Take Two is a bad company that is only capable of doing bad things. Like putting spyware in an old game.

There are roughly 20 mods that give quality-of-life and usability improvements to the base game that should be added for maximum fun times [and minimum frustration]. (That may sound intimidating or an overhaul of modification, but it isn't in this case - search online for 'essential' mods to find these. 7.5/10 vanilla experience 10/10 modded

fuck the spyware, and also the new mod launchers will not work for shit. last mod launcher before whenever this update came out, the 2k laucnher was much better than this when it came to mods funnily enough. Now for some reason i am having significant trouble loading these mods. i tried everything. fixes, third party mod launchers, nothing. this sucks. what about vanilla game though you may ask? its...Fine? but the fact that they for what ever reason juiced up this game with yummy delicious spyware, its just messed up in my very honest opinion. Would i still reccomend this game on its own? yeah, but please beware the risks of the spyware implanted in the game and also that the new mod launchers are utter garbage.

Bought this, was thinking of playing, until I saw the EULA changes. Can't play something I bought long ago because they decided to install spyware out of the blue without any chance of changing it, in a single player game. I'll be pirating this I guess.

I absolutely love this game, like my favorite game of all time. Unfortunately, too many companies are taking advantage of people and their terms of service and business practices are absolutely atrocious. Keep your money and just give 2K and Firaxis the finger.

DISCLAIMER 1: Gave a thumbs down because 2k and Firaxis really shit the bed, you can read countless other reviews if you want to know more about it. This has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game. DISCLAIMER 2: I wrote this review while off my ADHD meds so take it with a grain of salt.
Positive
I'll start by saying XCOM2 is a really good strategy game, maybe one of the best turn based strategy games of all time. The amount of strategic and tactical depth encompassed in this game is astounding. The game will demand that you get good and learn it's systems even on the lowest difficulty so take this as a warning if you don't have time for that. BUT, if you do have the time and 'tism necessary to learn this game inside and out you will be left very satisfied. There are countless ways to play encounters and campaigns have enough randomness in them to make them feel completely different from one another. Not to mention that Firaxis somehow managed to make digitalised crack again like they did with CIv so this game is more addicting than heroin.
War of the Chosen
This should be up there as one of the best game DLCs ever made. In the same league as Blood and Wine from TW3 or BNW for Civ5. The chosen add so much fun and life in this game is unreal. Scrubs complain that they make the game too hard, forgetting you can also get three new hero units specifically made to fight them? I'm sorry mate but a reaper alone can shit on any chosen any day of the week if built right. Love the assassin and hunter, warlock feels lackluster by comparison but it's still very high quality content. Same for the hero units, reaper is busted, templar is really fun but skirmishers are disappointing because they feel balanced lol. Anyways, do yourself a service and grab this DLC if you play the game past the refund time, you won't regret it. Do you like robots? I sure do. You know what Lily Shen, maybe you're not such a twat after all. Grab Shen's last gift if you like mechs and think games should be fun.
Mixed
You can still find bugs semi regularly, like sometimes animations will just shit themselves and not play properly. Like you will have guys stare each other down akwardly from time to time for no reason. No egregious bugs besides the one time my overwatch shot bugged tf out and nuked my match, had to restart the mission but that was the worst one by far. I also remember another where if you instakill an enemy with a repeater on the last mission the scripting just breaks and the game gets stuck, I'd be PISSED if that happened on an Ironman run.
Alien Hunters and Tactical legacies
I'd say the alien bosses added are turbo unbalanced and unfun, you have to cheese the shot out of them if you want to kill them. At least the game gives you the tools to do so (frost bombs are very balanced). All in all not the most positive experience but I would't say it's bad either. The tactical legacy DLC just adds some side content story missions detached from the main campaign that you may or may not like. They also add a bunch of random garbage clutter in every campaign you play and I can't for the life of me figure how to turn that shit off. All in all have mixed feelings about it.
Negative
I can't figure who the fuck thought about putting that stupid ass punk clothes DLC in the game, easily one of the worst features in the game. For a period of time I turned that shit off just cause it was so egregiously stupid and out of character for the game that just mistakenly hovering over the damn cosmsetics just pissed me off. Also the other cosmetic DLC is VERY weak in content. I'd say those two DLC are hot garbage and should be disabled or not bought at all if you can. Really foreshadows how tone deaf and moronic the writers will be in the future. If you ever feel like you wanna kill yourself and can't find any good reasons to do so grab XCOM: Chimera Squad on a sale. I swear that game is a Marvel superhero movie with a XCOM cosplay on.
Conclusion
This game is an absolute gem, if you have the money for it and you love strategy games just do yourself a favour. Only thing I'm sad about is that there will never be a good XCOM3, not unless they fire those dogshit writers they have and Firaxis gets their shit together. Meanwhile try Battle Brothers, those devs actually care about making good videogames and maybe check out their new game MENANCE in the future. Hopefully that will scratch the XCOM3 itch.

