Very solid game. Plays uniquely compared to others in genre and brings interesting ideas to the table. Got it on sale and did not regret 1 bit.

I keep trying to get into this game but one major issue is holding me back. I have poor vision and have the UI cranked to 100% and somethings are just too hard to see. The yield amounts are tiny and indistinguishable and I'm sick of squinting at the monitors to tell what they are. And I'm not a fan of the big convoluted wandering random territory borders that are also hard to see. I don't know how many times I've built an outpost and realized that a resources is in another territory even though it is a hex away. I wish they would have ditched this territory system for something closer to Civ. Another issue: you can't tell which unit is selected if you have multiple similar units in an area. The menus and info screens are also completely random with info dumps all over the place that take a lot of getting used to. I want to like this game so bad but when I can't physically see what is going on... I just can recommend it. Devs: please don't forget about the OG gaming community with our aging eyes.

If you like games like Civilization (VI and all previous ones), but want something new (like new and better Civilization game), then Humankind should be your choice. Please save yourself and don't waste your money and time on Civilization VII - sadly it's unfinished and a complete failure.

I get lost in this game. I create my own scenarios in my head as I play, lost for hours. It's tedious, but in a very satisfying way. I prefer this to Civ6, which I also love. Civ2 is fantastic, but I can't run it anymore. Yes, I'm old. Anywho, great game.

It took me a long while to give this game a fair shake and boy am I glad I did! A failed Civ 7 launch and a Beta True Starting Locations mod later (ask for it on the Humankind Discord server!) I can honestly say this is one of the better 4X out there. Get it on sale and try it yourself would be my recommendation!

Being very disappointed with the newest Civilization (7), I tried Humankind, and I love it. It has a few issues, but overall it's much more enjoyable than both the latest Civilization releases. A few things do however need to be fixed: Overlapping and sticky notifications - too many, too pointless, and often on top of each other and demanding individual closing. Annoying and time consuming. Another thing is a weird omission: Why no mini map? It is desperately needed and should contain alerts of enemy actions. Lastly, don't build an embassy, or you'll be dealing with never-ending AI requests. Add an option to say "Don't ask me again". But this is a great game! Especially the battles are very dynamic, even if it sometimes causes the game to hang. Very highly recommended, especially to disillusioned Civ fans.

I've played well over 1k hours in both civ 5 and civ 6. Picked up humankind on a big discount just to check it out and didn't get around to playing it for over a year. Love the game. It's beautiful. Combat is fun and more interesting than civ. Terrain implications are cool and well fleshed-out. Culture and Science trees are intersting. Love the dual currency with both money and...purple culture stars...whatever they're called? victory point mechanics are fun and i love the diverse number of ways you can earn them. Diplomacy with civs and neutral city-states is interesting. 80 hours in I can't say I 100% get all the mechanics of the game, like the implications of faith outside of the basic religion tenent picking, culture spread to adjacent empires, etc... but 'twas the same with civ 6 for a while. Based on reviews, this game seemed to be disappointing upon release, but it looks like they've fixed most player complaints from launch and have enhanced the game. Might be my civ 6 replacement for now since apparently civ 7 is still trash (haven't played it yet, so can't say for sure, but the reviews aren't promising). Very enjoyable 4X. Overall I recommend it, especially at a discounted price.

It's quite complicated and took a bit to get into. But once the game gets going and you understand the mechanics it's actually quite fun. I would recommend. Only thin is maybe a better tutorial at the begining of each era

okay, so was hesitant to write a review. I don't like writing negative ones, and this one is really border between the two. So going to recommend playing it for the experience. it is neat at first and actually very playable. I have over 129 hours in it and so that kind of shows I did like it more than a bit. :) The problem is that, well, once you figure out the game mechanics, the game doesn't really lend well to different approaches. You can win with different approaches, but at times it gets really..painful and a bit off. Not sure how to describe that feeling. I admit i was super excited about another alternative to Civilization V and VI. (Don't look at how long I played those. :) ) But all in all I would recommend playing it for the experience and maybe you will enjoy it a bit more.

I really tried liking this game, and after each significant update I tried playing again, but is just a rather unbalanced, slow moving affair. The main concepts seem really good on paper, and it looks like a viable alternative to Civ, but it doesn't work. Grievances don't really affect the game play too much. Mainly an early warning system if the AI wants to attack you or not. Got all the research in the world, but an inconvenient starting position, well good luck building any useful units. You have an army of 20 units but opponent with one or two units that are a little stronger means game over. Any play style other then going for total domination early on, just means you'll miss some essential resources. and will get destroyed

