|| Timeless and Terrifying ||
Even as a fan of the game, it is still hard to believe that Resident Evil (Gamecube) is even a game that came out 20+ years ago. I am not just saying that because of its stellar art direction and oppressive atmosphere that can still put a lot of modern horror games to shame, but also because of how it's gameplay ,even at its simplest, can so effortlessly engage players. From the inventory management, puzzle solving, planning out what routes to take within the mansion when you are about to leave a save room, and so much more. And even if the stories on offer aren't anything that'll wow anyone in particular, the early 2000s B-movie charm and inherent cheesiness surprisingly compliments the main gameplay really well.
Pro tip: Start with Jill
When starting the game you are given a choice to pick between two of the game's main playable characters: Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. The first time this menu shows up, Chris will be be the character that the game defaults to. While Chris does have certain benefits over Jill such as more health and always having a lighter at all times, his smaller inventory size compared to Jill's just makes him less desirable for a lot of players especially if its on a first play through where you would spend most of your time learning the quirks of game.
Getting into the gameplay flow proper, it mainly consists of exploring the environments, finding items that act as resources help you progress by using them in other rooms on the map, solving puzzles, avoiding and/or killing zombies along the way, rinse and repeat until you reach credits. Like I said in the beginning, a lot of these gameplay elements are simple but its how they interact and effect the other gameplay aspects that manages to create a tight and engaging gameplay throughout.
For example, if you want to kill or stagger zombies you will have to shoot them with bullets which will then leave you with less resources to defend yourself. But if you do kill the zombies and you don't burn their bodies with fuel, which is also a limited resource, after a certain amount of time they will come back as Crimson Heads which are much faster and hit harder. So you are left with a choice of killing zombies and having the right amount of fuel to burn their remains or avoid the zombies while you keep exploring which doesn't expend any resources but it will mean that you'd have to constantly maneuver around them when entering their specified rooms. There are a several more of these types of decision making moments with the other gameplay elements that help keep you keep guessing the best way to approach the game.
Terrifying, yet gorgeous
What Capcom managed to do here with Resident Evil's art direction and visual design is something that is still worthy of praise even up to this day. It was achieved by continuing the RE staple pre rendered backgrounds and static camera angles which then let's the developers use the extra horsepower on rendering characters and enemies. Add to the fact that although being pre rendered the backgrounds are filled to the brim with so many details and smart color choices that they are often mistaken for actual rendered environments.
Besides just making the game look great, these elements are also a major factor of the game's tense atmosphere. The fixed camera angles can add to the feel of danger when entering a brand new room for the first time since the lack of control would mean that enemies can be obscured by design. And the environment designs and layout were made with this limitation in mind where you can have big, open, and grand spaces to run around in or even smaller, cramped rooms with damp and moodier tones usually with a single enemy or two just around the corner punishing players that aren't cautious enough.
"Wanna see STARS? I'll sho-" eh wait wrong game
It really can't be said enough of just how great this generation of games was and Resident Evil is easily one of its hallmarks. Tight gameplay, brilliant map design, dark and palpable atmosphere, and a consistently engaging experience makes for some really fun yet scary times especially if you intend to play the game again and again for those faster clear times and bonuses.

Surprisingly enjoyable.
I was expecting a game that would show its age and have a lot of jank. But instead I got an enjoyable puzzle game with tension, creative puzzles, a decent amount of variety, and some comedically bad and good writing. Some parts can be quite annoying, but it does make dying actually scary, so it's acceptable. The door animations are a nice pause between the tension. They do get old quick, though, and will make backtracking less fun. They also are a bit too long for my liking.
Would recommend.