Eula change makes using mods on single player game.. too scary... making this game now complete garbage. - technically its worse than garbage... since this one can also spy on you...

While this game is absolutely legendary its unfortunate that it's in the hands of a company that wants to resort to spyware as a way to "fix" their titles. This change in the EULA was absolutely the worst decision they've made so far (unless if worse has happened and I don't know about it). Again great game... 2K and Take two themselves? Not so much.

They "seilently" updated their 3rd party Eula that you must agree if you want to play this game anymore and by playing and agreeing to those conditions 2k and firaxis can spy all of your activity on your pc and sell that data others. This activity is unacceptable and you should vote by not purchasing this game or any other one of their game as they are all subject to this data mining. TRASH DO NOT BUY

I love XCOM, but F 2k, don't buy it here and go for the one in GOG instead or dont do it at all, and what is the need to add a launcher? it presents problems when installing that you previously didn't have. 2k just banned mods on its EULA and gave themselves rights to revoke your game license if you use mods. Oh, and they also took the liberty to add a lil clause in which if you accept, they can take personal info from your pc.

Say what you want, i tried, i really tried, but when enemies hit me through 2 walls all the time, And i constantly miss my targets at 92% chance, well what can i say not my type of game. The first xcom, i came to the ending, it was paced nicely. Xcom 2, dear god, i just want to get those supplies that make me scan for 5 days. I get bombardment with notifications during those 5 days that make me feel as if i had malware. Maybe its your type of game, get it for cheap during a discount give it a try, but i liked the first one more.

Trust no % — XCOM lies" Started a mission. Flanked an alien. Had a 97% chance to hit. Missed. Alien laughed, threw a grenade, wiped out half my squad. Promoted the lone survivor out of guilt. 10/10 would suffer again. This game turns you into a tactical genius and a broken mess. It’s like chess, if pawns had PTSD and queens exploded.

Can't in good faith recommend this game with the new TOS in place. You can disagree when you boot up the game BUT you have to do that EVERY SINGLE TIME. The new terms have no place in any game. A tldr of the terms, think of the new TOS as permission to have spyware on your computer. Nothing could ever go wrong with a company collecting your data with no real safe guards whether they secure it or not other than "Trust me bro". Avoid any 2k game like the plague or run it on an entirely different machine you don't have anything on at the very least. Below is who they're sharing AND selling this information to directly pulled from their Privacy Policy under their website take2games.com: As detailed below, we share your information with: vendors that perform support and other services for us Take-Two group members advertising service providers and third-party advertising partners other third parties (e.g., for collaborative offerings, legal and safety purposes, in connection with the sale or transfer of a business or asset, and other purposes with your permission) other users, such as when you participate in open communities or events, or information published on leaderboards In the last 12 months, Take-Two has sold and/or shared unique identifiers, IP address, as well as Internet/Electronic Activity and Profile Inferences with third-party advertising providers to enable us to provide personalized advertising to you and others like you. Better than enemy unknown in every way, which was already a high bar and that's before you get to mods. One of the best mods you can add is Long War of the Chosen which feels like an entire new expansion with new aliens, weapons, and soldier classes. This time it's YOU who are the intruders so you can set up and hit the occupying alien forces at your own discretion, or even try to stealth complete the missions entirely. I really like this game.

keeps with the xcom playstyle while adding new aspects of the game to make it enjoyable longer. most turn based games have a sorta curve to the tech tree, where you get to a point in the game that your tech can be so good you just roll through levels and the game starts to just fell grindy. i feel that xcom has gotten around this somewhat by having harder enemies introduced as the game progresses but allow you to research them after the kill is made. so even later in the game when you have those great weapons and armor, you come across this enemy not encountered yet and it shakes this up. as for me i have no real issues with the game and will continue playing in the future.

