7.5/10 RE0 is definitely one of the RE games of all time. From the unique aspect of controlling two characters and having no item box I enjoyed how difficult this game was. I doubt I'll ever replay it unlike RE1 and 4 but it was an experience I don't regret having.

A cake of ideas that do not blend well together. Yet, it is pretty, has some cool areas and I enjoyed my time roaming around.

Right where do i start...? I've only ever played RE2 remaster, RE3 remaster, RE4 Remaster, RE7 and RE8. I've recently decieded to play them, all in order from the very beginning to the very end so that I'm ready for RE9. this includes code veronica and chronicles. Normally I hate playing older games due to the dated graphics and audio. but with this game I think that the audio holds up very well, the soundtrack and the sounds of killing zombies are great. I took my time with this game and also plan to get all the achievement. I would say, if you haven't played one of the older RE games that isn't RE2 or RE3 then I would 100% recommend RE0. i will warn you however, the game doesn't help that much with puzzles and map navigation so the game is well and truely not for novice gamers. the camera angles can be jank and the same can be said about the controls. the story is a solid 7/10. Is it the best RE game? no but I'd rank it quite high on my list.

This is a good Resident Evil game but not a great one. It tries to follow in RE1's footsteps but ends up being a more tedious, annoying version. In the first game items feel very thoughtfully placed throughout the map whereas in this one it felt a lot more random and disjointed. A lot of the tension and suspense from the first game is also gone but RE0 tries to get some scares by placing cheap, gimmicky scares throughout the game. This combined with some of the worst enemy design I could think of for a game like this. There were times where enemies were clearly just placed to drain resources (I understand it's commonplace BUT it feels like this game tries to artificially insert tense moments between long saves that came naturally in RE1). I still like this game though, it's not all bad. The story felt like a big step up from the first with more fleshed out characters and a narrative that fits cleanly into the story-line, filling in some plot points where needed. Main characters were great too. Overall, a good game but unnecessarily aggravating and tedious when it didn't ever need to be.

I already finished this a few times on another console, but i LOVE this game. The setting is so gorgeous and the vibes are definitely eerie. This game definitely has its flaws and the camera angles paired with the attacking isnt for everyone, but billy and Rebecca are some of my favorite characters even today
Greetings, friends! Today we're diving into the archives of old-school Capcom to talk about a prototype that eventually became one of the most atmospheric horror titles in the series: Resident Evil Zero.
While many people first experienced the game on the GameCube, its story actually dates back to the 1990s. The project was originally planned as an exclusive for the Nintendo 64, and not on regular cartridges either, but for a planned peripheral that used compact discs. However, it quickly became clear that 64 megabytes of storage simply wasn't enough to realise the developers' ambitions. Hardware limitations were suffocating the project. Capcom ran into several issues. Nintendo cartridges were not only limited in capacity, but also extremely expensive to produce. The more ROM space or advanced chipsets a cartridge had, the more expensive it became. At the same time, competitors like Sony and Sega were releasing games on CDs, which were far cheaper to manufacture. This was one of the reasons why N64 games could cost 75 dollars or more, and releasing Resident Evil Zero on multiple cartridges would have killed any chance of commercial success. Until 1999, Capcom didn't even officially confirm that Resident Evil Zero existed. It was only thanks to producer Yoshiki Okamoto that fans learned the game was still in development, and initially still intended for the N64. However, market conditions made it clear that a shift was needed. All previous Resident Evil titles had come out on PlayStation 1, and moving the game to the GameCube turned out to be the right call. It allowed Capcom to ditch expensive cartridges, improve the design, and optimise loading times. Resident Evil Zero is a prequel to the original Resident Evil from 1996. The story follows the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team and their trials in the Arklay Mountains. As with classic entries in the series, this is survival horror with an emphasis on resource management and puzzles. Combat takes a back seat here. The focus is on thinking ahead, planning, and making every bullet and healing item count. One of the game's key features is its two-character system. You control Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen, switching between them as needed. This adds depth to the gameplay: you can use one character to carry extra items and free up space. Items can now be dropped on the ground too, replacing the old magic storage boxes. It's convenient, but be prepared for some serious backtracking if you forget something important in another wing of the facility. The save system has also become harsher. To save your progress, you need an ink ribbon. There are no autosaves. This adds tension and forces you to think carefully before moving forward. Each character has unique abilities. Rebecca can mix herbs and chemicals but is physically weaker. Billy, on the other hand, can move heavy objects, use a lighter, and take more damage, but he can't mix healing items. The original script was partially rewritten to fit the new platform, but the overall atmosphere remained. Everything we love about classic Resident Evil is here: the dark interiors, limited resources, tense music, and that signature fear of what's waiting around the next corner.