Resident Evil is a pretty solid game, I can definitely see why it became such a classic. It genuinely terrified me; during the first hour, I found myself screaming at every zombie I came across. The tank controls, surprisingly, aren’t even that bad. With the fixed camera angles, they actually work well and give the game a unique feel.
That said, I did struggle a lot with figuring out where to go. I was just too dumb to figure things out on my own and had to look up what to do multiple times. On my second playthrough, though, the experience was way better because I already knew what to do and where to go.
I don’t really blame the game, older games were just designed like that. My monkey brain just isn’t built for that kind of trial and error. But all in all, if you use a guide, you're probably going to enjoy it a lot.
Review
The remake of the original. The legend. What people miss and long for but we will probably never get again.
Gameplay
Comparing to the original the remake is probably even more hard. Although if you finish the game once it’s not a really difficult game aside the first section of the game. There are two new features that I think cancel themself out in greatness. You now have defensive weapons that protects you against one zombie grab.
Chris being a worse character has the best one, a flashbang that one shots enemy when they grab you. Additionally, his lighter is now useful. You can get a can of kerosine, and it has two charges to burn zombies. Zombies that did not die from headshots have a chance to get up again and revive as a very fast crimson head zombie. In theory this feature looks nice, but just gives you more backtracking and walking. Some rooms you think you will never come back to? No need. Frequent hallways with still looked doors? Burn those zombies, run back to the chest and put that lighter/kerosine away. Just adds unnecessary walking, would have been fixed if it’s not an item that takes up inventory space.
Generally, the gameplay otherwise is still the same. Dodge or kill zombies, try to save ammo and health, pickup items and try to use them in the correct way to unlock a new path. It’s a puzzle game that is never testing your sanity with obscure puzzles and rather gives you good a good dopamine rush when you find out how to use that gem or emblem you found.
You can switch between tank controls and modern ones, but there is a reason why you should use tank controls due to the fixed camera angles.
Story
The story is less B horror movie jank, although characters still talk like they are in one making it less offensive but also less memorable. There is new story sections included that just feel on point and completely fitting to the game. Overall, an improvement, depending on your opinion on the trash factor.
Sound
It would have been awesome to choose between original ost and new one, although no matter its still atmospheric and the shotgun sounds punchy. Some tracks are just fantastic like the underground lab. Enemies still sound like they are skeletons or walking while dripping wet.
Graphics
This is where im divided. The drab and bleak look is pulled off fantastically. Especially outside at night times or in small rooms. I just feel like that the colours of the original had more charm to it. Games like dino crisis had a perfect mix between dark areas and colourful but deadly looking rooms.
Conclusion/TL;DR
The remake adds new content without changing too much. Puzzles are also slightly different but the game is still in spirit the same. It’s the perfect example of a remake that is more accessible to new players but also new (and same) enough for people who enjoyed the original. Highly recommended.

This game has aged incredibly well with modern controls and with great gameplay loop of having to plan out your inventory and using those resources efficiently, on top it off most eerie ost ever. Fantastic starting for me as this was my time playing RE game properly.

My assumption before playing this game was that its reputation had likely clouded its quality over the years. I was very happy to be proven wrong. This is a fantastic game that captures some of the best survival horror has to offer.
For its time the visuals are impressive, and Spencer mansion is my new favourite horror setting. The music and sound design really helps maintain an eerie atmosphere.
The fixed camera took some adjusting, but added an element of horror I had not experienced before. Not being able to freely check around corners made me rely on sound and added to the experience.
The number of puzzles surprised me, and how they often posed a challenge compared to modern games (even within the same franchise). I do wish there was an easier way in game to remind myself of certain objective locations.
Zombies have never been scarier than in this game. They are slow of course but never seem to die, and when they do you might get an even more dangerous enemy. Most of the bosses are puzzle related which I think allowed them to age better than other games.
Inventory management is possibly the most difficult part. The first half is so limited in storage locations that it can feel tedious alternating back and forth constantly while exploring. This can turn to frustration combined with animations when entering any door.
The combat has not aged well for me, but its thankfully not the focus. It's about managing your resources and choosing when to fight, kite, or run away.
You often get thrown surprising encounters or new enemies after completing major objectives, which stops things from getting boring whilst backtracking.
If you love survival horror then this is more than worth playing over 20 years later.

After playing through the game for the first time completely blind using Chris on Easy mode, I can say that the game is very good if you don't mind looking things up every once in a while.
The game stayed pretty scary throughout most of the game despite being made for older hardware, and I found myself jumping every time a zombie showed up around the corner when I wasn't expecting them.
The camera is fixed, which means it does feel very dated, and makes the game as a whole feel pretty clunky and hard to navigate, but it didn't really get in the way of my enjoyment of the game too often. I did find myself wishing for a usable camera by the end of the game though.
Even though I'm not the biggest fan of limited saves in a game, I feel like there were enough ink ribbons for a casual player to get through the game without losing too much progress whenever they die. I even had about 10 ink ribbons left by the time I finished the game, so it was generous enough, which honestly goes for all of the consumables in the game. I had plenty of healing, and lots of ammo by the end of the game, so I never felt like I had ruined my save file if an enemy took more resources than felt required.
The puzzles were very confusing, and I did have to look up where to go next three or four times, but most of the time I could figure out where to go next myself. Usually it was just me missing some small detail or something, but there were a few puzzles that either didn't feel intuitive or it just wasn't made clear at all that I could interact with an object. So if you are either incredibly patient and don't mind checking everything around the entire map multiple times just to be safe, or just don't mind looking something up every once in a while, this will be a great game for you.
By now, you can get a much better experience from the more recent games in the series like Resident Evil 7, but this is still a fun game, and it's always nice to look back at the experiences that modern horror games are inspired by.

