Pharaoh™: A New Era

Pretty good if you like the original Pharaoh from back in the day. I wish we had more updated games from the old classics come out. We need a Caesar game. :)

I had a great time until I hit a few game-breaking bugs that soured my experience. In one map, the population counter started showing 94 more people than actually lived in my city. I found out about it because it was impossible to obtain perfect physician coverage. I saved the game, removed every single building in my city and the population counter showed 94. Oh well, just a few hours wasted investigating the problem. I ended up modifying my save files in a hex editor just to set the population counter back to 0. In another map, the ferries just randomly stopped working. I found out about it when, all of a sudden, housing in the entire city degraded due to a lack of pottery and the pottery industry was located on the other side of the Nile. Replacing the ferries, rebuilding the storage yards, tweaking the delivery settings, reloading the saves, nothing worked. Great, another few hours wasted to replay the map, hoping this time the bug won't reappear. I really want to like this remake but it's too frustrating to loose a few hours of progress time and time again due to a random bug. I'm fine with visual glitches when placing juggler booths next to each other. I can accept monument workers disappearing under a ton of bricks. I'm even OK with an infinitely-looping sound of arrows during combat resolution or the lackluster combat system itself. However, bugs that waste my time? Come on, it's a game, I want to have a good time building a monument for the ages, as opposed to remembering the one I built 20 years ago in the original game that somehow was more polished without all the fancy resolution. Sigh.

took my money as a die hard original fan raised my expectation and ruined an absolute favorite gaming experience of mine, by not implementing the combat system.. what the hell guys? i wish i could give this a good review it is a better game in every other aspect but what set Pharaoh apart and frankly on throne, was being the only game in existence with a perfect blend of city building and RTS combat. No one has topped the original game and these devs have seemingly gone out of their way to solidify that fact.

I grew up with this game, and this is made well. so i do recommend it as its a great game. But honestly, the old one looks better. I'm not a fan of this cartoon look. Im not a fan that they removed the old realistic cut scenes either.

Great remaster of the original that I used to play on a early 2000's Compaq. Appreciate the changes made for modernization, and will happily continue to play.

city building at its finest! if you want a city building game that's full of history, this is it!

This game makes me feel like a little kid again with its nostalgic music score and story. The graphics has been well improved than the previous version. Hats off to the developers for enhancing the gaming experience while also preserving the integrity of the game.

I got this mainly for nostalgia, as I played the original back in the day on a windows 98 PC. Happy to say it has most of what I remember from the original, plus some quality of life improvements. The menu is VERY different though, so it took me a while to find everything, I don't think it's as intuitively organised. Haven't gotten into combat - think one mission I built an army and just sent off troops. Not sure if it's just that city, but if it's for all of them it's kinda pointless having them without a mild danger of Nubian warriors levelling half your city.

For example the military and siege systems are essentially non-existent. You have no say on battalion positions and arrangements other than just "send aid" buttons and waiting until rival army's arrive. The textures of character models seem a little too childish with a sort of mobile game aesthetic compared to the original in my personal opinion. With all that said I would still say it is a successful redesign of a classic city builder. Certain improvement in performance, audio, graphics and bugs all together. I loved the original game in fact i still have it on cd with the instruction book and poster. So happy that someone remade this game sure it's not perfect but neither was the OG. This new game has some great additions like having a global pool of workers insted of having to send someone out to find workers.

A clean, simple, strategic game! A classic!

I have latest version and cannot even get past the first village of housing people! Is there a glitch that needs to be fixed?? I can build houses, but NO water, Hunting lodges, NOTHING else is available. Just sits there. A complete disappointment as I love this oldie but goodie, but not anymore.

It is very similar to the original. a few changes. some things i would have kept the same. but i do like the flat mode, very handy. - Pharaoh player since 2002.

It's a classic. Building various cities across the Egyptian landscape, managing the people, war, health, religion, all sorts. There's something very kind and chilled about it, and thank goodness they improved the invasion sequences - they were an absolute swine in the old version! I've spent over 600 hours on this at the time of writing, and I'll sink the same again over the coming years. Well worth the money

Great game, but Culture is way too bugged.

On the fence with this one but leaning on the negative. It's good if you're a fan of the original and want more of the same, plus some quality of life improvements It's not great because there are so many things that need fixing: no way to handle hostile animals, walls and defenses dont do anything, war is reduced to an autobattler. Finally, I dont remember if this was also an issue with the original, but it gets extremely boring after you figure out the economy early for each stage-- there are not a lot of events in the game to spice up a playthrough.