easily has the worst gameplay in the series, if you are not a superfan do not touch this game it is actually terrible. constant backtracking, super difficult puzzles, minimal resources throughout the entire game. getting rid of the item box crippled this game. i have beaten it once and i will jnever play it again.

Playtime: 10–15 hours | Completion: Main story + Leech Hunter Recommended (for fans) Resident Evil 0 is a prequel that offers a deeper look into the origins of the series. It keeps the classic fixed-camera survival horror formula, but introduces the partner zapping mechanic — letting you switch between Rebecca and Billy on the fly. It’s atmospheric, challenging, and occasionally frustrating, but worth it for RE fans. Pros: Beautiful HD remaster with classic pre-rendered backgrounds Atmospheric environments and eerie soundtrack Partner system adds puzzle variety and strategic depth Ties in well with the events leading into RE1 Leech Hunter mode offers fun extra content Cons: Inventory management is a pain — no item boxes AI partner can be a liability in combat Story and characters are weaker than other RE titles Backtracking and item juggling can be tedious Final Thoughts: Resident Evil 0 is a love letter to classic survival horror with all its strengths — and quirks. It’s not the most accessible entry point, but for longtime fans, it’s a challenging and atmospheric addition to the lore. 7.5/10 "Back to where the nightmare began — and where the inventory headaches started."

It pains me to downvote a RE game, but... Resident Evil 0 is unbearable. Although the two-character mechanic is very interesting and makes for some good moments, it also makes inventory management a pain, especially since both characters have very limited inventory space. But the worst part of RE0 is the difficulty. I've played hard games, but RE0 is INSANE. Compared with other RE games, there are too many enemies in this game. Some enemies are almost indestructible but you won't know that until you spend all your best ammo on said enemies. But despite being very liberal with the enemy count, Resident Evil 0 is super stingy with resources. Add to that the primitive save system that can lose you multiple hours of progress with each death and you got yourself the hardest RE game you've ever played. I tried to beat it a couple of times and just couldn't.

story depth is pretty narrow which can be a drawback, but it is understandable considering it is a prequel to resident evil and is trying to set the stage for the main series. the tank controls feel very awkward and clunky to use the first hour or two, but they are easy to handle once you get used to them. overall, this game was very enjoyable to play and if you're a huge resident evil fan or looking for an entry point into the franchise, this is definitely worth checking out :)

Graphics: AVERAGE -For the 2016 era, graphics are valid and average in my opinion. Price: WAIT FOR SALE. -I would say this game is worth the $20 price point, but goes on sale often, so wait for that. Requirements: MINIMUM -2016 game, shouldn't require too much. Difficulty: MEDIUM - HARD -Forgot how hard some puzzles were in this era. Also the difficulty with item space is another thing. Game length: Short. (3 - 8 hours) -Game did not take long to complete. Story: Average. -For what this game is SUPPOSED to be, the story seems a little off still. Music/Sound: DECENT. -I am just a huge fan of RE music and scores. Gameplay: MEH -After playing all the remakes, going back to this controller scheme was NOT fun. Bugs: None Found. Final: AVERAGE -I decided to replay the entire Resident Evil series in anticipation of the upcoming Resident Evil 9, and this installment felt more like a minor hurdle than a highlight. While the game isn’t bad by any means, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of others in the series. If you're patient with the puzzle-heavy gameplay and can adapt to the dated control scheme, there's still an enjoyable experience to be had. However, the narrative felt somewhat rushed, lacking the depth and pacing seen in stronger entries. Final Rating: 6.5/10

