This feels like a well made love letter to more retro horrors like Resident Evil and Silent Hill and I loved it. Fixed camera angles, OPTIONAL tank controls, collect the limited recording tapes to save, puzzles and a need for good resource management. Positives: + Tormented Souls excels heavily in the atmosphere that it sets! The colour palette, the settings and the lighting really set the game up as an atmospheric horror. Loved the setting and designs of the rooms + Great Sound design! The music is so eerie and other sounds make the game feel very immersive. + Smooth, satisfying game play. + Good puzzles! They give you everything you need to work them out and don't leave anything too vague or down to guess work. + The story is pretty good, though a little predictable + Ammo isn't unfairly scarce. You can afford to kill quite a few enemies safely without your ammo reserves running dry. You will probably struggle if you try to kill literally everything in your path though so play smart and use a crowbar when safe (when they're snoozing) + Dodge mechanic gives you i-frames + Has auto-aim which is a huge help with fixed camera angles + Cool and creepy enemy designs Neutral: * The game is hard. This can be a positive if you like a challenge, or a negative if you don't. I personally found it fun for the most part. Negatives: - It can feel genuinely unfair at times. If you run out of a door where the enemy was trying to hit you close to the door, you can walk in there again and it'll still be in the attacking animation and hit you.

6/10 - Pretty good if you evaluate it as a puzzle game. But if you are unprepared for this house of riddles like i was, you may find their amount overwhelming and get frustrated

Crazy good classic survival horror. I intended to play this game a couple years ago, but my computer at the time was a prebuilt POS that did not play nice with the Unity engine, so I had to wait until it was replaced (and it was, in fact, the first game I hopped into once my new rig was completed!) After all this time, I can say without a doubt that this was worth the wait. This game punches well above its weight. The level design, art direction, and overall presentation are not just masterful, it at times exceeds the classic Resident Evil/Silent Hill games, and even feels like a lost evolution in the overall survival horror genre. The atmosphere is something else. A great amount of time was put into building and maintaining tension throughout this game that I hadn't been second guessing decisions this hard since the days when the classic Silent Hill games were still brand new to me! There's several moments that I wish I could list off right here, right now, and even a specific optional section (which, to me, truly set this game apart from the rest), but I am leaving this review as vague as possible as a plea for you to discover them yourself. My only real complaint with this game is certain parts of its dialog, and whether or not it was done as an homage to the classics of its genre or as an unfortunate aspect of the game being made by a small team in a country with a different primary language than my own, I promise that every other aspect of this game more than picks up any slack left by it. A lot of less successful (for a reason!) survival horror games use a terrible "genre twist" around their second act/latter half where instead of retaining the slow burn as the stakes elevate they become bad action games. This fortunately didn't happen in this game. No matter how many new tools you pick up, you are almost always going to feel low on something. This game mimicked a slow, desperate descent into hell from start to end, and I loved it. The next Tormented Souls game is supposed to come out by the end of the year, and i've enjoyed this game so much that the sequel has gone from a game "i'd keep my eye on" to one I am playing on day one. I am beyond excited for what this team has in store, and I hope you will be too by the time you've hit the results screen.

Seeing a lot of reviews about the obscurity of some of the puzzles when most of them just require patience. If you can't be bothered to do that, just look them up. Other than that, gameplay is pretty basic but fun. The game is pretty decent all around and I'm looking forward to the second.

