Other than Quake, Dusk is probably the best boomer shooter you can buy. Yes games like ULTRAKILL exist but Dusk is a tried and true boomer shooter. No dashing, no sliding, no crazy movement mechanics. Just bunny hopping, and a crap ton of weapons. The gameplay is simple but the levels are amazing. Episode 1 and 2 are your generic linear corridors or open environments, but episode 3 and 4 take it to the next level. Dusk is 100% worth your money if you're looking for more dark and gothic games like Quake.

This game makes me feel now, the way Doom made me feel as a kid. This game constantly gives you the finger and then gives you the power to give the finger right back. fast and kinetic, tons of secrets, punchy weapons , pop culture references, freaky ass enemies ( with freaky ass sound design no less) and ominous levels designed to be just stressful enough to put you in the zone.

It plays like quake but its story is new and is fun to figure out when going in blind. but can also be confusing and creepy. especially for the first play through.

A lovingly-made Lovecraftian boomer shooter with sleazy (in a good way,) grindhouse sensibilities. Full of character and has a unique horror atmosphere.

Extremely enjoyable game in the style of the old shooters like Quake, Duke, Heretic and of course Blood. Had a blast playing this. For me it's so much more engaging than the heavily scripted, mostly linear mega productions of this time. Get this game, even if you're young :-).

Awesome game with cool mechanics and secrets, a great throwback to retro shooters of the 90s, maybe very early 00s. Also mostly to Quake.

Probably THE game that started the 'boomer shooter revival' (no it wasn't Doom16). Excellent atmosphere, levels, exploration. 1/3 Blood, 1/3 Quake, 1/3 Original stuff. Great game.

Yeah, this is really good. Awesome movement, great weapons, and a phenomenally varied soundtrack meant I fully enjoyed my time with DUSK. I bought this after hearing it compared to DOOM Eternal – a game I believe will never be topped in terms of movement and weaponry – and I can definitely see the similarities. On higher difficulties, you need to move constantly, with bunnyhopping being practically essential for survival. Bind jump to the scroll wheel and you’ll be flying through levels in no time. It nails that 90s shooter vibe, but with all the modern quality of life improvements. It just feels great – everything is so smooth. For my playthrough, I played on the second hardest difficulty and found it reasonably easy. I would have gone for the hardest, and honestly, it feels like that's how the game is meant to be experienced, but my usual shooter sensitivity was just too low for this one. That’s not a flaw in the game, just a warning – you’ll want to crank up your sensitivity. You're constantly running in circles and shooting in opposite directions, so quick aiming is crucial. While the weapons are all solid, it does feel like it's missing a true BFG-equivalent – something absurdly powerful that wipes everything out. Well, actually, the rivet gun kind of fits that role. It might be one of the most broken weapons I’ve ever used: massive damage output and a huge ammo pool. It’s fantastic. Level design is generally excellent, but a few levels really didn’t work for me. I wasn’t a fan of the gravity shifting effects, and some stages make it a bit too easy to fall off the map and get instantly killed. While the levels are mostly intuitive, I would’ve appreciated a 2D map of discovered areas – it’s easy to forget where that locked door was, and backtracking is common. I’m nitpicking, though. DUSK is a fantastic game with some of the best movement I’ve ever experienced in a shooter. I strongly recommend it. 9/10

Among my favorite boomershooter. It has both taken influence from older games as well as influenced many other boomer shooters I've played - I believe this was one of the first in its genre. Great music and atmosphere once again. Fast paced game, thus mouse + keyboard is preferred.

This game is amazing, an fun ride all the way through. I don't usually review games, but i need to for this one its so much fun. Throughout the entire game they always found a way to freshen up the gameplay. Between the combat and hunting for secrets it never ceased to be dull. If I'm being honest the two low points in the game atleast in my opinion was Episode 2 and the Final Boss. But despite those parts of the game its absoulutely perfect. Buy this game, whether on sale or not.

