Heroes of Hammerwatch

Its a great game if you have patience. A lot of patience. Like an absurd amount of patience. The game simply doesn't respect your time, which is super unfortunate as I really do like the game. I just cant recommend something that cares so little for your time.

Ok, co-op is working great and it is funny to play with friend.

I would wait for a sale, as I feel 10 dollars is not worth the tedium in this game. That being said, I enjoyed it for what it is, a petty grindy roguelite. It does get quite samey and grindy, and frankly I'd recommend modding the game if you play solo. The progression is hampered by the taxes, how expensive the later upgrades are, and the very slow exp gain, which all have a fix with mods. But the classes feel fun, abilities are cool and well animated, the combo system is satisfying, and watching your power increase is a satisfying enough loop. Haven't had the chance to play with friends yet, but I imagine that's where it shines best.

This game does an amazing job of fighting against you having a good time. I'm 7 hours in and just uninstalled. It's horrifically tedious.

Super Fun and great game to play off and on

I love this game, it is a rogue-like with a decent amount of replay-ability and a TON of possible builds you could play with.

tl;dr - Very survivor-like gameplay. Not a typical roguelite, heavily relies on meta progression. Clearing on fresh save doesn't feel realistic. Meta progression IS the progression and there's a metric f*ckton of it. More of a grinding game than anything if you're into that. It DOES feel like artificial gameplay time a lot but I don't hate it. It's for you to know if that's what you're looking for or not. I haven't played a whole lot yet. It's very clear from the start that you're not meant to clear on your first run which can be a bad thing for a lof of roguelite enjoyers, me included. That being said, I don't mind a grindy game every now and then. There's a LOT of unlocks to get, maybe too much for most people considering how quick the gameplay can becomes stale. Gameplaywise it's very "survivor-like" hack'n'slash with increasing groups of enemies as you progress further in. Game doesn't feel THAT hard to master, it's just hard because you need to upgrade your stuff first. Once you get a couple upgrades in, it feels more realistic to advance. Overall I'm enjoying the slow and chill grind but I wish the actual gameplay had a bit more than what HoH has to offer. I don'T play super long sessions because I get bored but occasionally, I feel compelled to come back for a few runs to progress my unlocks. With all that being said, it's up to you to decide if that's the game for you or not.

Big step up from the original Hammerwatch but its also super grindy and boring, especially early game when you have nothing except primary attack and maybe one spell. Co op kinda saves it but solo its pretty bad. + DLCs can be played through even if only the host owns them. This is a great way to add them. + The RPG system is well made. Classes are varied and there is a lot of depth - items, spells, upgrades, classes, synergies, etc. Its a lot of fun. + Gameplay is pretty smooth and it feels great mowing down dozens of enemies at once. + Co op works well and its the main draw of the game. - Its incredibly grindy to level your character and purchase upgrades. Its less frustrating and annoying later on, early game is terrible and i wouldnt mind most people - Lot of the graphics are reused from the first game. - There isnt a lof of guidance for the player. - No story and characters. Bosses arent interesting at all. This game is a tossup, if you dont mind the grind go ahead, otherwise stay away or at least try in co op to lessen the load.

Do you like adventure? Do you like killing hordes of monsters? Do you like leveling up your character? Well, this is the game for you. Worth every cent. And if you are torn between this one and the sequel, get both. They have a slight bit of difference in their styles and mechanics that its just worth it.