I did not enjoy playing this game. Game has these quirks that if you try can slow down the game to about 15% speed (everything, even transitions from menus) and can't be fixed in-game and you need to restart the whole thing. It would not be a huge issue if the save system wasn't as bad as it can be. You have a limited number of saves and can only save in specific spots. There is no difficulty for neither combat, nor puzzles. All of the inspiration for the story, setting and gameplay is taken straight from Silent Hill and Resident evil and yet they do not implement this feature that was available even on the PS1... I got soft locked when turning on the generator - it went green, you can hear it working, got the achievement and yet everything was still dark and the doors still required power.... amazing. The story is nothing to write home about.
Silent Hill 3 (cult, sacrifice and God) + a bit of Resident evil (mostly the setting) + Fatal Frame (twins where one haunts the other) + time travel. The time travel especially has plot holes as time is a constant and also you can change it somehow - so it is both constant and not. The story utilizes either one depending on the mood it seems. Radiation doesn't affect the main character somehow even though the story emphasises otherwise. Also there are 3 endings. The most annoying thing is that all of the most important parts of the story are placed in logs and diaries. This kills all immersion once you have to stop, pause and read 7 pages of notes to get a bit of info. Given that the voice acting was awful I don't know what to say how they would have fixed this, especially considering the static models during dialogue.
The sound design and the graphics are good, but there is little to no variety with the basic enemy designes. Gameplay-wise this is going to become boring very quickly. Same enemies, one setting - the mansion and a LOT of backtracking. This game is puzzle heavy and feels more like a puzzle game, but man can the backtracking and trying to figure out which of the hints is related to which of those puzzles be annoying. The game also relies on out-of-game knowledge to complete certain puzzles which is dumb if you consider not everyone who plays this is a Christian or uses the same calendar... Overall I was insanely dissapointed with this game
This is great game for fans of old Resident Evil and survival horror
Tormented Souls plays very much like old Resident Evil with fixed camera angles. Though, this game's camera works a little more like Code Veronica where it will move slightly as Caroline Walker makes their way through the section. Combat works as one would expect, but with a back-dash mechanic to help give the player an edge. It might have been a skill issue on my part, but I found that it wasn't easy to "juke" most enemies as I would normally in RE or even a game like Signalis. Inventory management isn't really a thing in Tormented Souls. It might seem like it at first glance, but as far as I can tell, Caroline is capable of holding every single item available in her inventory. In terms of graphics, this game looks fantastic in most cases. The only thing I wish were better are the character textures (as well as some of the cutscene animations). Other than that, the environment and object textures look great. I'm also pretty fond of it's overall art design; it's very close to RE1 Remake, but a lot less gothic. The one thing about this game that I disliked are the puzzle clues. It's not necessarily the puzzles itself, but there are a few of them where the connection between the clue and solution are quite a stretch. I've played all the mainline Resident Evil titles and even Code Veronica X; I never needed a guide for the puzzles in those games, but I absolutely ended up using a guide for a handful of them here. Overall, I'd highly recommend this for anyone looking for a more classic survival horror experience. With the sequel coming out soon, this game will likely be on sale for a very low price.

Competent on a technical level, but atrocious writing making RE1's script look like Shakespeare. I will always back a game keeping the systems of fixed/dolly cameras for beautifully composed and framed cinematic shots that make wandering the house/hospital a joy. This is the main reason I give a positive review. Tank controls are a must for such a camera system, but the camera-relative is serviceable. This game is camp and cringe. While I'd prefer good writing over trash, t's the good kind of trash. Survival horror junk food. Don't take it too seriously and have fun and the fairgrounds' haunted house.

Solid take on the Resident Evil formula. Graphics are amazing, gameplay is good (especailly compared to other indie takes on this genre) but not great. For every puzzle that seemed dumb there was another that made say out loud "Oh that's clever actually." (which is usually the worst part of games like these.) The story is meh and the cognitive dissonance is way off the charts but overall a fun game worth $20 if you like classic Resident Evil.

This game brought back the golden age of survival horror. Fixed camera angles, eerie atmosphere, and clever puzzles — it felt like playing a forgotten gem from the PS2 era. If you grew up with classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Tormented Souls is pure nostalgia. Can’t wait for the sequel!

This game has been one the coolest horror games I’ve played, the atmosphere gripped me since the first moment, the combat is a little hard but once you start using the guns to down the enemies and finishing them off with the crowbar it’s a breeze, the puzzles are great keeps you thinking and it’s satisfying to solve, I loved my time in this game and will 100% support the developers for future games and projects 😍🤍 please keep it coming dual effect!

Very cool story with some very... interesting key events. Insane puzzles (sometimes insane in a bad way) but there are some incredibly helpful spoiler-free guides on Steam that put you on the right track without giving everything away immediately. Animations and voice acting with a charming jank to them. Great art direction, REALLY cool music, great horror, great game.

I can't really understand why it has so many good reviews; it's not the worst game in the world but it's not that enjoyable either. The plot and the twists were so obvious and yet our character is so unbelievably dense that she doesn't understand anything until the end. The antagonist, aside from it being so obvious who they are, has such a basic and lazy motivation, it really felt like 'evil bad character is evil' and that's it, no character development for anyone involved. The voice acting is so bad, the writing, graphics and atmosphere felt so generic to me. The combat is janky and awkward and some of the puzzles were so obscure, even after solving them I was still confused. In terms of survival horror, I don't see any reason to play this over RE or SH.

