It's a tense triller with a good singular vision, terrific art and effective execution.
Location sctructure could've been done better, but it's not that bad. Gameplay is fine for what it is and there's a story mode if you really suck at hiding.
My gripes with the game are purely philosophical in nature and, I know this very well, purely subjective.
I find North American obsession with Biblical mumbo-jumbo and Christian Cult horror both predictable and simply stupid at this point. While the story is delivered quite effectively, the plot itself is a very basic story about a huge cliche. Notes are simply Bible-esque gibberish sprinkled on top of it and hardly work to add some additional layers.
Plus the game is too lax with overloading players with hyperviolence and soft taboo themes. In-your-face method was kinda uneasy and effective for an hour or so, but the guro overload just dulls the overall plot very quickly. Considering that the finale was somewhat seen from a mile away, it hardly worked for me at all.
Honestly, I think the narrative lead should try to read something outside of Western interpritation of the Holy Bible for a change and team's new SP-only game should at least try be more subtle with heavy stuff, akin of recent Silent Hill 2 remake.
Nonetheless I find the game a very competent and really focused foray into the Body Thriller genre and still recommend it despite lacking in imagination around the whole Faith schtick.
It's 7.5/10, but boy it's a solid one.

This is my honest review of Outlast 2.
Listen—I love the game, and you might be asking, “If you love it, why are you giving it a mostly negative review?” The answer is simple: the game is WAY too drawn out.
The first Outlast perfected the formula—it was short, tight, and terrifying. Outlast 2, by contrast, is long, repetitive, and, at times, just plain boring. The biggest offender? The endless flashbacks to the high school. The first few were clever, but by the 15th time, it felt comically forced. It becomes less “psychological horror” and more “oh look, spooky guy—run again.” It stops being scary and starts being annoying.
Instead of feeling tense and sneaking through areas, I found myself just sprinting past everything to get it over with. The immersion breaks when the gameplay loop becomes so repetitive and predictable.
Truthfully, they could cut 60% of the walking simulator content and the game would still hit the same emotional and narrative beats—and honestly, it would be a much tighter experience if they did. If the devs make another game in this style (besides Outlast: Trials), I beg you: do not pack it with this much filler between actual plot points. It just becomes exhausting.
If you want to make a longer game, make it interesting—not just a repetitive cycle of wandering around and looting houses for batteries and bandages.

As with the first one it's fine but tends more towards frustrating than frightening. Running around in circles in pitch black is scary but by the nth time you've been killed the same way and you still can't see a way out it quickly becomes tedious.

If you can make it all the way through and deal with the chasing, hiding and dying, you will experience the most glorious and euphoric boss deaths in the history of horror games.

9/10 – One of the best horror games I’ve played.
It doesn’t rely on cheap jumpscares, but still keeps you tense the whole time. The visuals are great, the sound design is intense, and the atmosphere is insane. Story is a bit confusing at first, but gets better as you go.
If you’re into psychological horror and can handle the pressure, this one’s a must-play. Not for the faint of heart.

I wasn't the biggest outlast fan, but after playing the sequel - i gotta say, i appreciate it more.
This game falls into "where's my wife" genre of survival horror as you are trying to do that, while navigating through village full of unfriendly locals. It's natural, that sequel will be bigger, however, if you're going to do that, could you maybe improve the gameplay by adding like puzzles or something? I felt that the first game had already a problem with being at times quite repetetive, but this one just pushes it into next level. It's twice as long and i mentally checked out by the halfway point. It doesnt help, that it sometimes has the "where am i supposed to go" quality, which can be very frustrating when you are running for your life. They added mechanic, that allows you to view your recordings, so why wasn't that used for something else, rather than have protagonist make a single comment? Zombie redneck Scooby Doo chases aren't gonna carry your entire game.
Speaking of excess - violence - I seriously think, that this franchise would be better off being fun schlocky gore rides akin to saw movies, because they obviously try to shock with it's brutality. That doesn't work, due to how common and tryhard it is - you see it so often, that it quickly becomes just eye rolling.
But horror games with weak gameplay can be redeemed by strong story and great atmosphere - it has neither of those. I suppose they wanted to be slightly more sophisticated, with it's commentary on religion and attempts at fleshing out the main character by adding the school flashbacks, but it fails. I didn't care about the protagonist and from what i can gather, the hallucinatory sequences could have been cut, since they don't really connect with the plot. The aformentioned commentary is shallow and a bit pretentious as well. There was a particulary memorable cringeworthy line, which sounded like it was written by an angsty 15 - year old. The ending is just weird and I had to do a research in order to understand what even happened and if what i found out is correct, then it's very unsatisfying.
I feel like devs were a bit too over their heads. It's a bloated experience with a weak plot and a monotonous gameplay. I would recommend any amnesia game over this, because even the weakest entry has at least solid writing chops and actually manage to be somewhat scary. To sum up - I didn't really care for this one.