This game is heroin, and I'm a happy drug addict. If you like strategy games and turn based combat, I can't recommend this game enough. If you've never played an XCOM game before, start here. Buy the base game, play it, beat it, and if you like it and want more, buy all of the story DLC (FYI: I don't recommend buying the DLC before you've dipped your toes as they make the game harder. Oh, by the way, this game is hard. Just how I like it).

In a world overrun by aliens, failure isn’t a plot twist—it’s a game mechanic. XCOM® 2, released in 2016, took the already punishing brilliance of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and turned the pressure dial to 11. Nearly a decade later, it still holds its ground as one of the most tense, rewarding, and punishing tactical strategy games ever made. If you’ve ever screamed at a 95% miss or mourned a veteran sniper lost to a Sectoid crit, you already know: XCOM 2 doesn’t play fair—but that’s exactly why we love it. Unlike its predecessor, XCOM 2 begins with humanity already having lost. The alien overlords (ADVENT) have taken over Earth, and you're not defending the planet—you're leading a resistance from the shadows. This narrative twist changes everything: -Missions feel like guerrilla warfare, not defense ops. -You’re outgunned and always on the back foot. -The stakes feel higher because every decision is survival-based, not strategic luxury. The result is a more aggressive, risk-taking kind of XCOM—where bold plays are often your only shot. XCOM 2 retains the core elements that define the franchise: -Turn-based tactical combat on grid-based maps -Permadeath for soldiers, complete with fully customizable names, bios, and gear -Resource juggling and tech progression on the global map (now a mobile command ship) But it adds meaningful upgrades: -Concealment mechanics that allow for ambushes and sneak tactics -More diverse mission types, with timers, hostage rescues, and sabotage -Modular weapon upgrades and personal soldier stories -Procedurally generated maps, keeping each campaign fresh -Expanded classes and skill trees, like the stealthy Ranger or explosive Grenadier It’s not just a test of tactics—it’s a test of your nerve. The strategic layer has you flying around the world in the Avenger, a stolen alien craft turned mobile HQ. You’ll: -Choose where to allocate time and resources -Make contact with resistance cells -Prioritize R&D or construction -Balance intel, supplies, and mission opportunities -Counter the looming threat of the Avatar Project, the game’s ticking doomsday clock The brilliance of XCOM 2 lies in resource scarcity. You’re never fully prepared. You’ll never feel ready. You must make hard choices constantly, and living with the consequences is the whole experience. The 2017 War of the Chosen expansion elevates XCOM 2 from “excellent” to “genre-defining”: -Introduces the Chosen, elite alien nemeses with unique abilities who hunt you across the campaign -Adds three new resistance factions (Reapers, Skirmishers, Templars), each with new soldier classes and tactics -Brings in bond mechanics between soldiers, fatigue systems, and covert actions -It turns the game into a narrative-rich war saga—with rivalries, alliances, and emergent stories that rival some RPGs. It’s so good that it’s hard to imagine XCOM 2 without it. By 2025 standards, the visuals are showing their age—but art direction and atmosphere still deliver: -Urban ruins, alien facilities, and jungle outposts are all distinct and memorable -Cinematic camera angles during attacks heighten the drama (even when they miss...) -Sound design is exceptional—tense music swells, alien screeches, and soldier shouts enhance immersion -Voice acting, particularly from Bradford and the Chosen, adds surprising weight Plus, customization options are top-tier—you’ll get attached to your soldiers, and losing them hurts. Weaknesses and Rough Edges: -Performance issues were a big problem at launch (now largely patched, but still worth noting) -RNG frustration: 95% hit misses will haunt you—though this is more a feature than a flaw to many -Long load times and occasional stutters, especially with mods -Some late-game missions can feel drawn-out or repetitive Also, it’s hard. Even on normal difficulty, XCOM 2 pulls no punches. But if you’re looking for a forgiving power fantasy… you’re in the wrong war. XCOM® 2 is not just a strategy game—it’s a story machine, a stress test, and a celebration of tactical brilliance under pressure. Whether you’re executing the perfect ambush or watching your best soldier get crit from full cover, the game never stops delivering tension, triumph, and heartbreak. With War of the Chosen included, it's easily one of the greatest turn-based tactics games ever made—and it still outclasses most of what the genre has offered in the years since. Pros: -Deep, rewarding tactical combat with real stakes -Tons of customization and emergent storytelling -Great variety of missions, enemies, and maps -War of the Chosen expands everything dramatically -Mod support keeps the game fresh for years Cons: -Occasional performance issues and bugs -RNG can be brutal and demoralizing -UI and info overload for newcomers -Steep learning curve, especially without expansion XCOM® 2 is a masterclass in strategy under pressure—a game where every victory feels earned, every loss stings, and every campaign writes a new war story. If you haven’t played it yet, don’t wait for the invasion to end. Rating: 8/10

