Despite the puzzles not being super involved this time around, I think TWB is easily the best Syberia game <3
The atmosphere, music, and immersive qualities are stunning. The voice acting, unlike in Syberia 3, is wonderful all-round. This is by far my favourite performance Sharon Mann has given as Kate; she's managed to inject so much more personality into her on top of what I had already come to love from the first three games. Thankfully they also found a great VA for Oscar this time, and while he doesn't have the same type of charm as he does in S1+2, he has a new one that works just as well <3
I do think the story + dialogue is slightly heavy-handed, and most of the major plot points I saw coming from a mile away. I'm also not at all sold on Dana's relationship with Leon, despite it being a major focal point for her story. I don't personally believe in love at first sight, and it just felt very contrived and honestly a little derogatory to see Dana be such a lost-lamb to a man she'd hardly even spoken to. I do like Leon on his own, but they should have done something more to establish the relationship better before tying Dana's character so heavily to it.
I'm also not at all sold on the motivation for Kate's initial journey in TWB. Without spoiling, it essentially boils down to a character saying "Hey wouldn't it be cool to go find this lady in this painting?", and then Kate decides to dedicate the next year of her life to doing just that. The context forgives it a little, but it honestly just didn't seem like a strong enough motivator to warrant the effort she goes through given the circumstances her life is in. It's a shame, because the plot later reveals elements that would ABSOLUTELY justify Kate wanting to find out more about this painting, but that only kicks in about halfway through.
Oh, and the last complaint I have is the gas-lighting by Olivia. There were hints of it in Syberia 3, too, but in this game it's way worse. I can understand Olivia being so entitled and frigid as to blame Kate for everything that's happened, but I just cannot see why Kate gets no chance to defend herself. Olivia cheated on Kate with her then-fiancé, but at no point can she blast her for it. Olivia also tries to frame Cantin as a good person, despite him drugging and abducting Kate in S3, and again, Kate just doesn't say anything. An option to tell her to go screw herself would have been much appreciated </3
Those are really the only 3 sore spots for me. The rest of the game is wonderful, engaging, beautiful, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. The ending has tied a few people in a knot, because with the passing of Benoît Sokal (rest in peace :c) the series future is up in the air, and this game ends on something of a pseudo-cliffhanger. Keeping my fingers crossed that we do end up seeing a 5th game, and that maybe Benoît's son Hugo can take the reins <3