Wonderful game. Wish I'd gotten into this series way sooner. Lovely cast of characters that I'm absolutely smitten with. The setting and gameplay are delightful. Takes me back to the days of the ps2, which is without a doubt my favourite console.
The game is difficult: but in a way that I appreciate. It gives you no context, no clues, no nothing. You've got to use your brain to solve all puzzles and figure it all out yourself. I had a blast farming for all the achievements, which was no easy feat.
Definitely deserves all the praise it's gotten.

This game I think is by far the best resident evil game in the whole franchise, it feels more like a horror game, and it does require you to play smart and think, not just shoot everything that is there. I played this as a kid, not really understanding at all compared to now. As an adult, I can really appreciate the genius of this game.
I played to get all the achievements too, and I was not bored once while doing it.

Resident Evil 2 remake pulled me in enough to get me to buy the series. I immediately dove into this one after 2 playthroughs of RE2 remake and man am I glad I did. I was a bit apprehensive at first as it is fundamentally quite a different game but it is absolutely stellar. Dripping in atmosphere, tense moments, engaging gameplay, fun puzzles, an interesting map, and so much more. I wish I was told about resident evil earlier. Big recommend

Of the two first gen 6 installments in the series, this is the twin that paid attention in school while RE0 was the one that ate glue and jacked off in the bathroom.
Ostensibly carrying the strength of the game its remaking, I think like the other remakes later in the series this one wasn't much of an uphill battle since they didn't change a lot other than some QoL and the graphics. This one pretty handily captures the same feelings of grotesque peril the original does, and while graphically I personally prefer the raw, harsh gen 5 look most of the time, this is pretty fresh paint for something a generation newer. More importantly, it of course resolves the one major flaw the OG had: those god awful tank controls. Call em intentionally clumsy all you want, bad controls are bad controls and the only place I want to see that kind of fighting with the fixed cam is in hokey tributes, not official remakes. This one is solid all the way through and thoroughly, quintessentially resident evil, not losing any of the charm in adding some arguably needed polish to a cultural touchstone. As I went on and on about in my RE0 review, I think this one is better seen in reference to that one than the original 1996 game, since they came out the same year (2002, these HD remakes in like 14 and 16 I think) and have the same graphical fidelity and gameplay with an important change echoing other games in the series: a damned storage mechanic, making inventory management a small challenge instead of a total hassle. The story beats are all there, the tension is great, and unlike many of the other games in the series, I think there are some genuinely scary moments, especially since the schlockiness is toned down quite a bit here compared to several of the other games (including the original) - but not so much it takes itself *too* seriously. The iconic cast is of course the main source of brevity, and while the performances overall are nothing to write home about (some great some mid some terrible) they are a huge improvement over both the original (obv) and 0, and are more importantly a great balance of cheesy and sympathetic. The core gameplay loop is the same as the rest of the series and frankly I have no complaints about it. This is the touch up of the game that invented it, after all, and it feels particularly well done here, with a much stronger balance of puzzles, management and action than a lot of the later installments that pivot more headlong into action. Storywise it really is a good setup for the more profound horror 2 and 3 bring to the table, and while I think the majority would agree the series peaked with Code Veronica or 4, this is more than serviceable as a fresh face for the strong start the series as a whole had. I can't recommend it enough. Great for players trying to get into the series in the first place, regulars who have done themselves a disservice by not going back to the beginning and would rather have something a little cleaner than just emulating the OG, and even the masochists who run through all of the games now and again - I think this one is particularly good for speedrunning and challenge runs compared to the easier or more tedious later installments. I'd dare say it's more than enough content to justify the sticker price, too.