Outlast 2 is worse than the original + Whistleblower DLC in every way except production value (the graphics).
The gameplay and UI is a step backward; everything from using items to looking at collected documents/recordings is clunky and unintuitive. New "features" like using the camera to hear which direction enemies are in are pointless and not useful outside of a couple sections where you're forced to use the mechanic. Every time you get slightly hit (including sections that are scripted and required to progress), the screen obnoxiously floods with red to the point you can't see anything until you can bandage (which isn't always possible). Half the game is foggy and hard to navigate, and using night vision doesn't improve visibility in many areas.
The worst parts are the boring, drawn-out school segments where you run around and arbitrarily interact with objects/hide/etc. There are FAR too many of these, and they wore out their welcome almost immediately. The story and antagonists are walking cliches; if the game came out more recently, I'd say AI wrote them. Nothing was scary either; the only thing that scares me in Outlast 2 is the thought of dying of boredom during another too-long school flashback.
I played it through to the conclusion because I knew it was a fairly short game, and I really enjoyed the original Outlast and Whistleblower. Had it been longer, I wouldn't have wasted my time giving it a chance until the end.

Outlast 2, developed by Red Barrels, is a harrowing descent into psychological and religious horror that builds on the terrifying legacy of its predecessor while carving a distinct identity through narrative ambition and environmental design. Set in the remote Arizona desert, the game follows journalist Blake Langermann as he searches for his missing wife, Lynn, after their helicopter crashes near a backwoods cult compound. From the first moments, Outlast 2 establishes a tone of unrelenting dread, eschewing conventional jump scares for sustained psychological torment. The game swaps the claustrophobic asylum corridors of the first Outlast for open, yet no less oppressive, rural environments—abandoned farms, decaying churches, and nightmarish schools—where every shadow hides potential danger.
What sets Outlast 2 apart is its deeply disturbing and layered narrative, steeped in religious fanaticism, guilt, and trauma. The story weaves between the “real” world of cult violence and the increasingly surreal flashbacks to Blake’s traumatic past, blurring the line between hallucination and reality. The game’s heavy use of symbolism and unreliable narration demands attention and interpretation, making the experience feel more cerebral than its predecessor. Technically, the game excels with stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 4—dynamic lighting, weather effects, and highly detailed textures contribute to an overwhelming sense of immersion. The audio design is equally masterful; distant cries, whispering voices, and a pulsating ambient score keep players constantly on edge.
Gameplay retains the core mechanics of the series: there is no combat, only flight and stealth. Armed with only a camcorder and its night vision function, players must sneak past or flee from grotesque enemies, including the towering prophet Sullivan Knoth and his deranged followers. This design choice reinforces the feeling of vulnerability but can also lead to frustration. Trial-and-error sequences and some overly scripted chases occasionally break immersion, and the lack of meaningful interaction outside of running and hiding may wear thin for some players. Yet, these limitations are in service of a thematic vision that emphasizes helplessness and psychological erosion.
Ultimately, Outlast 2 is a bold, unsettling game that pushes the boundaries of horror storytelling in interactive media. Its controversial themes and intense imagery aren’t for the faint of heart, but for those willing to endure its psychological brutality, it offers a thought-provoking and unforgettable experience. It doesn’t just aim to scare—it aims to disturb, to linger in your mind long after the credits roll.

Outlast 2 is what happens when a game mistakes "disturbing" for "scary."
Every five minutes you're either being chased, hiding in a barrel, or watching something gross for shock value. It's less survival horror and more of a screaming obstacle course with extra blood.
The game throws so much blood, nudity, and religious symbolism at you that I started to wonder if it was made by an edgy teenager who just read The Bible and Saw in the same week.
The story is a confusing mess, the gameplay is just “run, hide, repeat,” and the scares? Oh, you mean the same recycled jumpscare that screams in your face like a YouTube prank video?
I’m not scared, I’m just tired.
2/10 feels like horror made by someone who's never actually been scared.

Honestly, compared to the first game this just isnt as story rich or scary...
Outlast you are investigating a cool story-line and get trapped and go deeper and deeper into an insane asylum and discover the most crazy ending.
This Outlast your plane crashes and your just running away for rednecks over and over, no mini-bosses that are scary and are easily forgettable.
5/10 - Good for a casual who wants to waste 3-4hrs on pointless story with terrible ending.

If you like being sodomized relentlessly then this game is for you. All ingredients for stereotypical horror are there: cheap jump-scares, aimless stumbling in the dark, revolting gore etc. The funny thing is, the game is not even that scary. It's more annoying than anything else. I need probably one more session to finish it and I just can't wait to never touch this POS again.
I think I bought the game on Steam Sale for less than 2€ and I still feel robbed.
I obviously do NOT recommend.