If you're an RE fan, it's worth a play through, but it's far from the best in the series. If you're not a sure fan, or looking at an entry point to the series, there are much better games to play (RE2, RE4, etc.) Otherwise, here's my review. It's a 20+ year old game, originally from the game cube. The dialogue is bad. The controls are serviceable, but by today's standards they're poor in comparison. The entire game seems focused around the team gimmick; that is, you control two characters and have to use them in tandem to solve puzzles. Puzzles that in real life could be solved by one person, but the limitations of the game mean you have to use two. Tons of tedious item management in this game. I know that's somewhat of a hallmark for the series, but this title goes a bit overboard. Combat is fine, though there are definitely sections where you want to run past enemies rather than fighting them. Enemy variety is rather boring. Standard zombies, dogs, crows. But then we have giant bugs of various kinds, Hunters (from the previous games), and...monkeys. Overall, the enemies are lacking the more horrific elements of the other games in the series. Only the leech men are interesting, and they're so tough that you generally want to avoid them rather than fight. Anyways, if I could give this a neutral rating I would, but Steam makes me choose yes or no. So I give it a cautious yes, but only if you're an existing fan of the series. If not, there are better options.

This is such a weird game for me. I wish I could put mixed. I love Resident Evil and I have beat every mainline game and most of the spin-offs. I often achievement hunt them and play them multiple times. I beat this game back in the day on Gamecube. I revisited it while playing the RE series through from start to finish. I ironically wrapped up my replays with this one. It is okay. It is not an underrated gem. It is not a hidden classic. For context I beat it on Hard mode this playthrough (my first one on PC). I think the inventory concept is one of the worst ideas they ever tried hands down. The partner system is kind of a mixed bag. As I was finishing the game my partner AI just...stood there aimed it's gun and never fired while a frog insta killed me. That was a hiccup but a bad one. Usually the partner system worked fine and honestly I didn't mind it. I think revelations 2 did it better, but Zero's wasn't terrible. The story is by all means easily one you can skip I really like Rebecca, I wish Billy got more development there's a part where they can develop him more and even delve into so PTSD concepts and they just...don't, scene ends game resumes never talked about. Knowing Capcom's record and the state of side characters Billy will never make a return which is a shame. The main baddie is stupid. Just stupid. The game has the hurdle of being a prequel to 1 so watching Rebecca take on horrible monsters only to be scared and shambling into a corner when a hunter shows up in RE1 makes no sense and the only "canon" the fanbase can come up with is "well she was tired from everything in 0!" I mean...I guess still lame. If you really like Resident Evil and want to explore every bit of story and content I say give it a go. If you are looking to get into RE skip this one. Don't let the title or the fact that it is a prequel fool you into getting it.

Meh, The game is decent, although definitely worse than RE1R. The gameplay requires quite a bit of time to get used to because of the missing item box and the more combat-focused gameplay. Exploration is still decent but definitely worse than RE1R because of the lack of visibility of what rooms are completed. Most puzzles are quite boring and sluggish. There are two real points that differentiate this game from its predecessor. Two characters and the new storage system. The new storage system could have been a great addition to this game, being able to drop items wherever you want is great. Unfortunately, they decided to remove the storage boxes. Making half the gameplay just managing these items by continuously picking them up and dropping them. Most players will still want their items to be together, so you will just have a few rooms used as item boxes, which defeats the whole point. It also makes going to a new area a pain since you need to move all your stuff to it. The second new thing is the two new characters you play at the same time. This was an enjoyable change of pace. Being able to instantly transition between them was pretty cool. There were also a few decent puzzles that used the two characters. The environments are visually quite nice and aged well. The map design did not, there is a lot of backtracking, and I mean a lot. The game also loves to spawn enemies back in rooms that were completed, so if you decide to drop items in certain finished rooms (which I thought was the whole point), the game will punish you for it. Additionally, there are numerous instances in which the game abruptly splits the two characters, which can lead to "softlock" situations where you are forced to either reload a save or force through a section you are not ready to handle. This almost also means you have to backtrack. Some people like this way of making the game more difficult, I do not. Bosses and enemy designs are mediocre, as expected since this is a prequel. The story is laughably bad, which does make it enjoyable in some way. In conclusion, the game is still passable, but it is brought down by the numerous bad gameplay design decisions and laughable writing that could definitely benefit from a complete rewrite and overhaul. Would only recommend for people that love Resident Evil and want more. And don't mind janky, frustrating gameplay and a lot of backtracking and door animations.