I really enjoy the unit customization in this game, both in ability trees and appearance. This makes every unit feel unique and raises the steaks for losing them in combat. The abilities for each individual unit are diverse enough to allow for multiple build paths for the same type of unit. WOTC DLC expands this even further, with the ability to cross train some unit abilities, making the best of both worlds for certain unit types. The game play is fun and challenging, and while there is a steep learning curve for those brand new to these type of games, there is a lot of fun and entertainment once you zero it in. You can also save scum your way through the learning curve and play fair once you know what all the enemy types can do, what the rules are, etc. There's really a lot of ways to play and a lot of fun to be had here. I highly recommend this game if you're looking for something to sink your teeth into and a challenge to master.

This game is very hard to get into. There's a huge graphics improvement over the previous game, but they try too hard, much like the phone games. It looks like they try to make it an open world game, but in the first four hours, I haven't been able to make any real choices. The fighting is interesting, but every time an "option" comes up, the game tells me to be careful not to choose *this one* or it might not be available later on! The aliens are more disgusting. For trying so hard on the graphics improvement, the "zombie" forces all look the same. The initial trio of super bad aliens you'll eventually face look too much like demons, and I don't like that at all. I think four hours is enough. I'm going to delete this game!

Still an amazing classic after all these years! The MODS add real depth to over an overall solid game, and I still enjoy the challenges.

Personally, I like this more than XCOM:EU/EW. It's very addictive, and always leave me with this "just one more turn" or just one more mission feeling. I am too chicken to play on Ironman, though.

XCOM 2 is a worthy sequel and as of now sadly the last really good XCOM game in the franchise. This time the aliens, called Advent, have taken over earth and you are leadind the growing resistance! To win you have to build your flying base, the Avenger, recruit and level soldiers, research and build equipment and slowly but steadily fight against the alien forces! The gameplay improved in every aspect compared to its predecessor and the graphics still hold up to day! The only negative aspects are the dissapointing DLCs and the annoying but at least not gamebreaking bugs. 9/10

I played XCOM and loved it, this builds on that admirably. Definitely worth playing, one of the few games I bothered to replay.

This game is amazing. Difficult, but amazing. However, a lot is based on RNG. So rage-quitting is common :D

Line of sight is totally broken, the chance of hitting enemies under the terrain (with absolute no line of sight) is higher than an enemy behind a bush... wtf Game totally ignores the player turns, just because you activated an objective it jumps trough all your other soldiers turn and starts the enemy turn.

I really in joyed the turn-based combat, and how smoothly the fighting was. The story was insteresting and the graphics we nice. Overall a good game

The definite way of enjoying turn based tactics. You will see occasional bugs here and there. Graphics could need some modern overhaul, DLSS and frame gen would be nice. But overall, still the most enjoyable turn based tactics out there.

gotta be honest here. done a ton of playthroughs, all difficulties over the years and one thing i can say is IF ITS A 89% YELLOW CRIT AND THEYRE FLANKED AND OUT IN THE OPEN I BETTER HIT THAT SHOT REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE nah i love this game. loadouts are fun, strats are fun, customizing your people never gets old. i played some decision making military games on armourgames/addicting games or something like that as a kid and never found anything to scratch that itch and then boom found something. 290 hours lol.

Love the feel of the game. The entire story is a race against the clock and for as many advances you make there are just as many setbacks. Something to keep in mind for a first time play is that the game can feel very punishing because if you don't take advantage of every possible tool available to you things will get much harder. Wonderful game, would absolutely recommend if strategy is your thing.

I can see why many call it the best strategy game of all time. The depth feels endless, and the modding scene is incredible. I could easily sink hundreds of hours into it without getting bored. I already want to replay it on a higher difficulty and eventually try Long WotC. (10/10)

Great continuance of its precursor, lots of fun and with some added layers of customization over multiple parts of the game were an excellent addition on what was already great from the last game.

Addictive gameplay, deep strategy and really cool cinematic components to combat and UI. Also very unforgiving and kind of janky. Great pickup if its on sale.

Great game. But War of the Chosen makes a massive difference. Highly recommended