If scary movies doesn't do it for you, this game will. Trust me, I made my room dark, enabled HDR on my OLED monitor and cranked up the volume. I was so ready, but could not move further than the first scene.
If you want to finish the game:
1. Play in a light controlled room
2. Enhance the shadows
3. Make your friend watch (Preferably a caring mom or two)
If you know what you're seeking, which is absolute terror, than this game is awesome.
Personally, I'll take a little break from it :)

Outlast 2 on the outside seems to be a very different game than outlast 1. it almost feels like a resident evil 7 rather than an outlast game, but trust me this game is just as great and very much in-spirit of the original outlast. You are still as defenseless as always with your only options being running, hiding or dying. but where the first game felt more grounded with very few supernatural elements this game leans very heavily into the supernatural and huge biblical implications. while the first game used religion as a method of cope for the poor devils at the mount massive asylum, this game's main 2 factions all have very heavy religious (or lack of) religious undertones.
It's still the same gameplay-wise to the first game, and I have to admit I have a thrill for the chase and hiding, so barely slipping by enemies while being hunted is always fun for me.
one thing this game improves upon the original is via the microphone mechanic (thankfully Blake's camera has a microphone) and it allows you to hear and know the direction of enemies behind walls.
while remaining in-spirit for the gameplay the settings wildly differ and the overarching plot is greater.
In conclusion. this game is pretty much equal in terms of fun and enjoyment compared to the first game, but I would be lying if I didn't say the first outlast was closer to my heart purely for nostalgia.

In my opinion, Outlast 2 is a bit of a misnomer. Although their bones are the same, both Outlast and Outlast 2 can stand on their own as unique experiences; you need not play the former to enjoy Outlast 2. Furthermore, Outlast 2 has a variety of unique features which make it different, but not necessarily worse or better, than Outlast.
Unlike its predecessor, which stays more-or-less grounded the entire time, Outlast 2 takes on a psychological bent, diving into themes of hallucination, trauma, and guilt. This is exemplified by flashback scenes which detail the main character Blake Langermann's past. Although some say these scenes were jarring, in my opinion, they were actually some of the most intense and engaging parts of the game.
The two games also differ significantly in their environment. Instead of taking place in a dilapidated asylum, Outlast 2 explores a remote town in the Arizona mountains filled with crazed cultists. Because of this, the game feels much less claustrophobic than Outlast, and many cite this reason as to why the first game is more scary than the second. While I do agree that the setting of 1 was better, I still think that Outlast 2 is unsettling in its own unique way. It's more of "what bizarre horrors will I run into" instead of "imminent death".
Outlast 2's gameplay builds upon its predecessor's while making some changes. The core mechanic of avoiding enemies while not being able to fight back is obviously kept. However, there are changes made to movement and the HUD. I also found that Outlast 2 is much more focused on stealth, as compared to Outlast, in which almost every enemy can simply be outrun. One gripe about this game is that it's sometimes not very obvious where you need to go, which can lead to some utter BS moments. This is overcome with some patience, but it does occasionally ruin the tension. Outlast 1 had much better map design in this regard.
Ultimately, Outlast 2 succeeds because it genuinely feels relatable. Blake doesn't have access to stockpiles upon stockpiles of conveniently placed ammo to be able to dispatch enemies with. All he can do is run away. Nor is he some sort of superhuman capable of extreme acts of bravery in the face of this horror. He seems genuinely distressed to be separated from his wife, and the voice acting conveys this well, despite a few cheesy moments.

If you’re looking for a game that’ll mess with your head and make you question, well, everything, this is it. Red Barrels really outdid themselves with this one—it's not just a sequel, it’s a full-on fever dream in the middle of the Arizona nowhere. You’re Blake, an investigative journalist (because, of course, journalists in horror games never catch a break), trying to find your wife after your chopper goes down smack in the middle of cult central. Honestly, it’s the worst Airbnb ever.
Right off the bat, this game isn’t interested in the usual, cheap jump scares. Nope. It goes for that gnawing, inescapable dread that just sits in your gut. The vibe is relentless. You want comfort? Forget it. Outlast 2 is all about that “I want to go home” energy.
And the setting? Way bigger and creepier than the first game’s loony bin. We’re talking rotted-out barns, churches that feel like they’re judging you, and landscapes that scream “run.” Everywhere you go, it just oozes this sense of, “You are absolutely not supposed to be here, buddy.” The story goes hard on religious madness, guilt, and trauma—it’s like someone took a blender to your nightmares and hit purée. Half the time you’re not even sure if what you’re seeing is real, or if your brain’s just short-circuiting from all the horror. Keeps you guessing, I’ll give it that.
Visually? Outlast 2 is gorgeous in a “I wish I wasn’t looking at this” kind of way. Unreal Engine 4 really brings out every rotting fencepost and shadowy corner. The sound design is killer too—random whispers, creepy music, and noises that have you spinning around in real life just to make sure no one’s behind you. It’s immersive as hell, but in the “I’m never sleeping again” sense.
Gameplay sticks to the Outlast tradition: you don’t fight, you hide and run. That camcorder with night vision is your best (and only) friend—until the batteries die, and then you’re just fumbling around in the dark, probably swearing. The stealth bits can get a little tiresome. Sometimes it feels like you’re stuck in a cycle of “get caught, reload, try again, repeat,” which is… eh, a little much. But honestly, that’s part of the panic.
Ultimately, Outlast 2 is not for the faint of heart. It doesn’t just want to scare you, it wants to haunt you. If you’re looking for a lighthearted horror flick, keep walking. But if you want a game that’ll burrow into your psyche and leave you thinking about it long after you put down the controller, this is the one. Just… maybe play with the lights on, yeah?