Amazing visual style and lovely characters. Story is fine, more of a companion piece to REmake. Gameplay is incredibly dated and has many quirks that drag it down. Inventory system is incredibly frustrating, and when ammo is so limited, it hurts when your shots just don't hit due to the weird camera angles. Limited saves is also a pain but this is more subjective. Overall, very good experience

I love and hate it. I love the environments and majority of the gameplay sections. I love the goofy dialogue and cheesy plot. I love the music. But to no surprise it has the worst inventory system in any survival horror game I've ever played. It makes the game overly tedious and really kills the pace having to backtrack through 20+ door cutscenes to grab an item I need to progress that I left behind hours ago. I highly recommend getting the item box mod, it's a great compromise because it disables the ability to drop items, but makes the game less tedious and makes it more in line with RE1 Remake. It's making subsequent playthroughs way more enjoyable.

As much as I love the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil Zero ended up being one of the most miserable gaming experiences I’ve had. I’ll admit, the beginning showed promise. The character-switching mechanic was responsive and brought something fresh to the series, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. I played on medium difficulty, and personally, I found the experience frustrating. Exploration felt more like a chore than engaging gameplay—mostly backtracking to find a key to unlock another area. The puzzles were tedious, often dragging on far too long (spending hours locating three obscure items isn't my idea of fun). The combat didn’t help either. I know the series uses fixed cameras, but the gunplay felt clunky. Enemies soaked up bullets, turning every encounter into a resource-draining hassle. Healing items were sparse, and staying alive felt more about luck than skill—especially when paired with the overly powerful enemies. Managing your inventory also came with many challenges. With no item box, I was constantly dropping and shuffling gear just to progress. Instead of adding tension, it became a repetitive and irritating burden. As for the story, it's the usual corny RE fare—nothing particularly new or compelling there. And lastly… those door animations. Have fun with them. In the end, what started as a promising experience became a slog. I wanted to like RE0, but it just wasn’t for me.

Unforgiving but insanely enjoyable. Probably in the minority when I say I like the no item box system and your inventory is all you can keep. However the hook gun was handled so poorly. The game punishes you for not lugging around an item that takes up two inventory spots. Should've been a personal item like Billys lighter. Way harder than RE1 and I loved the challenge

camera angle switch can be extremely unfortunate and annoying, i liked the control (Keyboard), all in all the game is good for its ages, the drop system is a really nice, the enemies are slow, sluggish and easily avoidable but not always, boss fight are pretty easy, pretty linear (first game of RE played and 100%ed but not the last)

People complain about this game, but for like, a fixed camera, kind of 2D, isometric game, it's pretty good. I liked it. The story is kind of corny and silly, but it genuinely adds to the Resident evil universe. Plus, it's the only RE game with Rebecca Chambers, who is possibly the best RE characters. By the by, I strongly recommend playing this game with the mod that adds item boxes to typewriters, as the game is practically unplayable without it. Overall, lots of fun. I would LOVE to see a 3rd Person remake of Zero (and also, 1, of course). LOVE! We would get to see Rebecca again, and, also, they'd probably add lots of juicy story. Yes, please! Pls pls pls:)

To start, this game is much higher on the difficulty scale than a lot of RE games. The hallways and corridors are small enough to prohibit simply running past enemies. The lack of item boxes isn't really as big a pain in the rear as some have said. There are some ways in which the drop feature is actually quite convenient. You can drop an item, pick up say, a green and red flower, combine them, and the pick up the dropped item again. Aside from the difficulty level, the story is actually pretty interesting and lets the player know in more depth what led to the events of the mansion incident. The puzzle were moderately interesting and often necessitated switching back and forth between characters to complete. All in all, this is a pretty good RE game, but it is definitely not for beginners. I would definitely recommend to players who have played a few RE titles already.

A nice look to the origin story, but it's a bit outdated. It's weird to play two character at once (or coop?). The item system without the box is really clunky. Lots of backtracking if you want or need an item. Everything just lies on the floor. It's pure chaos. This's more horror than zombies and monsters. But yes if you want to see a bit more behind the curtain, it's an okey game to play.

