In a world overrun by aliens, failure isn’t a plot twist—it’s a game mechanic. XCOM® 2, released in 2016, took the already punishing brilliance of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and turned the pressure dial to 11. Nearly a decade later, it still holds its ground as one of the most tense, rewarding, and punishing tactical strategy games ever made.
If you’ve ever screamed at a 95% miss or mourned a veteran sniper lost to a Sectoid crit, you already know: XCOM 2 doesn’t play fair—but that’s exactly why we love it.
Unlike its predecessor, XCOM 2 begins with humanity already having lost. The alien overlords (ADVENT) have taken over Earth, and you're not defending the planet—you're leading a resistance from the shadows.
This narrative twist changes everything:
-Missions feel like guerrilla warfare, not defense ops.
-You’re outgunned and always on the back foot.
-The stakes feel higher because every decision is survival-based, not strategic luxury.
The result is a more aggressive, risk-taking kind of XCOM—where bold plays are often your only shot.
XCOM 2 retains the core elements that define the franchise:
-Turn-based tactical combat on grid-based maps
-Permadeath for soldiers, complete with fully customizable names, bios, and gear
-Resource juggling and tech progression on the global map (now a mobile command ship)
But it adds meaningful upgrades:
-Concealment mechanics that allow for ambushes and sneak tactics
-More diverse mission types, with timers, hostage rescues, and sabotage
-Modular weapon upgrades and personal soldier stories
-Procedurally generated maps, keeping each campaign fresh
-Expanded classes and skill trees, like the stealthy Ranger or explosive Grenadier
It’s not just a test of tactics—it’s a test of your nerve.
The strategic layer has you flying around the world in the Avenger, a stolen alien craft turned mobile HQ. You’ll:
-Choose where to allocate time and resources
-Make contact with resistance cells
-Prioritize R&D or construction
-Balance intel, supplies, and mission opportunities
-Counter the looming threat of the Avatar Project, the game’s ticking doomsday clock
The brilliance of XCOM 2 lies in resource scarcity. You’re never fully prepared. You’ll never feel ready. You must make hard choices constantly, and living with the consequences is the whole experience.
The 2017 War of the Chosen expansion elevates XCOM 2 from “excellent” to “genre-defining”:
-Introduces the Chosen, elite alien nemeses with unique abilities who hunt you across the campaign
-Adds three new resistance factions (Reapers, Skirmishers, Templars), each with new soldier classes and tactics
-Brings in bond mechanics between soldiers, fatigue systems, and covert actions
-It turns the game into a narrative-rich war saga—with rivalries, alliances, and emergent stories that rival some RPGs.
It’s so good that it’s hard to imagine XCOM 2 without it.
By 2025 standards, the visuals are showing their age—but art direction and atmosphere still deliver:
-Urban ruins, alien facilities, and jungle outposts are all distinct and memorable
-Cinematic camera angles during attacks heighten the drama (even when they miss...)
-Sound design is exceptional—tense music swells, alien screeches, and soldier shouts enhance immersion
-Voice acting, particularly from Bradford and the Chosen, adds surprising weight
Plus, customization options are top-tier—you’ll get attached to your soldiers, and losing them hurts.
Weaknesses and Rough Edges:
-Performance issues were a big problem at launch (now largely patched, but still worth noting)
-RNG frustration: 95% hit misses will haunt you—though this is more a feature than a flaw to many
-Long load times and occasional stutters, especially with mods
-Some late-game missions can feel drawn-out or repetitive
Also, it’s hard. Even on normal difficulty, XCOM 2 pulls no punches. But if you’re looking for a forgiving power fantasy… you’re in the wrong war.
XCOM® 2 is not just a strategy game—it’s a story machine, a stress test, and a celebration of tactical brilliance under pressure. Whether you’re executing the perfect ambush or watching your best soldier get crit from full cover, the game never stops delivering tension, triumph, and heartbreak.
With War of the Chosen included, it's easily one of the greatest turn-based tactics games ever made—and it still outclasses most of what the genre has offered in the years since.
Pros:
-Deep, rewarding tactical combat with real stakes
-Tons of customization and emergent storytelling
-Great variety of missions, enemies, and maps
-War of the Chosen expands everything dramatically
-Mod support keeps the game fresh for years
Cons:
-Occasional performance issues and bugs
-RNG can be brutal and demoralizing
-UI and info overload for newcomers
-Steep learning curve, especially without expansion
XCOM® 2 is a masterclass in strategy under pressure—a game where every victory feels earned, every loss stings, and every campaign writes a new war story. If you haven’t played it yet, don’t wait for the invasion to end.
