There are 3 things that I want to mention. One is movement. If you want to conquer this game you need to understand where to move. So many times I've had my unit piling up in front of small opening while the enemy mages and archers shower them with death. Don't let this happen to you. Second is recruitment/story route progress. This game has a lot of branches and choices that can affect the route you're in, which characters you can recruit, and which ending you get. I went in blind and of course I get the "bad" ending. If you care about it, check out guides. Third, the RNG. It's very frustrating when you're being screwed by it. So just get ready for it. Other than that, it's a very addicting SRPG. I don't think I'd call it amazing, but it's pretty good.

Yes, but ONLY IF some things are fixed. If you don't like what you see below, don't buy this game. Watch a story video on YouTube and save your money. 1. The Steam / PC version has massive random cutouts of the Xbox controller. For no reason, at any time, it will stop taking your input. This game must put the controller as the HIGHEST PRIORITY, as a mistake in input could cost you one of your soldier's lives, and lose the game for you. 2. A confirmation dialog MUST come up before you can attack your own soldiers. See #1. The only time you should be attacking your soldiers is when they're charmed and you have no cleric to cast Ease on them. 3. Ease should cure ALL OF THE NEGATIVE CONDITIONS AT ONCE. It currently ONLY cures one condition, it doesn't ask you which one, and it usually chooses the least lethal condition to cure (like weakness to lightning, over the condition that causes stumbling [attacks automatically miss] or charm). 4. The party can carry 1000 of each item, but each character can only carry >> 4 << in combat. This makes the time between combats an inventory nightmare. 5. Likewise, you can only carry 4 spells. And 4 skills. 6. Even as far as Chapter 3, you cannot buy MP refill items, nor craft MP refill items unless you find Magic Leaf items on the battlefield. This makes conserving MP refill items mandatory for boss battles. Again, not fun. I like Final Fantasy Tactics. Story-wise, this game follows the story arc of FFT almost beat for beat, and I like that. But it seems that Square took the *** worst *** parts of FFT, and added more bad things, and came up with this game. FFT was smooth, and inventory management was virtually non-existent - you bought everything you need in the party inventory, you equip your people, and in combat, inventory is shared. This game is radically different. As I said above, you only get 4 inventory slots per character, and you can have 100 characters (but only 12 per battle at most). A shared inventory would have done away with that mess and made the game fun. You can only select between 10 human characters when hiring a new characters - if you want non-humans, you have to convince them to join you, which generally has a base 30% chance of success, even if you drop them to near 0 HP (don't use pincer attack anywhere near a character you're trying to convince - you'll kill them every time...and you don't know just how hard it is to convince a rare flying cleric). Worse, when you hire a character, you have to change their class immediately to get the class that's not one of the original 10 (Witch / Warlock, Dragoon, etc). It's not intuitive, and it's not fun. There are no quality of life improvements, such as going into the shop and have the shopkeeper equip your new character with the best gear possible, based on the class and weapon skill you chose (there are a lot of them, and even in chapter 3, you haven't unlocked all of them, like spellbooks for Witches, which makes no sense at all). Then there's the maximum level cap...FFS, this concept is good for developers, but the worst thing for players. Especially when the gameplay is not balanced properly even after you hit the level cap with all your characters. In order to get out of Chapter One, you need to max all of your characters to the current level cap, and then try not to die while taking out the leader in a really hard battle, who takes little damage from your underpowered characters. If you really, REALLY want to play a FFT clone, play Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. It's fairly well-balanced, and doesn't have too many bugs. It scratches the FFT itch very well. If you MUST play this game, get on GameFAQs and read the FAQ as you play. This game is merciless if you don't pay attention, or if you choose the wrong skills, go in without enough items, or the input cuts out, you end up killing one of your character by using a weapon skill instead of a healing item, and your whole mission implodes because you're down a fighter you absolutely needed to win. Also, before starting a battle, SCOUT THE BATTLE, so you know what to expect. Fighting 4 beasts without a dragoon with the beast killer skills (2 of them, one for you and one for everyone around you) is asking for death, no matter how good your fighters are - remember the level cap. There is a crafting glitch that allows you to make infinite money in Chapter 3 crafting blowguns. But honestly, even after you've crafted everything you need, the other problems keep kicking you in the head. After some battles in Chapter 3, a new section of the random battle POI opens up...but the last section of it sees you fighting your 12 characters against *** 18 enemies ***. Even with my best lineup, I almost lost because they have charmers on their side, and the Ease problem forces you to attack your own characters to get rid of the charm effect, which is fewer hits on your opponents. It's a headache. I'll probably finish the game, because I want to see how it ends. I doubt if I'll ever play it again afterwards, not without fundamental changes like I listed above. As always, YMMV, but if you buy it, it's on you. Don't say you weren't warned.