Great start to the Resident Evil franchise, as well as being the first Resident Evil game I've played. I love Billy and Rebecca being the main characters, they're my favorite characters in Resident Evil so far! It was engaging to switch between characters and solving puzzles together. The graphics in the game is still good for being originally remastered in 2002, and I love how suitable the aesthetic is for a retro horror game. I've heard and read complaints about the inventory management in this game, and yeah it can be irritating, but personally I managed just fine. I think the only thing that bugged me a bit was the tank controls and fixed camera angles, since I have never played this style of gaming before. However, on the brighter side it's necessary for me to try something new. Mind you, this game is older than me, so this was probably a standard control scheme during that time. Anyways, I am definitely planning to play this game again, in addition to earning the achievements as well. I think this game would be more entertaining if it was cooperative/multiplayer, just like Resident Evil 5.

it probably has a good story or something and the graphics are pretty alright for how old this game is but man it it just really fucking frustrating. The inventory system is ass and really annoying meaning that youll have to backtrack to get items that you didnt have the space for a bunch and saving in this game is bullshit. the save points are few and far between and there are no autosaves meaning that if you die you can potentially lose hours of progress. Not only that but you need ink ribbons to save which is another pointless item that just takes your inventory space. the actual gameplay isnt really even fun either, the enemies feel boring to fight. I'm conflicted when it comes to this game. I’m not sure if I like it or not. It doesn’t really expand the lore, offer particularly interesting gameplay, or have any truly memorable moments—it just kind of exists. A lot of people disliked the lack of an item box, but honestly, it didn’t bother me in the slightest. With the two playable characters, you basically get enough inventory space to carry everything you need. One handles all the guns, the other carries the key items, and using that strategy, I was able to beat the game without much trouble. It was also pretty short, which probably made that approach even more manageable. All in all, it’s not exactly a noteworthy entry in the series—but I’ll admit, Rebecca is kinda lowkey smashable, and it’s a shame she doesn’t return in any other mainline game after Zero.

Resident Evil 0 is not a particularly good Resident Evil game. Compared to its other numbered peers in the PSOne/Gamecube era, it seems to struggle with what kind of story it wants to tell. It is neither as steeped in survival horror as its peers; nor has it quite hit upon the 'action horror' vibes that Capcom would later fully develop in Devil May Cry and eventually Resident Evil 4; which is still held up as a great example of a game hitting all the right action and horror notes very well. Resident Evil 0's rooms tend to be cramped and action-heavy. There are many more enemies to had -- various event flags will trigger previously cleared rooms to populate with more enemies fairly steadily. The fixed camera angles usually discourage attempts to juke enemies or avoid combat. But there are also a lot more weapons and ammunition to be found for applying combat. The two-character system isn't a lot of fun to actually play with. Most of the puzzles which require you to make use of both of them working together involve splitting them up to move to different rooms, effectively doubling the amount of backtracking you have to do from room to room in order to proceed. This backtracking issue is further exacerbated by the new inventory system, wherein the 'magic box' of the previous titles is done away with and replaced with a more 'realistic' system of having to leave items on the floor of the room you've left them in, and then having to go back to retrieve it when needed. Most often, this results in a careful player simply designating a room as a 'drop' room and leaving all of your things in there. Essentially deconstructing the 'magic box' into something much more annoying and tedious. And you need to manage inventory a lot in this game because even spread among the two playable characters inventory space is at a premium with some items taking up two slots. The enemy and boss design is lackluster and uninspired. The story is oddly toned; the Queen Leech looking more like a character that stepped out of a jRPG than a survival horror game. Why the upvote, then? Because even through all the criticism, I can see that the design and development was trying to innovate and do different things with the formula. I think Capcom was trying not to fall into the Mega Man formula of simply releasing the same game every few years with a new coat of paint. Two playable characters going through the scenario together was new and different. The inventory management was new and different. Ramping down the survival horror a couple notches and raising the action and combat up a couple notches was something new and different. And it is through innovating and experimenting with formulas that greater ideas are formed. A flawed game, but no less a labor of love. I can see the cracks but also the creative intensity. A game like Resident Evil 0 has to crawl so that Resident Evil 4 can run. I probably won't ever replay it. But I did enjoy having seen it through.