Classic survival horror at it's finest!
Considering this is a remaster of a remake (feels funny to write that) that originally came out on Gamecube, this game still looks, feels and plays really great in my opinion.
The option of either tank controls or modern controls helps make this classic more accessible to modern audiences (while keeping purists happy), and widescreen support is a huge plus over the original release.
The atmosphere, puzzles, scares and combat are all top notch and make for some very engaging gameplay. I guess if I had to think of any criticisms, inventory management can be a bit of a pain at times and the ink ribbon save system (limited saves) may be a bit of a culture shock to gamers accustomed strictly to modern games with constant auto-saving. But it's perhaps in line with game's nature of encouraging the player to manage limited resources effectively, and dare I say adds to the tension.
Overall, this is perhaps the best entry of the classic RE games that used fixed camera angles, and is a very solid PC port that can run on a potato, so it's an easy recommendation from me.

the tank controls grew on me even though it caused me to get flattened by a large boulder the size of a small boulder. i would also recommend a guide for when you get stuck and need to figure out that stone/metal object number 57 is actually a stone/metal buttplug if examined at a specific angle that when inserted into chris somehow unlocks door number 128.

A good Remake. But an OK game in my opinion. Game has ups and downs, Like when u complete something or solve a puzzle the game doesn't tell u where to go some people may like it that the game doesn't hold your hand and tell to do this but it feels directionless until u remember oh I unlocked maybe thats what the next mission is about, When you solve something it feels good looking at all the objects it gives you the curiosity of whats next. Its a good remake though. This is a hard game, Don't try the hiking difficulty if you're a beginner.

The most visually stunning game I've ever played. No amount of ray tracing or subsurface scattering will overcome the designed beauty of these backdrops. Every scene is like a painting. The game play takes a while to get used to, but after you're settled into the game, it's a feeling like no other. Solving puzzles, running around, and managing inventory has never been so fun; and there's zombies to shoot too! Highly recommend. I'd say this is the best video game remake of all time.

The spiritual sequel to an obscure NES game, that started its own franchise that's single-handedly keeping Capcom alive today, people call it a classic and timeless masterpiece. So naturally, it was shit. It's essentially a Metroidvania, but without any of the things that makes that genre fun. You very slowly backtrack all over the place all the time, whenever you grab a new thing to try out but unlike proper Metroidvanias, you never really get any upgrades from exploring; just stuff you need anyway. Sure you can get a shotgun.. which you replace with a better one almost right away. And you also get a magnum, which you never really have a chance to use against anything since yer just drowning in grenades and the handful of bosses all die within 3-4 shots
Unlike proper Metroidvanias, there's also little to no combat. An occasional harmless zombie once in a while that goes down within seconds and only respawn once, later on you get the occasional hunter to shotgun to the ground, but that's pretty much it; the biggest threats were the like two screens with dogs, and one (optional) screen with birds, everything else was trivial. People call the game a survival horror, but there's no horror, no tension, and you get so much ammo everywhere that you could kill literally everything in the game and still have dozens of grenades and magnum rounds laying useless in yer item box
Add to that "support" characters that appear out of nowhere, proceed to do absolutely fuck all and then disappear just as suddenly without a trace, and you get a "game" that's just 90% fluff; essentially a point n' click with tank controls and no real story. Dull gameplay, terrible design, cardboard characters (except Barry, he's chill), a "story" that boils down to "here, go explore", and it even crashes every few minutes

Easily one of my favorite RE games, when you play this back to back with the OG there's no question to me that this game is superior in every way. The first play through is REALLY hard if you don't know generally where stuff is or what you need where. I thought it was a fun challenge to figure out and repeat plays have me trying to optimize my inventory as I speedrun through the game. BIG recommend from me.

Yo, the Resident Evil remake from 2002 is legit awesome! It takes the OG game and cranks it up with killer visuals—those pre-rendered backgrounds are creepy as hell and make the mansion feel alive. The gameplay’s tight, with puzzles that make you think and ammo so scarce you’re sweating every shot. Those Crimson Head zombies? Terrifying surprise, dude. Plus, the defensive weapons add some clutch moments. The story’s got that cheesy charm, but Jill and Chris still feel badass. It’s like the perfect mix of old-school vibes and fresh polish.

