunk and its bow pointed at the sun and its deck guns just fired at me like it was normal. Overall, the fundamentals for a potential fun war sim are there, but the in-game AI need some drastic improvements.

If you are a submarine warfare nut, this is the game for you. It helps you scale from a beginner friendly mode where targeting solutions and navigation is taken care of by the game while you can focus on the mission strategy. On the other end of the spectrum, you can fully plot your navigation realistically. The torpedo solutions have to be manually computed etc..

the german war arsenal now has a distinct lack of torpedoes and the seabed is noticeably higher and more metallic. 10/10 would wipe an entire convoy out of existence again.

Great game but can get annoying when you accidentally left your captain on watch for ships then he gets overworked and falls over board and drowns and you don't want to have to get another one so you reload a save from half an hour ago. Overall 8.7/10

Historically accurate adventure story time surviving in a Uboat. Can go full sim or tone it all the way down to entertaining. Absolutely stunning, can't get enough of it. I almost gave up on the game when I first got it. So glad I persisted. One of my favourite games of all time. Never been a fan of, or played Sea sims previously and I would be shocked if there was a better one than this.

This is the first war simulation game where I felt in command, where I really had discretion over how I play the game, how I achieve the objectives, and how I take care of my crew. I actually felt connection with my crew and my boat, and I felt a sense of responsibility. No other game has done this before.

A Deep Dive into Authentic Submarine Warfare – UBOAT Delivers In a sea of generic war games, UBOAT surfaces as something truly rare: a meticulously crafted submarine simulator that respects both history and the player's intellect. Deep Water Studio has done what larger studios so often fail to do—they’ve created a game with soul, tension, and a staggering attention to detail. UBOAT isn’t just about firing torpedoes. It’s about survival. Management. Morale. Every decision feels heavy, every mistake carries weight, and every successful patrol leaves you breathless. You’re not a godlike commander; you’re a human, managing a crew of flawed, weary men trapped in a steel coffin beneath the waves. That realism? It cuts deep—and it’s brilliant. The crew system is one of the game’s standout features. These aren’t faceless NPCs—they’re individuals with names, skills, and quirks, and you’ll come to care about them. When the pressure drops, when oxygen runs thin, or when the enemy sonar pings just a bit too close, the human element kicks in. It’s not just immersive—it’s stressful in the best possible way. Visually, the game punches above its weight. Interiors are richly detailed, weather systems shift with eerie beauty, and underwater tension is rendered with cinematic flair. Add in the soundtrack—minimalist, brooding, and perfectly timed—and you’ve got a game that feels like a playable wartime thriller. Sure, it’s still evolving, and there are moments where the polish isn’t perfect. But what matters more is that UBOAT is driven by developers who clearly care—about history, about gameplay, and about the experience they're delivering. Final Verdict: UBOAT is a gem for fans of realism, tension, and historical authenticity. It’s not for everyone—but for those willing to invest the time, it offers one of the most rewarding, nerve-wracking strategic experiences out there. 4.5/5 – A quiet masterpiece beneath the surface.

