When I first started this game, I met this cowboy-looking fellow who insisted to me that he'd never received a single gift or handout in his entire life. Since I happened to have some spare jerky, I decided to give this man his first gift ever. He said to me that to call it "good" was an overstatement and to call it "bad" would be overreaching in the opposite direction. This is how I met Cooper, my favorite character in the game.
The main story is really fun with lots of twists and turns. I love how this game has the balls to have three key characters betray the town and then be removed permanently (this also might be a decision tree, where you need to pick three characters over three other characters about midway through the game, to balance the town friendship upgrades.) I also found it entertaining that the most efficient way to make friends with people in the early game is to say hello and then whoop their butt in the arena each day.
I recommend only romancing one character per playthrough. I romanced a botanist and a character that was later revealed to be a fed. While the game does let you have multiple girlfriends at once, things kinda fall apart at marriage (sorry, you can't build a harem - I tried.) When I married the botanist, the fed sent me a seething letter in the mail and it reset our relationship to associate. I didn't mind because I get a kick outta feds suffering but the consequences of having more than one relationship is something to keep in mind. Also, there's apparently a "caught cheating" metric where even just juggling multiple girlfriends and avoiding marriage could be problematic.
The minor gripes I have about this game are related to the item descriptions (learning to toggle on item descriptions will solve like 90% of your early game confusion). However, there are a few descriptions that are a little to vague for me. Instead of telling me an item can be found by "log", "quarry", or kill a monster, how about including where on the map? You'll eventually memorize where everything is but you'll spend a while wondering around. I still haven't figured out where Yellow Lavender grows - as far as I can tell, you can only get it through a gift in the mail. Also, the finale of the game is a bit of a letdown. Everything leads up to a certain six star commission and once you build it, you sorta ride around the map and the mayor tells you the story's over and it's time to feel sad now. Like, Lady, I haven't even gotten married yet and I still need to clear the final dungeon. Also, that's the one and only time you'll ever have a reason to mine nano material. Your endgame workshop will be able to crank out 6 star commissions in a single day but they never give you another 6 star commission again.
However, the bottom line is I highly recommend this game. The real climax is when you launch the main villain into space about 75% of the way through, which is fantastic and awesome. There's also heists, hijinks, and intrigue along the way.
