Despite trying for hours on end to beat Mickey Mania with a friend, a long time ago, we never made it past the third level. Spotting this game on sale, it brought back many good memories and I thought that maybe, this was a Mickey game I could finally beat !
Impressive remake of the eponymous game from 1990, Castle of Illusions sends Mickey across 5 diverse and colorful worlds, to gather the seven Chaos Emeralds that Sonic apparently misplaced again. Those will help him create the "Rainbow Road" from Mario Kart, that he will use to reach the tower, where the level "Stormy Ascent" from Crash Bandicoot is waiting for him. Once at the top, he will fight a very chatty Maleficent and try to save his one true love, Minnie. Phew...
Quite the adventure for our little mouse, and yet, you'll see the end in about 2 hours. That's very short, mostly because the 10 levels and 6 bosses are fun and inspired but not particularly difficult, so you'll have to go after the hidden diamonds and collectibles to extend your playtime to 4 hours.
Most of them are shoved in your face as you go through the levels, but you'll need a keen eye to locate the others, hidden out of sight or at the end of trickier platforming sequences. Nothing too hard, and fun to look for.
If you don't mind its obvious shortcomings, Mickey and his Castle of Illusions is a pleasant retro adventure that I happily went on.
I may even be a little too enthusiastic, but I want to give it a 7, since it allowed me to take my revenge on Mickey Mania. It's not the same game but it counts, right ? Right ?