UBOAT is a deeply immersive World War II submarine simulator that sets itself apart with its detailed crew management systems, immersive atmosphere, and focus on the gritty day-to-day life aboard a German U-boat. Developed by Deep Water Studio, UBOAT aims not just to simulate naval combat but to recreate the psychological and logistical struggles of commanding a crew in the claustrophobic confines of a wartime submersible. The result is a game that plays out as much like a survival management sim as it does a tactical naval warfare experience, offering a distinctive and tense journey beneath the waves. What makes UBOAT so compelling is its hybrid gameplay structure, which blends real-time submarine operations with in-depth crew micromanagement. As the commanding officer, you’re responsible for far more than navigation and torpedo targeting—you must also monitor crew morale, fatigue, hunger, discipline, and mental health. Each crewmember has unique traits, skills, and quirks, and their well-being directly affects the performance of the submarine. For example, overworking a fatigued sonar operator may result in missed enemy contacts, while an undisciplined torpedo technician might botch a critical rearmament during battle. These mechanics create an ongoing sense of tension and immersion, drawing players into the human experience of life aboard a U-boat. The game’s presentation supports its intense atmosphere exceptionally well. The interior of the submarine is lovingly detailed, with players able to walk through its compartments, observing crew behavior in real time. From men cooking in the galley to others reloading torpedoes or manning navigation equipment, there’s a palpable sense of being in a living, breathing vessel. When you surface, you can walk the conning tower, spot distant ships with binoculars, or take in the eerie calm of the open sea. The real-time 3D environment makes every alarm, explosion, or depth charge feel immediate and personal. Coupled with dynamic weather, lighting, and day-night cycles, UBOAT manages to be both beautiful and oppressive—exactly as a U-boat sim should be. Tactically, the game delivers a strong mix of stealth and strategy. Missions include patrolling shipping lanes, intercepting convoys, and avoiding or engaging Allied naval forces. Detection is a constant threat, with sonar, radar, and air patrols forcing players to master evasive maneuvers, silent running, and depth management. Torpedo attacks are satisfying to execute but require precision planning—taking into account angle, speed, distance, and stealth. Combat is rarely about brute force and more often about timing, patience, and decision-making under pressure. When the tension peaks during a depth charge attack, UBOAT becomes a nerve-wracking survival sim, demanding cool-headed resource management as systems fail and panic creeps into your crew. Beyond combat, there’s a strong economic and strategic layer. Players must manage fuel consumption, food supplies, and spare parts, while also returning to port to upgrade systems, train crew, and receive new mission assignments. The broader campaign gives a sandbox feel to the experience, with dynamic events and changing war conditions influencing missions and difficulty. This long-form structure offers strong replayability and a sense of long-term progression that mirrors the relentless pace of wartime operations. However, UBOAT is not without its imperfections. The game, still in Early Access as of mid-2025, occasionally suffers from bugs, pathfinding issues, and erratic AI behavior. Crew members may sometimes fail to follow orders or get stuck in animations, which can be frustrating in high-pressure moments. Some systems lack polish or clarity, and the learning curve can be steep for players unfamiliar with submarine operations or micro-management gameplay. Tutorials and tooltips exist but are not always sufficient to explain deeper mechanics, which may require trial-and-error or external guides. Despite these limitations, UBOAT is a standout in the niche genre of submarine simulators, capturing a unique blend of tension, realism, and emotional involvement. It doesn’t merely ask you to captain a vessel—it asks you to lead a crew, manage their lives, and make difficult decisions under the constant threat of death and failure. For those willing to invest in its systems and tolerate the occasional rough edge, UBOAT offers a deeply atmospheric and rewarding simulation experience that honors the historical complexity of submarine warfare. With continued development and updates, it has the potential to become the definitive U-boat simulator of its generation. Rating: 8/10

This is such a lovely game! Reason for negative review: the audio. The voices and some sound effects are too quiet, even on max audio settings. Only the music seems to achieve decent volume. To compensate, I must set my Windows audio volume much higher than for any of the other 100+ games I've played, at which point I can decently play the game, but then if some other audio input comes in while I'm playing, my eardrums are toast. A search of the Net and Steam discussions reveals that this problem has a history going back to at least 2020, with many players reporting the problem. Can it really be such a hard fix? For me it's a game-breaker. What a shame, because the game seems to be so good otherwise. If the devs succeed in fixing this problem, I'll be only too happy to give the game another chance and change my review. Until then: there are so many other games to play -- and so little time.

I Have Played Many simulations over my years and I can Honestly say that UBOAT is one of the best War time simulations I have ever played, It gives you complete control over the entire operation of your vessel and crew and the missions you take have different variables each time you play it,, Very Satisfied with the game.

UBOAT isn’t just a submarine sim, it’s a fully immersive command experience that demands your full attention, discipline, and tactical foresight. Every patrol feels like a high-stakes expedition, where forgetting to stock enough food or neglecting a malfunctioning oxygen scrubber can send your mission spiraling toward disaster. It’s punishing but also deeply rewarding. You’ll learn through failure. When you finally stalk a convoy, chart the perfect intercept course, and let loose a salvo of torpedoes that all hit, you’ll feel like a predator of the deep. Combat is only part of the mastery. Managing crew morale, power consumption, oxygen levels, and navigating ever-evolving threats adds intense realism. The game's progression system makes each successful return to port feel like a heroic victory, with meaningful upgrades that mirror the evolving technologies and dangers of the war itself. What sets UBOAT apart is the developer commitment: realistic timeline progression, regular content updates, story-driven missions, and full Steam Workshop integration. It’s clear they’ve built something special and they’re still pushing it forward.