Holy shi this game is peak. I played it almost a decade after release and its still one of the best game experiences I have had in years. Steam says I have 7 hours played, but it really felt twice as long. I would recommend playing it all in one go, otherwise you do lose your immersion and momentum. The game is best when you feel like you are constantly on the run, a buttcheek workout if you will.

This is one of those weird games where the audience completely misunderstands the plot. I don't fault the game for this, I fault the general audience. This game is a masterpiece and far more terrifying than most games out there. The true horror of this game is often what's not shown explicitly and that makes it truly wonderful. The gameplay is ok in terms of horror, but I play these games to be scared, and scare me... it did. A truly wonderful work of art containing some of the darkest of what humanity is capable of.

I bought this on sale, to scare the scareless fam. They couldn't take more than one hour of it. Not because it was too scary, but because finding your way in pitch black is just not fun. You run out of batteries in your camera in seconds, and then chasing nothing but blackness. I even turned the gamma all the way up, increased the brightness and contrast in my TV, and it was completely useless. Trying to convince them to keep playing was more frustrating than almost any game I've played. A fool's errand.
I wish there were an option to at least get a little bit of light, so I could convince others to play. But as a seasoned game veteran, I took over the controls and after running into pure black walls myself, there is no reason to continue. Definitely don't recommend.

I will say the story is made up just to make a bucks off the original formula. You know, trying to save your wife after a plane crash, but then gets taking by heretics. And yes, they happened to crash around a town that is abandoned by heretics. Yep. Oh well, right? Still, I enjoyed the first, I enjoyed the second. This time you're more outside in the town then inside like the original. You're still defenseless. You have to rely on crouch walking, prone and staying much in the shadows and tall grass to survive while using the only light source item you have, your camera. 7/10. Solid game.

Years ago when I was but a wee lad I played the first entry in the Outlast series with my best friend from school at the time. We even took it upon ourselves to record our playthrough and upload it on Youtube. All I remember was that we kept screaming at the top of our lungs, because, duh, what else do you do when playing a horror game?
I always was curious how this one compared to the original, and why it seems like it is purposefully being left behind by many of the game fans. It was on sale (even cheaper than the first game, how does that make sense?) so naturally, this was the time to see for myself. I am not a horror game fan or enthusiast. Frankly, I do not like the feeling horror gives me most of the time. This however worked for me because I think that the game contains a more underlying horror, that of people on multiple factions fully dedicated to their cause stopping at nothing to accomplish the desired goal. While some might say that it is a cliche critique of religion, I found this to be about someone's guilt finally catching up with them at the worst possible time more than anything else,
The environments you end up running and crawling your way through look great, and I can confirm in 2025 that the visuals of this game hold up very well. Marta was just plain scary and a great presence to have throughout the game, her voice actress captured the character perfectly. There's lots of blood and good scares, which makes for an experience that does not relent... if you play the game correctly.
Outlast 2 features areas that are more open, even containing optional zones to 'explore' (mostly for the purposes of finding batteries for your trusty camera and bandages, which are generally useless). While this change is appreciated, it can sometimes lead to moments where it is simply not clear where to go in order to progress. In similar other instances, progress was locked behind arbitrary actions, like entering a toilet stall, and in all honesty I think this could have been done better: either make it so clear what needs to be done that it is impossible to miss or make it so that players can choose multiple different ways of achieving the same goal.
While some moments can be frustrating due to this aforementioned issue, leading the player to restart the same section several times making the game temporarily tension-less, I do appreciate that Red Barrels seemed to actually be trying harder with this story than the one of the first (although my memory is hazy). Recommend giving it a shot if you are at all an Outlast enjoyer, especially if it is short to get through and cheap.