I really wanted to like this keep but it keeps crashing out. Frequent saving is not an option because of the limited number of save casettes. Interestingly it runs smooth on my older pc (intel 9th gen, rtx 2070 vs amd 9700x 4070 super)

Tormented Souls is a MASSIVE MASSIVE MASSIVE love letter to the old Resident Evil titles, especially the RE1 Remake for Gamecube back in 2002. Unfortunately, I absolutely HATED RE1 Remake, because I found it EXTREMELY TEDIOUS and frustrating to play. Tormented Souls' gameplay is exactly like RE Remake minus the terrible door loading screens. It's FULL OF TEDIOUS BACKTRACKING and A TOTAL LACK OF DIRECTION. Too much hand holding can ruin a game, but this game swings so hard in the complete opposite direction and it hurts the game a lot. Some old "Hardcore" gamers might get their jollies out of struggling on where to go to continue the game, but my time is better spent elsewhere. Searching cabinets for toothpicks in some dark basement just to pry open a can of 7UP is not worth my time. Travel to Paris France so you can press a switch which opens up a door in Moscow Russia, then backtrack to Madrid Spain so you can get the Shrimp Key. Why? Stupid, goofy, ridiculously awkward game design is what you'll find here. Search, search, search. Backtrack, Backtrack, Backtrack. It's the age old Zelda lock and key formula done 1000 times over (only with more tedious). I also find it supremely annoying the game uses the stupid Ink Ribbon system of the old RE games. Just to save your game you must possess a consumable item. The game tries to create this "tense" atmosphere so you worry about when to save your game, but in reality it makes the game unbearable to play and all it does is waste your time when you need to turn off the game and go do something else. This is not good game design and NEVER WAS, even back in 1996 I hated the Ink Ribbon save system. It's amazing there's such a loyal fan base for these kinds of horror games, because I honestly cannot see why people like spending their time on tedious games like this. The game has great atmosphere and I like the darkness mechanics used, though they get old after a while. The dark rooms and graphics are clean and nice to look at. The music is mostly sad piano melodies and other gloomy background noise. Not bad, but nothing I care about. It's trying to emulate Resident Evil music. The save rooms even have these calming tunes. The game tries to be scary, but the amount tediousness and lack of a mission or direction kills the scare factor. It's way more irritating than scary. Unless you are a huge fan of the old resident evil games and have a ton of free time on your hands, you probably want to skip this game. Check out Resident Evil 7 or 8 or other games that are much better and accessible. Tormented Souls will make you feel tormented from playing it. And that's not my idea of a good time.
A compact thrilling adventure into the madness
- Tormented Souls is an oldschool-ish survival horror game with tank controls and little bit of hint toward the puzzles. Pros. - Story is kinda interesting and quite dark. Lots are from reading stuff, but there are cutscenes here and there too. - Tank-control done right. Great camera works and responsive controls. - Environmental design and overall presentation are really great. Especially how light works in this game. - Soundtracks are great. - Pretty immersive with how they handle the puzzles and tools you have. - No need for storage. Caroline just stick all stuffs in her ass like an another dimension pocket. Neutral - Some puzzles are really hard to do with how little the hint is. But overall I really love the puzzle in this game. Finally able to use my monkey brain to solve stuffs rather than pew pew. - I really hate spitting enemy. And the final boss is a massive let down. - Lacking in enemy varieties. Con - Voice acting are really mediocre to bad.
Overall
- Tormented Souls is a nod to the og days of Resident Evil. Actually it's kinda like Resident Evil - Silent Hill hybrid with how the atmosphere and the story go. The camera works for the fixed camera is really great. Controls are responsive. Puzzles are an actual puzzle and enemy even though it's lacking in varieties they are still all almost well design. If you're looking for a survival horror game where it isn't underestimate you as a player. This game is for you.

Owned this for a while and finally got around to it. The puzzles are mind numbing sometimes, but other than that, it's a solid mix of RE and Silent Hill that still comes out as something Unique. Excited to play TS2.

Played the game for a little over an hour, got to the second puzzle of the game where you need to start the generator , game acted as if the generator was still off halting progression any further, none of the fixes on the web worked, sad as i love these old school horror games and was hyped for this one. Refunded.