I think the main ups and downs of this game has been shared in other reviews. As someone who has played the original and the PSP versions way too much, I would still recommend this version. I feel that even though the game tends to share some RNG frustration (but also some nice lucky streaks), it does force you to use some strategies that you may not have attempted in the original versions. You also get the option to rewind during battle if you want to attempt to manipulate the RNG. Archers are finally no longer top tier units and I honestly feel the vast majority of classes have a role to play depending on your style - even if some are outclassed by the more unique units later on. This is still an old game at base as one of the earlier strategy RPGs - it basically set the foundations for Final Fantasy Tactics. There are some nice QoL changes along with some questionable changes, but I still think this is the definitive version of the game. Older players shouldn't go in expecting to use the same old strategies as before while new players should enjoy this game as it's been updated enough to fit in with a lot of the retro games coming out while still keeping the feel of playing an actual older game.

Let me preface this review by saying that Tactis Ogre is one of the grandfathers of modern-day tactical RPGs and if you are playing Reborn to see the early days of the genre, you should definitely buy it. However, if you are looking for a game that feels and plays like a modern tactical RPG you will not find that here. TO:R is not a remake, its a remaster. This means that the majority of the gameplay is very similar to the original release. There are definitely a handful of quality of life changes of course, but by no means are you getting a game that will compete with modern-day tac RPGs. There are many mechanics that just feel unusued, the enemy AI is dismal, the original developers idea of a challenging fight is not one that demands a high level of strategy, but one in which the enemy you are fighting is so blatantly overpowered that it feels unbeatable (looking at you,
Dorgalua
), and, worst of all (in my opinion) is the inclusion of RNG in the gameplay. When I think of a strategy-based or tactile RPG, I think of a game in which your brainpower is the determining factor in your fights. However, the developers of Tactics Ogre thought it a good idea to make many of the passive abilities different classes can wield RNG-based. This means that on any given turn you are crossing your fingers and hoping that the abilities proc. While your passive abilities will not necessarily swing a battle in your favor, it still boggles my mind that a game that aims to be strategy-oriented includes gameplay mechanics that emphasize RNG. This removes your ability to control fights with your brainpower, which I feel to be completely contrary to what a tactical RPG should be. The story, however, is the shining part of the game. I found the characters compelling, the choices interesting, and the plotline gripping. It is what kept me going for the ~100 hours I put into the game (as well as my desire to see the history of the genre). TL;DR: If you are looking for a well-crafted tactical RPG experience that competes with modern options, you won't get that with Tactics Ogre: Reborn. However, if you are looking to explore the history of the tac RPG genre and compare [modernized] early representations of the concept to what we call a tac RPG today, I think it's worth trying.

Still one of the two greatest SRPGs ever created. it's a shame Matsuno and the Quest team never really produced anything after FFT.

going into this game expecting an inferior Final Fantasy tactics, however, i was surprised that its on par with it. It is more in depth mechanically compared to FFT, which i liked a lot. narrative wise, FFT is way better, but the game offers a plethora of narrative branching routes, turning it into an easily 200+ hrs game. post game content is no joke, its so damn difficult. easily one of the best RPGs ever. cant wait for FFT on steam.

Sometimes I fantasize about Canopus Wolph coming home drunk and beating me until I feel numb. He kicks me in the ribs until I can hardly breathe. Then he starts to cry and apologizes, begging me to forgive him. He holds me all night as I gently cry into his wings.

Watered down in difficulty from its original SFC release but still a solid turn base tactic game. Does have a great story and characters.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is the pinnacle of tactical RPGs—an absolute must-play for fans of strategy and storytelling. With deeply satisfying team-building mechanics, rich character creation options, and one of the most gripping, branching narratives in gaming history, it offers endless replayability and emotional depth. Every choice matters, every battle feels meaningful, and every character has a role to play. If you're looking for a masterclass in tactical gameplay and storytelling, It is worth every penny.

Great story and voice acting. However the level cap and random battle card made the combat very not fun. FFT is three times the game this is.

I like this game but I can't recommend it because it lacks two features which make it significantly more annoying to play than it would be otherwise. 1. A lack of saving during battles which becomes very relevant when fights drag on longer than 30 minutes. 2. I can't quit the game from my desktop without the game reopening and forcing me to quit from it. These two design choices make what should be a somewhat relaxed and thoughtful experience into a stressful one full of tension forcing all players to fear minor mistakes as it may cost you hours of your time.