I played this a lot on release and it was pretty good then with some flaws that weren't big enough for me to remember to this day. One thing that does stand out is the enemy AI being very incompetent and very easy. Highest difficulty is challenging however, but only for a few playthroughs. The game itself however is I think brilliant, and it feels like it's better in 2025 than it was on release. I don't seem to get annoyed by anything, which means they likely fixed some bugs or details that were just irritating on release. I love all the cultures that are represented, and I love the decision making between choosing them. Even if you know what you're going for, it's not immediately obvious which culture you should choose. And choosing different cultures CAN change how you play that particular era. Diplomatic system is pretty good, but as I said before, the enemy AI will not demonstrate it very well. The game doesn't spam you with popups, and it's easy to ignore them. District building feels much more natural than in other games, but you also don't need to engage with it, if you don't like it. The game has a surprisngly high amount of valid yet completely different playstyles. My favourite part of clever game design that Humankind introduced is the Neolithic Era. In other strategy games, you're strongly pressured to settle down immediately (lest you fall behind), largely meaning that your start is a matter of luck. Here, the Neolithic Era is represented in the first few turns of the game, where you roam and explore the land, hunting animals, growing your pops or discovering points of interest. This means you can go have a look around the map before you decide where you want to settle down, making the early game much more exciting and much more strategic. For those familiar with Sid Meier's Civ games, I think Humankind outclasess Civ VII easily, and is a good alternative to even more solid entries like Civ V or Civ VI.

good game with its unique game play unlike some companies that copy said idea.

Majority of the game is ok, on par with Civ 6, but the railroading into dead end policies at game end is dumb. You can create a massive theocracy but all of a sudden all your citizens become atheists and you are forced into non-theism. Same for the other choices you can make for the other policies. Feels like whoever created this section of the game definitely had an agenda and it kills the end game play.

Actually decently fun, but the culture system could use a rework. Instead of being forced to change cultures to stay on top of the ball game, I wish that culture clothing and units would be updated with each era that you choose so you can stay as the same culture without accepting those disadvantages.

The tutorial for this really sucks. Frankly better to get Civ as this is very similar while that explains how everything works. Unless you are prepared to spend hours watching videos this game is too obtuse to be playable.

The game is amazing, but imo, the developers should adjust the visuals as it's currently too bright and high-contrast. I think Civ 5 had a perfect visual balance. Also, it might be a good idea to limit the available culture choices during each selection phase based on your current culture. That would make the progression feel more natural and coherent.

Still playing this game. So, if you are even considering buying this game (on sale perhaps), do it! I'm playing this rather than CIV7 which is a failure in this state. Pros: - Changing your culture every era feels great, there are many synergies and it keeps you interested as the game evolves in a different way every play trough. - The battle system is something I like, even though there are some exploits it just feels good overall. - I love the different challenges you have to go trough to unlock your stars to go to the next era, it keeps you focused on different things. - The influence / faith system feels good with many ways to boost it. - It feels like a complete game, and defeating all the others feels rewarding on higher difficulties. Cons: - I'm reading some players that feel that the AI could be better, I agree, some games feel very challenging in a good way, while others feel broken (for you or for the AI). - I never liked the Fame system, it feels broken and thus I always play conquer all to win the game mode. - The Congress of Humankind DLC isn't worth it, it's simply not good, can be exploited, AI uses it in the most dumb way imaginable.

Working to spice the base game of civilization up with fun twists and at times, better content. You will love if you enjoy civilization... I have found myself playing this more often myself

Really fun game with lots of unique features separating it from any other civ type game, however, there are way too many bugs, and very few actually good mods to counter these issues. The game is barely playable without encountering bugs that could destroy your run. In my opinion, maybe wait for a sale, unless you love to be manhandled by some unsolved bugs.

I guesssss I recommend this. It's a very beautiful game, and I haven't experienced any bugs. But it's also unbelievably similar to Civilization 6, I don't see why anyone would play both, they are pretty much the same game. I've got a ton of experience with these games and despite only playing half a dozen hours, I'm pretty bored. The AI seems very dumb, and I'm not really doing anything. I'm barely making any decisions, there is no meaningful spontaneous conflict or anything, I queue up 5 buildings in each city and then click end turn for 30 turns in a row.

A true Civ competitor! Very enjoyable for the most part with some unique gameplay elements. Change your civilisation every era to increase your economy, strengthen your military, grow more food etc. Found it easier to get into over Civ. Recommended

This game is honestly great, I got introduced to this genre of games via Civilization 6. I first played this game when it came out on Stadia, once I got a gaming PC I definitely had to purchase it again. There are a few things that I think would make this game superb but overall I like the very fine details. I'm still putting several ours of game play in. I personally love this game.

I think that conceptually it's a really cool idea and that it has potential to be a REALLY fun Civ competitor. However, every time I've tried playing the game, I am just... unsatisfied with it. I do like how founding cities work and the core gameplay loop, as well as the more in-depth way to progress your culture, science, and the how wars work. However, it just feels off on the AI side of things and there's some balancing areas that need work to make the game feel a bit smoother and better.

I preordered it back in the days. Played it for 40ish hours. It felt like days or weeks. The movement is so slow. Now, a couple of years later...beside new content, the same problems remain. Movement on the map is slow (the animation, not the distance). And it still feels like playing for months just to finish a fast game!

I found this to be very blah. I found the minute changes tedious. I felt little connection to the citizens or the cities. Its ok for a long boring game to play with while you watch videos or something else. I hoped it would get better but it didnt. Far too much focus in the NPC opponents and not enough in achievements. Plus, the original trailers implied you were going to be able to race towards certain technologies like "rock-n-roll" - great idea but not what the games uses. I haven't wrote a review for this game because it has been on the chopping block where I finally remove it from my favorites list. I only do that when I am planning on never playing it again.