The original Resident Evil on PS1 is my all-time favorite game, it goes without saying that I absolutely adore survival horror, specially fixed camera angled RE style game. Why do I give a thumbs down? Only one reason, very nonsense and frustrating puzzles that breaks immersion and forces you to pause the game and look up a guide. I was a kid when I played it in 90's, I completed all of them without a guide. The map is atrocious and do not mark anything for you, no resources, keys, your position is not marked with a cross or arrow and when you open the map it does not not default to current floor you are on, instead you need to manually locate "correct floor" every single time. Oh wait you they didn't do it in the old classic RE games, fine but they also didn't have countless of puzzles, riddled in almost every part of the map, it was more like surviving than to solve puzzles, mow down zombies and ask questions later. You have infinite inventory system in this game but main character can't be bothered to carry a notebook that writes down important clues and places? Let me give you an example: You go into a room and see a man circle a dead body with lights, how the fuck should I know that I must replicate this exact movement in a different room to solve a puzzle? Zero clues in notes or characters that you speak with. Okay now that I solved the puzzle, I got a scalpel, I know that locked trap door had ropes which I can cut it with, but I don't remember where the trap door was. The House is gigantic and nothing is marked your, you are expected to have extremely good memory. Again I need to resort to a guide to locate the room, because I ain't re-visiting every fucking room in the house to locate the trap door. The puzzle with heart rhythm is cool but jesus f christ, can't you be slightly more forgiving in the timing? I'm not a trained musician! It took 10-15 minutes to nail it! I have not completed the game but when you look the negative reviews the puzzle example I gave is supposedly one of the "easier" ones. One last negative is that It is very apparent that the game is inspired by the Resident Evil but it also likes to be a bit of Silent Hill at the same time, traversing into alternate dimensions. This makes puzzle solving even more challenging because now you have to deal with and think in occult nonsense, like parading like a idiot around a corpse with a lighter.

Solid game with great nods to classic survival horror games, mostly Silent Hill with Resident Evil's mansion style layout. Puzzles are unique and interesting and requires critical thinking with moderate to little hints. Difficulty is decent, most if not all enemies are in cramped areas so disposing them seems to be the better approach. Atmosphere is top notch and the shadowing is perfect. Dramatic dynamic camera angles from Silent Hill are very present and adds to the tension.

Great game to play if you love classic fixed camera angles and resource managing type of horror game like classic resident evil and silent hill. Its very inspired by the Resident Evil 1 HD remaster and I think that's great. I thought the puzzles were unique, the hospital mansion was very nice and creepy to explore and the aesthetic was amazing. I recommend this game but I do have some criticisms however, this game even for classic survival horror standards can be pretty hard and I feel while some of it was my fault others were because the game was being too stingy with finding resources especially endgame, and especially with tape recorders (the games items needed to save) while I do love classic survival horror like ps1 resident evil and silent hill I do feel like not everything from that era of horror needs to be brought back like ink ribbons or anything that is needed to save your game. I also feel that while the puzzles were unique and interesting I also felt some of them were a bit to obtuse and had to look up a guide multiple times to progress. I would recommend playing Resident Evil 1 HD remaster first if you are knew to this type of game play and trying other ones out too but I feel that once you are better at this then I feel this game is a great time to enjoy. I also thought the demo for the second game was great and I felt it addressed some of my criticisms here too.

Simply Excellent – A Love Letter to Classic Survival Horror There’s a reason Tormented Souls has garnered so many glowing reviews—and after giving it a chance, I can wholeheartedly say it deserves every bit of praise. I started with the Tormented Souls 2 demo, and from that moment, I was hooked. The game delivers a masterful blend of Silent Hill 2-style atmosphere and fixed camera angles, paired with combat that feels ripped straight from the golden age of Resident Evil. What truly impressed me is how seamlessly these retro-inspired elements have been modernised. The camera work and character movement feel smooth and intuitive, never clunky or dated. The level of environmental detail is fantastic, and for me, this is the closest a game has come to replicating the raw, nerve-shredding horror I felt playing Outlast 1. It's immersive, gripping, and drenched in atmosphere. Bottom line: this is an easy recommendation. If you're even remotely a fan of classic survival horror (or not as I wasn't until this game, this gave me the chance to feel what Silent Hill 3 players must have experienced), Tormented Souls is a must-play.