I am DNF'ing this game. I was excited to player REmake because I wanted to play one of the (relatively) old school versions of the Resident Evil games since I am a big fan of the remakes for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4. I do like how you have to keep track of where things are on the map and plan out route strategies to avoid damage and using ammo.
That being said, this game frustrates me to no end. I started out by playing on Expert, because of my familiarity with Resident Evil 2 Remake's expert difficulty. This may have been a mistake, but most of my frustrations have little to do with enemies doing more damage and being spongier. My most major issue with the game is that combat sucks. It is not intuitive where you have to aim to be able to do a hit head shot or hit enemies low to the ground. There were many times when I was fighting the zombie dogs, in particular, when I had to die multiple times through tedious trial and error to figure out when and where I could shoot them. And then even when I did, this only staggered them briefly with the handgun so that they could get a free hit in.
The zombie dogs particularly suffer from being far too fast in a game where Jill moves like she is just learning to run for the first time. You could say that I should just dodge the zombie dogs but there is one part where you HAVE to kill one of them to receive a key necessary to continue in the game. On my second try at the game after having to restart, I quit after being killed by the two dogs over and over again. I only had one shotgun round so I had to muddle through with the handgun which has the problem I just mentioned.
My second major issue is the save ribbon system. In theory, I like how you have to parse them out so you can't save scum. In practice, especially on expert, it is impossible to know how many more tasks need to be completed to get the next set of save ribbons so I would end up using them too frequently when I thought it made sense. By the time I had gotten to the part where Jill has to head in to the woods, I had none left. I could go back to previous saves but re-doing a lot of what I had already done wasn't rewarding since I would inevitably end up finding the most optimum way to do something and then just doing that over and over. If there was a better way of knowing how long you need to save them, it would still allow for strategy without leaving the player to essentially have to make wild guesses. When I got to the part with the boss fight in the cabin, I restarted the game because I had to backtrack so much every time I lost to her.
I was having fun re-playing part of the beginning with the knowledge I had gained in the first run, but there were too many frustrations for me to want to keep soldiering on. This is a "skill issue", but why is that relevant? A game can be "hard" without being intuitive or fun. It took me 250+ tries to beat Malenia in Elden Ring and the fight felt fair (except for one move) and rewarding. So for me it is not a matter of being willing to get better and retry over and over. In the case of REmake, re-doing runs never felt fun because they took a long time and I didn't feel like there was much I could do improve each attempt. The game heavily emphasizes memorizing the (far too huge) map and the janky combat mechanics more than it emphasizes being able to create personalized solutions to problems or try out various strategies. In some parts of the game, there are meaningful choices you can make, but there are frequently times when you HAVE to do something a certain way and if you are out of ammo and health then you are out of luck. In Resident Evil 2 Remake, for instance, there is only one aspect of that game on expert (the horrendously designed fight with the crane) that I got genuinely stuck on no matter how I played. I rarely had to go back to the save file before my current one, let alone a couple of save files previously.
I hate having to DNF this game, because I do genuinely like the treasure hunting and resource management aspect of the game. I just think that its overly tanky controls, incredibly slow menus and repetitive door opening animations, and often inflexible encounters wore me down over time. I got a good taste of the game, but I think, for now, I am finished with it. Maybe someday I can come back to it with a clear head.

THE quintessential survival horror game. Not only is it an incredible remake that preserves the enduring parts of the original but it also adds a layer of polish that makes it easier to revisit the 2002 director's cut. Highly recommend to any and all survival horror fans, especially fans of later Resident Evil games.

no live-service bullshittery, no microtransactions, no DLCs, no lengthy tutorials.
no TAA blurriness, no DLSS, no upscaling, no raytracing.
all you have to do is just sit down and play.

absolutely maddening...this game drove me crazy with all the puzzles; but by god did i end up loving it. the satisfaction i felt upon completing a puzzle was....euphoric. i'm not sure if i would ever play this again...or at least for awhile as its rather tedious and some of the puzzles made me rip my hair out in frustration and anger. however, i highly recommend the experience!

The Fanfic vincent was so good I had to play it. (do not look up resident evil vincent, or vincent origins)

Used to play this game a ton in high school. It's still one of my all-time favorites. The decision-making, the tension, the jump scares, even the schlocky B-movie cutscenes - this is still my favorite Resident Evil game after all these years.
For those struggling with the tank controls, try Type E movement. It's a little unconventional at first, but once I started using it years ago, I never went back.

Absolutely delightful horror classic.
The janky gameplay, terrible voice acting, creepy atmosphere, and well designed monsters lead to a game that’s a perfect blend of goofy and scary.
I don’t have much else to say about this game. If you haven’t played it, do so.

What can I say that hasn't already been said before. It is a survival horror classic for a reason.