Clearly a lot of passion has gone into the making of this game. It plays well and has challenging mechanics. The game is also heavily customizable, so users can modify their game accordingly. This is a great homage to the boomer-shooter games of the 90's like Quake, Blood, and Doom, while maintaining its own uniqueness. I would highly recommend this game for people who have a liking for these types of games.

Any goodwill this game builds up throughout your average playthrough is completely and totally ruined by the ending. Instead of defeating the cult and going on to do... Dusk guy things, you instead fight Nyarlathotep, lose, and get given his power and turned into a thrall of his. Then you're sealed away until he needs you to do some unspeakably evil stuff way down the line. The ONLY good thing about this is that Nyarlathotep is played by Stephan Weyte. That's it. I would have never bought this if I knew it was just going to waste my time. It's a shame, because this game is pretty good up until the ending. But that ending just makes everything leading up to it worthless. Completely ruins it, and retroactively makes it a waste of time. Bottom line is, there's plenty of good boomer shooters on Steam. Go play one of those other ones.

I played 2 chapters when game wasnt fully released, it was serviceable but nothing to write home about. I was replaying full game HD version lately, and I noticed that game is not very good to be honest, the best part is atmosphere, which is eerie, horror and psychodelic at times. So plus for that, but beside that its pretty mediocre, especially level design is very questionable. Levels are either very simple, or very convoluted despite relatively small size. "Hatch has opened"- yea, but where? Levels are not that big and yet require a lot of backtracking, and very often player doesnt know where to go next. It ruins game flow completely. Enemies are boring to fight and/or annoying, bosses are underwhelming. The best thing this game did was influence other developers to produce more boomer shooters. For that I am grateful, because its one of my favourite genre of games, and I would recommend to play some of these games for every player who likes action games and shooters. Cultic, Prodeus or Amid evil- everyone should try them. Dusk unfortunately I would not recommend.

Does Dusk even need another review at this point? After all, this is the game that has if not started the boomer shooter resurgence of the last 7-ish years, at least gave it a massive boost. I think that what makes Dusk so great is that the developer really nailed giving this game a unique soul and personality, while not making the game come across as trying too hard to differentiate itself from the classic 90's FPS's it took inspiration from. In fact, one of the charms of Dusk for me is that it is comfortable being EXACTLY like the classics in areas that made those original games so timeless: game mechanics are as simple as could be--just run and gun; weapons are straightforward with no alt-fire modes, no mods or upgrades that would risk making them confusing. Dusk's inspirations are also obvious in its level design--you will recognize areas inspired by Quake, Quake 2, Half-Life and even Doom 3. The little additions to the gameplay, such as being able to do backflips while in the air, are genuinely fun and don't feel like an empty gimmick. BTW, did I mention that Dusk also has a killer soundtrack? I also like the fact that the game gives you a wide array of video modes/filters to choose from. You can play Dusk HD for a more modern experience, or you can tweak the settings to make the game look like something straight out of the early 90's. Whatever your preferences are, there will be an option for you. By playing a good amount of FPS games over the years--particularly boomer shooters--I've come to realize that the main hallmark of a truly great game is that I will be coming back to it again and again every now and then, no matter how many times I've completed it. Dusk is one of such rare games.

A great game and an excellent intro into the boomer-shooter genre (for me at least). It is HIGHLY polished, I very very rarely had any moments of glitches at all. The movement is creamy smooth and the combat is exhilarating. The visuals are great especially with the Dusk HD free DLC. There is horror elements like gore and body horror so keep this in mind if you are squeamish, but otherwise it is very fun. 10/10.

Come on down to Pennsylvania and shoot multiple Grand Wizards while listening to the voices in your head today! Seriously though, Dusk is a super fun boomer shooter that's not afraid to turn on the horror vibes every so often. Also features a great soundtrack and enough ammo being thrown at you in later levels to make a bullet hell not proud but slightly happy.
