I like Slay the Spire, but I am not a huge fan. Slay the Spire is good. Monster Train... is also good. In my eyes equally. Monster Train doesn't just steal the concept of its predecessor, but brings a lot of new and actually functioning ideas. There's more "deck kinds" than in StS, but the builds feel a bit less complex, more intuitive and definitely less RNG-based. Up to you if you see it as a positive or negative. Ultimately though, there's once again no other goal than to finish the basic run with harder and harder restrictions, which is one of the issues I have with this type of game. Still a good fun for a fair amount of hours.

very good and fun tower defense/deckbuilder hybrid. my main complaint is that for all the randomness induced variety, in practice the narrative arc tends to look pretty similar from run to run. this isn't necessarily good or bad to be fair, but i do find it a little homogenous at times. still working my way up to cov 25 but i suspect it's not going to change my opinion much there. also, the last divinity is a bit of a let down for a final fight.

A great roguelite deckbuilder. Plays differently from Slay The Spire but in a good and unique way

Now that Monster Train 2 has been released, you should just get Monster Train 2 - it is a strict improvement over the original. The only thing I think it has that the sequel doesn't is a multiplayer mode that I don't think is big enough to make it a better pick than the sequel. That said, this is still a very good game - lots of build variety, lots of potential for breaking the game, and a high but fair amount of challenge on the highest difficulties. I like the game loop - it's unique among roguelikes without feeling forced like a lot of "unique" roguelikes out there can feel sometimes. There's just very little reason to buy this over MT2 unless you really want to support the devs.

What started out as a fun game ended up as a game where I lose 9 out of 10 times due to the game increasing the difficulty curve after each win. You need to scale super hard which in turn requires you to be lucky enough to get the correct combo cards offered in each pack. That coupled with unbalanced clans and heroes decreases fun and replayability, especially because wins feel like they were only possible because you got lucky.

Late to the party, started playing when seeing the positive reception the sequel was getting. I'll be playing this more and then probably picking the sequel up when I'm done! Probably don't need one more review saying positive things about this game, but every little helps I guess

Great game, tons of content. The factions of which I've used 4 out of 6 all feel different and the ally mechanic mean effectively there are 30 runs to beat. Every decision feels meaningful esp. with the DLC and few choices are easy. Multiple strats are effective.

This game is awesome! It's the only deck building game where I feel like it truly wants you to win, instead of stacking RNG against you every run. Every loss makes it apparent my build wasn't good enough, and every victory makes me excited for the next level.

A great roguelike deckbuilder with tons of build combinations. Two particular features that stood out compared to other games in the genre: [olist] [*]You play defense with enemies coming in waves each battle. [*]You get a map showing the bosses and all the possible stops at the start of every run. This feature means that you can avoid working on a build only to get hard countered by a boss later because you got unlucky RNG in the boss selection. It makes runs feel more strategic while greatly reducing the likelihood of unsatisfying deaths due to uncontrollable randomness. [/olist]

Runs are the exact right length of time and making use of modifiers to runs adds a surprising amount of replayability without being overwhelming.

Initially I was leery of Monster Train, as at first blush it gave me mobile game vibes. Then I remembered that Balatro is a mobile game, and is also a masterpiece. Monster Train follows a fairly standard draft-pick deck format ala Slay the Spire, but does enough to distinguish itself that I would not call it a rip of StS. The presentation is all stylized and fun, the concept is unique, and the gameplay allows for build flexibility and design. Also, no AI artwork. It's sad to say that in this day and age that needs to be said.

Very fun mix of tower defense and roguelike deckbuilder with easy to understand mechanics, a lot of possible synergies and playstyles make it plenty replayable.

Amazing game! I put about 250 hours into the base game on Game Pass before buying the version with the DLC at full price on Steam. Only game I've ever done that for, so that tells you how much I appreciate it. So much depth to this game. You could easily put over 500 hours into it and still be learning new strats. These types of games aren't for everyone but if you're even a little bit into them, there's no reason not to play Monster Train.

Good deck-building roguelike. The difficulty is just right, and you can also lose a pretty good run if you aren't careful!

The best of the deckbuilders. Very approachable and the strategy is both straightforward and intricate at the same time. Very fun.

There is little to complain about. It is a card game that is exceptionally mentally engaging. It is all about finding synergies and overpowered strategies to dish out more than the enemy can take. With how many clan combinations, cards, upgrades and relics there are there really is no lack of variety. My 100 hours are well deserved. I never thought this game could get better, but somehow it's sequel takes it several steps further, using this game as the base it was built upon, quite literally. Which is unique, as it is not really a new game, but more like a super colossal update to this game or a dlc of unparalleled size. Impressive! 9/10 Burgers.

Monster Train is good, but not as good as Reddit users claim. Similar to Balatro, but Balatro hooked me in for 20 hours. Monster Train hooked me for about 4. I think the most fun I've had with a similar genre was Slice and Dice, but then you just get bored and move on to a more interesting genre. I'll buy Monster Train 2 when it goes on sale, and give it a whirl for a few hours. Monster Train is worth a purchase if it's on sale.

I like this game and brought it on a sale and honestly has a lot of replay value. The three lane, upgrade system for both spells and units, Champions etc. All of these systems interact with each other well and finding combinations is really fun.