Surprisingly Awesome – A Must-Play for Tactics Fans I usually can’t stand most things Square Enix puts out—their stories, characters, art style, all of it—but Tactics Ogre: Reborn completely blew me away. If you’re even slightly curious about classic tactical RPGs, this is a must-play. The story is genuinely great, the characters are solid, and the combat/progression systems are incredibly well done. What really impressed me is how you can choose how hands-on you want to be—assigning AI to units or micromanaging every move. It makes the game super flexible and fun no matter how you like to play. The production value is also top-notch. Totally worth the price. Easily my personal GOTY.

How people are happy paying full price for the same game in the 90s is beyond me....Seems like a complete money grab. If Square Enix wants to charge full price then do a proper remaster. I expected a lot more but got a lot, lot less.

It's not good. The controls are very poorly designed to the point where you get frustrated just doing simple movements around the map and the classes are pretty boring to play.

Clearly I've been spoiled by the more modern tactical turn-based games with their build flexibility and quality-of-life features, not to mention the pacing for a modern (busy) gamer. This feels sluggish and tedious as all hell. I hear the original didn't have the staggered level capping this remake has... Makes sense. It's somehow impressive to make the character level progress simultaneously feel restrictive and tedious. I also hear the weird card mechanic that feels inconsequential was also an "addition" to the Reborn... Makes sense. Almost like the original could have been better? Some people praise the story, but at least so far (15+ hours) the exposition is nothing but painfully generic "kingdoms at war and kids save the day" and tedious to slog through. My enthusiasm for Tactics Ogre: Reborn plummets with every passing battle. I'll give this one more long night to convince me it's worth playing.

Meh, level scaling sucks. Would be better if you could just up the challenge via difficulty WITHOUT level scaling but.... Decent game to get when on sale only. Not enough customization on characters to blend their talents for better tactics as your upper limit for chumps in a fight is 12, which is a lot, but you're going to have to regulate 3-4 of your goys as healers leaving you with less damage potential. Automated battles are great..... When the AI isn't retarded and, unfortunately, that's what you get sometimes. I've watched my healers just move around INSTEAD of healing when someone needed it. For a giggle, I waited to see how long it would take for them to heal and lost team members in the process. "You have the movement, mana, and the spell all you need to do is move one block closer and cast the spell", is what I say to them, but I guess they can't hear me through the screen. Perhaps a shady ninja will work better..... Remember kids "just say no to level scaling". Story might be alright, but I tuned out after I realized they implemented level scaling. Won't finish it.

If you rented and never returned the 1995 version of this, played it on a toaster television in your buddies apartment on your PS1 and have never forgotten how awesome it was.. then yea, this is that but upgraded and on computer. It is very well done. Nostalgic, when games were FINISHED and had depth. A better time.

This game could be good, but at least in the first 10 hours i've played. Most combats are the same, the UI is finicky, a lot of the systems within the game just aren't properly explained and confusing (Damage types, Debuff/buffs, Armour, Stats, Skills). Most combats just feel the same, and most classes feel ridiculously similar so far. Would not recommend.

As a veteran of FFT, FFTA and FFTAA2 I was really hyped to discover Tactics Ogre.I had heard about it many years ago but I was like "wtf, do we play as ogres or something?" Lol and I didnt know it was the progenitor to FFT. FFT and FFTA affected me greatly as a child/teen (A2 was pretty bad compared to the other 2 but ok) Ive beat FFT a few times and FFTA 4 or 5 times. Going into Ogre, immediately I hated the voice acting. Most of it was cringe and I was about to turn it off, before I started to notice the horrid high pitched sound effects for every action that I feel like have no place, other than to sound anime. The worst offender to me that made me instant uninstall would be the fact that THERE ARE NO CORPSES. Just a loot bag right away? Are you serious? Lame. Also people had mentioned that cards werent in the OG game and are very unimmersive. Which I would have to agree with after watching some gameplay. I understand this is an old game, but FFT was like what, 2 years later? And that game is a masterpiece. Im not sure if these are just the remake changes to be more PG and anime or what, but I would steer clear of this and play FFT, FFTA and if you can stomach it FFTAA2. I wasnt going to pre-order the FFT remaster but I might now just because ive been itching for Tactics Ogre to go on sale. Now ive got blue nuggets for some tactical rpg action.
